FOREWORD This is the first contemporary sculpture show to be held in the gardens of Great Fosters and we are delighted to have the opportunity to showcase the work of nine talented contemporary sculptors. We believe that the gardens provide an ideal setting for their exciting, innovative sculptures. Great Fosters’ gardens, originally designed in the 1920s by WH Romaine Walker and Gilbert Jenkins, are considered to be amongst the finest Arts and Crafts gardens in Europe. Over the past 20 years, they have been extensively restored by our Head Gardener, Russell Dixon and his team. The addition of a grass amphitheatre, lake and ‘secret’ gardens, created by the renowned landscape architect Kim Wilkie, have further enhanced the original design. We very much look forward to welcoming you at Great Fosters to experience the diverse works on display, and hope that you derive as much enjoyment from them as we do.

SCULPTURE AL FRESCO ‘Al fresco’ an Italian expression meaning literally ‘in the fresh’ or ‘in the open air’...
This meaning has been used in English since at least the late 18th century. For example, in Mrs. Eliza Haywood's History of Jemmy and Jenny Jessamy, 1753: "It was good for her ladyship's health to be thus alfresco." The French equivalent is en plein air, describing an activity done outside, usually painting. The exhibition Sculpture Al Fresco is incorporating the English use of the Italian expression – ‘in the open air’ - and applying it to the activity of sculpture, the act, process or art of carving or molding material. In this exhibition, materials range from bronze, onyx, steel and stone to glass, wood, roofing felt, fibreglass and polystyrene. Sculpture Al Fresco examines British sculpture of the twenty-first century against the backdrop of the house and gardens of Great Fosters, a former royal hunting lodge dating back to 1550 AD. This juxtaposition of old and new encourages the public to engage with these works in new and different ways, allowing them to make new connections and highlighting what is best about British sculpture today. This show focusing on fourteen sculptural works made over the last two years by nine emerging to established contemporary artists represents a unique view of the development of British sculpture right now and includes some of the most original sculptors working today. Each of the artists is British in their own right, either having been born in the UK or chosen to exhibit here. Carole Andrews is a Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors and her work is shown widely across the UK and USA. Carole Andrew’s work reflects her interest in the natural world. The characteristics of wild and cultivated plants are often starting points for her work. Her body of work is a ‘personal creative journey, uninfluenced by others’. Carole is exhibiting two groups of sculptures at Great Fosters, Red Sentinels and Franchetti Blue, each made of roofing felt, resin and paint and crying out to be touched due to the tactile texture of the materials she uses. The inspiration for Red Sentinels comes from a group of large conifers at the entrance to her home that, according to Andrews, ‘stand guarding her house’ but are close enough to be ‘always in conversation with each other’. Alexander Hoda’s work has gone from strength to strength since graduating from the Royal Academy Schools in 2008. Hoda’s work has been widely exhibited since graduation, having solo exhibitions in New York, London, Berlin and Melbourne, Australia. Earlier this year, Hoda was part of the Newspeak: British Art Now exhibition of current British artists at the Saatchi Gallery. At Great Fosters, Hoda is exhibiting The Dancers, which is based on Ralph Brown's Meat Porters, a piece of monumental public sculpture commissioned in 1962 by Harlow Town Council, Essex. Hoda's interpretation of the bronze original strives to revitalise the work, exposing new and surprising readings. An exact copy of the original was made in wax and heated to a point where the sculpture’s figuration began to dissolve. The figures were thereby melted into a near-abstract blob, which Hoda compares to the limbs of a group of young adults at a rave. Through this process of formal and ideological deconstruction, the artist comments on the failure of the original to achieve its aim to 'enlighten the masses'. The ‘unmaking’ of the sculpture breaks down the implicit function and meaning of Brown’s original, replicating and reanimating it simultaneously. Since the turn of the new millennia, Richard Hudson has built up an international reputation as one of the major artists working in sculpture today, being exhibited across Europe, Asia and America. Hudson’s work is featured in some of the biggest private collections in the world.

Hudson’s bronze Marilyn Monroe, his work being shown at Sculpture Al Fresco, uses Great Fosters as a backdrop to this eloquent, curvaceous, beautiful form. Many great artists have used Marilyn Monroe’s celebrity status as a source of inspiration before but none have produced work quite like Hudson’s distinctive abstract figurative style, focussing on the female nude figure, enlarged, truncated and simplified. When interviewed at the Tate’s The Human Figure in British Art from Moore to Gormley, Hudson described the importance of line within his work. “Line is the most important thing to me. The continuity of it. I want people to be able to look at a piece and follow a smooth, graceful line all the way around and back to the beginning again, without any break. I like sculpture that flows.” The success of Giles Kent’s work has been acknowledged through residencies and sculpture commissions for gardens and woodlands in many English counties and also in Sweden and the Czech Republic. Kent is widely considered to be the modern day David Nash, continuing to push the boundaries of working with wood as a sculptural material. He has made sculptures out of beech, sycamore, larch, lime, sallow, maple, oak, pine, cypress, Lebanese cedar, spruce, alder, yew and chestnut, preferring the directness of using the whole tree as a starting point. The beauty and precision of natural forms are qualities Kent’s sculptures strongly evoke. Kent has produced an untitled site-specific work for the summer exhibition at Great Fosters, using a ten foot oak trunk, carving it into a three-piece sculptural work and placing it in a natural setting – a wooded forest next to a lake – surprising the viewer, stopping him in his tracks and forcing him to engage with the ‘great outdoors’ in his own personal way. Rick Kirby is an internationally renowned sculptor completing residencies across Europe and receiving a vast number of public commissions across the entire country from Glasgow in the north to London, Kent and Suffolk in the south. Kirby’s mainly figurative work is made from small pieces of steel welded together or ‘pixels’ that give his work feeling and depth. His two pieces on show at Great Fosters are Soaring Figure, a magical female figure made of unusually shaped-pieces of shiny stainless steel welded together to amazing effect and arching her back toward the moat dating back to 500 AD behind her, and Figure Head, a patrician head made of mild steel and steel wire set on a steel plinth with a contemporary feel as you look through the spaces between the pixellated mild steel pieces and wire to the 50 acres of stunning gardens and parklands behind. Figure Head appears to be part of the landscape and a firm fixture at Great Fosters although only sited there in May. Richard Jackson has been working with cast glass for over two decades and has widely exhibited across the UK and Europe, being invited to exhibit at the British Glass Biennale 2010 and at the MAVA Museum in Madrid in 2008. One of Jackson's works at Great Fosters, Exchanged Glances III, is situated at the top of a spiralling grass jetty, catching the light, as it appears to be eloquently blowing in the wind. The prominent markmaking and carvings into this work appear bold and raw but have been done with thought, careful planning and attention to detail. Jackson’s style is unique in that he cuts into the essential shape of the cast glass, further sculpting its basic cast form. Richard talks about his carvings; “My carving is not chopping. You have to be incredibly controlled and gentle. You have to be on exactly the right plane emotionally and physically.” Richard Trupp has been a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors for over a decade and has received much recognition as a successful and promising artist, being awarded the Picker Fellowship and selected a finalist in the Jerwood Sculpture Prize. Trupp is exhibiting two large steel works at Great Fosters, FXBLK2000 (The Atomic Structure Of Humanity), two slabs of steel seemingly fixed together by cast iron bolts but with a void of space between the 6

two masses of steel, and The Juggernaut Of Nought, a wedge of steel buried into the earth as if aliens from outer space dropped this 400 kilogram mass from the sky onto the beach at the lake at Great Fosters. These sculptures are two very different pieces but achieving the same affect of manipulating a space or environment. For example, one need only look between the slabs of steel of the nuts and bolts piece - as if looking through a viewfinder of a camera - to find an idyllic island in the middle of a serene lake. Trupp talks about his work in an interview with Jotta. “With the nuts and bolts piece I am fixing space together and using sculpture as a mechanism to attach the space.” Trupp spent time working as Sir Antony Caro’s assistant gaining experience, guidance and inspiration for new works. For his wedge work on display, Trupp said, “I found a steel wedge in Caro’s sculpture workshop on the floor and I remember thinking ‘That’s so sculptural’. You use them all the time, for making things, propping things up. They are actually integral to the making of sculpture, so that’s where some of the inspiration came from.” Although Nikolai Winter, a Swiss artist, is the youngest sculptor exhibiting at Great Fosters, his work is equally developed and as professionally finished as any. Nikolai had his first exhibition in London earlier in 2011 and has had solo exhibitions in Berlin, Zurich and St Moritz. Nikolai’s work is inspired by his experiences when travelling and Asian cultures. He is fascinated with hands and the way they can be shown in various postures that embody a symbolic character. At Great Fosters, Nikolai is showing an Asian hand sculpture from his Abhaya series inspired by an ancient Tibetan mudra with a Volkswagen Sirocco green car paint finish. Nikolai produces work with a reflective or metallic finish, similar to Anish Kapoor’s work. Nikolai like Kapoor was born outside the UK but has now adopted the country as his own, where he continues to visit and exhibit. Emily Young is another Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors and is internationally renowned for her stone carving, creating large and complex pieces carved by hand, or when required fabricated with the aid of high technology. Emily has been described as “Britain's greatest living female stone sculptor” (Telegraph). Some of her permanent installations can be seen in St. Paul’s churchyard, Kew Gardens and Salisbury Cathedral. At Great Fosters, Emily is exhibiting two pieces, an onyx work entitled Arco Iris Head and a stone work entitled Purbeck Freestone Head. Emily describes her work as “a kind of temple activity now, devotional; when I work a piece of stone, the mineral occlusions of the past are revealed, the layers of sediment unpeeled; I may open in one knock something that took millions of years to form: dusts settling, water dripping, forces pushing, minerals growing - material and geological revelations: the story of time on Earth shows here, sometimes startling, always beautiful.”
Sculpture Al Fresco marks a significant departure for modern British sculpture and each of these exhibiting artists. A departure out from under the canvas of past teachings, honoured masters and old works and into a new dawn of contemporary British sculpture, where each of these artists will carve their own paths and take the responsibility of teaching and influencing the next generation of British sculptors. The exhibiting sculptors have taken influence from or even assisted British masters and now in their own right are starting to etch the future of contemporary British sculpture.

Richard Hudson's chosen subject matter here is very reflective of much of his work. Taking this iconic woman, whose voluptuousness is sublime in its purity, the simplicity of which Hudson has captured in his obsession for material perfection and for the spectator to engage in an erotic fantasy of endless smooth curves. This sculpture does not come into the category of "Please Do Not Touch". It is asking the viewer to engage in a tactile response, which Hudson believes sculpture is about.

Alex Hoda’s sculptures, as seen recently at the Saatchi Gallery’s Newspeak: British Art Now show, combine classical precedent with kitsch, throwaway materiality. Challenging the authority of the sculptor to pass comment upon, judge or change society, Hoda’s work breaks down the figuration of the original to imbue it with a new vitality and a less didactic (and more democratic) presence. Playing with sculptural precedents, for example Renaissance and nineteenth-century masters, Hoda’s sculpture remixes the canonical with the grotesque and the uncanny.

Richard Trupp is a protégée of Sir Anthony Caro. He spent a year under Caro’s tutelage before further honing his craft on the works of Jake and Dinos Chapman, Marc Quinn, Eduardo Paolozzi and Rebecca Warren. Trupp’s own art is grounded in a deep respect for the history of sculpture though he is anything but a traditionalist as his sharply crafted pieces and emotive titles demonstrate.

Rick Kirby has a prodigious body of work, with an impressive 90% of it being in the public domain. His work has been unveiled by the Queen, Princess Margaret, the Duke of Kent and, amongst other notables in politics and culture, the Nobel Laureate, Seamus Heaney. Rick’s sculptures remain in permanent display throughout the length and breadth of the country – from Glasgow in the north to London, Kent and Suffolk in the south. The advantage of this, he says, is that not only can thousands of people see them, but he himself can return to see them again and again. Each piece he creates carries a part of him and marks a particular period in his development as an artist.

Richard Jackson’s engagement with glass spans 25 years studying technique, sculpture, art and design, and working in glass studios in USA, Denmark and UK. A fleeting moment of recognition, passing then gone, is evoked in this piece.

Hands are a constant area of fascination for Nikolai. He is interested in their various postures and symbolic character, communicating their aura and expressiveness through his sculptures. Nikolai’s use of hand gesture imagery can be traced to his travels throughout Asia. The design of this hand is based on an ancient Tibetan Buddha hand modelled after the Abhaya mudra, a symbol of fearlessness and the displacement of anxiety. Nikolai’s work situates the beauty and aura of ancient cultures within the speed and flash of the contemporary rat race, drawing our attention to the distinctions between the two.

Carole’s work reflects her interest in the natural world. She expands the minutiae of plant and sea life to challenge and dominate the viewer on a human scale. Steel has what Kirby calls “a whoom-factor!” Rick’s sculptures are made of small pieces of steel welded together – he compares them to pixels. It enables him to give nuance and feeling even to large scale sculptures. He cites the architect Frank Gehry as being “the most influential artist” to have inspired him and Rick’s stunning work is now almost as recognisable in his own chosen field.
