Mini Portfolio Summary

Digital Renders

Digital renders can be used to produce various concepts, colour schemes and design changes in a short time frame. With use of a sketch or a CAD model, the line work can be used to produce a set of visuals, which can be manipulated to explore the concept, or be used to create colour variations quickly. These visuals can be sent off with annotations to clients and manufacturers to aid the progression and understanding of the idea.

Technical Visuals

Graphical visuals used to illustrate technical aspects Being able to get across the whole idea with just one image can be extremely useful, whether it’s to save on website space and advertising, or to create a visual that stands out. Creating composite imagery using Keyshot and Photoshop within the space of an hour that says more is something I enjoy doing, stretching and exploring the possibilities.

Photography

Photo samples for various types of applications Self-taught, with a personal photographic setup, I am capable of taking high-level images for various uses. My previous work has been used for university booklets, yearbooks, small business adverts, sales, and design websites and booklets.

Rendering

Render samples for various types of applications I have experience with Keyshot, 3DSMax and Photoview 360. An interest in photography aided with lighting and composition from the start. 5 years on, creating strong imagery to get the product/idea across is a strong skill of mine. Renders are the same as photos. They can be further enhanced using Photoshop and Lightroom to tweak the style and make them pop. Textures can be added and manipulated, as well as lighting, highlights and shadows. This is a technique I use often to not only save on rendering times, but also to create a more dynamic outcome.

Quick Project Overview

A collection of projects I have worked on, either on my own or in industry To date I have 3 years of university, one of which was with clients, 1 year in industry and over 8 months of freelance work. University provided many hours of useful work and real world like experience, working with real world experts where possible and liaising with clients to gain feedback. I have worked with Bluefrog Design in Leicester for a year, working with very high-end clients and projects, all the way down to smaller private clients and projects. This was an invaluable experience, which made me step up my game from university. Crofts & Assinder are a UK based home hardware company, who produced a brief for a small space living door handle, for places like caravans and narrow boats. With the target consumer in mind, I designed a low profile handle, which won me an award in the Young Furniture Makers event 2015. I’ve designed various documentation for the university, including a workshop guide and the class yearbook. This included most of the photography required. Since graduating, I have worked freelance as a photographer and CAD designer. My photography has been used by a few small businesses for online adverts and product shots. My CAD work has been used by an injection moulding firm for 3D printing applications.

Design For Manufacture

Optimising components for various manufacturing and assembly methods There’s no point designing a fantasy. Being able to design and produce parts that are suited for the desired manufacture methods is key to a products success. I’ve produced parts that were primarily design for FDM printing, thinking about orientation, layers and minimal wall thicknesses. On the other end, I’ve designed parts that were for injection moulding and extrusion. Draft angles, wall thicknesses, radiuses and flow rates are some of the factors to consider. Lowering component count is a key to creating a cost effective product. Using the same part where possible can save on assembly and production costs.
