B.C. Day August 1

Promotional Feature

Happy B.C. Day! Celebrate the best of B.C. this holiday weekend Jennifer Blyth Black Press From Nelly Furtado to Steve Nash, Rick Hansen to Emily Carr and too many politicians and business leaders to count, B.C. has produced more than its share of movers and shakers. With its inspiring history and breathtaking natural environment, is it really any wonder? And we’re fortunate here in Victoria to live among these provincial highlights every day. The capital is home to both a rich First Nations culture and a legacy built by the pioneers who arrived later to craft a new life in B.C.’s woods, and with its farms, forts, rivers and oceans – a diverse, fascinating history reflected in the region’s museums, art galleries and historic sites. In fact, the Royal BC Museum has even compiled a special BC Day Scavenger Hunt, perfect for testing your knowledge and learning a little more about the province’s history – see the next page for more details. For those in a celebratory mood this weekend, local performers are happy to oblige. Symphony Splash will fill the Inner Harbour with music and fireworks Sunday, while the Victoria Electronic Music Festival will have fans dancing in Centennial Square both Saturday and Sunday. The music continues Monday with B.C. Day celebrations on the grounds of St. Ann’s Academy. So, what are you doing this B.C. Day weekend? It’s time to celebrate!

Why B.C. Day? According to the province, the British Columbia Day Act was introduced in 1974 by the Hon. Ernie Hall, provincial secretary under Premier Dave Barrett, “to recognize the pioneers of British Columbia by declaring the first Monday of August in each year to be a public holiday known as British Columbia Day.”

• Salsa Caliente will perform, in addition to offering workshops in salsa for adults and hip-hop for kids! • Live music by B.C. musicians, including Karly Summers and Sarah Tradewell, throughout the day. A highlight for up-an-coming musicians will be “Garage Band Live,” a competition offering the opportunity to come out of the garage and onto the stage – plus the chance to win a 2011 BC Emerging Artist Award for best local garage band or solo performer! To participate, sign up at www.capitalfestival.com

In addition to the BC Day holiday, this weekend also brings another summer favourite, Symphony Splash, Sunday, July 31. Led by Maestra Tania Miller and the Victoria Symphony, playing from a barge in the Inner Harbour, this year’s concert features young soloist Alice Haekyo Lee, along with The Timebenders, Canadian Scottish Regiment Pipe and Drum Band, Music Corner Ensemble and Beacon Hill Brass. The varied program includes both classical and modern selections, plus the finale favourite, Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, followed by fireworks. The Victoria Symphony played its firstever Symphony Splash in 1990 to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Thousands of people showed up at the Inner Harbour to watch the orchestra play on a barge moored off-shore. Today one of the largest annual symphony events in North America, Splash attracts up to 40,000 music fans to the Inner Harbour.
