Important Words: A Letter from the Secretary and Treasurer Hello New York District, My name is Daniel Ivan Lin and I am currently serving as your district secretary. This service year has been a year of great success in terms of paperwork. This year, in order to ensure that submissions were received, a Monthly Report Form with a new interface was made. A new, clean receipt was also made to improve the keeping of records for club secretaries this year. In addition, to making the Election Report Form more accessible and easy to fill out, I have made an online Election Report Form. This new report form is based off of the same interface as the newly designed Monthly Report Form and will also provide an electronic copy for the club secretary to keep. This year, Monthly Report Form submission during the summer dramatically increased, which is an amazing accomplishment. Because of this year's new report forms, we were able to credit more clubs for the service they completed during the summer. Report form submission increased as the service year came through and it was amazing to read about all the great service being completed throughout the district! I hope that in the service year to come, that we will have an even greater amount of report forms submitted, because there is always room for improvement! Stay strong, New York District! Hello mighty New York District! As you all know there are resources and a PowerPoint to guide you through the process so, you will never be alone. You can find if your club has submitted dues on the Dues Spreadsheet, http://bit.ly/NYDKCtreas-dues. The sheet is for when international updates their dues. This processing process takes a couple weeks, be patient, and once you send the two envelopes, relax! We have completed our goal of 100!!!! To reach 100 already is an amazing feat and it truly shows how meritorious our treasurers are! Lets not stop there, your club garners credit for your fundraising through the FRFs, and who doesn’t want credit? Some uses for them are; our district committees use the totals from the FRFs for their fundraising goals. You see they aren’t just an inane time waster! Check out the spreadsheet to see if your club is missing any proof, http://bit.ly/NYDKCtreas-dues. Keep filling them out and we may just have to set a new goal before LTC. International Projects and Programs With the year coming to a close so quickly I ask for help. I ask for help from every club in the Mighty New York District to assist the International Projects and Programs Committee reach our goals. To remind you of the goals they are: UNICEF $20,000 and 15,000 service hours, March of Dimes $10,000 and 7,000 service hours, and Children’s Miracle Network $10,000 and 7,000 service hours. The current standings are approximately (depending on the publication of the Empire Key) are: UNICEF $7,086 and 449.25 service hours, March of Dimes $3945 and 882 service hours, and Children’s Miracle Network $2,385 and 0 service hours. Our committee, composed of Emily Gonthier, Nickolas Boroda, Nicole Jones and Marcus Mosley and I, truly believes that we can still reach our goals. The totals have been piling up throughout the year. Just a short while ago we were nowhere close to where we are now. Then, after a sudden burst of monthly report forms and fundraising report forms the totals climbed to where they are now. Please continue this trend of service and fundraising. If you ever have any questions don’t hesitate to ask.
The International Projects and Programs Committee has been very busy planning for our end of the year push. We have taken our end of the year objectives from Governor Domenick in stride. Did you know that New York State earned a “C” on their prematurity report card from March of Dimes? Did you know that for just 25 cents, 10 children can drink clean water for a day? Or better yet for $500 a village or school can get a water pump? Did you know that on average 411 babies are born with birth defects in the United States a day? Each of these organizations does miraculous services every day all of them in the name of children around the world, foreign and domestic. March of Dimes educates women about how to better their chances of having full term pregnancies. Their goal is to reduce the amount of premature babies and babies born with birth defects. Children’s Miracle Network funds life saving research for children as well as help pay for medical bills for children. UNICEF helps educate, feed, protect and just better the lives of children all over the world. In my mind Key Club is about helping others yes, but in my opinion it is especially about helping the youth, particularly children who cannot help themselves. That is what the International Service Programs are all about, the betterment of children’s lives. I think that our service partners really deserve our help and our committee really wants to help you, help them, to help children. Stacia Tauscher once said “We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today.” Well let’s help children today! New Club Building & Reactivation and KPTC Attention Mighty Key Clubbers, My name is Carla Pacheco; I am one of the 28 Lieutenant Governors of the New York District Key Club Board and currently the Committee Chair for the New Club Building and Reactivation Committee. The New Club Building and Reactivation Committee also known as NCBR, is in charge of encouraging, providing resources as well as providing answers in regards to Club Charters and Reactivations. The NCBR consists of three other lieutenant governors: Katie Coley, Andrew Abbey and Bryan Comanici. Our goals for the 2011-2012 Key Club service year are the following: Decreasing the number of Inactive & Suspended Clubs Increasing the number of Club Charters & Reactivations Providing Resources/ Publications that will make the Charter & Reactivation Process much easier Encouraging the Charter or Co-sponsorship of K-Kids as well as Builders Clubs throughout the State Working with the K-Family Committee to increase communication within the Kiwanis Family We have teamed up with the Kiwanis Family Relations Committee, in order to produce a recruitment video through the use of ocular attractive graphics for the following branches: K-Kids, Builders Club and Key Club! Our video/slideshow will include various pictures, captions, quotations as well as direct statements from the members of the targeted branch. Taking a Step Back Into the Past: Key Clubbers at Your Service This year, Martin Luther Key Club hosted two packing parties. One month before the packing party we announced to the whole school that we were going to take part in this project. Anybody was welcomed to bring in small appropriate gifts. Some of the gift ideas included toys, hygiene items, school supplies, candy, and clothes. People who packed gifts could bring a note and a picture of themselves so the child could know who packed their shoebox. We also needed wrapping paper and shoeboxes to wrap the gifts. We sorted out the gifts that we received into categories: school supplies, toys, and basic necessities. From there, we put something from every category into each box. Between the two packing parties, more gifts came in. During this three-hour event, we finished packing and wrapping all the shoe boxes. Some of us stayed after wrapping the shoe boxes to write notes for some children. At the end of the packing party, we ended up with 22 fully wrapped and packed shoe boxes.

This project was a successful one. A student who donated $105 for 15 boxes! The others were donated by other key clubbers and teachers.
JDRF Walk This event was about the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This event was a message to tell people that diabetes is a serious thing. Diabetes is at the top when it comes to how many people are being affected by it. This year, the walk took place in Flushing Meadows Park. Many clubs from other schools had come to the event. I saw many tents selling items to raise money for the foundation. I felt special that day actually because I felt like I was making a change and helping this foundation reach its goal to find a cure and help its patient. I feel like not only me, but everyone that was there, made an impact and a statement that diabetes is something not to be taken granted for. Overall, this was a successful event. Bryant Key Club helped raise money to support the foundation by giving people sneakers to sell if they signed up. The sneakers idea was a successful idea because many of them signed up for it. Some of our former members, now in college, returned such as: Steven Lai to join Bryant Key Club in this walk. The walk was a bit short this year but after the walk was the main event. Many people from the Key Club danced their heart out when it came to the dance session. Also for everyone who attended had a free pass to enter the zoo! Overall this event was a huge accomplishment and everyone had a great time!

Recently on Saturday morning, quite a bunch of Key Club Members from Bayside High School Key Club, Cardozo High School Key Club and Aviation High School Key Club participated in an event at Bayside High School called the KPTC Safe Kids Workshop. The Safe Kids program is coordinated by the PTC Service Leadership Committee and is intended to teach us high school students just how to present safety conditions to elementary school students. In a matter of time, the Key Clubbers were separated into groups where they each learned about different safety conditions and how to perform duties correctly. Pumped up and excited, each group would participate in the safety lesson and teach back the lesson! The Key Clubbers have really experienced something different; they had this opportunity to learn more for themselves and also to participate in such activities they have never experienced before.

Breast Cancer Walk The Breast Cancer Walk of 2010 was my first Key Club event ever. Thus, this year, when I met up with my fellow members, a feeling of excitement and nostalgia built up inside of me. About sixty and more of our members had shown to support the cause. After signing up, all of us gathered around with other key clubs from our division and fooled around while waiting for the walk. I surrounded myself with my officers and new members and talked animatedly about last year’s walk. We all bought ribbons and buttons to match our support. The walk was exhilarating. Hundreds of men and women in different shades of pink walked together to create more birthdays. Bryant Key Club was one of the loudest. My fellow classmates cheered, danced, and sang while walking down the pavements of Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Seeing all of us conjoined together in brilliant, aesthetic shades of pink made my heart flutter in pride. As a senior member and officer, I am rest assured that my members will continue to walk for breast cancer even after my time is done. - Mahenoor Baig

Taking a Step Back Into the Past: Key Clubbers at Service
Division 6 has truly lived up to our service leadership legacy so far this year. Starting the school year off strong with a number of walkathons, Divisionals, trick-or-treating for Unicef, food drives, and a 9/11 National Day of Service, D6 Key Clubbers have enjoyed serving our homes, schools, and community while making new friendships and strengthening our division’s bond. Along with Divisions 4, 5, and 7 this October, Division 6 had a great turnout at our annual Fall Rally where we raised money for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and the Christian Appalachian Project, as well as created Make a Child Smile Cards for terminally ill children. We did not forget those in need this holiday season and have been very busy coming together to serve our community to make the season merry and bright for the less fortunate. Clubs have held numerable projects including not only food drives but also coats drives and toy drives. Governor Domenick’s home club East Meadow worked hard to serve hundreds of senior citizens at their annual Thanksgiving Dinner. We’ve also spent many hours bell-ringing for the Salvation Army and even helped out at Nassau University Medical Center where we set up for and volunteered at the hospital’s annual children’s holiday party. D6 has been working closely with other members of our K-Family. We have been helping the West Hempstead Court Aktion Club with many projects including a Community Cleanup. We also supported Circle K by attending a Murder Mystery dinner for Eliminate. In addition, D6 Key Clubbers had fun tagging along with the Bowling Green K-Kids to “Karol” for KPTC because as Buddy the Elf once said, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”

ING Marathon- New York- Volunteering! The ING Marathon was impressive because it was my first marathon that I had ever witnessed. There were a lot of athletic runners that were running the five boroughs of New York. I saw people encouraging them to keep going and it felt awesome. I gave about thirty and more cups of water to the runners to help them keep up their pace and not lose stamina. The marathon was very cool because many runners also wore costumes. The marathon lasted for a long time. I kept wondering how the runners were able to keep up their remarkable performance, and felt very awed by them. The marathon was a success, and by the end, it felt like a parade with all the noises. I am glad I was able to volunteer in the marathon for the runners that needed support of the volunteers. I would be glad to help out others when they need it. - Kenneth Contreras
Division 8A: William Cullen Bryant High School
UNICEF If you didn’t know already, UNICEF stands for United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. This foundation was created in 1946 in order to assist and cure children who had suffered the effects of war. Up till today, UNICEF has save more lives of children than any other organization, but they didn’t solely work independently, they had the help of the people and government. Last year, Bayside High School Key Club raised $4000 for UNICEF, and as a result, we were more than happy to have been able to raise such an abundant amount of money, but also shave Stanley’s (our former president) hair off. This year, our club began to distribute orange Trick-o-Treat UNICEF boxes to the key clubbers during the month of October. Recently we had counted our donations and unfortunately, we weren’t able to raise as much money as last year. But, we were definitely glad to still be able to receive $3000. And to live up to the tradition, our current Secretary agreed to shave off his hair as well. Salutations to you, Stanley.
Division 8: Bayside High school
St. Judes Walk The St. Jude walk was awesome event because I got to walk a bridge going to Manhattan for the first time. It was interesting experience because I also got to take nice pictures of the Statue of Liberty from the bridge. The walk was fun to explore and seeing all the people supporting the St.Judes walk was incredible. The walk was cool, seeing people cheering the walkers from the start to the finish line. Key Club members received cool t-shirts to walk around in. I felt happy that I was able to explore different places that I never been to and it is good to learn something new. The things I like about St.Judes are that they never stop looking for cures and truly support the children. The walk is worth it, supporting the children who need our strength in staying healthy and safe. I always watch commercials of St.Judes, which show children that look sick and have cancer. I feel sorry for these kids and I wish the best for all, but I know by walking we helped to make a difference. - Kenneth Contreras

Taking a Step Back Into the Past: Fall Rally
Division 4, 5, 6, 7’s Fall Rally in Long Island
Division 8, 8A, 9, 10, 11 (Metropolitan) Fall Rally
Metropolitan Fall Rally On October 29, 2011 the annual Fall Rally took place. This year it was held at the beautiful Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn. Despite having to wake up early, walk in the freezing winds and trudge through the snow, the event was extremely productive. Due to the weather, we had about twelve Key Clubbers in attendance. The day started with continuous, informative workshops such as President/Vice President, Secretary, Treasuries, Members, etc. The second workshop I attended was very fun and interactive. It was the Fundraising Ideas/ Service Projects. We were placed in different groups in order to break the ice between the attendees. The next workshop I partook in was Project EliMiNaTe, were we learned more about the importance and significance of maternal/neonatal tetanus and its impact. Above all, it only takes .60 cents to provide a vaccination for a newborn baby or a mother. After the very touching workshop, we had lunch. We were provided with unlimited pizza and drinks, which was defrayed from the $10 admissions fee. The last workshop was our very own Lt. Carla Pacheco’s that dealt with various ice breaker ideas. Bryant Key Club immensely enjoyed this event, from the human knot, to hugging random people, which brought the day to an end. This event was a crucial event for members interested in running for higher office, to gain insight about their upcoming duties and garner more information as to be a better, competent leader. The Fall Rally was indeed a great success.
I hope things have been running smoothly thus far. It is almost the end of my term as Lt. Governor and I would like to take this time and thank everyone who has helped fortify and expand Key Club Division 10. I would like to thank all the club presidents and officers who have complied and cooperated with New York District requests and also my suggestions on how to increase membership in their clubs, create efficient fundraisers and making sure that their efforts are recorded and submitted to NYDKC. I would also like to thank Kiwanis members, Leonard Gioia and Sean O’Sullivan, who have tirelessly offered counsel and support to our club members and our service projects. This year’s Fall Rally was a blast! I am so proud of the Key Club members from Division 10 that attended despite the snow. It was very successful and I hope you guys had a good time and enjoyed the presentations of our guest speakers. I hope this New Year will bring more opportunities for growth, friendship, and fun! Taking a Step Back Into the Past: The Governor’s Project
Music and Arts, Within Our Hearts – Division 9’s Brooklyn Tech Edition: Mural Painting Event By: Sisi Peng “May you pass the red paint?” “Oh no, can someone refill the yellow paint? We ran out!” “Be careful of the details, use a thinner paintbrush for this section.” Stepping into the Mural Painting Event for the Governor’s Project, a Key Clubber may overhear snippets of conversations like the ones before. Members were able to release their inner creativity and utilize their best judgment to create wonderful pieces of artwork for a local hospital or recreational center. As I walked around helping out different groups, I saw Key Clubbers actively sharing supplies and even personal stories, ranging from funny jokes from fellow classmates to occasional complaints about the crowded school hallways. At this event, members were able to serve the community while having fun and meeting new people. Together we completed six large murals in the hopes of lifting someone else’s spirits and put a smile on their face. Sharing is caring and caring is, without a doubt, our way of life.

The Leadership Training Conference Pg.3 Hello Mighty New York District, I would like to welcome you to the registration page for our 2012 Leadership Training Conference! Each year New York District holds our Leadership Training Conference, or LTC, as a chance for Key Clubbers to meet, learn, and collaborate, in the spirit of community and service. Like last year, LTC will be located at the Holiday Inn at Albany, New York. This years Superhero themed LTC will take place from March 30th to April 1st. Join us on a weekend full with workshops, elections, dances, a talent show, entertainment, and great opportunities to meet and socialize with Key Club members from all over the state! I encourage you all be there to usher in a new service year, as well as run for District or International office and even share a vote in determining the new District Board and International Nominees. Leadership Training Conference is an unforgettable chance to learn about Key Club and the Kiwanis Family, have fun, but most importantly, celebrate the values of service that we all aspire to! If anyone has any questions about Convention at all, please feel free to contact District Administrator John Goldstein or I. Begin to strongly consider convention and be sure to sign up early because space is limited. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing many of you there! Remember to submit all forms on time like the LTG Evaluation Forms, MRF’s, and Club Status Reports. A Club is still required to submit a Monthly Report Form even if they did not have any service projects that month. Always submit an Fundraising Report Form (FRF) after each Fundraising event held. Remember that Service Spotlights are highly urged and they can we used as part of service for MRF forms as well. Club spotlights may earn the recognition to be starred on the NYDKC website so write an article after each successful event attended. Stay in touch with your sponsoring Kiwanis.
