Permian✯Basin The Permian Basin got its name from a magic oval created by the Permian Sea many millenniums ago. The climate here can be described as semi-arid. The rainfall averages about 14 inches but varies widely from year to year. Most of the rainfall occurs between April and October and the winter months are traditionally quite dry. The semi-arid climate is generally comfortable particularly in the evening and at nighttime. Located halfway between Ft. Worth and El Paso on the southwestern edge of the High Plains, the altitude ranges from 2,550 to 2,900. Founded primarily as an agricultural center, the Permian Basin’s economic base shifted to oil during the 1920’s and the area rapidly became the administrative and exploration center of a booming industry. Today, our economy is involved in the manufacturing of steel, dairy products, plastics, and electronics. Oil field tools and equipment for a world market are also manufactured here.
