Southeast Side Urges Approval of Chicago Clean Energy Project

By Christa Torres

Ctorres@onwnews.com More than 150 community members of the Southeast Side gathered at the James R. Thompson Center, at 100 W. Randolph St. in downtown Chicago, on July 9th, to show their support of the Chicago Clean Energy project, which is estimated to be a $3 billion private investment into the city. The supporters gathered to urge Governor Pat Quinn to sign the legislation for the Chicago Clean Energy Project into law. Members of the crowd voiced their opinions as to their frustration by what they

claim to be misinformation and rumors being circulated against the project. One supporter who asked to remain anonymous said, “Opponents of the project have been trying to scare consumers into thinking they will pay impossibly high and imaginary prices for natural gas from the Chicago Clean Energy facility.” He ended by saying, “The information, simply put, is completely false. We are here to tell our side of the story.” Representatives of the project stated,

Months of tireless preparation and hard work showed at ONT’s 2nd Annual Southeast Side Summer Fest held in the Pete’s Fresh Market parking lot, located at 3448 E. 118th Street. Despite the brutal heat wave and threat of rain, thousands of local and surrounding residents came out

to show their support and enjoyed three days of live entertainment, delicious, freshly made food, fun and cold drinks. Although the fest was held in the same location as last year, Our Neighborhood Times continued on its promise of bringing a first class experience to our community SUMMERFEST Continued on page 2

by not only expanding the event space, but also expanding the entertainment line up for 2012. Over 25 acts graced the event stage this year and thanks to Joe Rega Tours, the quality of the sound and professional lighting display made for a top-notch entertainment experience for the second year in a row. “It was well organized and it is evident that it was a great success,” said local resident, Chela Ruiz. “The location and the entertainment was great, the fancy tents gave it a nice look. We can show Chicago, that we here on the Southeast side, are a FIRST CLASS COMMUNITY!” “This is the Super Bowl of local musical events in our community,” said Sam Gomez, General Manager of ONT. “We are proud to have given this opportunity to so many local children, residents and band members and we’re very excited to work with so many different people to bring the best possible entertainment experience to everyone involved.” ONT could not have done it without the support of many local organizations, community leaders and elected officials, especially 10th Ward Alderman John A. Pope. Also present at the event were the South Chicago and East Side Chambers of Commerce as well as many local talented artists and businesses from the community. A prominent children’s area was, again, a part of this year’s fest with face painting, jump houses and games provided by the East Side Chamber of Commerce. The South Chicago Chamber of Commerce graciously provided use of their famous trolley car to ensure those that required transportation to the fest were not left out of the festivities. Special thank you to Raya Lopez, Yoland DeAnda and Sherri the friendly and gracious trolley driver as well as Rich Melendrez of the South Chicago Neighborhood House and Patty Wojcikowski of the Hegewisch Community Committee for managing the bingo room. “It’s very important that we have the support of the community and our residents, or else we would not be able to give them what we work so hard for,” said Christa Torres, Editor of ONT. “I’m happy with the outcome of our event and everyone who came out to see what we had to offer this year. I know that we’ll have a lot to bring to the table when we’re organizing next year’s event. I can’t wait!”

We, of course, could not have had a fest without our entertainment stage and everyone that performed over the threeday event. Opening night, Friday June 29th, featured performances by the band SpinGold, followed by Early April and Lost Generation. Each band attracted a great crowd and kept them going with a mix of original and cover songs. Saturday morning was kicked off by a special workout session brought to you by Joe Cisneros of JMC Fit Factory and Beach Body. Despite the heat, many people were able to get a great workout and tips for a healthy lifestyle. Saturday afternoon’s Talent Showcase featured grammar and high school aged students in a variety of acts that ranged from a cappella singing, a band and a dance group performance. Shortly after the talent showcase, a local all-girl group, X.O.X. made their debut performance. Local bands, Dirty Switch and Static Sound, who were both contestants in the 2011 Battle of the Bands, rocked the stage prior to the 2012 Battle of the Bands Finals. The bands that made it to the finals were: The Black Roses, Teach the Fire, Expired Empire and CoJack, who regularly performs as a solo artist, but brought a three piece band to support him in his performance for the big show. Once again, a panel of three judges chose the winner of the competition that included, Sam Gutierrez, (former singer/ song writer for Xnerio), Frank Bermejo, lead singer of the band Common Poverty and Jeff Lovett, who owns a recording studio based in Chicago. Each judge scored the competitors on four specific criteria: stage presence, crowd reaction, originality and musicianship. In the end, Corey “CoJack” Cahill was named the Second Annual Battle of the Bands Champion. Last year’s battle winners, the Free AJents, closed out the Battle of the Band Finals by putting on a performance that reaffirmed why they were the champions of the 2011 competition. The last hour was focused on giving exposure to a handful of local artists that included Bentley, Matthew “Jus’J” Bright, Samantha “Miss Is” Rivera and Jose “Mike Feen” Munoz. Finally, Juanie & The Bassdroppers, along with DJ Krizzle, Exxpression and Jon Doce got the crowd going as they performed a mix of Freestyle, House, Bachata and Reggeaton.

Chicago Clean Energy project

By Brian Grabinski

– at a predictable rate. And if the market price fluctuates, it is required to protect rate payers from those price swings. No one can predict future natural gas prices. However, Chicago Clean Energy is required to offer a certain, predictable gas price over the entire life of the project. Its pricing structure will save consumers money during periods of higher market prices and Chicago Clean Energy’s required consumer protections should keep ratepayers at market when prices are low. These are guarantees that no gas utility has ever offered. What’s more important – the project will make a major investment in a neighborhood that desperately needs it. The project land will be cleaned up at no cost to taxpayers and thousands of jobs will be available in our own backyard. We will learn new skills that will put the work force – and the entire state – on the cutting edge of clean energy technology. We know what this project could mean for our community and we shouldn’t let misinformation stand in the way.

Bgrabinski@onwnews.com The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) PG-13 136 min - Action | Adventure | Fantasy - 3 July 2012 (USA) SYNOPSIS: Peter Parker finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young. His path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner. REVIEW: The storyline of the new The Amazing Spider-Man is completely different yet essentially the same. The principal characters’ names may have changed but their actions are almost identical to those of the originals. This film had a lot of ground to cover, resulting in a movie that feels rushed in

certain places and heavy in the middle. I enjoyed Parker’s discovery of his new powers and the fact that they made his costume/utilities more practical than the Raimi version. Here Parker is protected from sight while in costume but not from serious injury. The webs he tosses come from a clever device and the tall buildings he swings between are sometimes just out of reach. That gives his crime stopping a bit of a realistic edge by showing us that he can just as easily hurt himself as a criminal. My problem is that what could have been an elevated superhero movie starts to be boiled down to a formulaic action flick with lots of brawn but no brain. It will deliver for those looking for action sequences of stature but won’t fill your appetite for believable scenes to tie it all together. On a scale of 1-10, I give this one a 9.5. As Gov. Pat Quinn considers signing SB 3766, the community should have the correct facts about the Chicago Clean Energy project. The propose gasification plant on the southeast side will bring $3 billion in new, private investment to Chicago and create thousands of jobs during construction, and over 600 jobs each and every year during its 60-year useful life. Plus, the project is mandated to save natural gas ratepayers at least $100 million over the term of the contract. Our city and our economy deserve a better discussion than the one offered by the opposition. With so many positive aspects about the Chicago Clean Energy project, we are unsure why people focus only on misleading claims. The Chicago Clean Energy project does not burn coal. Instead it will use a proven chemical process that negates 99.9% of emissions and diversifies our energy sources – all while meeting the new proposed EPA greenhouse gas emissions standards. The Chicago Clean Energy project will produce natural gas – a clean-burning fuel

Shining Star’s new addition to the East Side

Ctorres@onwnews.com Shining Star Child Development Institute of the Arts began as a dream with nothing but hope and a vision for Gicele Wray, owner of Shining Star. Gicele T. WrayNow, eight Lindley, MSHSA Executive Director years into her business, she has opened her fourth location at 10540 S. Ewing Ave. here on the East Side. Prior to her dream, Wray was a student at the University of Illinois working as a social worker for the Department of Children and Family Services. “I went to bed one day and had a dream about it, just like that. With no money I stepped out on faith and no one to help me. But, when your dream is burden inside of you, you can’t die with that

dream inside of you,” said Wray. “So, I started to pursue my dream and I got out there with no money and all of a sudden the universe just started bringing people to help me, to put me in business and 8 years down the line I’m here with 4 sites.” Shining Star currently has four locations; 3010 E. 92nd Street, 854 E. 79th Street, 338 E. 103rd Street and newly opened 10540 S. Ewing Ave. Each location prides itself on providing high quality early learning experiences and early learning childcare to at risk communities. Beginning with children as young as six weeks old through six years old, Shining Star believes that development begins in the womb. “Kids, even in the womb, have the ability to start grasping new concepts and when they [are born] they [are] grasping concepts,” says Wray. Offering an atmosphere that encourages social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth and development for children, their curriculum includes arts & crafts, computer technology, culinary arts, creative movement, indoor/ outdoor play, language development, bi-lingual education, manners etiquette, mathematical concepts, music arts,

performing arts-comptech, personal hygiene, positive self identity, reading readiness, science/social studies, story time, weekly fitness programs and field trips. In 2009, Shining Star transitioned from being a childcare center to children and family services. Each month they organize a family outing and strive to keep a strong family involvement. They also have a partnership with the Learn Charter School for those students who graduate out of their program and making it easier for the kids to transition. Shining Star’s mission is to promote, provide and encourage quality early learning experiences to children of all nations. Their curriculum, lesson plans, learning activities and arts programs are designed to draw children closer to excellence, develop them into society’s service and encourage them to experience the freedom that comes through educational empowerment. “The fact is that the project is guaranteed by law to save consumers at least $100 million on their natural gas bills over 30 years.” The law being proposed includes a number of built in consumer protections. It includes a 2 percent rate cap, a $1.5 billion reserve account that would lessen rate changes and a performancebased system to share savings and extra revenues with the consumer. “It’s troubling that opponents of this project don’t even try to understand the law, the economics or the math,” said

“On behalf of hundreds of my constituents, we urge Governor Quinn to sign SB 3766 advancing the Chicago Clean Energy project,” said Representative Marcus C. Evans, Jr. (D -33). “This project has broad-based, statewide, bi-partisan support because it’s a solid and innovative project that brings a proven technology to our state while protecting consumers and creating needed jobs.” “This project is a win-win-win for our city, our state and consumers,” said State Sen. Donne Trotter (D- Chicago). “Projects and investments like these don’t come along every day. We urge Governor Quinn to not let this opportunity pass us by.” By some account the project is slated to generate more than $10 billion in economic output for Illinois, including an estimated $1.25 billion in added state and local tax revenue. It is estimated to create more than 2,000 temporary and permanent jobs and will remediate an otherwise unusable contaminated brownfield site – while ushering in a new chapter in clean energy technology for Illinois. “No one can say what natural gas prices will be in 5-and-a-half years when

the project is operational - without this project our state is wholly unprepared for the next gas price spike,” said Ted Stalnos, president of the Calumet Area Industrial Commission. “But we do know the Chicago Clean Energy project will provide a stable price and more importantly will open new doors for workers and businesses across our state. We urge Governor Quinn to make that happen.” “We know what’s good for our community and it’s the Chicago Clean Energy project,” said Reverend Walter C. Turner, Pastor of New Spiritual Light Church. “We need this project to help revitalize our community and we ask that Governor Quinn move this project forward immediately.” The gasification facility is to be located at 115th St and Burley Ave, and will produce substitute natural gas through the cleanest method of currently available for utilizing Illinois coal anywhere in the world. For more information on the project visit www.chicagocleanenergy. com.

10th Ward Alderman John A. Pope. “Presuming natural gas prices will remain the same for the next 30 years is bad thinking and bad policy. The residents of Illinois deserve better. They also deserve a shot at a clean energy future and an innovative project like this one.” “Enough is enough with the lies and scare tactics from special interest groups that know nothing about our community,” said Dan McMahon, business manager, Carpenters Local 272 and lifetime resident of the Southeast side. “We know the Chicago Clean Energy project is good for our community because we are the ones who live and work here. We urge Governor Quinn to listen to our voices and not those spreading false information.” Supporters believe gasification is a critical part of the necessary transition from traditional coal-fired power to a cleaner energy future. Thus far, six separate pieces of legislation were required to enable the statutory framework for the Chicago Clean Energy project to date, each of which passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly by wide margins and with strong bi-partisan support.

Closing out the Saturday night line up was Napo Mendoza of “Blatin America” who definitely put on a show. Overall, the diverse line up of entertainers generated hundreds of fest goers that evening. Sunday morning started with a health walk, once again brought to you by Joe Cisneros. Early Sunday afternoon, Mariachis opened up the entertainment for the day. It was not long after their performance when a storm came halting the fest and entertainment for an hour. Thankfully the sky cleared up and the show was ready to go on. DJ’s Louie Vega and Louie “Bird” Aguilar played an oldies/doo wop set for the crowd fitting the overall theme of Sunday. Common Poverty, who took part in last year’s Battle of the Bands, performed to a growing crowd of people coming in after the rain. Next up were the Bed Bugs, whose performance was, as always, entertaining and even had some of the fests’ youngest attendees dancing to their familiar beats. Performances by legendary bands Latin Satin Soul and Together closed out the fest by putting on an outstanding show as

they did last year. Both bands performed to a packed house that filled the fest area with lawn chairs. Many could not help but get up and dance to music that filled the evening. As it was last year, Mix Masters DJ’s provided all of the music keeping everyone “In the Mix” and made for nonstop entertainment over the entire threeday event. We also cannot forget our Master of Ceremonies, Sam Gutierrez, who presented each and every last performer who went on stage. We would like to thank everyone for their support and all those that assisted in bringing this fest to life. We could not do this without you. See you all next year.

Sports By Juan Quintana and Marissa Flores jquintana@onwnews.com Friday, June 22nd was the beginning of a two-day Summer Football Camp with NFL New Orleans Saints Linebacker, Martez Wilson. Wilson, who is a former graduate of Simeon Career Academy and played for the University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign, hosted the 1st Annual Martez Wilson Football/ Cheerleading Camp at Calumet Park on the East Side. Along with Wilson were fellow NFL Players, Nate Bussey, Richard Sherman, Josh Brent and Mikel Leshore. Wilson felt that he needed to give back to the community seeing as he was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago and has family that lives in the community. Wilson spoke to about 300 kids who signed up from different south side elementary and high schools for the free program. He spoke about hard work and determination, he also made it a point to make sure they understood how he got to where he is by staying in school. The South Chicago YMCA along with Alderman John A. Pope fully supported Wilson and everyone involved, making

NFL comes to Calumet Park it possible to have two very productive days. Kids from the YMCA Summer Program were also there participating and having fun. Wilson and the other NFL players really connected with the kids and made them feel important. If they saw someone struggling, they would take them one on one and give them advice to help them out. Wilson’s parents were also on hand interacting with people, sharing stories and really becoming involved with the community. Members of the community also stopped by to take pictures of the NFL Superstars. At the end of day one, Wilson and the other NFL players coached and refereed a 7 on 7 flag football game with some of the youngsters. At the conclusion of the second day is when all the boys and girls received their certificates and medals presented to them by Wilson himself. Wilson is truly a down to earth person who cares about the future of these kids. With this camp, he has encouraged them to pursue their dreams and never give up no matter what their dreams are. If there was anything to take away from the camp, it would be some of Wilson’s last few words, “If no one else believes in you or supports you, remember that you will

“We played a great schedule this year and the team responded very well to the tougher opponents from the suburbs,” said Pancer. Washington defeated suburban powers such as Oak Lawn, Tinley Park and Montini Catholic of Lombard. Schools from around the state have noticed Washington’s success on the diamond which has attracted many colleges looking for some top talent to fill their teams. “Five years ago when I took over the program I had to call around for games with better schools to get our own kids better. Now times have changed. They are calling me to set up a game which I think it says

also two extra point field goals but on the final drive with no time left he missed a 35yard field goal ending the game in a tie 1414 between North and South.

This year’s team, which is graduating only two seniors, with catcher, John Perez and second baseman, Nick Huerta, have a very strong nucleolus coming back with team MVP P/SS, Jesse Lopez (JR), P Adrian Luna (JR), 3B Marco Arias (JR), SS/P Agustin Guerrero (So), outfielders Robert Garcia (So) and Anthony Solis (JR). “Losing John Perez is going to be tough. John was leader on our team and someone has to fill some big shoes,” said Coach Pancer. Perez, who was also Washington High School’s starting quarterback on a 7-2 team, will play college football in the fall. Perez was one of two players from Washington’s football to have been chosen to play for the All City All Stars on June 23 at Gately Stadium. Perez (Punter) and Jaime Prado (kicker), who graduated from GWHS, participated in the event. Prado had two kickoff touchbacks and
