Readers Guide October December

Shop locally at Out of Hand For many Greater Victorians, purchasing “local” is more than a trend, it’s a lifestyle. Helping in that endeavour is the 2011 Out Of Hand Artisan Fair, Friday, Nov. 25 to Sunday, Nov. 27 at the beautiful Crystal Gardens. The longest running professional show on the Island, Out of Hand presents the latest trends in art, food and fashion. For Out of Hand producer Ramona Froehle Schacht, the shift to choosing locally produced products is more than food for thought. “This year at the Out of Hand Artisan Fair, we have out biggest ever artisan food section. People want to trust where their food comes from and know who produced it. In addition to over 100 booths featuring jewellery, luxurious body products, clay, glass, hats and designer fashion creations, the

2011 Fair features a wonderful range of delicacies that will become part of special meals and holiday celebrations.” Unique apparel is a hallmark of Out

of Hand. “B.C. is home to some fabulous designers that are cutting-edge for stylish, sustainable and one-of-a-kind clothing,” she says. “It feels good when someone asks, ‘Where did you get that?’ And you tell them it’s local.” From 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25 enjoy Fashion In Action: A Girl’s Night Out, a modern mix of cocktails, fashion shows and a DJ mixing tunes for a fun night out. Check the website for details. New this year is the Sunday morning coffee lounge. Enjoy coffee, tea and delicacies from the Fairmont Empress along with music. Learn more about vendors on the website and follow on Twitter at outofhandfair for the latest news on what’s hot and new. For more details visit online at www.outofhand.ca or call 250737-1788.

Talented exhibitors showcase at Creative Craft Fairs Celebrating its 34th year, Creative Craft Fairs remains one of Vancouver Island’s finest fairs, attracting thousands looking for exciting handmade and imported gifts for the holiday season. At Pearkes Rec Centre, behind Tillicum Mall, Nov. 11 to 13, the fair offers an excellent opportunity to get a jump on holiday shopping, notes co-ordinator Deanna Walter, welcoming both new and returning exhibitors. Enjoy self-taught jewellery designer and photographer

Corinne Marley’s colourful eye-catching pendants and refreshing, real photography. Earthlimits is a small family-owned company printing eco-friendly restored reproductions of vintage rock & roll event posters on hemp, organic cotton or recycled cotton, creating banners, bags, t-shirts and flags. At Style Me Modern, two sassy moms are currently handmaking hair clip holders, hair clips, pillow covers and face cloths. Rogerio Graca returns with

his one-of-a-kind jewellery while Edweena Duguay, of Royal Victoria Crafts, brings her beautiful Christmas crafts including ornaments, Santa Claus dolls, candles, stockings and jewellery. New to this year’s fair is Bubbies Boutique, home of the original Bubbie, the ultimate security baby blanket of comfy soft fabrics and silky, soothing satin edges.
