Canada was at war when strategic material rationing started to really impact the automobile industry in 1942. The 1942 model year saw a 44 per cent drop ALYN EDWARDS in civilian automobile Classic production. Shortages RIDES of strategic material including chromium, copper, aluminum and rubber took their toll. A priority list for 1942 was created by a Federal Government agency known as the Motor Vehicle Controller, which decided who could buy a car from the pool of new cars – only about 4,000 vehicles. The controlled price was kept at 1941 levels. Priority was given to people involved with “essential pursuits,” such as food, clothing, shelter and medical. Roy S. Hawes, who operated Hawes Auto Service in Edmonton, was determined to get a new car, so he asked his family doctor to order it for him. The 1942 Plymouth Super Deluxe D23C sedan would turn out to be a highly unusual and rare automobile. It would also be the first and last new car Roy Hawes would ever own. The last of the cars produced in 1942 were known as “Blackout” models with the reduction or elimination of use of strategic materials, chrome being the most visible difference. handles, trunk handles, headlight rims and various other trim parts were made from less strategic metal than chrome. To keep a uniform appearance, all trim was painted whether it was chrome or pot metal. Roy Hawes’ 1942 blackout Dodge Special Deluxe was identical to the Plymouth with the exception of the

grille and name badges. These Dodgebadged cars were sold in Canada along with the larger American built Dodge Custom D-22. The D-23s gave Canadian Dodge dealers a lower-priced model. Continued on Pg. B2

The bombing of U.S. naval ships at Pearl Harbor in December 1941 drew the Americans into the war and civilian automobile production came to a halt south of the border, making way for military vehicle production. Several months later, the same thing happened to Canadian automobile production, which halted in February 1942. A myth that the chrome was painted so it would not be reflective is not true of the civilian cars although cars produced for the military may have had this done. Blackout and military vehicles are often confused. Roy Hawes used his 1942 Dodge mainly on Sundays and holidays as he drove a pickup truck to and from his service garage. The Dodge was stored

under cover and kept in immaculate condition right up to Roy’s death in 1963. At that time, the Dodge had travelled only 68,000 miles. In 1973, his two sons and grandson Jim Hawes towed the car to Kelowna where the family had relocated. In 1976, the car was given to a cousin named Roy after the original owner. The car was moved to North Vancouver where it was stored under a tarp for 10 years and then sold. The old Dodge disappeared from the Hawes family history for the next two decades until Jim Hawes, Roy’s grandson, decided to try to locate it. Jim traced the car to another owner in North Vancouver. To his dismay, he learned that the owner had passed away. Repeated telephone messages that he wanted to buy his grandfather’s car were ignored. He eventually slipped a business card through the widow’s mail slot and suspected his grandpa’s original

Dodge was still in her garage. He heard nothing back and became convinced the car had disappeared from the family forever. Then four years ago, he received a call from a man in Chilliwack who said he had purchased the Dodge in North Vancouver and Jim’s business card was inside. Jim went to Chilliwack to take photos of the car and mistakenly left his camera case behind. He telephoned the owner and said he would pick the case during the summer while visiting the family cottage at Cultus Lake. On July 13, Jim’s birthday, he called the car’s owner to set up a time to retrieve his camera case. He then learned the owner had passed away the previous week. The widow and her sons had been trying to find Jim and would now sell him the car. “I went out that day and agreed on a selling price,” Jim Hawes recalls. His next challenge was convincing his

wife. “Then I bought the car since it was my birthday.” The restoration of the badly rusted but rare “blackout” Dodge began in September, 2009 and was completed this year. It was an enormous job with a lot of help from friends and associates. It took a full year for Langley craftsman Tom Woods to weld new metal back into the car and do the body work. Gary Marshall painted the car in its original Royal Blue colour. A decision was made to chrome all the parts that had originally been “blacked out” with drab gray paint. Fellow Chrysler club member Keith Whitter, who lives just two blocks away from Jim Hawes’ North Burnaby home, rebuilt the mechanics and re-assembled the car. The results are over the top for a 1940s sedan. The 1942 Dodge Super Deluxe is in better-than-new condition right down to its beautiful wood grained dashboard and original spotlight. The restoration of his grandfather’s original car has made Jim Hawes very happy. “Somehow, I think Grandpa wanted me to have this car,” he says with a smile. Stronger roofs lead to another record year for the annual award The list of winners of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick award is longer than ever this year, with vehicles in nearly every size category the Institute evaluates earning accolades. From minicars to sedans to pickups, consumers have a record number of choices among 2012 models. In all, 69 cars, 38 SUVs, five minivans, and three pickups have earned Top Safety Pick. The award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover, and rear crashes based on ratings in Institute evaluations. The ratings, which cover all four of the most common kinds of crashes, help shoppers pick vehicles that offer the highest levels of crash protection. The winners’ circle includes 18 new recipients for 2012, while 97 models that previously qualified for the 2011 award carry over to 2012. “For the second year running a record number of models qualify,” says Institute president Adrian Lund. “It’s tough to win, and we commend auto manufacturers for making safety a top priority.” That commitment to protecting people in crashes is evident in the fast pace of design improvements automakers have made during the past year. last year’s award as less-than-perfect rollover ratings held back many contenders. Later the number climbed to 100 as manufacturers redesigned roofs to make them stronger or introduced new models to win. Every major automaker has at least one winner but Subaru remains the only manufacturer with the distinction of earning awards for every model it builds. Toyota/Lexus/Scion has 15 winners for 2012, more than any other auto manufacturer. General Motors is next in line with 14, followed by Volkswagen/ Audi with 13, and Ford/Lincoln and Honda/Acura with 12 awards apiece. Ten of the 18 new additions are Honda/Acura models, including the midsize Accord sedan, which hasn’t earned Top Safety Pick since the Institute toughened criteria to win the 2010 award by adding a test to assess roof strength in a rollover crash. Vehicles rated good for rollover protection have roofs more than twice as strong as the current federal standard requires. The Institute estimates that such roofs reduce the risk of serious and fatal injury in single-vehicle rollovers by about 50 per cent compared with roofs meeting the minimum requirement. A new federal standard for roof strength will phase in beginning

with 2013 models. Roofs on the 2009 Honda CR-V and 2010 Pilot scored marginal ratings in prior Institute tests, while earlier models of the Accord, CR-Z, Fit, and Insight rated acceptable. Now all of these 2012 models earn good ratings and Top Safety Pick. “Honda/Acura deserves credit for most-improved status,” Lund says. “The automaker buckled down and upgraded roofs on 10 models that missed winning last year because of rollover protection. Now, the automaker has winners in the minicar, small car, midsize car, small SUV, midsize SUV, minivan, and large pickup categories.” With fuel efficiency and reduced emissions on many buyers’ wish lists, the winners’ circle includes more green choices. Toyota’s all-new Prius v is among them. Roomier than the original, the v hybrid brings to 15 the number of winners available as hybrids. The plugin electric Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf, winners in 2011, also earn this year’s award. For drivers who need to haul loads, the Ford F-150, Honda Ridgeline and Toyota Tundra are good choices in the large pickup category. Small pickups continue to be shut out. None the Institute has evaluated qualify for the award.

Can you be seen? Lighting the way to safe driving By Kate Wells, DriveWise BC When I was 16 and learning to drive, I was taught to turn on my lights during the day, and not just at night. And to this day, I still do. Even though every vehicle I have owned has come with daytime running lights, I still turn on my low beam headlights. It’s become as automatic as turning on my car. Why turn on your headlights when your car comes equipped with daytime running lights? Simple. When you turn on your headlights, not only is the light brighter,

but you are also illuminating your vehicle’s tail lights. This makes you even more visible from both the front and the back. Daytime running lights are a dimmer version of your headlights and fail to light up the tail lights. One of the biggest defensive driving techniques is simply to be seen on the road. Using the headlights and taillights will make it easier for other drivers to judge your speed and your distance. Plus, depending on the colour of your vehicle, visibility can also be difficult. Many silver, grey, blue or even black cars are less visible than, say, a

bright red vehicle. In this picture you can see the van coming toward the camera does not have headlights on. The vehicle behind it does and is much more visible. The car in front of the camera does not have headlights on either, as you can tell by the tail lights, however the white van in front of the car, does. The tail lights are also much more noticeable. • You must use your headlights from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise or if visibility is reduced to less than 150 metres. • High beams must be dimmed if a vehicle is within 150 metres of you so

you don’t blind the other driver. • In fog, use low beam headlights or fog lamps, not high beams. A challenge to all drivers: TURN ON YOUR LIGHTS at all times during the day so we can all BE SEEN.

Waking up bright and early to remove ice from a windshield is a pain, plain and simple. And unfortunately, too many impatient drivers have discovered creative ways to break the glass instead of removing the ice. Here are eight DOs and DON’Ts for de-icing your windshield:

DO: Pour cold water to gradually melt the ice on a “sealed” or frozen door. DON’T: Pour hot water on the vehicle’s windshield and windows to melt the ice. The extreme temperature change can cause the glass to break. DO: Start the vehicle and use the defroster setting to warm the glass. Wait at least five minutes. DON’T: Try to “unseal” the door by

using a hair dryer, cigarette lighter, ice pick, screwdriver, propane torch or portable heater. DO: Use a plastic ice scraper and a soft plastic bristle brush or broom to clear the ice once it starts melting. DON’T: Scrape ice off the windshield with a metal ice scraper, key, spatula, knife or crowbar. DO: Make sure no ice or snow is obstructing the vehicle’s tailpipe. If it is covered, remove the ice or snow to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. DON’T: Pour a mixture of vinegar and water on the windshield. Vinegar eats pits into the glass. Waiting for ice to melt on its own isn’t practical in the morning, so knowing how to properly defrost auto glass is important. By waking up a few minutes early, drivers can avoid accidents caused by de-icing windshields.

Do use a plastic scraper to remove snow and ice from your windshield. DO NOT use metal tools or hot water, which can damage the glass.
