Editor's Note Hi everyone! Fahad here. If you didn't know, I'm serving as your 2018-19 District Bulletin Editor! I’m a senior at the Bronx High School of Science and have served as my club's Bulletin Editor and Webmaster for the 2017-18 service year. Over the past few months, I've released the Summer and Fall Editions of The Empire Key! Additionally, I have worked personally with each Lieutenant Governor to ensure that members remain updated on everything that's going on in Key Club on the District and International level. Alongside Newsletters, I've also helped design Pin Designs for this year's Leadership Training Conference, which I hope you'll love as the conference comes around!

Speaking of the Annual Leadership Training Conference, we're right around the corner! For those of you attending, brace yourselves for a weekend full of workshops, fundraising, and FUN! Each district committee is in charge of specific branches related to bettering the NY District as a whole.

Events Engagement In the past, we worked on creating Fall Rally Evaluation Reports to be filled out by every Lieutenant Governor. This is so next year’s District Board can improve the conference for all attendees. If you didn’t get the chance to attend this year, please reach out to your respective Lieutenant Governors or the District Executive Assistants on attending them once school starts in the Fall. It takes a ton of time and hard work from the District Board, so your attendance is highly appreciated. We have also been working on revising the District Policies and Bylaws. These documents had not modified for several years and did not reflect current New York District policy. Therefore we amended the District Policies and passed a bylaw amendment proposal at our Mid-Winter Board Meeting. The delegates will vote on the proposal at the Leadership Training Conference, so please make sure to read them thoroughly.

Awards Hey NYDKC! It’s your awards chairs, Mara and Anson here again to bring you another update. The awards deadlines have passed for all awards, except for those submitted at LTC. We are currently in the process of grading everything we’re received! Thank you so much for applying! See you at LTC!

12

Endorsed Projects The Endorsed Projects Committee has been tracking funds for our endorsed projects! We have raised: $19,269 for Comfort Cases $2,715 for One Tree Planted $2,945 for Kamp Kiwanis $1,277 for Kiwanis Lyme Disease $930 for Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center As you can see, some of these worthy causes are still a bit short of donations. Please consider fundraising for them!

K-Family Relations The Kiwanis Family Relations Committee is currently seeking to complete the promotion video that advocates for Kiwanis Relations. We plan to release this video near the Leadership Training Conference date as the new board familiarizes themselves with their club functions. We are also seeking to create a map that highlights not only the different key clubs in our district, but also nearby Kiwanians, Circle-K, Builders Club, and more, to promote interaction between local Kiwanis branches.

Membership and Growth The Membership Growth and Development Committees has recently been working on increasing membership for LTC. We worked on a letter with the help of our International Trustee to send out to clubs. This letter was a invitation to LTC and to make sure all clubs knew about this event. We also have started on making a list of membership throughout the district. This is to see just how much our district has grown within the last few years. We have been working very hard the past couple of months and we hope to see a lot of people at this year's conference!

Union-Endicott Key Club's Holiday Party Article By Camille Brock, Division 20

On December 20th, the Union-Endicott Key Club hosted an amazing holiday party for students in their elementary schools. Throughout the event, Key Clubbers made ornaments, frosted cookies, had their faces painted, read books, made slime, and danced with Devil Dog, who is the mascot of the Binghamton Devils. They even left with gifts from Santa himself! I had the opportunity to attend and had the most amazing time helping out. The kids were so happy, and all of the Key Club members were too. What everyone did that day,

18

"A truly moving and inspiring event" Quote by Camille Brock Division 20

and on the days before to prepare for this event was truly incredible. I am so proud of the Union-Endicott Key Club. Every event they host, and project they complete, seems to be a success. They’re going to do big things in the future!

Salamanca's Thanksgiving Community Dinner Article By Nyles Panus, Division 26 The Thanksgiving Dinner was an event put on by the Salamanca Key Club. It offered a free meal to the community and inspired community members to come together and have fun while Key Clubbers gave back to those who have supported us. There were two days of service (other than planning) that went into the event; the first day was preparation for the meal and the second day was the day of the event during which we served food to the community. During the day, there were many different jobs that had to be done in an effective manner. There were people guiding the elderly indoors, collecting tickets to keep track of how many people were served, serving food on the line, preparing food to be served, cleaning

up, and much more. There was some fun competition over the mashed potatoes and stuffing sections as they competed to out serve each other and “survey” the community on which side they preferred. I feel that the event boosts the community’s holiday spirit and makes those who volunteer for the event that it is just that – volunteering. Nobody feels pressured or stressed to help out. As a Key Clubber, I believe this is a great way to help recruit members for a club at the beginning of a school year and is one of the reasons that I continue to serve with Key Club.Sadly, members from neighboring communities did not attend. What made this event special is that it is not restrictive to our community. Other events are typically tailored to a certain portion of the population, but this event is allinclusive and invites all members of the community.

From Thanksgiving Dinners to Meal Packages to Fundraising, Key Clubbers have actively fought against hunger & poverty! 19

NORTH SHORE'S SPLASH INTO SERVICE

North Shore Key Club At Cohen's Children's Medical Center Article By Hannah Kareff, Division 4N

The North Shore Key Club sponsors the annual holiday toy drive for the Cohen Children’s Medical Center. The Key Club spends the months before collecting toys from the students and faculty of their school. Cohen Children’s Medical Center is one of the top pediatric hospitals in New York, and helps thousands of children every year. This event is a North Shore School District-wide event that has been taking place the past 31 years. After spending time wrapping and decorating the presents, on December 21st, the Key Club traveled to Cohen’s Center to deliver the toys. They were also accompanied by the North Shore Chamber Orchestra, who entertained the patients and staff. The music raised the spirits of the children and their families, and they were very grateful for the toys that the Key Club brought. The students spend time with the patients and their families, playing with the toys and entertaining the patients. These two groups of students made an ordinary day into something very special for the children at Cohen. It was a fun day for all involved! The members of the club enjoyed their time with the patients, and were grateful for their ability to give back to the community.

HO HO HO FOR NORTH SHORE SERVICE The North Shore K-Family joined hands once again for the annual holiday party at St Christopher-Ottillie Children’s Home in Sea Cliff New York. The traditional arts/crafts activity took place just before a special visit from the North Pole with Kiwanian Santa & Mrs Claus arriving to hand out the gifts to the children. Pictured is the K Family group from the North Shore key Club and Kiwanis Club who participated in this event. Taking “Center Stage” is Mrs Claus, Santa and Key Clubber elf katie Rogers. It is a wonderful thing that Santa & Mrs Claus are both members of the North Shore Kiwanis Club!! The North Shore K-Family wishes you all a happy and healthy New Year with smiles galore for service to our communities!

OCEANSIDE'S HOLIDAY DOOR DECORATION EVENT Getting Into The Holiday Spirit WRITTEN BY TIFFANY CHOU DIVISION 7

22

Holiday Door Decorating is an annual Key Club event that helps us raise money for the Leadership Training Conference in March. Throughout the start of December, a form is sent to all the teachers at our school to purchase a door for $5 with a choice of Christmas, Hannukah, or holiday-themed wrapping paper. Two weeks before Winter Break, students donate wrapping paper for Key Club hours, and we all get together to put wrapping paper and tags on the doors. As the current Editor/Web Master of my school’s Key Club, I was able to both participate in the event by working with my friends to cover several doors with wrapping paper as well as film videos and take pictures to post on our website and Twitter accounts. This year, Key Club enlisted our school’s Football, Lacrosse, and Model Congress teams to help us decorate the doors since the process often takes several

hours to complete.Because this year was my first year as an officer, I was able to go from door to door checking how neatly the wrapping paper was placed on the door, which was very funny because wrapping the doors is a lot harder than it seems. So many groups had to redo their door because there were wrinkles or rips in the paper, and we worked on getting them done in the best way possible. For example, the day before the actual event started, my advisors did a “trial” run on my AP Economics teacher’s door, and the next day, he told me how messy it looked and

demanded that we redo it. I made sure to take responsibility for putting the paper on the door with my friends, and when we finished, it was the flattest, neatest wrapped door in the school, in my opinion. Every year, participating in Holiday Door Decorating is such a fun experience because we get to stay late at the school, put on music while decorating the doors, and see our school come to life with the holiday spirit. Personally, my favorite part is walking through the halls the next day and seeing all the wrapping paper on the doors- it definitely adds to the spirit of the season and just makes our school a happier place to be at before the break.

Division 24's Noodle Fest: Raising Awareness & Funds For Breast Cancer WRITTEN BY NYLES PANUS, DIVISION 26

The Noodle Fest was an event to help those with breast cancer. Breast Cancer hurts many people, and so we are trying to help relieve some of the pain they may go through. Some pain these patients may have is when they are in the car. The seatbelt can hurt their chest and so we are trying to help with that. This event was open to the entire division

24. We had Norwood Norfolk Key Clubbers and Kiwanians. We also even had some of the K-Kids there. At this event we all worked together to make seat belt covers out of pool noodles. We all had hot glue guns and we took the pool noodle and glued fabric to it. With all of us working together we were able to make about 100 seat belt covers. These seat belt covers were donated to the Cancer Association. In this time that we had we were

only able to make this many. We still had many pool noodles left and the Norwood -Norfolk students took some back to their club to make them. This is an event that division 24 will continue to do because this was so much fun and it helps so many people. We all had so much fun at this event and I cannot wait to do it again next year! Pictured Below are Norwood-Norfolk Key Clubbers, K-Kids, and Kiwanians.

District Project ONE TREE PLANTED

For every dollar donated, One Tree Planted pledges to plant one tree. One Tree Planted is a non-profit organization that aims to tackle deforestation and environmental destruction by planting trees, one at a time. This organization plants trees in North America, South America, Asia, and Africa. Many of the regions where they plant trees are places that have suffered forest fires and floods. In the process, One Tree Planted has a greater impact as well; they're able to create jobs, build communities, and protect habitats all over the world.

Fundraising Goal: $6,000.00 Current Amount Raised: $2,715.76

Governor's Project COMFORT CASES Comfort Cases is an organization that strives to provide backpacks with daily essentials to children in the foster care system. Their inspiration comes from the belief that every child deserves to feel a sense of dignity - which comes from the fact that a foster child is able to call a special bag his own. With this in mind, the charity provides daily essentials such as lotion, books, pencils, pajamas, toothpaste, soap, stuffed animals, and more to foster youth around the United States.

Fundraising Goal: $5,000.00 Current Amount Raised: $19,269.75 26

Running For Higher Office! WHY RUN FOR HIGHER OFFICE? Key Club International provides High-School Students with many different opportunities to develop leadership skills in their schools. Running for Higher Officer is a great way to become more involved with Key Club, build your network, and lead your peers to a a successful service year!

WHICH POSITIONS CAN I RUN FOR? Key Clubbers can run for positions on the Club, Divisional, District, or International level. With each level higher up, there is a great time commitment associated with said positions.

WHERE DO I START? If you're thinking about running for higher office - whether it be on the club or district level - start by asking yourself why you want to run! You want to reflect on your time in Key Club, specifically focusing in on aspects of the club you hope to improve or better. This will serve as the foundation for your campaign ideas and policies.

HOW DO I CREATE A COMPELLING SPEECH? Reflect! Reflect! Reflect! What does Key Club mean to you? Why do you want to become further involved with Key Club? Using your memories, experiences, and favorite moments in Key Club, create a speech that will resonate with members and their own memories in Key Club.

HELP! I HAVE A FEAR OF PUBLIC SPEAKING! NOW, WHAT? Practice! Practice! Practice! It can be nerve-wrecking to speak in front of large crowds - especially if you don't know your audience personally! The key to improving your public speaking skills is to practice your speech several times in front of you, your own family members, and friends! The more practice you have under your belt, the better your oratorical skills will be!

PHEW, I MADE IT! WHAT NEXT? Relax! But, also be sure to get started on your campaign promises and ideas. Your time in office whether it be as president, lieutenant governor, or international trustee - is a time where you have the ability to spark positive changes for your fellow Key Clubbers!
