"Key Club has given me the opportunity to catalyze lasting, meaningful change in a community filled with like-minded leaders who are just as passionate about volunteerism as I am." ANTONELLA LOMBARDO LT GOVERNOR DIVISION 13

Editor's Note Hi, my name is Jerry Chen, your 2021-2022 District Bulletin Editor! This is my first issue and I hope this newsletter finds you informative. I am a rising senior at the High School For Math, Science, and Engineering at the City College of New York which is part of Key Club Division 11. Outside of Key Club, I like to hang out with my friends, watch Netflix, play basketball, and join chess tournaments. My goal is to encourage Key Club members to illustrate captivating moments that happened in their home club.

This summer, I will be planning a graphic design workshop to train members about graphic design art and layout. I would like to express my gratitude to our Key Club members for serving their communities. As Covid-19 cases are declining, I encourage all Key Clubbers to be safe and committed to their home club and community.

Yours in service, Jerry Chen 2021-22 District Bulletin Editor

Please feel free to email me at editor@nydkc.org if you have any inquiries about this service year. I look forward to working with everyone this year!

G o v e r n o r Hey Hey Hey NYDKC! Welcome back to the 2021-2022 service year, or what I like to call it, the best one yet! My name is Chloe Baker, proudly serving as your District Governor for the upcoming year. Previously, I was the Lieutenant Governor for Division 14 up in the Adirondack Mountains. These past 2 years, through thick and thin, the New York District has amazed me. The leadership and service that you all perform is truly unmatched. Even amid of a global pandemic, NYDKC found ways to serve from the comfort and safety of our homes. From homemade masks to walking miles in the parks, Key Clubbers left their mark. That being said, as we move out of the COVID-19 pandemic, get ready for a year full of service, friendships, and memories.

6

In just the first two months, the New York District Board has done quite a lot. Working alongside some amazing Lieutenant Governors and Executive Officers, we have planned more opportunities for YOU - our members! After all, you all are the reason Key Club thrives. Our Service Goals and District Projects have been finalized, and ideas are flowing for what’s to come in the next quarter! As you all head into the long-awaited summer vacation, remember that service does not stop over break! There are a million and one service opportunities for your clubs to participate in, from cleaning up a park, or creating math problems for younger students. Keep an eye out for updates from your Lieutenant Governor regarding more specific ideas for your Key Club!

Moving forward, NYDKC is making strides to aide your club after the setbacks due to the pandemic, and excel into a new day. Keep doing amazing things New York District, and I cannot wait to see what’s to come.

Yours in Service & Friendship, Chloe Baker 2021-22 District Governor

S e c r e t a r y Hi NYDKC! Hope you all are doing well! I'm more than excited to have started this amazing journey with you all in Key Club. In these past two months, we have gotten off to a great start towards our goals. Currently, we have served over 23,000 hours of service! That's 23 percent of our goal in only the first two months! What really stood out to me, however, were the over 14,000 hours we served in June. In spite of AP Exams, finals, and graduation (plus a pandemic!), you all have worked so hard to serve the global community. I would like to give a shout-out to Francis Lewis High School for hitting over 5,000 hours in our first two months: incredible! As much as you’ve heard this before, this pandemic disrupted our way of life. Key clubbers thrive on human connection, which has become harder to achieve in a time of uncertainty.

7

However, both my board and the one before it did an excellent job at building a new, virtual and pandemic-friendly model for key club activities. As much as you’ve heard this before, this pandemic disrupted our way of life. Key clubbers thrive on human connection, which has become harder to achieve in a time of uncertainty. However, both my board and the one before it did an excellent job at building a new, virtual and pandemic-friendly model for key club activities. We reached our service hours goal for 2020-2021, despite starting the year off in lockdown. I believe we can use the lessons learned from the past year to build a more robust service model going forward. Even as we reopen, some clubs may find opportunities in virtual events such as charity miles or zoom fundraisers. However, nothing replaces the in-person connection that Key Club is all about. I’m looking forward to having that soon!

In the meantime, I would like to support all of you by keeping in better contact with club secretaries. I’m working to get every club to fill out the Election Report Form when they induct new officers so I can gather contact information. All of you secretaries out there should be hearing from me soon, so look out for that!

Otherwise, I wish you all a productive summer and look forward to continuing this journey with you all over this next year!

Yours in Service, Jack Lehman 2021-22 District Secretary

T r e a s u r e r Hello NYDKC! My name is Siddhaarta Venkatesh, a junior at the High School for Math, Science & Engineering at CCNY and I’m extremely excited to be serving as your District Treasurer for the 21-22 service year. I previously served as Treasurer of my home club and I will use that experience in order to make this year even better for all treasurers across the district. Our fundraising goal has been set to $150,000 and we have raised about $9,000! Keep filling out those FRFs. We can do this! At the start of the service year, I created a Treasurer’s Guide as well as an FRF guide. These resources have all the information that any club treasurer would need to know. These resources should be accessible on the NYDKC website.

8

This year, I would like to create a Treasurers’ platform in which club treasurers would be able to chat with one another to plan and advertise fundraisers as well as ask any questions they might have. Hopefully, this platform will help us fundraise more money for our district projects. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions! I’ll always be available at treasurer@nydkc.org. That’s all for now!

Yours in Service, Siddhaarta Venkatesh 2021-22 District Treasurer

Hello NYDKC! My name is Aaron Yu, a junior at the Bronx High School of Science and I’m extremely excited to be serving as your External Executive Assistant for the ‘21-’22 service year. I previously served as an executive assistant for my home division(11) which makes me even more excited to be working at the district level this year. I hope everyone enjoyed this year’s virtual LTC as we look into prospects of in-person Fall Rallies and LTC. This year, I want to emphasize the members of NYDKC and what they’re experiencing throughout these difficult times. As we all know, Key Club is a reverse pyramid so members are the most important component. The introduction of member representatives who will work together with the district board committees this year will hopefully allow us to create better experiences for everyone.

I n t e r n a l Hello NYDKC! It’s your District Internal EA, Gabriella! I cannot believe we are over two months into the service year and I cannot wait for the months to come!

9

In addition, I plan on creating a district membership survey where any Key Clubber can speak of their experiences in Key Club and what can be improved. This valuable feedback system will allow us to better know our members and improve ourselves based on this. As Summer arrives and we look forward to the year ahead, I’ll continue to work hard in Key Club. Key Club and volunteering never stop! If anyone has any questions or concerns, I’ll always be available at aaronyu.ea@nydkc.org. Remember to always stay safe!

Yours in Care & Service, Aaron Yu 2021-22 District External EA

E A A little bit about myself: I am a sophomore at Tottenville High School and I had the pleasure of serving as my home club’s treasurer last year. I am honored to serve as your Internal Executive Assistant this year! I love being part of Key Club for so many reasons.

G o v e r n o r

What I love most is that we Key Clubbers are all passionate and driven, and these are the qualities that allow us to make the impact we do.

With that in mind, I look forward to working with everyone and making this service year the best it can be!

During my term, I plan to be of great help to the Governor and all of the Lieutenant Governors to lay a smooth and organized foundation for Key Clubbers all across the state! This responsibility includes assisting with day to day tasks, maintaining communication with my fellow board members, helping to plan events like the Fall District Conference, and sharing service events with everyone in order for us to achieve our district goals.

Yours in Service Gabriella Slootsky 2021-22 District Internal EA

TRUSTEE'S FAREWELL MESSAGE

Hello New York! My name is Glory Kalu and I had the great pleasure of serving as your International Trustee for this past service year! As SLC approaches, I come to the realization that my time is coming to an end and it is a bittersweet moment for me. Serving New York and the Spacifiny Sistrict has been an amazing experience! I have connected with truly dedicated and intellectual people in all three districts and I have loved it! Despite a variety of obstacles in the way, members have persevered and still continued to serve their homes, schools, and communities. Without you guys, Key Club would have suffered, so I thank you for your work and efforts this year. I know your next trustee will appreciate what you have all accomplished as much as me!

Goldstein Key Club's Teacher Appreciation Week Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, it is clear that teachers have worked tirelessly to adapt to the new virtual learning experience and should be applauded for the outstanding work that they put into each school year. This is exactly what Goldstein’s Key Club did throughout Teacher Appreciation Week. Prior to teacher appreciation week, our Key Club asked the whole school to create posters and kind letters to their most honorable teachers which would then be presented to the staff at Goldstein through a “Staff Meeting”. Since the zoom meeting was filled to the brim with students from all grades and staff from the whole school, it was filled with both excitement and chaos. One funny moment from the meeting would be how multiple people accidentally unmuted themselves and played a variety of Tik Tok songs for our principal and teachers to hear.

16

Huang

Seeing my teachers be so understanding through remote learning and how compassionate their lesson plans were made this event so fun. Thus, this impacted me as a Key Clubber because I found it admirable that our club was able to organize such a successful school-wide event for our teachers. Hence, this inspired me to brainstorm and participate in new events that Goldstein Key Club might host in the future. Although this meeting was only momentary, it was a very special moment for both the teachers and students. Many students were able to present their warm-hearted letters to their teachers. Not only that, the sheer amount of students alone that decided to participate and dedicate their time to create posters and messages is a representation of how unified and special the community at Goldstein is.

Wantagh Key Club's Jones Beach Clean Up On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, 39 dedicated members of Wantagh Key Club came together on Jones Beach to help beautify their favorite local beach by collecting garbage off the shore and boardwalk. While following COVID safety procedures by wearing masks and gloves, members broke off into groups with their friends to cover wider ground. While enjoying the scenic view of the blue sky and crashing waves, members helped collect a total of 235 pounds of trash off the beach. These members were dedicated to committing such strong efforts for this important cause of fighting pollution because for many, Jones Beach is a staple of their childhood.

18

Rosen

Throughout the day, Key Clubbers recalled memories of building sandcastles in the hot summer air, jumping in the waves on boogie-boards with friends, and adventurously advancing through the monkey bars on the playground. Members were motivated to uphold this tradition for younger generations and gained a stronger appreciation for maintenance workers who regularly commit their time to help the community enjoy this beautiful environment. Michael Minars, Key Club co-president says it best. “Jones Beach really is a center of our community, and it’s so important to spread a sense of responsibility for public places that we enjoy.” No amount of distance will make Wantagh give up on their cause of community outreach and support!

Saving lives one blood drive at a time Not only has Lynbrook High School’s Key Club raised thousands of dollars this year for charitable organizations, but it has also saved lives! Despite changes to its annual blood drive due to coronavirus restrictions, the club was able to surpass its original goal. This school year, over 217 pints of blood were donated to help people in need. This past weekend on Saturday, May 1, students from Lynbrook High School and the rest of the Lynbrook community came to the high school and, in total, donated 82 pints of blood. This number shows the determined, hardworking spirit of this year’s Key Club: “This year has been all about going with the flow and doing our best to make a difference, and I am really happy with the impact Key Club has been able to have in the community and for people in need,” incoming Key Club President and LHS junior Emma Ward explained. Dr. Benedict Tieniber, Key Club Advisor, stated, “It was great to be back at the high school holding this event again. I am extremely proud of this group.”

-Sophie Ward [Division 7]

20

Dedicated club member and LHS senior, Leo Finkelstein, graciously donated blood because “he could,” adding that the whole process was “very quick and easy.” He went further to explain why he donated blood: “I am happy that I can help the current blood shortage. Knowing that I made a difference in someone’s life gives me great joy!” Along with many members donating blood, countless other Key Club members came to the blood drive to volunteer. Additionally, a large group of members had family members or friends donate along with them, or for them if they did not qualify or were underaged. Incoming Key Club Social Media Manager and LHS junior Abigail Almonte felt “incredibly humbled and thrilled” that she was able to donate blood. She further stated: “It’s amazing how a casual 20-minute donation can make such a huge impact on someone else’s life. I am eager to keep donating.” This spirit is felt throughout the Lynbrook community as the blood drive is one of Key Club’s annual major events. Key Club is already excited for next year’s blood drive and the members and community cannot wait to continue to make such a huge difference in so many lives!

THHS Key Club AAPI Game Night Fundraiser Since the start of COVID-19, there has been a rise in hate incidents against Asians and Asian Americans on a national scale. The funds raised from the AAPI Game Night Fundraiser went towards Send Chinatown Love, which aims to create a digital community for Chinatown’s restaurants to sustain themselves during the pandemic and beyond. Accumulating over $150, not only did Townsend Harris Key Club foster better allyship with local AAPI communities, but also build stronger connections with Key Clubbers. With a wide range of games from Jackbox to Gartic Telephone, attendees had the opportunity to chat and form cherishable memories of an unforgettable night. A fellow sophomore, Bonnie Chen, reflected on the fundraiser saying “I participated in Jackbox and Among Us, both of which were extremely fun because we were able to discuss and laugh with each other. If we have a chance to attend these game night fundraisers in the future, I would definitely recommend this event to other Key Clubbers because not only are we supporting a relevant and pressing cause, we are also able to build a stronger community within Key Club.”

22

Being a part of the Events Planning Committee, I was privileged to assist in facilitating the fundraiser and it was extremely heartwarming to see so many members gather in voice chats to uphold Send Chinatown Love. Co-Leader of the Events Planning Committee, Rusayla Hasan states “many of them (Key Clubbers) did not know each other before and were from different grades, but they had a lot of time and were able to collaborate on many games. It reminded me how much I appreciate the friendliness of the Key Club community.” Being an Asian American myself, the AAPI Game Night Fundraiser opened my eyes to the countless positive impacts Key Club continuously cultivates in our world.
