Editor's Note Hi everyone! Fahad here. If you didn't know, I'm serving as your 2018-19 District Bulletin Editor! I’m a junior at the Bronx High School of Science and have served as my club's Bulletin Editor and Webmaster for the 2017-18 service year. Over the past few months, I've released the first edition of The Empire Key (Summer Edition) and have worked personally with each Lieutenant Governor to ensure that members remain updated on everything that's going on in Key Club on the District and International level. I've placed a greater focus on service spotlights and resources that Key Club members find helpful and useful such as the YOF and Kiwanis-

4

Sponsored scholarships. As we're nearing the halfway mark of the service year, I encourage all of you to put yourself out there and meet other Key Clubbers around your respective divisions! Push yourself to attend your first service events, your first fundraiser, or even your first divisional. It's never too late to join Key Club or serve your communities, so be sure to step up and make a difference! If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me through email, text, or even Facebook Messenger!

Each district committee is in charge of specific branches related to bettering the NY District as a whole.

Awards The Awards Committee has been hard at work updating the Awards Booklet. It is almost complete, and once it is, we will notify all the LTGs. We really hope you apply for awards! There are a lot, including the newly created Treasurer's Award. Don't be intimidated by other clubs who tend to win a lot of awards - you have a great chance of winning as well, as long as you apply! There's no harm in applying, and if you don't fulfill the requirements for an award, feel free to reach out to Mara Yella, Anson Zhou, or awards@nydkc.org. We can't wait to see you all at LTC!

Endorsed Projects The Endorsed Project Committee is working closely to help our partnered charities, and currently creating short informational videos on each one. Endorsed Projects include Comfort Cases, One Tree Planted, Kamp Kiwanis, Kiwanis Lyme Disease Foundation, and Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center. Additionally, the Committee is planning to make apparel for some projects to help fundraise.

Events Engagement The Events Engagement Committee has been working to help every region with their respective Fall Rally. Regardless of where you’re from in New York District, there is a Fall Rally for you. Every Fall Rally has happened so far except Western New York, (Division’s 23,25-27) but I hope your experience was fantastic. We are now transitioning towards planning LTC and any other interdivisional events. If you have any comments about Fall Rally, suggestions for events, or questions, feel free to contact the Events Engagement Committee Chairs (Peter Alegre & Anthony Guan).

K-Family Relations The Kiwanis Family Relations Committee is in the process of creating a promotional video about all the branches of the Kiwanis Family. Currently, Natalie Vinton, the chair of the committee, is assigning each member of the committee a Kiwanis , Circle K, and Builders Club/K-kids club to visit. At these visits, we are going to talk about Key Club and ask how Key Clubbers can help each of these clubs. We are also discussing ways to develop a more personal/unified relationship with Key Club International.

Membership and Growth The Membership Growth and Development Committees has recently been contacting clubs and seeing how they are doing to find out if they need help. We have also made a chant, mainly to help students get into the Key Club spirit. In December, we will begin working on promoting dues submission throughout the district as well as building up the weaker clubs throughout NY. By the end of the year, our goal is to increase the number of chartered clubs and to increase the number of members!

Light the Night Article By Megan Ngo, Division 11

Hundreds of lanterns--colored red, yellow, and white-glowed brightly in the night sky as participants showed their support for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Light the Night is an annual event for Key Clubs all across the city. Members gather in Corona Park by the hundreds. For most, it's their first Key Club event! We walk the length of the park with our lanterns held high, joining the rest of the city in a tribute for those fighting cancer. Scheduled perfectly at the beginning of the school year, it has the highest new member turnout amongst any Key Club event we have. Underclassmen enjoyed the excitement of the unfamiliar with their friends, upperclassmen reminisced with old pals about their last few years. More than anything, however, you can see the entire club come together.

18

"A memorable yet exciting event" Quote by Aaron Wu Division 11

As a senior, I've seen my club grow since my freshman year. I've seen new faces come every year, but no matter what I'll always be able to see the same smile and enthusiasm for service. Whether it's your first year or your last, Light the Night is an experience you can't miss.

Slice Out Hunger Article By Akaneh Wang, Division 11 On Wednesday, October 10th, I went to Slice Out Hunger's Pizza Party event. The organization behind the event, Slice Out Hunger, held it in order to raise money to fight hunger and provide food for the hungry. At first, I was doubtful about going because of the sheer amount of work I had to do that was due the next day. However, I decided to go anyway. The event was after school, so I took the train to Soho and walked to the Shrine Church of St Anthony and Paula, where it was being held. When I arrived, there was already a long line of people wrapping around the block. Many cars lined the cobblestone street, with some volunteers already helping to unload stacks of cardboard boxes. The air was filled with the distinctive aroma of a variety of different pizza's and along with it,

a slight hint of basil, rosemary, and red pepper. I went inside the church, signed into the volunteer station, picked up a shirt and went to go look for other volunteers. I joined Wesley, Waly and Daniel (Fellow Key Clubbers) outside the church, where we waited for delivery cars and helped unpack the pizza from the cars to each of their respective booths stationed in the church. After the pizzas were unloaded, we stood at the guest entrance of the church and folded pizza boxes to hand out to the attendees of the Pizza Party. As guests started to pour in, we handed out box after box while chatting with each other as well as the occasional attendees. Everyone was really nice, and the volunteers also got to eat some pizza afterwards. Later that day, even though I had a mountain of homework to finish, I got home smiling. I miraculously finished my homework by 12 and slept, satisfied. I learned that helping others helped myself, too.

Slice Out Hunger supports local hunger relief organizations & initiatives through the American pizza community! 19

NORTH SHORE'S SPLASH INTO SERVICE

North Shore Key Club's Car Wash The North Shore key Club was in full force and held their first fundraiser for the new service year at North Shore High School. The funds from this annual fundraiser car wash, will be donated to various charities throughout the service year. Pictured are the members in action having some fun while making a difference!

LONG ISLAND NORTH K FAMILY DINNER The annual K-Family dinner hosted by Long Island's North Division was held on Wednesday November 7th at the Sea Cliff Manor. All NY District Administrators from Youth Service Organizations attended as well as the Youth Service Clubs sponsored by the Division. There were 81 attendees who attended this “Gala Affair” with smiles galore as they took the microphone and shined in the spotlight (Pictured on the Top Right).

5K STRIDES FOR THE CURE On Sunday October 21, we joined thousands of others at Jones Beach for the annual 5K fundraiser, “Making Strides For the Cure For Breast Cancer.” Although the weather was very cold, our Key Clubbers had warm hearts as they walked the board. Pictured below are the members who took part in this event!

WESTHAMPTON BEACH'S MILES FOR MYELOMA Start of a Tradition WRITTEN BY DOMINIC BOSSEY DIVISION 1

On Saturday September 15, 2018, Tori Cummins, the President of WHB Key Club organized and held the first annual WHB Miles for Myeloma at her high school. This event was a 5k walk/run around the track to raise money for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. This foundation helped her dad fight Multiple Myeloma for 6 years after his diagnosis. The Miles for Myeloma event had lots of festivities. There was complementary food and drinks, a DJ, T-shirts being sold, a silent auction, and an award ceremony before and after the race. There were over 150 participants and Tori was able to raise $16,544 from registration, t-shirts, donations and sponsors. In Tori’s perspective, she thought that this event had a huge impact on cancer research

22

as well as on the community. This was the first Multiple Myeloma event in the Westhampton Beach area, so it was the first time that people could come together in Westhampton to support a great cause. Additionally, it gave families of Multiple Myeloma patients in the area a place to come together and meet other families to support each other through their hard times. For Tori, it was a very emotional day. Seeing all of her friends, family

and other community members come together to support her with this event was incredible. “It was the best day of my life” says Tori. Being able to raise this much for the cancer her dad had was so close to her heart and really was a life changing experience. She would like to thank everyone that supported her with the first WHB Miles for Myeloma, she said she couldn’t have done it without them. This event was a huge success, and Tori can’t wait for the 2nd annual WHB Miles for Myeloma next year!

Recap: Long Island's Fall Rally Article by Anson Zhou, Division 2

LI's Fall Rally On October 21st, 2018, the Key Clubs of Long Island held their annual Fall Rally convention. This event encompassed divisions 1 through 7 and had over 100 attendees. The Key Club members spent the day at Long Island University Post in Long Island, and actively

attended a series of workshops including sessions on carrying out officer duties, running clubs, and some fun games like making dog toys. Hoping to have everyone make some new friends, all the participants were broken into small groups to participate in icebreakers. Within just a few minutes,

everyone was laughing and even better, interacting with students outside of their home clubs. Besides all the workshops and activities, we had the distinct pleasure of hearing Mr. Robert Scheer speak. He is the founder of “Comfort Cases”, this year’s Governor’s Project.

"It's important to realize that inspiring others has the power to drive positive impact" Going from describing how his youth pushed him towards this mission to how we as young people can change the world, his powerful words inspired all the members in the audience. At the end of the day, Long Island Key Clubs were happy to raise over $700 for “Comfort Cases through the selling of special Long Island Key Club shirts and student contributions.

Fall Rallys attract hundreds of Key Clubbers from around different regions of New York. They serve to inspire, teach, and train future leaders in our communities.

District Project ONE TREE PLANTED

For every dollar donated, One Tree Planted pledges to plant one tree. One Tree Planted is a non-profit organization that aims to tackle deforestation and environmental destruction by planting trees, one at a time. This organization plants trees in North America, South America, Asia, and Africa. Many of the regions where they plant trees are places that have suffered forest fires and floods. In the process, One Tree Planted has a greater impact as well; they're able to create jobs, build communities, and protect habitats all over the world.

Fundraising Goal: $6,000.00

Governor's Project COMFORT CASES Comfort Cases is an organization that strives to provide backpacks with daily essentials to children in the foster care system. Their inspiration comes from the belief that every child deserves to feel a sense of dignity - which comes from the fact that a foster child is able to call a special bag his own. With this in mind, the charity provides daily essentials such as lotion, books, pencils, pajamas, toothpaste, soap, stuffed animals, and more to foster youth around the United States.

Fundraising Goal: $5,000.00 28
