Robert Sharkey, President Throughout the month of December the North Shore Key Club held their annual Kids at the Kettle program for the Salvation Army. Key Club members stood next to the kettle and rang bells to attract shoppers to donate. The kettle was stationed outside of the Stop and Shop super market in Glen Cove, NY. Over $3600 were collected through the program. The donations from the fundraiser were used to provide assistance to families in need. The Salvation Army is a charity founded in 1865 and provides a variety services to those in need. The program concluded on December 24th with a special visit from Santa.

These past few months, the East Hampton High School Key Club did a service that hit particularly close to home for our members. Unfortunately, one of our Key Clubber's mothers was diagnosed with stage five Leukemia. As an attempt to aid her and her family through this tragic time in their lives and to mollify the strains of carrying out tedious household tasks, we have put our members to work building gift baskets for the family (dubbed the "basket drive"). These baskets included everything from toiletries basket, to girls night out, to road trip, to thanksgiving meal baskets. As we all came together as a Key Club Family, the baskets were distributed periodically to the target family. Not only have we taken care of mundane tasks for them, such as buying toiletries etc., we also helped them find enjoy their time together as a family. Services like these are what separates our Key Club from the rest.

The holiday season brought good cheer to many throughout the community here at North Shore. Many gathered with their families to celebrate the holiday season. The North Shore Key Club decided to spread the holiday joy by going to the Cohen's Children's Hospital in New Hyde Park to deliver presents to the children. Key Club teamed up with the North Shore Chamber Orchestra to deliver presents, holiday cheer, and good music to the children of this hospital. The Chamber Orchestra played many holiday favorites like "Jingle Bells," "Sleigh Ride," and even some Hanukkah songs like "Dreidel." Prior to the delivery, the Key Club wrapped the presents that the children received as well. The children have been through a lot lately and this visit definitely relieved the stress they have experienced. Matthew Grannelli

Leading up to Calhoun High School’s Zumba Night on February 3rd, Key Clubbers woke up bright and early to sell muffins to fellow students each Thursday and Friday. What was called “Muffins in the Morning” was a huge success, setting off similar action around the school by other clubs. Students and teachers alike began expecting the muffins, and the supply always quickly sold out. The early morning service took place for two weeks in and around KPLD Week, in order to raise awareness for the crippling disease. The revenue generated from the sales is enough to cover the cost of the Zumba instructor (who will cover the hour long session), with even a small surplus which will be donated in conjunction with Zumba Night for Pediatric Lyme Disease research. Please come out to support your fellow Division 5 club on Tuesday, February 3rd for their first ever Zumba Night Fundraiser. The event will take place from 5:30pm to 6:30pm in the Sanford H. Calhoun High School gymnasium in Merrick. All proceeds will be donated to KPLD foundation. Thomas Macaluso, President

On December 7, the Voorheesville Key Club participated in selling Bells of Life at Crossgates Mall in Guilderland. Our Key Club teamed up with our Middle School Builder's Club to support the pre-natal care unit at the Albany Medical Center. It is one of our best annual events that directly makes a difference in many people's lives. In just seven hours, we raised a total of $625 through the generosity of passing shoppers. This just proves that a little kind action (like donating a dollar to the Bells of Life) can multiply to become something much more powerful. On December 4, the Voorheesville Key Club participated in the Sage Youth Leadership Character Summit at Sage College. The Sage project is focused on a new way to stop bullying in our schools, and it was brought to our attention by our Elementary School principal who then trained our participants for weeks in November before the event. On December 3, Key Club held a mandatory meeting that focused on the icebreaking skills that our members learned from the training for the Character Summit. The event was a huge success and we thank all our members who were involved as well as Dr. Reardon, our Voorheesville Elementary School principal. Every March, the Voorheesville Key Club enjoys hosting our annual March Movie Night at the Voorheesville Elementary School. Children from grades kindergarten-5th come to watch a popular kids' movie in their pajamas with their friends. Key Clubbers man the concession stand where the elementary schoolers can buy candy and popcorn and when the movie is about to start, the kids sit on blankets in the gym and watch the film. Wreck-It Ralph was played first, then Frozen the year after. With the latter movie, two students dressed up as Anna and Elsa (the main characters) and greeted elementary schoolers as they walked in the door. The Voorheesville Key Club began hosting this event two years ago and it has brought nothing but success and we have all our members and young counterparts at the Elementary School to thank.
