Editor's Note What is up Key Club? I'm Jerry and I am the current District Bulletin Editor for NYDKC! As schools continue on, I have witnessed so many events and fundraisers that happened in my very own club, division, and district. Keep up the good work! This issue was in honor of the past bulletin editors that have taken their time and effort to make amazing past Empire Key issues. This issue is a similar version of the 2014 October issue of the Empire Key! Shoutout to Sharon Lin 2014 NYDKC Bulletin Editor.

November is the Bulletin Editor Month! Be sure to spotlight all the work that your club editor has done for your club! Please feel free to email me at editor@nydkc.org if you have any inquiries about this service year. I look forward to working with everyone this year!

G o v e r n o r Hey Hey Hey NYDKC! Welcome back-to-school New York! Hopefully, the first couple of months have gone by smooth sailing for you all. Enjoying the Friday Night Lights, crushing those college apps for you seniors, and making priceless memories with all your friends. Heading back into the Key Club season, be sure to attend all of your club meetings, fundraisers, and service events. After all, serving our homes, schools, and communities is what we do best. This November, the New York District is hosting our District Fall Conference - a virtual experience like no other connecting Key Clubbers from across the state through workshops, fellowship, guest speakers, and more.

5

The Conference will be held on November 20th, and will benefit our District Project, Alex’s Lemonade Stand. The District Board has been working non-stop in order to make this experience the best one yet. Please be sure to register by 11/12 in order to save your seat for a one-of-a-kind conference! Since my last Empire Key Update, I have been working with individual Lieutenant Governors in order to help their Key Clubs have an amazing service year. Clubs have gone above and beyond already, hosting club fairs, participating in charity walks, and hosting fundraisers for our District Endorsed Projects. Check out the service spotlights later on in this newsletter to see what ideas your own club can participate in!

I hope you all stay safe this fall, and enjoy every moment. Stay amazing New York District, and let’s make this year the best one yet!

Yours in Service & Friendship, Chloe Baker 2021-22 District Governor

S e c r e t a r y Hi NYDKC! I can't believe it's already fall season! Yet we are making so many strides from the Big Apple to the borders of Canada. I’ve been working hard to make sure things are running smoothly everywhere from the big apple to the Adirondacks. So far, we have completed 64,600 hours of service - 65 percent of our goal! I want to give a huge shoutout to all the clubs that are doing their best to stay active during these crazy times. You guys have done a great job at filling out your MRFs on time but remember that late forms are always welcome!

6 7

Currently, I am working on ways to better engage clubs that are lacking events or inactive entirely. With my committee, I am planning a day of service that every school can join. I am also reaching out to inactive clubs to help them get back on track. Hopefully, we can cross that finish line together as we look towards the future. And as always, keep me posted on what adventures your club does next! Contact me if you have any questions :)

Yours in Service, Jack Lehman 2021-22 District Secretary

T r e a s u r e r Hello NYDKC! So far this service year we were able to fundraise over $47000 of our district goal of $150,000 - that is over 30%! With our district's continuous dedication to service and fundraising we will be able to meet our fundraising goal. Keep filling out those Fundraising Report Forms! It is November which means it is due season! Please try to pay dues by the Early Bird deadline which is on December 1st. Make sure to work with your advisor on how your club will be collecting dues.

E x t e r n a l Hello NYDKC! Some of you may know me by now but I'm Aaron Yu, a junior at the Bronx High School of Science and I’m your External Executive Assistant for the ‘21-’22 service year. I am looking forward to seeing more events throughout the fall season. Looking at the numbers, NYDKC has been productive all year long! Many of us are doing schoolwork and other activities, yet we still have the same Key Club spirit.

7

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I am here to be a resource to you and would be more than happy to help. I’ll always be available at treasurer@nydkc.org. That’s all for now!

Yours in Service, Siddhaarta Venkatesh 2021-22 District Treasurer

E A As Fall arrives and we look forward to the year ahead, I’ll continue to work hard in Key Club. Key Club and volunteering never stop! If anyone has any questions or concerns, I’ll always be available at aaronyu.ea@nydkc.org. Remember to always stay safe!

Yours in Care & Service, Aaron Yu 2021-22 District External EA

I n t e r n a l Hello NYDKC! Happy Fall! I hope you all had a great start to the school year. As the temperature decreases and activities such as pumpkin picking begin, Key Club stays running by bringing you new and exciting events! The District Fall Conference is coming up! The District Board has many workshops in store for you, including officer training, a guide to applying for awards, tips to balance school and your personal life, how to run more engaging meetings, and so much more! The Conference will take place virtually on Saturday, November 20. Make sure to register soon, and I hope to see you all there!

E A In preparation for the Conference, I have been reviewing the presentations that the District Board members created for their workshops. Additionally, I continue to look through and record the Lieutenant Governor paperwork as it comes in, and I plan to keep checking in with the district committees. That is my update for this issue! As always, feel free to contact me if you ever need anything!

Yours in Service Gabriella Slootsky 2021-22 District Internal EA

W e b m a s t e r Hellooooo NYDKC! It’s Anna here again! I’ve done a couple stuff since June, we had issues with the website but it is now back to working again! I have updated the board page and the mission page with a cleaner and more modern look, so you can check that out on the website if you want!

8

I have been collecting submissions of club events new york has done so far, and they have been uploaded on the instagram page. I also just started the meet the board posts yesterday, which I know a lot of people have been excited about. So don't forget to check back instagram every day to see posts!

I am close to being finished with the promotional video. I have collected all submissions, video clips, photos, and voiceovers from people of the district board, including member representatives. It is coming together so well and I am so excited to show you all the finished product!! Once the music is done for the video, we still do not have access to the youtube channel we have where the videos are uploaded.

We do have an email and password for the channel but it needed confirmation from a number in order to make the log incomplete. This is not a major issue and we will work on resolving that problem with the youtube channel. I also have tons of ideas that will need approval first, so keep tuned for that as well!

Kind Regards, Anna Belenko 2021-22 District Webmaster

SISTR ICT Hi! Aleah here from the Bahamas district. I’m a senior at Nassau Christian Schools and my favorite things to do are reading, playing softball, and going out with my friends. My small, but great district of the Bahamas is made up of hardworking key clubbers and their advisors who strive to make their home, community and schools are thriving. What we have accomplished these past months have been great despite the challenge of COVID-19. We are honored to be sister districts with New York and Pacific North West. So excited for the next webinar or any other sistrict events.

Harley Key Club Car Wash On a sunny Saturday afternoon, Harley Key Clubbers gathered outside to hold a car wash, which would be the first project of the year. There were a number of things to be done like changing out water buckets, rinsing the cars, sponging up the cars, and drying them off with towels. Many students determined that working together on different jobs, helped to keep the event run as smoothly as possible when things got busy. Many of us got a little wet, but we had tons of fun, and was a great experience! Together, the club raised a total of $1,042 in just three short hours! The club will use this money to help fund future community service projects. This was an amazing start to the service year and I cannot wait to see what else this year brings for us!

Alzheimer Awareness Walk 2021 Alzheimers is a progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. But this disease is not stopping the community from fighting against it. It's not stopping us to love, or fight for the ones we care about. Wagner Key Club did that just by volunteering and donating, changing the course of the world what Alzheimers is to the next generation. To be better prepared and spread awareness. Even if we have lost someone we cared about due to this disease, it's more than important to fund and find a cure. We started off the day at 8:30am coming and getting plans together volunteering at Cloves Lake Park on October 9, 2021. There were so many beautiful set ups, which held so much meaning to the community. For instance the promise garden, so many different colors with different meanings. Blue meaning the disease is still progressing. Orange means you are dedicated to the cause of fighting this disease and other dementia related problems. Purple means you have lost someone you cared about due to this. And yellow means you’re a caregiver and you work closely with the people there.

17

Koshy

The beginning of the ceremony many stations were set up, which attracted so much attention. After covid this relief was much needed. The promise ceremony was the most moving of them all. Everyone put their hands together and raised their flowers for the people who they cared about. Wagner helped put together most of the flowers at the garden. And all three presidents from Wagner, New Dorp, and Tottenville came together. Including our amazing Lieutenant governor Maggie. Overall, this event was a success. It was our first volunteering event and we raised 115 dollars in total. We are looking to be more active in the future about awareness going forward. Wagner stayed till the end to clean up the event even after 4 hours were granted. This is some strong dedication to our community and we are going to keep it going.

September Treasurer of the Month Janice Cao "Since the beginning of the 2021-2022 service year, Janice has been going above and beyond for every single fundraiser that we’ve held so far. Because last year was entirely virtual and extremely challenging to fundraise, there was a lot that our treasurers had to pick up in order to have a successful service year. Janice stepped up to the challenge every single time. With our first in-person movie fundraiser on July 31st, Janice took the lead and planned out the entirety of this fundraiser with Bronx Science Key Club. In the end, we raised $327.84 alone for our first in-person fundraiser! It was a huge success, but her efforts didn’t end there. At our most recent interclub in-person fundraiser, Janice had the ingenious idea of painting totes with Francis Lewis and Goldstein. Throughout the entire process, our amazing co-treasurer was actively communicating with our own exec board and the boards from other schools, even helping to purchase most of the supplies needed and taking initiative whenever possible. This fundraiser raised $207 for Kamp Kiwanis! Lastly, with our most recent Solely Tea Fundraiser, we were able to raise $205.45 for Project Happiness. On top of this, Janice has successfully led a number of Charity Miles fundraisers, from raising $862.25 for Save the Children, $868 for Malala Fund, $1294 for National Park Foundation, and $1484.25 for She's the First. Over the course of our service year, she’s currently helped to raise $5,394.70! All of the money we've raised for various charities would not have been possible without Janice's fundraising efforts." - Doris Hong (Brooklyn Technical High School Key Club President)

Brooklyn Technical High School Division 9

So far in this Service year, she helped her club raise over $5,000 for various organizations.

19

October Treasurer of the Month Christopher Facteau “Chris has worked diligently through the fall to fundraise for our Key Club, through our Snack Shack at Friday Night Football Games, and upcoming events to build our scholarship fund for our Seniors. His cheerful personality is a backbone of our club, identifying Chris as a one-of-a-kind club treasurer”. - Chloe Baker (New York District Governor)

Ticonderoga High Schoool Division 14

Over the last month, he helped his club raise over $550 for various organizations.
