District News BYLAWS Hello New York District, I am one of your District Executive Assistant and the Rules and Regulation Committee Chair. The New York District Bylaws are an essential part of our district; they are the foundation in which our district runs. They are the constitution of our district and like any good constitution it adapts to changing times (purpose of the Elastic Clause). We are the Elastic Clause to the New York District Bylaws. We do this through making amendments. The amendment process is fairly simple and it starts with reading the bylaws: http://nydkc.org/board/committees/bylaws. Read through them and if you see changes, go to your club to get approval. All amends must be nominated by your home club. Then you may submit them! Please email your amends to myself at emilygicewicz.EA@gmail.com. Your email must include your name, club, the original text of the amendment, and what you would like to change. The amendments are due before the Leadership Training Conference, March 22, 2013. It is up to you to enhance our district! Please take time to read our bylaws. Please email me with any questions! Yours in the Spirit of Service, Emily Gicewicz NYDKC Executive Assistant

Come join Key Clubbers from all over the mighty New York District to celebrate 65 years of service at our annual Leadership Training Conference! What is the Leadership Training Conference? The Leadership Training Conference is a 3 day event where members from all of New York come together to elect a new district board, meet other members, attend workshops, learn about service projects, celebrate our accomplishments and of course, have fun. It is an unforgettable experience and there is so much a member can learn from attending the conference. This year, the theme is “Under the Sea.” Get your pirates or sailor hats or Hawaiian shirts ready! The conference will take place from March 22—March 24 in Albany and the Holiday Inn. Information regarding costs, transportation, and such can be found on the official LTC website: conference.nydkc.org/home.htm. If you have any questions please feel free to email the district board! In addition, continue to check the NY District website nydkc.org for updates. Stay toon for an official program for the conference! Speaking of the program, help us cover the cost of it by buying advertisements! These advertisements will be placed in the program. The program ad form can be found on the official LTC website under forms. Send to your family, friends, employers, teachers, etc.

Service Spotlights FIRST MEETING OF THE YEAR On September 13th, Richmond Hill High School had its first official key club meeting of the year. It was nerve wrecking and exciting at the same time. Setting up the first meeting alone, was a crazy process. Many members had wanted an early meeting (9th period) but it wasn’t possible because none of the advisors were free at that time. Then advertising key club was difficult as well with an undetermined meeting date. But luckily, thanks to our president Khemraj and the help of others we were able to set up a meeting day. On Thursday as I walked up four flights of stairs, all I kept thinking about was the first meeting. I was hoping many members would attend, so you can imagine my excitement when I walked into a room that was so crowded that people were standing up. It was such a huge turnout. It was great to see a room full of familiar faces, knowing that they are people who want to give back to the community and make a difference in the world. Not that I didn’t know that already because I have met so many people from key club, but it was still a great feeling seeing all those people there. I don’t know if other officers felt this way when they had their first key club meeting of the year or maybe it is because I am going to be leaving high school in a couple months but that first meeting meant a lot to me. It showed promise of a new exciting beginning and made me felt that this year would be another great year for key club. Mohamed Bibi

BREAST CANCER WALK On a cool Saturday morning, James Madison Key Club members all gathered in Central Park and awaited the start of the Breast Cancer Walk. As the pink ribbon broke, many pink jackets and pants rolled through. There was a unified spirit within the walk as everyone was motivated to bring a change to Breast Cancer. Breast Cancer affects one in eight women and leads to death in approximately 40,000 women in America. This walk provided a direct opportunity to change the way Breast Cancer is perceived by making an effort to eliminate as the more people walked; more people gave donations for researching Breast Cancer. As we walked, we also noticed past survivors. That heightened our drive for walking the five miles. I was proud of all the Key Club Members' efforts to make a change in their community. Furthermore, I want to encourage everyone to participate in more walks and help make a change in their communities. Azka Javaid Vice President of James Madison High School Key Club

Service Spotlights FALL RALLY What is Fall Rally? Fall Rally is a meeting where groups of schools from different boroughs bond and interact with each other to have meetings and combine fun that lasts for hours. This year's Fall Rally took place in Edward R. Murrow High School on November 10th, 2012. Three hundred members including officers from Divisions 8, 8A, 9, 10, and 11were present. We raised and donated a total of $1,200 as a whole group to one of our district projects, The Eliminate Project. The Eliminate Project is a project to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This disease steals the lives of many innocent babies and women around the world each year. During the Fall Rally, there was a rich amount of workshops for officers as well as members to learn about the different aspects of Key Club. These workshops included: The Governor's Project, District Projects, Planning Successful Fundraisers, Public Relations, Key Club Get the Word Out, Running for Higher Office, Making Meetings Move, College Applications, Ice Breakers, Public Speaking, and K- Family Relations. These sessions were very helpful for those members who wanted to run for higher office and for officers who wanted to learn ways to recruit members smoothly. Overall, it was a successful, helpful, and informing event. Michelle Chen President of James Madison High School Key Club

For the first time the Bishop Kearney Key Club organized a fundraiser which we like to call Feed a Family. This fundraiser collected money to support the Open Door Mission. Feed a Family was a competition between SAP (Student Activity Period) rooms to see which room could collect the most money for the fundraiser. The SAP room that collected the most money was rewarded with a formal Thanksgiving lunch and early dismissal after the lunch. The Distillery donated two fresh turkeys and the entire Thanksgiving meal was prepared by Keenan’s Restaurant.

K E A R N E Y

The goal for Feed a Family was set at $1,000.00. At the school-wide assembly that kicked off the fundraiser, Mr. Miller, the Bishop Kearney Dean of Students, promised students a dress down day if the goal was exceeded. We were surprised to see how involved and generous students were. For this reason we raised more than double the amount of our original goal. Students were donating large sums of money not even worrying about if they won the Thanksgiving lunch or not. The total amount raised in the Feed a Family fundraiser, which was donated to the Open Door Mission, was an amazing $2,575.00. Since the total raised far exceeded that of our original goal, Mr. Miller, not only awarded Bishop Kearney students with a dress down day but also a sneaker week. During sneaker week students will be able to wear any shoes with their normal uniform rather than the regular dress shoes.

Feed a Family marks the most successful fundraiser that the Bishop Kearney Key Club has ever had. So successful that Michael Hennessy, Open Door Mission Executive Direction, and Chris Scribani, Director of Development and Communications, visited Bishop Kearney to thank the school. Giuliana Pietrantoni, Bishop Kearney Key Club President, and Christine Reiss, Key Club Editor, presented the check to the representatives from the Open Door Mission on the Bishop Kearney morning news broadcast. Presentation of the check to Open Door Mission representative was also covered by WHEC, channel 10 local news station. The money donated to the Open Door Mission was used to feed over 5,000 people Thanksgiving dinner this Thanksgiving. The success of this fundraiser is thanks to the Feed a Family committee of Bishop Kearney Key Club members who collected money from SAP rooms, counted and recorded totals for each room, made posters, and encouraged students to contribute. The Bishop Kearney Key Club plans to organize this fundraiser annually for many years to come.

International News Mothers and babies all over the world are benefiting from Key Clubbers’ work to raise funds for The Eliminate Project. It’s time to be recognized for your efforts. All Key Club members and clubs are eligible for special recognition when their contributions reach a certain level.   

Elimidallion: award given to any Key Club member or advisor who makes a one-time donation of $625 or more 1K Clubs: status given to Key Clubs that reach the $1,000 donation level in one year (Oct. 1–Sept. 30) Global Service Society: gold, silver and bronze levels of recognition, based on your club’s per-member average of contributions within one year (Oct. 1 - Sept. 30)

As of the end of November, members of CKI, Key Club, Builders Club, K-Kids and Aktion Club have donated more than US$1 million to The Eliminate Project. That translates to 555,555 lives saved or protected! But there’s much more work to be done: Keep up the effort to educate people about MNT and to raise funds. Reaching our goal of eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth will take the efforts of every Kiwanis-family member—every CKI, Key Club, Builders Club, K-Kids and Aktion Club member—so that means you! If you raised a minimum of US$5.40 a year—the equivalent of saving three lives (US$1.80 x 3 = US$5.40)—our Kiwanis-family fundraising goals would be met during our campaign’s remaining three years. Keep fundraising and help us eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus!

Join Kiwanis in its fight to end bullying! Kiwanis believes that: - Its service leadership programs can be a solution to the bullying crisis many schools face today. - Students who serve their communities will be less likely to bully their peers, become victims of bullying or stand by and watch it happen to their classmates.  Members of Kiwanis’ service leadership programs are examples to their peers of how serving others leads to a safe and happy community.
