By Marisa Munoz Mmunoz@onwnews.com Cloudy skies and lightening did not stop the semi-finals of the Battle of the Bands on Saturday, June 16th. Held at Papi Chulo’s Bar and Grill, the event kicked off with performances by local bands, Steel and Spingold. Expired Empire was the first on deck to perform in the battle. The band, who performed at their first battle minus their lead singer (due to illness) was complete this time around.
The Black Roses, who just came off of being on tour, were second to perform. Third to perform was Teach the Fire. The band took part in the last year’s battle, however have since changed some members of the band. CoJack, who performs as a solo artist, surprised his fans when he introduced a three piece band that performed alongside him. Once CoJack’s performance was complete all votes were tallied as the bands anticipated the announcement of who would make it to the finals. CoJack who collected the most votes of the night was the first to make it. The

One summer blockbuster that won’t put you to sleep... By Brian Grabinski
Bgrabinski@onwnews.com
Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) PG-13 127 min - Action | Adventure | Drama - 1 June 2012 (USA) Director: Rupert Sanders Writers: Evan Daugherty (screenplay), John Lee Hancock, (screenplay) and Hossein Amini (screenplay) Stars: Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron SYNOPSIS: In a twist to the fairy tale, the Huntsman ordered to take Snow White into the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen.
REVIEW:
Snow White and the Huntsman is the newest installment from Hollywood’s recent niche of adapting fairytales with a new twist. It’s
a filthy and bleak world filled with fantasy. It’s in the vein of the Lord of the Rings or the Game of Thrones, containing mystical elements - but a grounded realism remains throughout. The grand settings and creatures are accomplished through masterful CGI that manages to make trolls, dark magic and even dwarves look stunning. The pacing of the film is swift, quickly moving on to new settings and characters, never lingering too long. Along with the theatrical music and grand editing it’s a well crafted piece of work. My only issue with the film was that it contained way too many characters. By the end it feels as if there is too much to cover, with the Queen’s brother and Prince Charming both feeling left out. Even the Huntsmen is shunned by the final moments of the film, almost left in as an afterthought. All in all, it’s an excellent summer film that takes the traditional Snow White tale, changes certain traditional plot points and injects some new material in its place. The film keeps the audience on its toes and never feels predictable. With good performances and strong direction, this is one summer blockbuster that won’t put you to sleep. On a scale of 1-10, I give this one a 8.5. My 2¢ -B

Sports By Juan Quintana jquintana@onwnews.com The East Side Softball League proudly introduces the 2012 East Side Meteors team. The team, named after the meteor that fell from the sky on April 11, 2012 and landed in Wolf Lake, has players that range from ages 14-18 years old. Don’t let the age fool you because even the 14 year olds can compete with the 18 year olds. The Meteors are made up of girls who play softball in high schools all over the city of Chicago. The girls come from George Washington, Curie, Lindblom, Brooks, Jones, Mother McCauley, Agricultural Science and Gavit (Indiana) high schools. There is so much talent on this one team, it really is amazing. They are
East Side Softball at Rowan Park already looking forward to becoming an even stronger team next year. The top 10 starters on the team combine for a .427 batting average, 67 hits, 45 runs and 42 RBI. The top leaders are Alexis Villanueva with a batting average of .579 (11 for 19), Dessiree Rivera, .500 (9 for18), Arianna Gomez, .500 (10 for 20) and Amber Sanders, batting .500 (5 for 10). The pitching staff is led by Krystal Vazquez, Amber Sanders and Amanda Kusar. Combined, they have 40 strikeouts in 7 games. Currently, the team is off to a great start with a record of 5-2 in the South Suburban League. They will play through the summer in various tournaments in Illinois and Indiana. Being the first year playing in the South Suburban League, they look forward to
participating in the organized and competitive league for many more years to come. Remaining games for the Meteors are as follows: June 22nd at 7:30pm v. Oak Forest, June 23rd at 11am v. Orland Park, June 25th at 7:30pm v. Tinley Park, June 27th at 7:30pm v. Frankfort, July 7th at 11am v. Bedford Park and July 14th at 11am v. Chicago Ridge. Stop by Rowan Park and enjoy a good game of fast pitch softball. Any questions about East Side Softball League, feel free to stop by the concession stand inside Rowan Park and ask to speak with Jesus Ramirez or Froi Nuñez. T-ball and minor division are also available at Rowan Park.
