governor's update Happy Fall, NYDKC! I hope school is treating you well. Thankfully, as school begins, so do Key Club meetings! As we are in our first few weeks of school, it is imperative that we get the Key Club name out. "Key Club? What do you guys do — make keys?" We've all heard this misconception millions of times. Right now is the perfect opportunity to clear that up. Get your meeting room and period in the school announcements! Reach out to freshmen and sophomores at club fairs! Membership recruitment is especially important at this time of the year, when underclassmen are still deciding which clubs they want to join. Now that September is over, we’re also approaching Halloween. Every year, Key Club partners with UNICEF in a world-wide initiative called Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, where Key Clubbers fundraise to treat maternal neonatal tetanus. If you haven’t already, you can order boxes (free of charge!) on their website. I wish you all the best of luck at your Key Club meetings. Remember, we’re all family here, and with family comes inclusiveness. At your next meeting, strike up a conversation with that freshman sitting alone. TREASURER'S UPDATE Hey NYDKC, I hope everyone is having a great beginning to the school year! We are currently more than halfway through this year’s service year and have raised $40,027.66 (26.685%) out of our $150,000 goal. This is half of where we should be. But, with school back in session and fundraisers starting again, I have seen an increase in Fundraising Report Forms being submitted which is growing our goal everyday! Make sure to continue submitting your FRFs so that all your club’s hard work can be accounted for! As for the Endorsed Projects fundraising goals, we are doing an amazing job! We have raised $3,544.00 of our $5,000 goal for Sunrise Day Camp, $1,056.00 of our $5,000 goals for The Honeybee Conservancy, and $624.00 of our $200 goals for the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center. We have raised $0 for both Kamp Kiwanis and Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation, so these are two great options to fundraise for! Remember, early bird dues are due on November 1st and the regular dues submission deadline is December 1st. Dues are $13 this year. webmaster's update Hello NYDKC, I'm pretty pumped for the start of this school year. It's great to be able to get our home clubs back in full swing. On the webmaster front, I took a breather from the main page to make a new LTC site. I am currently waiting on event information to finish the update. There is also a new front page (for the main site) in the pipeline, pending formal approval and art assets. With regard to the awards committee, we are very close to having an updated booklet completed and there is a revamped digital awards submission process in the works. assistant's update Hey NYDKC, There has been a lot going on since the start of the service year! I've held multiple meetings with all of your Lieutenant Governors to help them organize your Fall Rallies. The dates and locations of these Fall Rallies will be released within this week. I hope that you will attend a Fall Rally to learn more about the workings of Key Club as well as grow as a leader and continue to serve your homes, schools and communities. I have also been working with Governor Gavin and the Events Engagement Committee on LTC. We recorded our LTC promo video at the September Board Meeting so be on the lookout for that! secretary's update Hello NYDKC! We are already halfway through our service year! We currently have 36,500 service hours, but that is not enough for us Key Clubbers. We want more! Make this month your best month yet by participating in October traditions like Trick or Treat Street and UNICEF boxes. Some other ideas can be a pumpkin carving contest to raise money, a costume drive, or halloween crafts that can spread the fun. We still have to reach over 50% of our service goal. Therefore continue serving your community and do not forget to document it in your monthly report form. editor's update Hi! I know it's an extremely busy time for everyone, but it's also an extremely important time in Key Club. Make sure you're promoting your club to the best of your ability! I will be releasing monthly newsletters until the end of this service year, so look forward to those. There are some entertaining tidbits in this newsletter, including inspirational videos that you can watch in your free time, so check those out! I am planning on implementing a Member of the Month section within the next few newsletters, and hopefully this tradition will be sustained by the next editor. committee updates Membership Growth and Development The Membership Growth and Development Committee has been working on contacting clubs on the Suspended Club list to see if the advisors would consider reactivating their club. Each person was also assigned a topic related to our committee's objectives and goals and was to create a Powerpoint Presentation or Infographic to be shared in a public Google Drive to be used by the whole District. - Erica Swirsky
Kiwanis Family Relations Hi, my name is Trisha Melton and I am the committee chair for the Kiwanis Family Relations committee. My committee members and I have been working to promote the importance of the Kiwanis Family Relationship. Look for posters you can hang in your school or create short videos that explain why members should involve their local Kiwanis family. We have also been looking to match unsponsored Key Clubs with a supporting Kiwanis club. Â We are also trying to encourage Circle K to attend our Fall Rallies. - Trisha Melton
Endorsed Projects As many of you may know, each service year, NYDKC has a total of 5 endorsed projects: three Kiwanis projects, one Governor’s project, and one project proposed by Lieutenant Governors and voted on by you, the district! So far, we are doing a great job at meeting our goals for some of the projects! Kiwanis Endorsed Projects - Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center: $1,374 out of our $200 goal (687%) - Kamp Kiwanis: $0 out of our $1,500 goal (0%) - Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation: $0 out of our $300 goal (0%) Governor’s Project - The Honeybee Conservancy: $1,099 out of our $5,000 goal (21.98%) LTG Proposed Project - Sunrise Day Camp: $3,544.66 out of our $5,000 goal (70.89%) If your club is thinking about raising funds for one of the endorsed projects, though they are all amazing causes, you may want to consider Kamp Kiwanis or Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation since these two have zero funds raised so far. Service Spotlights On September 23rd, Brighton Key Club held a car wash in the parking lot of Brighton High School. The members collaborated to wash the cars of people in the community in order to raise money for several Key Club members to attend the Leadership Training Conference this March. Although it was very hot out that day, everyone was able to pool their efforts to do the best they could. Some members held signs outside the school, while others collected donations and helped with washing and drying the cars. It was a fun and heartwarming day, and the fundraiser was very successful. It was super memorable, and I'm glad I got to spend time with other Key Club members while raising money for a worthy cause.

The opening days of Key Club were like a breath of fresh air, seeing all of the new prospective Key Club members. Through our intense effort in advertising the club, we were able to aggregate well over 60 people to hear all about the wonderful work we do as a club. Seeing old and new members this year gave me a sense of worth that no other club has given me these past four years and I am glad to be back. I am ready to see what this year will hold for us and look forward to changing the world one service project at a time!

SERVICE SPOTLIGHT
end of summer fundraiser Michele chen, division 11 On September 5th, 2017, Stuyvesant and Bronx Science held an End of Summer Fundraiser in order to end summer 2017 on a high note. The service this summer was filled with interclubbing, making new friends, laughter, good food, and most of all, pool. What better way to end it than with the people we served with and with a couple games of pool? To our surprise, there were A LOT of people that signed up. I never would have expected to see such a large turnout for a fundraiser, especially one so close to the upcoming school year. People from Division 8, 9, and 11 were all present. During the fundraiser we played two rounds of bowling, served pizza and bubble tea, held a raffle, and ended the fundraiser with a couple games of pool. There was a large range skill levels for both activities, and the great thing about Key Club is that you’re surrounded by people who aren’t going to laugh at your lack of skill. If you suck at pool (aka me), there are going to be people who are there to tell that it’s okay if you got a scratch. I had a lot of fun at the fundraiser, and despite how disorganized it was in the beginning I hope everyone enjoyed the fundraiser too. Thank you so much to everyone who came. The fundraiser would not have nearly been as successful and as enjoyable as it was if you weren’t there. ❤ In addition to celebrating a service filled summer, we held the fundraiser in order to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas. As Key Clubbers, or really just as good people, it was natural that we felt like we needed to do something even though we weren’t physically in Texas. We did what we know how to do and held a fundraiser to raise money for the Kiwanis Funds for Children who were helping victims affected by the hurricane. We decided to donate to the organization because we trust that all of our donations were going to directly be given back to the people. Kiwanis, the adult of branch of Key Club holds the same values we do and there is no one else that we would want to donate our money to other than them. With the donations they’ve received from across the country, Kiwanis has bought supplies to give to the victims. Thanks to your help, we were able to raise $1,268.10 for Kiwanis Funds for Children. I think one big takeaway from the fundraiser is that being part of an organization larger than yourself gives you opportunities you wouldn’t have if you were holding a fundraiser alone. We are part of New York District Key Club and because of that, we are able to hold large fundraisers. We are part of Kiwanis International and because of that, we are able to help people in another part of the country without actually being there. Thank you so much to everyone who came. I am so grateful for you. Thank you.
K-FAMILY PICNIC Linkai Ye, Division 9
On Saturday, September 2nd, I attended the 7th Annual NY District Kiwanis Family Picnic. Not only did I have an amazing time, but we all helped raise over $750 for the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center of Long Island! The picnic was a great way to bond and meet new Key Clubbers. My initial expectations of this picnic were not very high, since I didn't know anyone, with the exception of three people. However, that quickly changed, I met a few Key Clubbers on the journey to the park itself and even more during the picnic. The environment was especially amazing, as a new Key Clubber, I was especially shocked to see how welcoming and upbeat every single individual was. I was easily able to make a few more friends. Everyone was super outgoing! Something I loved during this picnic was the volleyball circle. The circle started out quite small and it soon got larger and larger. Everyone was super supportive; it didn't matter if you were bad at the game and it didn't matter if you were a pro. Everyone was so genuine in their support for one another. The Kiwanis Family Picnic was definitely a great way to bond and build new friendships! The food and pieing members of the District Board, including our own LTG, were also especially enjoyable. I hope all of you attend the next Kiwanis Family Picnic! You won’t regret it!

Youth Opportunities Fund
The Youth Opportunities Fund is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. This fund uses earned interest to help Key Clubs and Key Club members serve the world by providing grants for service opportunities. The Youth Opportunities Fund is established through gifts to the G. Harold Martin Fellowships. Apply here: https://app.reviewr.com/s1/site/2018yof
YOF grants are given only to Key Clubs and/or club members. There is only one funding cycle for the Youth Opportunities Fund. The application must be received by October 15th at 11:59PM EST. Clubs may request funding assistance ranging anywhere from US$100 to US$2,000. Applicants must use Reviewr, the YOF online grant application. Guidelines for submitting a YOF application is listed in the Key Club Guidebook under Board Policies. 22

Fall Rally "Fall Rally is a fundamental part of the Key Club experience! Fall rallies are usually held within the first few months of school starting and are vital in training new officers in their positions. Lieutenant governors from various divisions along with the executive board members will work together in order to run their rallies. At many rallies, there could be guest speakers and special guests as well as various workshops such as officer training, applying for awards, contributing to your communities or even interactive service projects! Fall Rally is an important event in the Key Club service year and hopefully, this year, whether it be your first or last, will be informative and fun!"
