Parade triggers passion for classic cars David Rogers had no idea in 1951, as a one-year-old, that when his father’s friend Jimmy Pattison sold their family a brand new 1952 Pontiac sedan, BENJAMIN YONG he would one day be NEWS STAFF taking that same car to shows all over the country. “He drove that car until 1966 when my mother cracked it up. He gave me the ’52 – I had just turned 16 – and he bought a 1965 Pontiac,” Rogers recalls. Growing up in Vancouver, his father ran an insurance business in the 1950s and ‘60s and frequently worked with Pattison when he was still primarily in the car dealership business. “Those days, Jimmy Pattison had a dirt lot on Broadway and Cambie,” he reminisces. Today Rogers owns eight vintage cars, ranging from a suped-up 1971 Chevy Nova muscle car to a 1914 Cartercar – a classic American vehicle resembling a motorized carriage, first manufactured in 1905 – acquired from the Harrah’s museum in Las Vegas. But he wasn’t always into cars – until he attended one particular event. “(It was) Easter in 1960. I was standing at a street corner at 18th and Cambie watching the vintage car parade. The first (car) drove down through the tram tracks down Cambie Street.”

The Audi A7 Sportback has been named the 2012 Best of the Best Winner by the Canadian Automotive Jury.

The 2012 Audi A7 Sportback named Best of the Best Winner Metroland Media Carguide Magazine

JA SA N LE U E A N RY D 31 S ST

A jury of 10 senior Canadian automotive journalists has selected the new Audi A7 Sportback as the Canadian Automotive Jury’s 2012 Best of the Best Winner. Announced at the Montreal Auto Show, the Audi A7 was chosen from this year’s dozen Best of the Best Finalists — including the BMW 1 Series, Chevrolet Cruze and Volt, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Infiniti M, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, Kia Optima, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Mini Cooper Countryman, the 2011 Best of the Best winning Ford Fiesta. In a tightly contested voting session, the Kia Optima was this year’s first runner-up. In choosing the A7 as this year’s winner, the Jury cited its “gorgeous” styling, while inside, the A7 is equally attractive. As per the A6 sedan it’s based upon, the A7 is jammed with Audi’s excellent Quattro all-wheel-drive system and the latest in in-car hi-tech. Yet despite its practical aspirations, the A7 is quiet on the road when

required, but can act like a sports sedan when its 310 hp, supercharged 3.0-litre V6 is called upon, while an even spicier 420 hp V8 version, dubbed S7, is coming later this year. The Canadian Automotive Jury’s annual Best of the Best Awards are unique in Canada. Its 10 jurors account for the vast majority of automotive industry coverage in Canada. And the jury’s selections don’t exclusively focus on a specific model within a family of vehicles or only “all-new” models. To qualify for the Best of the Best Awards, vehicles must have been on sale in Canadian showrooms by Oct. 1, 2011. From this group, jurors chose 11 finalists. The reigning champion, the Ford Fiesta, was automatically included as a finalist for 2012. The Canadian Automotive Jury is a not-for-profit group of prominent Canadian automotive journalists, pledged to the highest standards of uncompromised reporting. The Jury has a coast-to-coast reach in all forms of media including newspapers, radio, television and online.

Ask for Bell Acidic Stomach/Alkaline Balance #39. It’s inexpensive, has no side effects and may eliminate the need for anti-acid pills many people take. As a bonus, an alkaline balanced body prevents many illnesses. See guarantee printed on box.

Chevrolet has announced the 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition – the fastest, most capable convertible in Corvette’s history – as well as a 60th Anniversary Package that will be available on all 2013 Corvette models. The Corvette 427 Convertible blends elements of the Z06 and ZR1 models to create the fastest and most-capable convertible in Corvette’s history. Its heart is the 427-cubic-inch (7.0-litre) LS7 engine from the Corvette Z06. Rated at 505 hp and 470 lb/ft of torque, it is the most powerful engine ever installed in a production Corvette convertible – and, like the Z06, the 427 Convertible is only available with a six-speed manual transmission. The LS7 was co-developed with the Corvette Le Mans-winning GT1 engine and features lightweight titanium connecting rods and intake valves, as well as racing-inspired high-flow cylinder heads and a drysump oiling system. It is assembled by hand at GM’s Performance Build Centre, where customers who purchase the 427 Convertible Collector Edition can purchase the Corvette Build Experience option and assemble the engine that will power their new car. The combination of low mass and high output will make the 427 Convertible one of the fastest convertibles in the world, delivering estimated 0-100 mph performance of 3.8 seconds, quarter-mile performance of 11.8 seconds, lateral acceleration of 1.04 g and a top speed of more than 305 km/h. The 427 Convertible is available in 2LT, 3LT and 4LT trim levels and will carry a unique vehicle identification number sequence, similar to the Corvette ZR1.

Chevrolet’s sub-compact Sonic has earned a U.S. five-star overall vehicle score for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, when equipped with the optional “Peace of Mind package, received a five-star overall vehicle score for safety from the U. S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Peace of Mind package includes driver and passenger knee airbags, secondrow side-impact seat-mounted airbags, tire pressure monitor system, and front seatbelt lap pretensioners. The vehicle was tested under NHTSA’s revised New Car Assessment Program implemented

starting with the 2011 model year. The Sonic brings to 10 the number of General Motors 2012 models with five-star overall vehicle scores for safety. The overall rating is based on frontal and side crash tests in addition to rollover resistance testing. The three test conditions are combined mathematically into an “Overall Vehicle Score. The Sonic when equipped with the optional Peace of Mind package achieved an overall vehicle score of five stars – the highest rating possible – even though Sonic received four stars for rollover. NHTSA applies the results for the Sonic sedan to the five-door hatchback model because of the same safety equipment and performance.

Nissan launches world’s first self-healing iPhone case Metroland Media Carguide Magazine

Nissan has announced the latest piece of must-have kit for the iPhone – a groundbreaking self-healing iPhone case. The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case features the brand’s pioneering self-healing paint finish, a world first in paint technology developed in 2005. Now this technology has been applied to a product that’s prone to scratches through everyday use – the smartphone – with Nissan’s new Scratch Shield case meaning iPhone-lovers can keep their phone looking at its best for longer. The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case has been designed using several automotive engineering innovations to deliver a more durable and long-lasting paint coat, and closely fitting, tight case. The case has three key benefits: the highly

flexible and elastic properties of Scratch Shield paint technology allows fine scratches to quickly mend themselves; its tactile gel-like rather than glossy surface is more scratch-resistant than conventional paint and provides a better grip; and the case itself is made of ABS plastic – a high grade substance widely used in the automotive industry which is more rigid and robust than other plastics. The outer ‘paint’ is made from polyrotaxane, which means that when damage occurs to the coating in the form of a fine scratch, the chemical structure is able to react to change back to its original shape and fill the gap – ‘healing’ the blemish. Nissan has produced an initial batch of prototypes of the innovative Scratch Shield iPhone cases for BETA testing with selected journalists and customers, but if demand proves strong, it will look to put the cases on general sale later this year.

Spring into cool break activities By Jennifer Blyth

Spring break doesn’t have to mean a break from learning. Here are some great ideas from some of Victoria’s favourite places... Head to the Royal BC Museum for Spring Break activities for the family, including super crafts and family tours March 17 to 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Finish Spring Break March 25 with the museum’s Wonder Sunday – Sea Lions, Cougars and Bears – Oh My! What makes an animal dangerous, cute or icky? Stretch your body and your imagination – alongside your kids – as your family discovers the museum’s favourite animals, from 1 to 3 p.m. And of course, the amazing 2011 Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition continues to April 9. The Maritime Museum of B.C. makes a splash over Spring Break with Adventures at Sea March 12 to 25 with special activities happening every day including guided tours, pirate school, and behind-the-scenes fun. Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary has crafted a week of afternoon activities for Spring Break. From noon to 3 p.m. March 19 to 22, drop-in programs of games, crafts, songs and handson activities explore Birds of a Feather, Marsh Madness, Ssssss-Snakes and Plants and Pollinators – a different theme every day. Admission is by donation. Wrap up with the always fun Fossil Fair March 24 and 25, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when paleontologists will share their personal fossil discoveries, including many from this past year. Bring your family and your own fossils for identification. Kids can follow a scavenger hunt, make fossil and dinosaur rubbings, dig for fossils in a sandbox and take a fossil home as a treasure. Admissions by donation.

Exploring the City of Gardens By Jennifer Blyth

From the world-famous Butchart Gardens to an elegant city space designed by royalty, the City of Gardens holds no shortage of possibilities for the garden enthusiast! Abkhazi Garden is an oasis in the heart of the city, the 1946 creation of Prince and Princess Abkhazi featuring an amazing mix of oaks, maples, rhododendrons and more. In nearby Rockland, the 36 acres of Government House Gardens feature 14 acres of gorgeous mixed beds, massive

rhododendrons, an elegant rose garden, herb garden and more, maintained by the Friends of Government House and open daily from dawn to dusk. Victoria’s “garden for gardeners,” the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific (Glendale Gardens) offers specialty and demonstration areas, including a native plant wildflower garden, rhododendron and hosta garden, hardy fuschia garden, and Takata Japanese Garden. Head inside for Victoria Butterfly Gardens, whose lush, tropical gardens provide the ideal backdrop for thousands of free-flying butterflies.

The Butchart Gardens National Historic Site boasts 20 hectares of breathtaking gardens. While the property is beautiful year-round, through the winter, be sure to visit what is the Blue Poppy Restaurant the rest of the year – until March 31 it’s transformed into a spectacular vision of flowering bulbs and shrubs for Spring Prelude. In the West Shore, Hatley Park National Historic Site is home both to Hatley Castle and Royal Roads University, along with beautiful Italian, rose and Japanese gardens.

Great ideas for the great outdoors Here on the West Coast, we’re fortunate to have many opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. FMI: www.canwestproductions.com • Victoria Harbour Floating Boat Show in the Inner Harbour, April 19 to 22. As we turn the corner on winter and look forward to spring’s renewal, there’s no better time to try your hand at something new – no matter what your age. Perhaps the martial arts have always intrigued you or this year’s magical production of the Nutcracker has your kids’ hearts set on ballet. A new season of baseball is just around the corner or maybe spring’s blossoms have you inspired to try your hand at painting. A scan of local recreation guides offers an

idea of some of the new and notable programs available, ranging from free swims and skates to the latest fitness trends and innovations — Total Body Renewal at the Downtown Y anyone? Water sports are popular, with programs for newcomers to more experienced paddlers, or spend some time being busy with your furry friend with Fun Nosework, Tricks and Games or Non-Competitive Agility for Dogs, both from Saanich Recreation. With the wealth of opportunities out there, the only trouble is in choosing!
