Kimbra — Somebody We Should All Get To Know

Editor-in-Chief Kirsty Edwards-Harris

All You Need Is Love… song made globally popular by the Beatles in the late 1960s, ‘All You Need Is Love’ was written to spread a straightforward message, which could surpass all language and cultural barriers, with the aim of uniting hearts and minds across the world — that love is truly everything. What a lovely thought — and certainly one to remind ourselves of on a regular basis. While February is most often associated with Valentine’s Day and romantic love, take the time to make all those you care for feel special, whether it be your family, friends or colleagues, or perhaps even a stranger. This month can be one of the hardest times of the year for those alone, much as birthdays, and other family celebrations such as Eid and Christmas, so offer kindness and make a difference in people’s lives — sometimes all it takes to make someone’s day is a smile. To be able to love another unconditionally without surrendering your power, your own identity, your true self, not only that of the labels you are identified with such as wife and mother, sister and daughter, you must first learn to love your own self. This means loving every part of you (even those things you may not like), your attributes and faults, successes and failures, your lumps and bumps. Embrace your self and your inner beauty to be able to accept your self exactly as you are, and know that you’re good enough. Be kind, treat your body as a temple, honour your inner voice and respect your path. Only then, when you are a whole person, can you truly love another.

Her rose-tinted pink shades are Prada Mary Janes with floral appliqués from the Spring 2013 collection, and the finishing touch is a gold Louis Vuitton bracelet.

Diane Kruger Actress and face of Jaeger-LeCoultre, Diane Kruger certainly knows how to turn heads looking beautiful in a striking floor-length tiered Prabal Gurung chiffon gown from the Spring 2013 collection. The blush satin Brian Atwood platform ‘Karin’ sandals and Crow’s Nest ‘Dream Feather’ diamond earrings perfect the look and she adds a playful, funky edge by carrying a Charlotte Olympia Domino Pandora Clutch featuring swarovski crystal detailing.

Uma Thurman Actress Uma Thurman makes a statement in this chic custom-made black three-button Atelier Versace suit with satin trim on the occasion of the premiere of her new film ‘Playing for Keeps' held at AMC Loews Lincoln Square. The Cause

The ARTronauts: Inspiring Change Through Art A young group of artists are mobilising collective problem-solving and addressing social issues in Kuwait through a shared passion for creativity and in the process, redefining art… ‘Edit the Present’ “Our intention is to mobilise every young artist poised to influence change in the twenty-first century through original artwork,” says Professor Roma Soni, full-time lecturer of Graphic Design and Interior Design at Kuwait’s Box Hill University and mentor of the ARTronauts, a Kuwait-based group of 16 art enthusiasts and budding artists across all nationalities and universities. Guided by their motto to ‘Edit the Present’ and united by their passion for creativity and social causes, this dynamic group (founded in early 2012), works relentlessly all year round to create cultural, social and environmental art based on social design. “We aim to bring a change in our environment and our beautiful world, through the medium of art and design by raising awareness in the community and recognising our social responsibility,” Professor Soni explains. 28

Ohlala! I February 2013 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

The organic nature of the group’s growth and its distinct art methodology from conceptualisation to communication mirrors its very inception. Drawing from her own inspiration to create eco-friendly art and transferring a multi-cultural perspective (having exhibited her art and design in India, Istanbul, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia), Professor Soni brought together her students, as well as other young artists in Kuwait to celebrate Earth Day in April 2012 by creating and exhibiting original artwork at Reuse 5.0, an eco-living forum and expo in Kuwait. The unconventionality and vibrancy of their work with intelligent adaption of art theory into social messaging soon caught the attention of the wider community, encouraging the artists to produce more art straight from the heart under the collective name of the ARTronauts. Today the ARTronauts prides itself on its 16 active artists, a commendable number given the fast pace of life they brave to consistently produce new work year-round, having exhibited at up to

eight art exhibitions and workshops in just 2012. Aged between 19 and 26, this core team comprises nationals of Kuwait, Lebanon, Syria, India, Pakistan and the USA.

Engaging the Community Perhaps the single most noteworthy contribution of the ARTronauts has been demonstrating how to think out of the box, by taking art beyond the classroom and the gallery into everyday life and public space. 20-year-old Alaa Khalifa from Kuwait tells us, «Art is not only something you see displayed in an exhibition. In fact, we are all surrounded by art. Some people think that art is not important because they can survive without it. I believe this is what makes art very valuable, because it adds joy to your life. When you choose to display an art piece you created in your house, it lends a sense of sharing and accomplishment.” 23-year-old Azmi Ezzo from Lebanon concurs, “As Picasso said, the purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls. Some people have the gift of understanding art, others don’t. Those who do are blessed because they see life from a different perspective and are able to share that with those who don’t yet.” Bashayer Al Shamari, a budding 23-year-old ARTronaut from Kuwait whose work won the social art category at REUSE 5.0 sees art as a way to communicate with society by translating issues, emotions and feelings into visuals through the elements of design such as colour and shapes and form. This grounds their philosophy. It takes a great deal of passion to create and to edit the twenty-first century, Professor Soni stresses. As a mentor, she guides the ARTronauts in research, brainstorming, sketching and inspiration derived from the environment to help artists come up with ideas before creating a piece of artwork. Using environment friendly materials is strongly encouraged while ensuring the underlying message of the artwork is lucid for public comprehension. Each artwork is as such a dialogue between the audience and the social concern it channels, making the experience interactive, alive and thought-provoking. No two artworks are the same, even within a series by the same ARTronaut. Through method, composition or materials, their artwork encourages people to take a new look at existing meanings. For instance, recycling need not necessarily be confined to just paper and plastic. Using egg crates collected by her family and friends at her insistence, Bashayer Al-Shammari created a 3D pixellated image of the late King

of Pop and Um Kalthoum. 20-year-olds Alia Al-Qabandi and Jena AlAwadhi from Kuwait used metal and discarded or broken toys to create unique sculptures, neckpieces and a food-for-thought wall frame. 20-year-old Alaa Khalifa from Kuwait, gave a new spin to decoupage while celebrating the texture of paper, script font and the human form, creating portraits of celebrities from scraps of magazine paper. 23-year-old Dhari Al-Qabandi from Kuwait salvaged the broken back half of a car to create a viable and aesthetically executed couch, quite a focal point in any setting. 23-year-old Unsa Khalid from Pakistan created a vivid Mandala using the top of a table and plastic shopping bags of different colours, urging one to contemplate an eco-conscious lifestyle. She also teamed up with 23-year-old Muneera Al Safran to make picture frames and curtain panels with discarded pieces of fabric. Drawing attention to Kuwait’s rich marine bio-diversity and the impact of pollution on marine habitat, 20-year-old Deeksha Soni from India created a life-size 3D diver entirely formed from a collection of plastic bags found at the beach over several months.

Problem solving Through Art Going ahead, with a string of exhibitions lined up in the first half of 2013, the ARTronauts are keen to grow their number, and see more public dialogue around social art and collective problem-solving. “We would love to see more concept based art and ideas that stimulate change for the better,” Professor Soni notes. “Art should make a person stop to think, observe and participate.” There’s a joy in using materials that are strange and different, Jena shares. “Whether it›d be screws and nails or the entire backseat of a car, we try to motivate young people to think carefully before littering and to try and think of ways to recycle creatively, rather than opt for the conventional way of using recycling bins.” It also makes people think twice before they shop, promoting responsible consumerism and waste management. Knowing that they can change the world as we know it into a better place just by doing what they love through art, lends the ARTronauts a sense of making a difference. As 21-year-old Sara Ismail from Kuwait says on a closing note, “It’s everything I could ask for as an artist!”

“Art should make a person stop to think, observe and participate.”

Art & Culture

Art with a Heart Making his name in Kuwait’s art scene almost by chance, Kuwaiti pop artist, Hamad Al Saab has come a long way from having his works hidden from view, to a cult following that has given him success and acclaim.

“Art became my meditation, where I would lock my doors, put on music and just let go.” 30

Ohlala! I February 2013 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

H

amad, is a contradiction of sorts, he’s an artist at heart yet still manages a day job as an internal auditor. Hamad has always sketched since childhood, where he mostly hid his work from the public and instead always thought it ought to be something kept within the confines of his own home. However the "burden of life" finally took its toll and to counteract the hectic pace of life he gave in to his urge to let go. "Art became my meditation, where I would lock my doors, put on music and just let go." After having put together his first series in collaboration with a partner, the pieces were displayed at a local coffee lounge upon the request of the owner who wanted some artwork to vamp up the décor. To Hamad and the owner’s surprise, the pieces started selling. The idea of selling the work eventually became a feasible means to find a way into people’s homes and establishments. Over time, the pop-art style started to gain popularity and Hamad went into various collaborations with fellow artists to create lines as an ode to Arabic music heritage. Featuring singers such as Aisha Marta, Um Kalthoum and Mahmoud Al Kuwaiti — all strong influences on Hamad whilst growing up in Kuwait, his wish to honour them went down very well among the youth and older generations alike. Hamad went on to donate some of his work to various establishments for charity and found great comfort in giving back to the community with his time and effort to aid children’s and art societies and galleries. Hamad’s love for mentorship also grew, and he found that the youth were very interested in art in general. Due to the tricky nature of art as a vocation, most questions Hamad faced were from up and coming artists trying to find their footing in the art world. Hamad is also heavily involved with his clients. Those who purchased his work generally needed his input when hanging the larger pieces, so Hamad started advising his clients on the best places to hang the work, and slowly but surely his interest in interior design found its way into the mix of services he offered to clients. “I always want to meet my clients, I get to know them well and ask them why they chose certain pieces of work over others, and with time I’ve grown very close to them. They are very dear to me, and so I love that I’ve left a part of myself with them. This is a long way from the days when my sketchbook never left the house,” he relates. Hamad’s studio has served as a place for young artists to come and work, and Hamad has lent his advice and mentorship to them as well as help them store their pieces for safekeeping. Asked why he doesn’t start a mentorship foundation of his own in Kuwait, he states that his aim is to do so when the time comes and the right sponsors will hopefully become available. Hamad’s latest body of work was put on display at the West Elm furniture store at the new phase of the Avenues Mall to great success and acclaim.

Woman in Power

“She has come far by bringing to light controversial issues currently inherent in Arab society to the attention of many and for the eyes of all.

Powerful Imagery Shourouq Amin is a Kuwaiti artist and poet whose art conveys potent messages that hold their own even under intense scrutiny.

O

n the surface, Shorouq is a soft-spoken, intuitive woman born with a gift. An acclaimed artist, she has received a flurry of attention of late due to her uncensored imagery featured in a series of work entitled ‘It’s a Man’s World”. Shorouq’s messages and opinion are clear to all, for she has come far by bringing to light controversial issues currently inherent in Arab society to the attention of many and for the eyes of all. As a consequence, she has put the taboos being broken behind closed doors under the spotlight for dissection. Shorouq holds a masters degree in Modern Literature (Modern Poetry) and a PhD in Modern Ekphrastic Poetry, a style or type of poetry inspired by art. She currently holds a professorship at Kuwait University. Born to a Kuwaiti father and Syrian mother, Shorouq was raised to appreciate art from a young age, her father was a lover of art and an artist himself who eagerly encouraged his daughter when he recognised her organic abilities from early on, which not only included drawing and sketching but also writing. In order for her to sharpen her skills, her father ensured to expose her to every museum in Europe and at the age of nine submitted her work to the National Council of Art for a group exhibit — marking Shorouq’s first public exhibit. After her father’s passing, Shorouq’s mother continued to support her and bought her the first set of oil paints and an easel when she was thirteen. Consequently Shorouq never stopped and in time realised she loved to create stories in her collections, which eventually evolved into serried work. Shorouq went on to get married and have children, yet she never stopped working writing or painting and exhibiting while taking care of her first-born daughter. She joined the Kuwait Arts Association, and represented Kuwaiti artists at regional and international art fairs. Shorouq’s breakthrough came about after she called time on her marriage and found herself emerging from one stage of life into another. She stopped using oils and paints and started working with collages and acrylics, and ended up with her first hit series of paintings entitled, ‘The Society Girls’ which was exhibited in the well reputed Tilal Gallery, and the pieces ended up in many art lovers’ collections due to the cult status that they earned.

Her other work, ‘The Bullet Series’ ended up exhibited at the Lahd Gallery in London. The body of work was entitled as such as actual bullets were shot through specific parts of each painting. Each piece had its own respective Hornet bullet, all shot from 50 metres away. This concept was unique enough to warrant a documentary film, which recorded the entire process. However, it was Shorouq’s series “It’s a Man’s World” that surprisingly caught the attention of much of the art world when her exhibit was shut down a mere three hours after the opening, due to the supposed ‘sensitive subject matter’ which unnerved many. News agencies worldwide got wind of the incident and an explosion of debate took place. Shourouq inadvertently made her mark on the art community. A month later, Shorouq began receiving an outpour of emails from people in various countries sending their support. “What truly touched me were the heartwarming emails from young girls who, due to various restrictions preventing them from following their passion for art, couldn’t. The subject matter in this series scared people, and although many referred to my series as an attempt to ruffle people’s feathers, that was not the intention; being an artist is all about opening people’s eyes to reality. “It was a period of revelation for me finding out who was truly open-minded and who wasn’t in their work. I heard various rumours about my intentions behind ‘It’s a Man’s World’.” All the attention Shourouq has received served to increase people’s awareness and stirred more response towards a semblance of an art revolution of sorts. This incident shows that a person’s determination to reach a certain objective is hard to overcome. Shorouq has auctioned her pieces at Christie’s auction house, and consequently, the offers poured in from London and Dubai. This highlight in Shorouq’s career prompted her to start working on her third series entitled ‘Popcornographic’, which also addresses a controversial subject matter. It would seem that Shorouq has begun a new chapter in her life after having an offer from Ayam Gallery to permanently represent and exhibit her work. Ayam has branches in Damascus, Beirut, Dubai and London and her work will be featured alongside other contemporary of Middle Eastern artists. When asked how she feels about this, she tell us, “This is a relief for me, I can now concentrate on painting which is what I want to do.” 33

Kimbra — Somebody We Should All Get To Know Paden R Vaughan spent time at the Rhythm & Vines Festival in New Zealand and met up with one of its main stage act stars, Kimbra, an artist destined for big things in 2013.

A

s I entered the Waiohika Estate house, all the glitz and glamour of the magnificent mansion seemed a far cry from the exciting and almost chaotic atmosphere of the Rhythm & Vines Festival, taking place just metres away. I was there to interview singer/songwriter 22-year-old Kimbra, a native New Zealander with a larger-than-life on stage persona but a much more modest and down-to-earth personality off stage. Born Kimbra Lee Johnson, she grew up in Hamilton, the daughter of a head doctor and an orthopaedic nurse. At a very early age she began writing songs, and when she was 12 her father bought her a guitar, and so she found her direction in life. “I didn't dream of having my name in lights; music made me feel very elated and I wanted to be able to use that to make others feel the same. I knew it would always be part of my life very early on. It was never something I decided to do; I just felt drawn to it. “I had plans of going to university, but it just didn't feel natural; I knew in my heart that music was the path for me, and I feel it has always existed for me, deep in my subconscious.” And her talent seemed to match her determination; she won the well-established New Zealand competition Rockquest at just 14 years old. After that, it was clear that this young Kiwi was one to watch. Early public performances included singing at the Waikato Times Gold Cup race meeting and singing the New Zealand national anthem in front of 27,000 people at the 2002 NPC rugby union final. In 2007 she won the Juice TV Award for Best Breakthrough music video for her single ‘Simply On My Lips’ and it was at this point that she came to the attention of ex-Independiente Records boss Mark Richardson (of Jamiroquai and Paula Abdul fame) and his newly formed management company. “When Mark called and offered me the opportunity to record an album, I knew instantly that it was meant to be! Soon after I signed and relocated to Australia.” Having released her debut album 'Vows' internationally earlier last year, with influences from Stevie Wonder all the way through to Guided By Voices, Kimbra’s musical style has been

35

Celebrity Scoop

classified as jazz-inspired electropop, fused with catchy melodies and an often unpredictable quality that has won her critical acclaim. To many, her unforgettable appearance in the global chart success ‘Somebody I Used To Know’ by Gotye, brought the young star justified global recognition. “Playing Coachella festival in the US was a truly unforgettable experience; to have gained such a wide reach across the globe is something I am eternally grateful for. But for me it's always and will always be more special playing at home in New Zealand. “I've been lucky to have worked with some fantastic artists and incredible people and although many people like to focus on the negatives of the industry, there's so much that's positive about it. I believe this overrules any negativity.” So what lies ahead for this determined young performer? “I'm into the second album now; which is a fresh slate for a new year. I've not stopped writing for a second. Like I said: music will always be a part of me! And there's no better place to do what I love than in my home country.” 36

Ohlala! I February 2013 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

And after seeing her main stage performance at December’s Rhythm & Vines festival, it's safe to say that for Kimbra, music is her destiny. But as her star rises and the commercial aspects of the music industry begin to influence her career, is she comfortable merging her creativity with the obvious demands of what is ultimately a business? “It’s a little scary when you suddenly begin to see your music interpreted on a completely different scale, but I believe the key is to remain true to the ideals that brought me here and to never allow the commercial interests to compromise my craft.” Daring, eccentric and certainly not your traditional pop star — she is nevertheless exactly the kind of personality the industry needs, and 2013 should see this huge talent globally recognised. 'Vows' is available through all media outlets and for those of you keen on learning more about Kimbra be sure to visit her website at www.kimbramusic.com

Eclectic Expressions

Artistic and design director of the pioneering watch brand JaegerLeCoultre, Janek Deleskiewicz is a gifted creative and aficionado of the Arts, as Kirsty Edwards-Harris found out during their inspirational chat. 48

Ohlala! I February 2013 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

W

orking in the Design Department of JaegerLeCoultre for 23 years, Janek Deleskiewicz is the author behind many a masterpiece of horology and elegance. Of Polish origin, Janek grew up immersed in the French culture, where travel and the Arts became second nature to him. His style is imbued with the influence of his many experiences, which Janek believes is integral to the growth of all, as it enables them to become a more rounded person, fueling the imagination, and so their creativity.

Has creativity always been an intrinsic part of who you are? Janek Deleskiewicz. Ever since I was born, I’ve always been creative in different ways, such as drawing, music and painting. As a child I discovered different ways of practicing creativity and it became a game. I took imagination and representation and linked them with the moment. I was very influenced by the 50s, 60s and 70s, it was normal for me to imagine what could be next and have the representation of the world in mind. As a child, were you immersed in the creative world? JD. My mother was French and a director of a private school, my father was Polish and in business. Both were integral to my upbringing and creative nature. My father went to England during the war, and then joined the army to fight in Norway; afterwards he went to the North of Scotland then came to France. The interesting stories of his travels, and his ability to speak many languages, helped to develop my imagination and fuel my interest for travel.

“I had a very eclectic education, many years of different influences and artistic avenues; it’s great for developing the imagination.”

49

FASHION How has your culture influenced your designs? JD. My family culture, Europe all along my life, the difference between countries, travelling to China, the United States, the perceptions of culture are totally different to each other. It’s lovely to meet people and get to know them and where they come from.

Of all your creations, which is your personal favourite? JD. All the watches and different expressions we develop, as well as those coming from past, I like for different reasons. New innovations in recent and contemporary watches are very important for me. What advice would you give to people when buying a watch? JD. It depends on the personality, certain characters know what they want and don’t want. For a woman I may propose the RendezVous watch, and perfect craftsmen work on it — one of the best new developments there is. Many women prefer to find their own watches on their travels. Like reading a book, it’s important to know what you are buying. It’s necessary to learn and educate yourself, so you can understand what you wearing on your wrist.

As an artist yourself, who do you most admire and why? JD. There are many artists in my mind, from Van Gogh, Picasso and Salvador Dali to Andy Warhol, but I also admire the actors and directors of movies. In this career, it’s necessary to know many things in order to develop, such as dancing, music, theatre, movies, painting, sculpture and Art nouveau. I discuss with young designers if they play instruments outside of work, or are a painter etc. as it’s necessary to live with an active education beyond school and work. From where do you draw your inspiration? JD. Travel, life experiences; I went to Mauritius at Christmas for example, which was very important for me to share, to embrace the culture. It’s nice to have change in life; it helps to understand what can be the next innovation, the next watch. 50

What formal design background do you have? JD. I’m unusual in this industry in that I have a technical background as many designers go to artistic schools. It’s an advantage for me, as it’s very important to have knowledge of the technical aspects of the business. It means that I can easily discuss in the factory with the engineers. After my technical baccalaureate I went to an art college. After hours I went to a private school for further education in drawings, painting, sculpture etc, and discussed with friends and played music with them. I had a very eclectic education, many years of different influences and artistic avenues; it’s great for developing the imagination.

My mother practiced music and educated my brother and sister and I in the Arts. We got to experience theatre, concerts, opera and exhibitions from a young age. I believe it’s very important, necessary even, to learn things outside of school such as these. All the different things we do socially also have effects on the watch industry.

Thin

Is there a particular watch that would be the perfect gift for Valentine’s Day? JD. We work on collections every year for Valentine’s Day and also propose personalised engravings. It’s a nice moment to show sentiment to each other and a watch is a natural gift to offer to your loved one on Valentine’s Day. We also have a new Reverse with a Valextra strap. Which Jaeger-LeCoultre watches would you advise women to invest in this coming Spring Summer? JD. Depends on what you’re wearing, the seasonal trends, what activities you are doing. Perhaps in the summer, you’d prefer to have white strap or in a lighter colour to adapt to your clothes. It’s useful when you go on holiday to wear sportive watches, as they can be used in all conditions.

“Like reading a book, it’s important to know what you are buying. It’s necessary to learn and educate yourself, so you can understand what you wearing on your wrist.” What has been the biggest challenge in your career and how did you overcome it? JD. The biggest challenge is to imagine the next collection because we are working two years in advance of the current one, and now we must think for 2015. It’s not easy to imagine the choices of men and women everywhere in the world two years into the future. But it’s so exciting to discuss options with the team, in different ways, what’s the next challenge. We start with nothing, only the white paper and imagine the future. We don’t know the trends in two year’s time; we need to imagine what these can be. What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? JD. Always be satisfied with what you do, if you are not enthusiastic about what you can do, it can be a great enemy of the future. I must be very careful when finishing the development of a new product, as I want to know exactly what can be better for next time.

What are your creative aspirations for the future? JD. To speak with kids and the new generation because I started with Jaeger-LeCoultre 20 years ago, and am now working with my team of young designers and some of them are in their 20s — some weren’t even born when I started to work with the brand. It’s very important to speak with the next generation as they will be different, and they are the future. What do you enjoy doing in your own time? JD. What I love to do is to play music with friends. Because it’s not my job, I’m free to play with them and enjoy the moment.

What more do you want from life? JD. I’m not a collector and I don’t want to have more and more of everything. I’m happy with what I have; my career, family life, friends, and all the people I have around me and in my social life. It’s essential to wake up every morning and have a good program and with that I can be happy. I hope this life will continue and I’m very happy to spend all these years in this design job it’s one of the best lives I could dream of, like what I used to dream of when I was a kid.

BEAUTY

A Thing of Beauty… …is indeed a joy forever. To say that Bassam Fattouh is passionate about beauty and makeup is an understatement; they are, in fact, his life. From his dream start in Beirut over a decade ago, his now bursting portfolio of celebrity clients is proof enough that a steely determination to follow one’s aspirations eventually pays off. With his very own cosmetics line, he talks exclusively to Ohlala! about what it takes to make it big in the beauty industry, his inspiration and his vision for the future.

“Don’t imitate, but create. We are here to make a difference.”

B

assam has been fond of makeup and beauty ever since he was little. When he was about six years old, Bassam remembers sketching makeup on models’ faces in magazines, and applying makeup on his mum’s face. It was a long time after that however, during the end of his high school life, when he realised that being involved in the arts, through makeup, was his ultimate passion. 56

Ohlala! I February 2013 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

What particular memory are you fond of from when you were starting out? Bassam Fattouh. The arts captivated me in all possible ways, so upon receiving my diploma in Paris, I moved back to Lebanon and turned my dreams into reality by opening my institute in Beirut in the summer of 1997. This was the critical turning point in my career, especially as I was the first makeup artist in the Middle East to advertise work on billboards.

Considering the traditional mentality that women are more likely to be in this line of business than men, did anyone around you object to your career choice? BF. No one objected but then neither did anyone encourage me. When I finally decided to go into the makeup industry, everything went smoothly.

You’ve worked with so many celebrities in the Middle East. Who’s your favourite face? BF. There’s no privilege in this industry. My work comes straight from my heart. I’ve worked on the world’s most glamourous faces but every woman that sits on my chair is the most beautiful woman, it’s her moment! I have no favourite face. However, Haifa Wehbe inspired me all along my career and I’ve gained most of my expertise while applying makeup on her beautiful features — she’s my muse.

Your makeup line offers quite a range products. What pushed you to develop your own? BF. I was fascinated by the world of arts: colours, shapes, feelings. Based on years and years of experience, I used my inspiration to develop everything I love about makeup in one line, a line that combines luxury with practical functionality and innovation. What inspires you to create a product? BF. Everything! Fashion inspires me, styles, fabrics, product names, nature, and shoes! It’s all about fantasy.

What would you say was the defining moment in your career? BF. Every step has been a defining moment to evaluate and to improve. I have always been confident about my talent and my choices. The use of daring colours in an artistic way was very critical to me.

What’s your advice to anyone wishing to pursue a career or business in this particular field? BF. Believe in your talent; follow your feelings, intuition and heart. Don’t imitate, but create. We are here to make a difference.

What makeup trend should people look out for this coming Spring Summer? BF. One of the biggest trends to watch out for in the Spring Summer season is all about a sheer look and flawless transparent skin. To achieve this, you can use bold colour lipsticks to make the skin stand out and give you that ‘natural look’. For the base foundation, pick one that gives a sheer and luminous coverage to even out the complexion. Lastly, apply a translucent and light powder for more radiance. So what’s next for Bassam Fattouh? BF. I’ll be developing the brand further and I’m planning on going global.

T

he 2013 model Lexus GS 350 is a wonderful mid-size luxury sports sedan. It is slightly wider and taller than the predecessor, with a modern and more assertive looking exterior design. Accompanying the exterior makeover the cabin is also revised, reflecting the best Lexus traditions with its handsome and finely crafted interior marked by soft leather with subtly pronounced stitching details, and rich wood and aluminium trim. The atmosphere is luxurious, quiet and comfortable. The seats are firm while at the same time cosseting, coming with the optional 18-way electronic adjustments for tailored comfort. The cockpit is ergonomically laid out with clearly separated display and operation zones. The multimedia system comes with a wide 12.3 inch Electro Multi Vision (EMV) display with a navigation system, parking assist camera and it also acts as a home theatre system. The infotainment system is very effortlessly controlled with Remote Touch, a mouse-like joystick located on the centre console. The menus are easy to navigate and the cursor “snaps” into place when you get near your choice on the screen. The sound-system is excellent, and can also be controlled from the rear seats. There’s a three-zone climate control system available with an optional and very innovative “nanoe” technology, which releases microscopic negatively charged “nanoe” particles in the cabin. Not only do these particles help purify the cabin air and deodorise the seats and upholstery, but — wait for this — best of all they display a healthy moisturising effect on your skin and hair. Now that’s sure to be a hit with all the lady drivers, beauty treatments from your car while you’re cruising around! The GS 350 is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine delivering 312-horsepower. It moves very swiftly, accelerating from zero to 100-kilometres per hour in a very nice 6.3-seconds. The engine feels powerful and there are plenty of power reserves to accelerate, even at faster speeds. The handling is superbly smooth; the steering is very responsive and it is a real pleasure to drive. There are three different driving modes to choose from, Eco, Sport S and Sport S+. You can choose to drive on the automatic mode, or on the manual mode with the paddle shifts if you are in dynamic sport mood. Among many others the standard safety systems include traction and stability controls, ABS and brake assist systems, multitude of airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors. Security system and engine immobiliser (which is a theft deterrent system) are also standard features. If you are looking for a car that is fun but family friendly at the same time, the GS 350 is a good choice. The rear is spacious enough to accommodate children — and adults too — very comfortably,

and the rear and side window blinds create a relaxed atmosphere at the back. The boot accommodates pushchairs and family grocery shopping very well. It is great family car and at the same time due to the fine performance and lovely driving characteristics, it is also a fantastic car to have fun with. Well done Lexus!

Giovanni unveils your future for February… The month of Love

Happy Birthday Ms Aquarius February is naturally the month for romance and for your sign this could have special significance when a face from the past makes an unexpected appearance in your life around February 22. You’ll soon discover that your feelings haven’t changed for this particular individual and the temptations could prove too great to resist. If you’re looking for short term excitement to exhilarate a fairly barren period in your life then this experience may very well do the trick but don’t expect a serious commitment. What it might just do is help you to rediscover that confidence and desire to go out and find what it is you’re really looking for.

Aquarius — at a glance (January 20 – February 18)

Oprah Winfrey

Aquarians are creative and imaginative, although they are better at dreaming up ideas than putting them into practice. True visionaries and leaders, they think outside the box and are often seen as great thinkers but have an innate fear of boredom in their lives. Without excitement they can often struggle to develop, which can make them quite demanding in a relationship. They also make very good friends and value companionship, which makes them loyal. They’re free-spirited and because they value their independence, they are not always equipped to be the best lovers. If they feel trapped then they will seek out any excuse to break free. Aquarians can be stubborn in their opinions and often become impatient with those who don’t see their point of view and disagree with them. They are also very independent, often making them seem cold and detached and even rebellious on occasions.

Aries (March 20 – April 19)

You’ve had a lot on your mind of late when it comes to health concerns but fortunately recent findings will put your mind at rest, allowing you to focus instead on more important matters. February is going to be a particularly busy month for you and alongside work; a redecoration project could be on the cards. The start of 2013 will seem a lot more positive than the previous year and you should ride the momentum to the max!

GEMINI (May 21 – June 20)

New love is just around the corner and this Valentine’s Day could see you celebrating in a surprising fashion. Everything that happens will be unexpected, making it even more exciting and when you finally take stock of your situation, you’ll be exactly where you’ve always wanted to be. The only thing to worry about is how to make more time to be with that special person!

Pisces (February 19 – March 19)

This month may well see you finding new love by way of a completely untraditional route, and though some of you are looking to start a fresh relationship, this will nevertheless still come as a complete surprise to you. Don’t look at Valentine’s Day as a reason to get into a relationship. Rather just see it as a bonus if the opportunity comes your way.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) You’ve emerged from a period of self-doubt and confusion into a much more stable and positive frame of mind for 2013. This year is set to open many new doors, and for some, a developing romance is going to prove to be the icing on a most successful February. You are going to be so preoccupied that you simply won’t know what to progress first, so put a plan together and make sure you stick with it. Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

February may not be the best month for your sign after whispers of a deceitful partner reach your ears from an unlikely female source and you suffer the painful truth of infidelity. Question the intentions of the person who reveals the matter to you and examine their long-term motives. All is clearly not as it should be and though you need to address the problems in your current relationship there is a wider jealousy issue that could damage your long term prospects in the future.

LEO (July 23 – August 22)

Virgo (August 23 — September 22)

Libra September 23 – October 22

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

Love is the primary topic for you this month and events are moving even faster than you expected. You may even need to take a step back whilst you try and catch your breath. You are advised not to go looking for problems and instead, simply sit back and enjoy the ride. It’s still early days — so make the most of what you have discovered! It is set to be a very memorable Valentine’s Day in particular. There is a face in the crowd that has an interested eye on you this month and it could point towards the start of a new relationship and a major change in how your love life develops this year. The only problem could be that the person in question is currently living with someone else, and before you embark on anything you need to ensure that they part company from their present relationship, or things could very quickly become messy and complicated.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) Romantically things may seem uninspired at the moment and events both at home and work have contributed to this feeling. Free up some time with a partner to rejuvenate your relationship. It’s often the little things in life that make all the difference and you’d be surprised how easy this can be to fix. Book a weekend away and it won’t be long before you realise what you’ve been missing.

Your sign is not often seen as being one of the most romantic, which is unfair in many respects. You have a more logical approach to life but it doesn’t mean you’re unable to demonstrate your feelings. This month you‘ll find yourself entangled in a rather complicated love triangle and though the temptation to analyse and solve the situation logically will cross your mind, you’ll soon realise that on this occasion your heart and not your head offers the final solution.

As an emotional sign you are often mistaken for being closed and rather difficult to reach when in truth you just tend to keep things quite deep. Those of you with a romantic interest may need to shed that exterior wall and open up a little if you are to truly entice the person who has captured your heart. You don’t like taking risks, or moving outside of your comfort zone but on this occasion, it might be necessary if you really want to make this one work.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) Emotionally you have enjoyed a good period with a partner and as a consequence you’re feeling more secure in a relationship than perhaps you ever have before. Improvements at work are bringing you a new sense of confidence and this will help you as you put a business project through its final planning phase before it is launched at the end of the month.

Lifestyle Lowdown Your monthly musings with Rozan Ahmed…

“I decided to make January my month of clarity, four weeks of unadulterated relax, replenish and cleanse in preparation for this glorious year ahead.”

G

reetings from Koh Samui, a cute little island in Thailand. Drenched in palm trees, beaches and wellness, over flowing with spas, detox retreats and replenishing souls, all of whom have made the choice to ‘vacay’ with the added bonus of physically and mentally boosting their bods. I decided to make January my month of clarity, four weeks of unadulterated relax, replenish and cleanse in preparation for this glorious year ahead. Now, the simpler term to all that's going on at the moment would be known as a ‘detox’, as is associated with drug addicts, alcoholics and some kind of rehabilitation set up. Wrong. A detox is to simply and essentially rid your body of toxins. Here's some bad news: most of us are filled with them, much thanks to processed foods, stressful lifestyles, smoking, not enough sleep, and just the general day to day drama we tend to put ourselves through. Here's some good news: there are multiple solutions available to ensure you "maintain the temple" ...such as the one I chose: partaking in a regimented program of basic starvation, which lasts about a week. It's painful, and tiresome (yet oddly idyllic), with wondrous — and immediat — benefits. Allow me to break things down: The food: Well, there is none. You're put on a diet of specially concocted juices and broths. Depending on how long your program is, this can continue for up to two weeks. It's supposed to get your body into "cleanse overdrive", eradicating the toxins and purifying internal organs. The exercise: Much like a boot camp, your day begins at 6am with a 90-minute hike, followed by 90 minutes of yoga, and then (!) 60 minutes of hardcore cardio. Doing all this is of course a mild hell, particularly for someone who despises the gym. Doing all this with no food in your system — whatsoever — is a new level of torture. The colonics: Google the definition if you're unsure. Then add to your discovery, "selfadministered". Indeed, not pretty. The highlight: A liver flush. This consists of drinking orange juice, ginger, garlic and OLIVE OIL, followed by Epsom salt water, and an overnight date with the toilet. The lessons: Multiple workshops on nutrition, preventative tips on maintaining, rather than treating, and [quite scary] reality checks on just how awful processed food really is. The perks:

Ohlala! I February 2013 I www.ohlala-magazine.com

A mee

Thai massages — daily. The results: Where do I begin... Lighter, healthier, stronger, more energetic, and completely revitalised... My hair's grown, so have my nails (very quickly), the whites of my eyes are more white, dark circles gone and skin cleared — with an added glow. Thanks to no edible anything for almost two weeks, it's now near impossible for me to eat heavier, fattier foods, even if I wanted to. Exercising has, shockingly, become enjoyable. Let us hope (and pray, and pray some more) that things remain this way. So... there you have it. And I cannot say it enough. You owe this to your body. So much so that I'm actually setting up a program for a number of us ladies to undergo in 2014. A "bougi detox" if you will. It's really not as gruesome as it sounds. Especially once I curate a little bit of lux into the mix. AND... since holidays are supposed to revive (not exhaust), this is, definitively, the way to break. If you're interested in coming along send your requests through to tellmemore@bougi.net. We're accepting ten ladies. Small and bespoke, as we do. In other Thai-related news, Koh Samui's spa count is heavenly. I actually think there's more of my self-spoil havens here than there are homes. The beaches aren't wonderful. Little dirty to be honest. In fact most of the island's a little dirty. There seems to be a problem with litter — and collecting it. Don't like this. The markets are quite thrilling, hustled and bustled with all sorts of Thai artefacts. Massages on most public beaches are available for approximately four US dollars (cheap insanity). Tourists from Russia are all over the place. And Israel. The airport looks like a pretty conservatory. Shopping is wonderful for natural beauty products, with coconut oil, papaya soap and ginseng being my personal faves. An inspiring excursion with monks left me tearfully touched. The level of peace in each of these humbly powerful human beings was almost overwhelming. Made a donation toward their building of a temple. Then, I signed a brick. Thank you Thailand. All set. Ready and raring. 2013... Let us refreshingly begin. Visit: www.rozanahmed.com Like: www.facebook.com/bougi tweet: @IamRozan
