A word from your Bulletin Editor Hello NYDKC! I hope that you are all getting excited for LTC! I cannot wait to meet all of the wonderful Key Clubbers from around the state and hear about all of the incredible service you do for your homes, schools, and communities. I am always so excited to read the service spotlights that you guys send in, and I am even more excited to meet you all in person to hear about it! LTC is a life changing experience. If you are attending this year’s conference, you will not be disappointed. The District Board has some fun events planned! I have been working to create promotional cover photos for the entire District Board so that we can successfully promote LTC to the New York District. During the month of February, I have also created a series of promotional newsletters regarding LTC that were sent out to the club presidents. I have been working with the Executive Board to come up with some of the graphics for this year’s conference, such as the t-shirt and pin designs. Governor’s Update Hello New York District Key Clubbers! Happy March! I hope you are all excited for the last month of the service year and to celebrate with over 800 Key Clubbers at the 68th annual Leadership Training Conference! For those of you attending the Leadership Training Conference, you are in for an unforgettable experience! We will have 5 rounds of informative workshops, a professional keynote speaker, a PLAYFAIR icebreaker event, a dance, and so much more! Keep in mind to bring between $5-$10 to participate in the fundraising events, and to send in your registration payments by March 8th to secure your spot at the conference! I am truly excited to celebrate with you all! The end of the service year invites a multitude of emotions. However, I truly hope that you feel proud of what you have accomplished this year. We have raised $112,934.15, completed 85,932.73 service hours, acquired 12,235 members, and we have chartered three new clubs. This is a huge accomplishment, and I cannot thank you enough for all of the time and effort you have dedicated to this organization this year. Every small service project you attended and penny you donated made an impact on the success that our District has experienced this year to better the homes, schools, and communities in New York and beyond. I feel incredibly blessed to have served such a driven, selfless, and inspirational group of people. Secretary’s Update Hello New York District Key Club! As we approach Leadership Training Conference, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for the amazing service you have done. One of the best parts of being District Secretary is receiving Monthly Report Forms from clubs all over the district. Through these submissions, I have the opportunity to see the diverse and original ways in which New York District’s Key Clubs have served their school, community, and world. From visits to the soup kitchen, to helping out at a local school, I have read about hundreds of events in which you have participated, and reading these reports really intensifies my pride in being a part of this great district. As of now, 85,409.73 service hours have been reported, and I am certain that we will reach our goal of 90,000 hours by LTC. Currently, 87 January MRFs have been submitted, along with 8 February MRFs. The February Monthly Report Form, which will be the last MRF of the service year, will be due on March 10th. If your club has submitted all of its paperwork so far during the service year, it is currently in the running to receive the Perfect Paperwork Award. Please be sure to submit the last Monthly Report Form on time so as to receive credit for its submission! In this past service year, 137 clubs have submitted the Election Report Form. However, numerous clubs in the district did not submit this form, often making it difficult for their Lieutenant Governors to contact them and build a relationship with them. I strongly urge every club to submit the ERF as soon as possible after club elections. I will be sending out the ERF for the 2016-2017 service year very soon, so be sure to submit it if your club has already had its elections! To those incoming secretaries: I am beyond excited to meet you at LTC, as I will have the honor of running your training workshop. I truly intend to provide you with tools to help you and your club succeed, and I hope you have a vested interest in helping your club serve in the best ways possible! Treasurer’s Update
Hello New York District Key Club! I hope everyone has had a wonderful 2016 so far! We are approaching LTC very soon, which means this service year is coming to an end. I would like to thank you all for your amazing work this year. It was an honor to work with all of you. I hope all of you are attending this year’s Leadership Training Conference. LTC is one of my favorite things about Key Club. It’s an unforgettable experience where you will meet people from around the state, attend workshops, and elect your new district board. We have only a few weeks left until LTC, so please get your FRFs in. We want to achieve our $100,000 fundraising goal and we are currently at $84,000. I have sent out emails to every club treasurer, and I have updated you on all of the FRFs you have submitted this year. Please fill out an FRF right now if there’s a fundraiser for which you haven’t filled one out yet. If you are stuck on a charity to which to donate the funds, please consider choosing one of our district supported charities. If you get your FRFs in before LTC, it may qualify you for one of our district charities’ fundraising awards. I am proud of all of your hard work so far in planning and running these fundraisers. I look forward to announcing how much we raised at LTC! A quick message on dues: good job on getting these in. We have a goal of 100% dues submission, so if you still have not paid your dues, please do so ASAP. The clubs that have not paid dues yet are suspended, and if they still don’t pay by October, they will have to pay $100 reactivation fee. I hope no club has to go through this, so please get your dues in. If there are new members that joined since you submitted your initial dues payment, just add these additional names into the roster and send out another invoice. Also, a tip for next year: if your club waits to collect all dues and submit them at once, please know that you can actually send in dues invoices multiple times. So, after you receive your first 15 members’ dues payments, you may submit that first. Then, once you receive the rest of the dues, you can submit and additional invoice. This may help your club achieve early bird status and prevent you from being suspended. I look forward to seeing many of you at LTC this year and I hope some of you attend my workshops. Executive Assistant’s Update Hello New York District Key Clubbers, Welcome to the last Empire Key of the service year (insert mixed emotions here!). As the year comes to a close, we look towards Leadership Training Conference, which is fast approaching. I can’t wait to celebrate a year’s worth of incredible service and charity on the part of our divisions, clubs, and, most importantly, members. In the time since the last Empire Key, the district level has been hard at work preparing to put on the best conference we have ever had. Besides planning for fundraisers and service projects, and LTC in general, I have been primarily working on creating the Conference program. Beyond that, it has been pedal to the metal tying up the year with our District Committees and Lieutenant Governors. Beyond just the work that comes with the approach of Leadership Training Conference, it has been full of reflection on the year we have had. Between connecting with Key Clubbers from around the District like never before, planning Fall Rallies and projects for the District, running the District Pen Pals, dealing with failure and success, and falling even further in love (is that possible?) with Key Club, this year has been the best of my life, and for that, there is no one more deserving of thanks than you, the District. So thank you for making this Service Year amazing. Thank you for treating me to a great District. Most importantly, thank you for making the world a better place. The service that you provide as Key Clubbers is imperative in the world in which we live. The difference you all make constitutes the reason why I do what I do, and the same goes for all of the other District Board members. Your homes, schools, and communities are better off because of you and your work, so, one last time, THANK YOU. I can’t wait to see you all at LTC. Webmaster’s Update Hello New York District Key Club, We’re nearing both the end and peak of our 2015-2016 service year, so let’s celebrate all the great things we’ve accomplished together at this year’s LTC! These last few months have been quite hectic with LTC planning, keeping up with the website and tech updates, and schoolwork in general. There are only several days left until we can finally all meet again at LTC, but I’ve still got some awesome updates for you as Webmaster. Firstly, remember to email me any service spotlights at tanyahao.tech@nydkc.org! They’ll be featured in the ‘Service Spotlights’ section of the website, along with any photos (much appreciated) that you send me. Have any memorable fundraisers or events that shine? Write a short paragraph about what was done and how your members made an influence in the community! This is a great opportunity to display your club’s work to the district. In addition, please remember to check the LTC website for new information. It has a schedule, elections information, forms to fill out before coming out to Albany, and even a FAQ section where your questions are answered! The bulk of my work is now dedicated to preparing for LTC. Apply for Technology Co-Chair as soon as possible; we’ll be working together during the conference a lot. Lastly, a few district committees also have their own pages on the website, in which their resources and fundraising goals are all posted. Please definitely check them out; they contain fundraising advice and more! I’m so excited to see all of you at LTC!

Conference/Special Projects Chair’s Update Hello New York District Key Clubbers, 20th.
As a reminder, the conference will be held from March 18th through March
I hope that everyone applied for award! Even if you haven’t there are awards that you can get by participating in events at LTC. You can participate in the talent show, where you showcase a talent that you have, the oratorical contest, where you answer a given question and then present it, and poster contests, which are brought up and judged that weekend. I hope everyone takes advantage of these opportunities! There are going to be several fundraisers this year, including the miracle minute, Take a bite out of Lyme, a red carpet photo op, and of course, the penny wars. We will be donating to the Kiwanis district charities, the Giving Circle, and the Children’s Miracle Network. Whether you have been to Leadership Training Conference before or not, you should try and attend as many workshops as possible. These are some of the most important parts of the weekend, as you will learn valuable skills that you can apply to your life in and out of Key Club, whether you are a member or president, freshman or senior. As Governor Hanna mentioned in her update, the New York District would like to concentrate its efforts towards the Governor’s Project in an organization called the Giving Circle. Of course you may still support any type of hunger related organization, but this is the organization Hanna would like us to really focus on. If the New York District can raise $10,000 for the Giving circle, we will be able to purchase a farm in Uganda and have it named the “New York District Key Club Farm”. This roughly equates to each club raising $50, an easily manageable goal! 14

THE THIRST PROJECT “Women and children spend on average six to eight hours each day walking to fetch water. The average distance that women and children in developing communities walk to fetch water is 3.75 miles. The time children spend collecting water keeps them from going to school and getting and education.”

Imagine if every single student responded and activated around the global water crisis. When a student gains perspective on an issue as big as the global water crisis, amazing things happen! In just six years we have spoken to over 300,000 students, and STUDENTS have been the driving force in helping us raise over 8 million dollars, giving clean water to 13 different countries and over 280,000 people! 15

The Eliminate Project Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces with The Eliminate Project in order to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. 60,000 infants, and many women as well, lose their lives to this disease every year. For only $1.80, a mother can receive three doses of immunization to protect herself and her future children from this deadly disease. Together, our goal is to raise $110 million for the Eliminate Project by the newly extended deadline of 2016. As of June 11th, 2015 Kiwanisfamily SLP have raised $4,604,749, which has saved over 3,350 lives. The New York District has raised $1978.79 thus far in our 2015-2016 service year! Internationally, through Trick or Treat for UNICEF, we have broken our record for the most money raised through this event, with an amazing sum of $635k. Kamp Kiwanis “Kamp Kiwanis is a program located in Taberg, New York, which provides children aged 8 to 14 (including those with special needs) with a unique camping experience. Kamp Kiwanis allows children to just be themselves, no matter what their situation, and encourages them to participate in team building exercises and activities, including boating, sports, and campfires. Kamp Kiwanis costs nothing for the children that attend. Through donations, the Kamp sponsors adults and children, allowing them to experience the program regardless of their financial position.� Visit www.kampkiwanis.org for more information!

District Charities cont. Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center “The Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center is designed to help treat and protect children. It is a Kiwanis-Hospital association that was created in order to provide the funds and staff necessary to create a trauma center with extensive medical assistance and safety. Kiwanis helps to provide treatment as to meet the needs of families with children suffering from trauma (e.g., transportation). Trauma takes the lives of 25,000 children each year and leaves another 120,000 children permanently disabled. An estimated 25% of these deaths and disabilities could be prevented with proper and prompt care. Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation “Lyme Disease was brought to Kiwanis’ attention during 2000-01 New York District Kiwanis Governor John Gridley vowed to do something to help children afflicted with this terrible disease. The Lyme Disease Project was quickly set up to help pay for medical treatment for children with this disease. Unfortunately most insurance companies do not pay for its treatment, which is very expensive. Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria, which are usually transmitted by the deer tick. Lyme Disease may affect the brain in many ways. The most common is a disturbance in thinking. Other symptoms that occur frequently include headache, mood swings, irritability, depression, and marked fatigue. The spirochete which causes Lyme Disease can invade the central nervous system within days to a week of initial skin infection. The majority of people who are treated early with antibiotics do well and incur no long-term problems. Major Emphasis March of Dimes: “The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. March of Dimes was founded by our 32nd President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in the fight against polio. After the discovery of the polio vaccine, March of Dimes focused their efforts to improve the health of babies and has been successful with the help and enthusiasm of many grassroots volunteers. For decades, Key Club has partnered with the March of Dimers to give every baby a healthy start. Key Club members raise thousands of dollars annually through various programs, including collecting change, holding dances, and taking part in March of Dimes’ signature event, March for Babies.” So far, NYDKC has raised $923.90 for March of Dimes! Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals: “Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is a nonprofit organization that raises money to benefit hospitalized kids while increasing awareness of its member hospitals. All CMN Hospitals contributions directly benefit hospitals, helping to purchase up-todate equipment, train staff, conduct life-saving research, implement outreach programs and provide health care for children whose parents can’t afford to pay. Key Club participates with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals by sponsoring fundraising events. WARM BEGINNINGS The 2015-2016 Kiwanis First Lady’s Project In keeping with our Governor’s Project “We Take Care of Our Own”, 2015-2016 First Lady, Helene Irvine has chosen a project near and dear to her heart. As a registered nurse, Helene sees firsthand many newborn babies leaving the hospital to go home with very little in the way of supplies & layette items. Our challenge this year is to donate basic items for newborns and new mothers who are in need. Let’s plan a fun event - a Baby Shower—yes, men invited. We can help a newborn start out his or her life in style. Suggestions are: T-shirts, receiving blankets, hats, socks, bibs, pajamas, buntings, onesies, pacifiers, baby bottles, sweaters, etc. Choose a newborn nursery in your local hospital, or to an organization in your own community that assists new mothers with their babies. A small gesture will be so important in the life of a child.

On January 6th, 2016, the North Shore Key Club sponsored a handball benefit tournament for the Families in Support of Treatment Organization (FIST). The event was very well attended and supported by North Shore High School students. Assisting with this event was the North Shore Kiwanis Club with President Roger Hill, DPP Doug Barnaby, and SDPLG Larry Benedetti. The New York State Governor Forbes Irvine was also in attendance for this wonderful event to support the cause; FIST is an organization that addresses problems on substance abuse. Meals on Heels took place on February 18th and 19th during Mid-Winter break at Jan Hus Presbyterian Church. I went on the 18th and overall, it was an amazing event with nothing but good vibes! When we got to the church, we split up into groups of 4, each with two delivery bags and a list of addresses. The people on the delivery list are all home-bound seniors who need assistance. At first I was pretty nervous about the deliveries since I wasn’t too sure how the doormen would. Fortunately, they all knew about the scheduled delivery and were super friendly! The seniors were friendly as well; many of them started conversations and were very social! The weather was nice (huge plus!), so our walks from apartment to apartment were pleasant. All in all, the event was definitely a success and the interactions with the seniors were uplifting. For those who are looking to volunteer with Meals on Heels again: we will most likely be working with them more frequently during the spring once the weather becomes really nice! Gavin Li Division 8

K-Family
SPRING 2016
K-Kids is a student-led community service club for elementary students that teaches members the value of helping others through participation in community service projects and club activities.
Nearly 40, 000 middle and junior high students in 1,300 clubs in 18 nations contribute service to school and community while developing leadership and people skills. Builders Club members implement practical service-learning principals as they focus on supporting organizations that focus on the needs of children.
Aktion Club members in more than 200 clubs in seven nations allow adults living with disabilities to develop initiative and leadership skills through hands-on service. These adults return to the community the benefits, help, and caring they have received.
Circle K International (CKI) is the premiere university service organization in the world sponsored by Kiwanis International. With clubs on more than 550 campuses globally, programming is based upon the tenets of service, leadership, and fellowship.
Kiwanis members around the globe have one common goal: To serve the children of the world. Kiwanis advocates this vision every day by providing opportunities to serve for every member of a community through Service Leadership Programs.
