900hp Harley + 222.99 mph: There’s no thrill like it For Damian Cownden, the thrill of scary-for-most activities like skydiving and bungee jumping simply didn’t provide enough of a rush. Then, he discovered the sport of BENJAMIN YONG NEWS STAFF motorcycle drag racing. Cownden, a native Victorian, now pilots a 900-horsepower Harley-Davidson race bike and is the head of his own team, Damian Cownden Racing. “I’ve never felt the adrenaline rush like this — not even jumping out of planes or anything like that. This is just crazy, there’s nothing like it and I love it.� This is not like watching a couple of crotch rockets bombing down the 1/8 mile strip at Western Speedway, although he was a regular at the local track earlier in his career. In the last few years, he has raced exclusively in the internally recognized Top Fuel division, the fastest class for race cars and bikes powered by a substance called nitromethane. Continued on Pg. “It’s commonly confused with nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide (when mixed with gasoline) will give you about 20 per cent more horsepower,” Cownden says. “Nitromethane is a completely separate fuel — there’s no gasoline, there’s no nitrous oxide, it’s a totally separate fuel all to its own (and) it’ll give you about 400 per cent more power.” Exactly how much power is that? About 900-horsepower and 1,000 tarmac-ripping footpounds of torque produced from a 175 cubicinch V-Twin Harley-based engine. Cownden emphasizes Harley-based because at first glance most wouldn’t be to identify the 17-foot, 900-pound metallic monstrosity featuring a rear tire that’s 14 inches wide. It’s so lengthy that Cownden had to perform about a 15-point turn to move the bike off the stand where it was stored at the combination dealership/ race-prep shop Steve Drane Harley-Davidson in Langford. That’s where the custom-made parts sourced from all over North America were assembled to form the now-famous bike that broke multiple records at the Canadian Motorcycle Drag Racing Association championship series at Mission Raceway in August. Cownden made the quickest official Canadian quarter-mile pass for a nitro-fueled Harley-Davidson at 6.33 seconds, and later set the fastest top speed of 222.99 miles per hour. “I think it’s an exciting time for me because, in the big picture, I’m really young compared to most of the guys,” says Cownden, 39. “They all refer to me as the kid.” Getting to the top tier of competition can be a slow process for many — but not for Cownden who quickly reached the big leagues despite only having raced professionally for six seasons. He got his start working at Steve Drane as a motorcycle mechanic and attending races on the Island. One day he turned from audience member to participant after borrowing a company bike and winning a trophy his first time out. A year later, he started building his own. “It kind of went from (dirt drags in Nanaimo and Lake Cowichan) to Western Speedway to Mission. I was licensed for Top Fuel the end of the second year really.” Even though flying down the track at breakneck speeds is a regular activity for Cownden, he says the only injury he’s sustained while competing has been a broken toe from hitting a cone at 100 mph. Ironically, it was while riding a normal Harley years before he started racing that he suffered his only major accident. Riding up Shawnigan Lake Road he hit a van head-on and almost lost his leg as a result. “Five operations and eight-and-a-half months later I learned how to walk again.” Maybe that’s why Cownden feels safer on the drag strip than he does on the street, where he’s without his spine protector, titanium-knuckle gloves, bullet-proof vest and steel-toe boots. He won’t be wearing them for a while, though, as the season is finished up and the winter will be spent performing a complete tear-down and rebuild of the bike. In April, the crew will travel to Florida for an All-Harley Drag Racing Association event, one of many that keeps Cownden on the road for at least three months out of the seven-month season. The rest of the time, he is in what he calls his “entrepreneur mode” running popular downtown nightclubs Touch and Sugar. “This year we had a big rig, it was from another Harley dealership in Alberta that sponsored us. It was a 78-foot long rig that sleeps 10,” he says. “We did 43,000 kilometres driving this year.” For more information, visit dcrtopfuel.com

To qualify, customer must turn in a 2005-model-year-or-older vehicle that is in running condition (able to start and move and without missing parts) and has been properly registered/plated or insured for the last 3 months (the “Criteria”).
