It’s a COYOTE! The city of Chicago and local areas, including Wolf Lake and Eggers Grove, have seen an increase in coyote sightings. They look like pet dogs but, are in fact, wild animals and should not be approached. Coyotes are always on the lookout for food and commonly feed on mice, rabbits and birds. They have also been known to prey on small dogs and are commonly attracted to bird feeders and pet food that is left outside. Should one come in contact, do not run. Yell, stand up straight and wave around. Look larger and louder than appearing to be. For more information, contact 10th Ward Alderman John A. “Taylor School Goes Healthy!”

4th District Senior Citizens meet to help protect By Christa Torres Ctorres@ontnews.com

By Angela Romero & Edwin Salas (Two Taylor School Students) Crunch! Crunch! Carrots are delicious! Taylor School’s brand new salad bar has just opened on Thursday, January 24th. It is a great way for the students of Taylor School to be healthy and fit; they also have more food choices. Kids all over the school took action trying the salad bar, they absolutely loved it! Even teachers went into the cafeteria to pick up some salad. We went around the cafeteria asking students what they thought about the salad bar. One of the students, Diego Robles from third grade answered, “I don’t like it, I LOVE IT! I love the lettuce and broccoli.” Isn’t it amazing?! When have you heard kids saying

that they love broccoli and other vegetables? Little kids are actually learning that eating healthy is important. Another student, Beatriz Lopez, from eighth grade answered “I think it’s good for us because it helps us to be healthy everyday”. Beatriz is a great example and role model to little kids that look up to her. Another eighth grader, Priscilla Del Real, answered “I think that more people are starting to eat healthy because of the salad bar, and I really like it.” This salad bar can set up a lifelong habit of healthy eating for the students in Taylor School. This is our goal for the salad bar, instead of kids grabbing bags of potato chips, chocolate, and other junk food they can reach for fruits and vegetables. We really think this can happen, because of the results that we had on the first day of our salad bar were outstanding!!!

The 4th District Senior Citizen Advisory Council often gather together to inform the community on how to keep the neighborhood safe. One of their last meetings included a guest speaker from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation of Greater Chicago. Commissioner, Debra Shore, spoke about properly disposing of unwanted or unused pharmaceuticals. Proper disposal of these items will keep them out of neighboring rivers and streams that many animals use for their livelihood as well as drinking water for household use. Should any unwanted or unused medications and over the counter medicines need to be disposed of, the 10th Ward’s closest location would be the Area 2 Police Department at 727 E 111th Street. To attend the next 4th District Senior Citizen Advisory Council, who meet at the 4th District CAPS Office on 2255 E 103rd Street, call the office at 312.747.1708.

Gabriel Martinez Jr., a senior at George Washington High School, received a full scholarship to play soccer at UIC for the 2013 season and recently signed his letter of intent on February 6th. He also played club soccer for the Raiders out of Lemont, IL who are nationally ranked number one. Martinez is an all conference and all city player who has been playing since he was 6 years old. All of his younger siblings play soccer as well which he contributes to his father Gabriel Martinez Sr., his grandfather and uncles. This year GWHS was 9th through out the state of Illinois in which they were 19-2 where they won regionals and sectionals but lost in the super sectionals to Peoria Notre

Dame who were the eventual states champs. This year they were led by Raphael Alarcon, Aaron Ortega, Juliano Rodriguez. They have won state regional’s three years in a row. Next year will be just as strong with six returning starters and next years team leaders will be Brian Romo, Alex Llamas and Jimmy Canedo. They GWHS boys varsity swim team, with more than half being first time swimmers, placed 14th out of 30 in the city finals; their JV team placed 17th in city. It has been an amazing journey for the boys swim team and coaching staff. The boys were amazing within the last three months as most never competed competitively or even swam. Senior Captain, Victor Torres, has led his team this year to 7-3 as opposed to last year where they went 6-2. The coaching staff had their work cut out for them this year but did an awesome job led by Head Coach Andronik
