Dodge Durango Citadel offers regal ride

• Driver’s Education: Driving Simulators & training programs [B6] • Classic Rides: 1953 Mercury Monterey [B5]

My first meeting with the 2011 Dodge Durango took place about a year ago. High on a hill overlooking the Infineon Raceway north of San Francisco, the JIM ROBINSON Durango was part of a Metroland Media test drive of the entire Carguide Dodge lineup for the Magazine coming year. At the end of the Durango line was the top trim level Citadel in glistening black on 20-inch chrome wheels looking imposing from any angle. It took a while but I finally got my hands on an identical Citadel in time for the Labour Day weekend. For my wife and I, it was a chance to return to our favourite haunt, the Blue Spruce Resort north of Huntsville. It is a place we used to go to before kids, during kids and now, for the first time, without kids again. Funny how things change. Ten years ago we would have needed all of the Durango’s full seven seating for everything from groceries to boogie boards to fishing poles. This time it was three bags, a cooler and two loads of food and beverages. Travel needs overkill no doubt but a regal ride at the same time The Citadel is the most expensive of the three Durango models starting at $49,995. The others are the base SXT starting at $37,995 and the middle range Crew Plus at $45,995. Durango is following the rest of the entire 2011 Chrysler line by opting for two engines, the 3.6-litre DOHC Pentastar V6 and the second generation

5.7-litre Hemi. A five-speed automatic is standard as is all-wheel-drive. The Durango shares a number of synergies with the Jeep Grand Cherokee including the same platform which is largely the same as used in the Mercedes-Benz ML SUV. A host of driver aids are also standard, such as Electronic Stability Control, Hill Assist, trailer sway damping, traction control with electronic rollover mitigation and active front headrests. While there is no doubt seven front linemen could travel in comfort, what the Durango does so well is provide amazingly large cargo and utility volumes. Behind the 50/50 third row folding seats is 0.49 cu m (17.2 cu ft). Drop the fold and tumble second row of seats and it becomes 2.39 cu m (84.5 cu ft). And if that is not enough, the front passenger seat also folds flat.

2011 Dodge Durango Continued from Pg. B3

Among the included features on the Citadel are SmartBeam HID headlights with auto levelling, eightway power front passenger seat, heated and ventilated front seats, power sunroof and a great GPS/ navigation/30 gig hard drive and voice recognition and Bluetooth streaming audio infotainment system. The latter sounds like rocket science stuff but it’s pretty intuitive. Also part of the Citadel trim level are two things you either love or hate. The first is Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path Detection. Not only does a yellow light go on in either mirror with a vehicle symbol when a car comes into the blind spot, but there is also an audible warning if you try to try to move back in the lane

again too soon. The rear cross path lets you know audibly if a vehicle is coming across your rear when backing up. This is especially good in high congestionhigh traffic areas of shopping centres. This I like.

I can’t say the same for the Adaptive Cruise Control. What it does is use radar to keep a preset distance between yourself and the car ahead. On a super highway, for instance, if you set it for a longer distance ahead,

it’s fine, until someone does a lane change between you and the guy in front which causes you to slow very quickly. I got caught out twice in heavy holiday weekend traffic. The good thing is you can turn this function off and use normal cruise control. FYI, Dodge assured me that if the system causes rapid deceleration, the brake lights go on so you don’t get rear-ended. And my wife liked this feature, because she thinks I occasionally tailgate. Full marks for the interior. As I have written before, one of greatest knocks against all things Chryco was the interiors. During the brand’s near collapse in 2008, the engineers and designers poured everything into cabin improvement. In the Citadel, you’ll find the highest-grade Nappa leather used

throughout with French stitching to heighten the appeal. To me there is no wonder that Maserati wants to base its full-size premium SUV, the Kubang, on the Durango/Jeep Grand Cherokee, including running it down the same production line in Michigan. There’s a heated steering wheel which my wife thought was the height of decadence, but I’ll bet she’d use it if she was driving the Durango to work every day in the winter. There’s a standard 11-volt AC outlet that I always find handy and even the second row seats are heated. The 3.6-litre V6 puts out 290 hp and 260 lb/ft of torque. It’s enough in most circumstances, but if I were doing a lot of towing, the Hemi would be the first thing on the order sheet with its 360 hp and 390 lb/ft of torque. My tester came with the 3.6-litre which, according to the Energuide, gets 13.0/8.9L/100 km (22/32 mpg) city/highway. The best I could do on the highway was 10.4L/100 km and that was on cruise about half the time. As mentioned, the starting price of the Citadel is $49,995. As tested, the total came to $52,270 which included a $1,400 shipping fee, the towing package at $675 and the $1,300 rear DVD entertainment centre I could happily live without. An econocar it ain’t but then again I don’t know of any compact cars or CUVs that tow more than three tons and seat seven full-sized adults.

No teenager anymore but enthusiast keeps driving her

1953 Mercury Monterey When the recent 15th annual Langley Good Times Cruisein welcomed approximately 1,600 special interest and classic vehicles on display, Jay Finlay ALYN EDWARDS was front and centre Classic with her 1953 Mercury RIDES Monterey. She had driven her classic convertible 2,500 kilometres from her Sun City West, Az home outside Phoenix, but then again, longdistance driving in her classy classic convertible with the top down is not a new experience. She has driven the convertible 500,000 kilometres since receiving it to mark her graduation from Miramonte High School in Moraga, Ca. At 16-years-old, Jay had just gotten her driver’s license and the beautiful Mercury convertible was a gift from her parents on Memorial Day, 1959. “I wanted a horse but my parents said no, they eat too much,” Jay Finlay recalls. “They said they would get me a car.” She wanted her parents’ blue and white 1954 Oldsmobile Starfire convertible which her father had purchased new and planned to sell. “It was only recently that I found out from my sister why I got the Mercury convertible instead of the Oldsmobile,” Finlay says. “Unknown to me, my sister had wanted the Starfire convertible the year before and ended up with a 1951 Oldsmobile hardtop. My parents didn’t want to show any favouritism.” In 1959, her father sold the five-year-old Starfire convertible for $400. Dick Merrill, a commercial artist who

owned a sign company, loved cars and made sure his family rode in style. Jay’s mother got a new car every two years including a pink 1956 Thunderbird. The love of cars was passed on from father to daughter. Every year, he and Jay would tour the dealerships to see the newest models. Convertibles were the favourite. They were ideal for the sunny California days and warm nights. Among Dick Merrill’s sign painting clients was Parker Robb Chevrolet in Walnut Creek. He bought a lot of cars there including a fully loaded red 1958 Chevrolet Impala convertible. When it came time to buy his younger daughter her grad car, an ad in the local newspaper drew him to the 1953 Mercury Monterey convertible. The car had been purchased by Walnut Creek realtor Jack Wolverton who picked the car up at a dealership beside the plant in Metuchen, New Jersey, where it was built on Jan. 20, 1953. The convertible was Tahiti Tan with a black top and black and red interior. He and his wife drove the new convertible back to California and, in the six years he had owned it, the Mercury had travelled less than 80,000 kilometres. It was equipped with factory fog lights, accessory steering wheel and fender skirts and Dick Merrill paid the original owner $700 for the graduation gift to his youngest daughter. “I loved the car but I hated the yucky colour,” Jay Finlay recalls. She paid $60 to have the car painted black the next year. The Mercury convertible went with her when the family moved to Oregon and it would be her only car over the next two decades from 1959 to

1979. She had her car repainted again in 1976 at a shop in Lebanon, Or. for $700. After marriage and the birth of her daughter, she would have other cars but kept her Mercury. “Just sentimental, I guess,” she says. “I have only had six cars in my life but I always thought my Mercury was the neatest thing.” She drives her car, which she affectionately calls Nellie, to an average of six major car shows a year. That has included visits to Keystone, Co., Coeur d’Alene, Id. and Bend, Or. She visited relatives in Vancouver while displaying her car at the Expo ‘86 Concours d’Elegance car show at BC Place Stadium. In 2003, she drove her car on a 7,000kilometre round pilgrimage to the centennial celebration of the founding of the Ford Motor Company which included a giant show in Dearborn, Michigan. It was at a 1983 show at the Anderson Fairgrounds near Redding, Ca. that her car caught the eye of famous rock ‘n’ roll DJ Wolfman Jack. “He asked the promoters who owned the Mercury convertible. When I finally got to meet him, he was a big heavy guy with a big hat sitting in the back of a limo and he

offered me $50,000,” she recalls. “My car was only worth about $10,000 at the time but I still said no thanks.” The car has been amazingly reliable over the half-million kilometres of travel. The only major trouble came after having the engine rebuilt before driving from Arizona to Tacoma, Wa. in 2007 to attend the Early Ford V8 Club’s Grand National Meet. “The car started running badly while traveling through California,” she says. “By the time I reached Tacoma, the car was barely running and the automatic transmission was leaking badly.” The mechanics failed to install the valve lifters correctly and added the wrong type of transmission fluid. After the show, the Mercury was trucked back to the shop in Arizona for repairs. Jay Finlay travels with a suitcase packed with parts: Generator, starter, points, condenser, water pump, belts, Continued on Pg. B7

Driving simulators and new driver training programs By Kate Wells DriveWise bc For many years it was thought that the best form of driver training came from classroom theory and then putting the theory into use by way of in-car driving lessons. The classroom theory would be a set amount of hours, usually 18 in B.C., and would be a “lecture” format. In the classroom an instructor would have approximately 25 students and would talk to them about winter driving, city driving, emergency maneuvers and more. Students would then hopefully remember the information when it came time to be in the car with their instructor. Students were usually bored and not

really paying full attention. However the problem with this way of teaching is students only retain approximately 10 per cent by way of a “lecture only” format. Simulator training has been around for many years. Airline pilots train many hours on simulators, as does the US Army and our own RCMP. The reason for this is you simply CAN’T teach lifethreatening situations in our regular environment. You CAN in a risk-free environment, such as a classroom facility with driving simulators! Now, getting back to learning how to drive, how do you teach driving in the snow in July? How to you teach a new driver what to do if a deer jumps out

at them, or what to do when their tire blows out while travelling on a freeway at 90 km/hour? How do you teach a new driver how to get out of a skid because they hit black ice on a busy road with other road users? Simple. Driving Simulators! One driving school in British Columbia is growing quite rapidly because of the use of driving simulators as an addition to the classroom theory training. Driving simulators are not meant to replace on-road driving lessons, but to enhance the classroom training sessions and make it a much more “learner friendly” environment. DriveWise Canada does just that. Instead of a traditional “lecture only” style of

classroom training, they have added driving simulators in every classroom. Each DriveWise student learns driving skills in three ways: In class, on the driving simulator, and in the car. The retention level jumps from 10 per cent of only “hearing information” to an astonishing 90 per cent because they are “doing” what they learned on a driving simulator. The driving simulator’s graphics are extremely realistic, helping each student learn the dangers of driving while impaired, texting while driving and all emergency maneuvers. Students love it and bottom line, they are retaining the information they are learning.

Adam A. Orser, owner of The Rootcellar Village Green Grocer, and “Wally,” a 1919 Ford Model T and the newest member of the Rootcellar team.

Named for his previous home of Walla Walla, Wa. 92-year-old Wally, a 1919 Ford Model T, is up for the task of presenting shoppers with the freshest fruits and vegetables. Brought to Victoria by Rootcellar owner Adam Orser, “I did the whole thing as a surprise to everyone at the Rootcellar and family. The trip was long and the set up was stressful – but it was worth it,” he says. Setting out for Walla Walla, Wa. at 5 a.m. on a Sunday, Orser returned with Wally to the Rootcellar at 3:30 p.m. the next day. Today Wally sits in the centre of the store, a unique vehicle to house the market’s fresh offerings. “Folks love it,” Orser says. “We are getting constant inquiries and comments about it. Children think it’s real neat, and ... I think the older folks like the nostalgia of it; it brings back memories for them.”

I just like to drive it.”

The all-new 2012 Chevy Sonic, which has two more air bags than its subcompact competitors, is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick. The Sonic achieved “good” scores in all four types of tests performed, including frontal offset and side impact. It also has standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control, which the institute requires of all vehicles receiving a Top Safety Pick designation. The IIHS tests vehicles to determine how well they protect occupants in front and side crash tests, in rollovers via a roof strength test, and in simulated rear impacts to evaluate seat and head

restraints for protection against neck injuries. Sensors that control the deployment of 10 standard airbags are mounted into Sonic’s structure. The sensing and diagnostic module receives data from the car’s sensors and establishes the severity of the impact and whether to deploy the airbags. The additional driver and passenger knee airbags can help reduce injury to lower extremities. Another standard feature is Sonic’s hillhold technology, which makes navigating hilly terrain with a manual as effortless as with an automatic. It’s a luxury-level feature that helps drivers maintain braking control on hills.

Yamaha Stryker a middleweight factory-custom cruiser There are always a few bikes that stand out from every year’s release of new models. And, more often than not, the standouts are built by Yamaha. A few years ago, one ROB BEINTEMA of the prime examples Metroland was the Raider, a Media Carguide heavyweight factoryMagazine custom cruiser that raised eyebrows and expectations with its radical-for-aJapanese-bike styling statement. And for 2011, Yamaha unveiled a little brother to the Raider, the allnew Stryker, a smaller but still potent middleweight model, harnessing the V-Star’s 1304 cc V-Twin engine and following roughly the same factory custom formula – chopped fenders, stretched out front forks, big wheels and fat rear rubber. “A minimalist design with aggressive attitude” as Yamaha put it, and the Stryker seems a natural follow-up to the Raider, as well as a competitive response to the Honda Fury and Sabre siblings in the same weight class. The Stryker comes decked out in a choice of different colours and flavours but it looks particularly striking in a dark nightfighter kit with just a few chrome highlights here and there to contrast the blacked-out engine and bodywork. Man, I was psyched up for this bike. I had my black jacket, black jeans, black helmet. I was gonna look ba-a-ad.

And, as usual, I had guessed wrong. I showed up at Yamaha Canada to find a brilliant blue model that somehow looked disturbingly cheerful as it sat waiting for me in the parking lot. But you gotta take what you can get. And it’s easy to learn to love the silky sheen of the Vivid Purplish Blue version. The paint and graphics combination has the colour depth and quality of a fine custom paint job. I swung a leg over the bike, or maybe I should say “into the bike” because, at 670 mm (26.4”), the seat position is the lowest in Yamaha’s lineup. Which is probably why the brochure makes a point of including photos of female riders mounted on the Stryker. Yamaha hopes that women will make up a good chunk of the Stryker’s market niche. But there is no fear of girly-bike softness in the Stryker’s style. With its chopper-inspired looks, laid back layout and “fists in the wind” seating position, the Stryker has enough broad appeal for either sex. The engine erupts with a lovely growl snarling through the dual slash-cut pipes. Although the power of a bigger bike like the Raider might be thrilling, frankly, the whole “who’s got the biggest displacement?” power competition is getting kind of old, and the Stryker’s 1304 cc V-Twin pumps out more than enough oomph to satisfy most riders. Deduct the 38 kg (84 lb) weight saving of the Stryker’s middleweight mass (compared to the bigger Raider), and you also have a cruiser that feels more maneuverable and manageable,

The 2011 Stryker, one of the latest additions to Yamaha’s Star lineup, is the company’s take on a middleweight, factory-custom cruiser.

despite its stretched-out chopper-like proportions. Yes, you do still have to tip it into the corners aggressively but Yamaha engineers made a point of not sacrificing handling for styling, combining a 6 degree yoke offset angle combined with a 34 degree steering head for an easier-steering fork angle of 40 degrees. The one-piece seat is comfortable enough for not-too-long trips and, once you get the knack, it clips on and off easily for access to the helmet hooks. A simple, retro-styled analogue speedo sits high atop the handlebars, in-yerface with digital readouts for the odo, dual tripmeters, fuel reserve tripmeter,

fuel gauge, clock and assorted warning lights. There’s no tach, so it’s shift-bysound only. The fifth gear is tall enough at highway velocity to negate the need for a six speed. And I would advise late shifts because this engine does not like to be lugged, the motor and belt drive lurching at low revs with the kind of driveline lash immediacy you’d expect more from a shaft drive system. The official fuel economy lab rating for the Stryker is 5.9L/100km. My real world averages, spread over four tanks of gas, were closer to 6.5L/100km. The fuel warning light usually comes on at around 180 km and, based on those averages, the 15-litre tank gave me a range of about 230 km.

Toyota has unveiled the Prius Plug-in Hybrid that takes just 3 hours to charge using a normal 120-volt household outlet.

Toyota introduced the Prius Plug-in Hybrid at the annual Green Drive Expo as the newest member of the Prius family. Joining the popular third-generation Prius Liftback and the new Prius v, the new Prius Plug-in combines the benefits of the standard Prius model’s hybrid vehicle operation with extended electric vehicle (EV) driving and more affordable pricing than pure electric or

The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid will allow true EV operation and performance for up to 15 miles at speeds up to 100 km/h. Brackerton announces Nav-Mat III GPS dashboard mounting solution Bracketron, a leader in mounting solutions and accessories for mobile consumer electronics, has announced the Nav-Mat III, a universal dashboard mount that securely holds GPS devices in a safe and convenient position without using sticky adhesives. The latest introduction in the popular Nav-Mat series of in-vehicle dash mounts, the Nav-Mat III features a skid-free rubberized coating and a weighted base that contours to uneven or textured dashboards. The Nav-Mat III works with the windshield mount sold with popular GPS models and secures your device for easy access and viewing while you’re on the road. The Nav-Mat III is now available for $29.95 at Bracketron.com and Best Buy. “The Nav-Mat III has a unique weighted base that doesn’t require the sticky adhesive found in traditional dashboard mounts,” says Mark Mandel, Executive Vice-President of Bracketron. “The mount’s innovative design means that you can easily transport it between vehicles without

the worry of leaving a residue that may damage your dashboard. Additionally, the Nav-Mat III is incredibly versatile and can be used with all standard GPS windshield suction mounts.” The Nav-Mat III combines sleek design with dash mounting convenience, making interaction with your GPS easier than ever. The NavMat III’s weighted base molds to the vehicle’s dashboard seamlessly and provides a sturdy, secure mounting platform. The dashboard mount provides easier access to your GPS than windshield mounts and keeps your windshield clear for better visibility. Along with these safe driving benefits, the Nav-Mat III does not use any adhesive and can be easily switched from one vehicle to another unlike traditional dashboard mounts. The mount’s matte black finish complements the vehicle’s interior and its small footprint means it can also fit neatly in your built-in dash storage tray.
