A Word from Your Editor Greetings New York District! I hope you guys have had a good start to the school year! With November right around the corner, that means Key Club Week (the 7th-11th) is too. Spread the word by making posters and advertising around your respective schools. Also, don’t forget about the Governor’s Project, Voices for the Blind. Hold fundraisers in your communities and please send them to my email for a chance to be featured in the Empire Key! Concerning updates, the board will be in the Catskills the second weekend of November with Circle-K and Kiwanis for the Tri-K board meeting. Our international trustee JoJo Saunders from the PNW district will also be there! As editor, I am responsible for grading Lieutenant Governor Newsletters, keeping a newsletter log, and creating what you are currently reading, the Empire Key (distributed every two months)! I would love it if club editors contacted me with any questions they might have about graphic standards or anything at all. If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Governor’s Update Hello New York District Key Clubbers! We are crossing the midpoint of the Key Club year, which means that time is of the essence to make a difference in your communities! I am very happy to say that the District level has been hard at work to make this year better for all of you. First off, we are offering two district-wide fundraisers this year. We will be selling t-shirts for the Governor's Project, Voices for the Blind, in order to raise money for Camp Abilities. Additionally, we are working with the District Project, Icing Smiles, to offer boxes of Icing Smiles merchandise that you can sell in your schools to raise money for Icing Smiles as well. For more information, you can talk to your Lt. Governors. We have also been hard at work planning Leadership Training Conference (already!) to make it the most attendee-focused, exciting, and fun conference yet. We have revised our workshop list to offer more, better workshops to attendees with 35% of them being new to LTC. Additionally, the Board has been working hard on Fall Rallies, which are coming up in October and November. Talk to your Lt. Governor for details about the rally in your area, but rest assured that wherever you are, Fall Rally will be an exciting and informative event for your clubs, officers, and members. On top of this, we have been working on the NYDKC App project. That's right, we are working to create a New York District Key Club App! This will be focused on helpful information to connect Key Club to you through your smartphones. I hope all of you are as excited about this project as I am. We work extremely hard on the District level to make Key Club more and more able to serve all the homes, schools, and communities it can reach. But without you, the membership, none of this would mean anything. So, I would like to thank you for all of the time you dedicate to service, fundraising, and

Thank you for your continued service, and thank you for choosing to do it with Key Club. Please don't hesitate to contact your Lt. Governor or me with any problems you may be having. Serving you is our job, so please don't be shy. I love hearing from Key Clubbers, so feel free to reach out if you ever need anything. Enjoy the rest of this newsletter, have a fantastic second month of school, and HAPPY KEY CLUBBING! Yours in Service, Matt Garber District Governor

Executive Assistant’s Update Hey Key Clubbers, There are only 5 months left in this service year (*crying emoji). I have had such an amazing time serving as the Executive Assistant of the New York District. I was able to attend the International Convention at Atlanta in July. I was able to meet a lot of different people and gather ideas for our own conference this upcoming March. There will be some excited changes to the Leadership Training Conference this year so be sure to sign up. After 3 months of planning, I am extremely excited that the Fall Rallies are going to be held within this month. Working alongside your Lieutenant Governors, I know that they have worked extremely hard to make this event a very special and fun event for all of you. Therefore, you must make sure to contact your club officers and/or your Lieutenant Governors for more information. During Fall Rally, there will be many important announcements including our Leadership Training Conference theme and the debut of our Promo Video. Secretary’s Update Hello New York District Key Club! I hope the school year has been treating you well so far. Have club activities started up yet? There will be a lot in store for you this year, and remember to report any events your club holds on the Monthly Report Form! The MRF is due on the 10th of every month, and because it’s a pretty long form to fill out, it can get a little confusing. Here are some general rules: 1. The month you’ll be filling out the MRF for will be the month that just passed. So, if you’re reporting club meetings in September, you know you’re submitting the September MRF even if you’re actually filling out the form during October. 2. When you’re filling out the email blank asking for your Lt.G, the correct template is firstnamelastname.ltg@nydkc.org. If you don’t follow this template, your Lt.G may not receive the notification that you submitted the form at all. 3. There are some schools with similar names. Make sure you’re checking the name of your school on www.nydkc.org under the correct division number, and filling in the correct name under the “School” blank. Remember, your club must submit all MRFs and an ERF to receive the Perfect Paperwork Award in March at LTC. Even if you submit late, you’re still eligible for the award! However, make sure you get in your school’s ERF as soon as possible, since I am currently compiling the district directory and it can only be released after many schools submit. Other things for you to look forward to are my presentations at Fall Rally. I will be coming to the Long Island and NYC Fall Rally to present a Secretary’s Workshop; I look forward to seeing you there. By the way, we’re just under 50% the way through with our service hour goal this year, so keep reporting any hours your club performs! Happy Key Clubbing! Yours in Service, Contact me at:

Treasurer’s Update Hello New York District! I look forward to attending your Fall Rallies! In this update, I will be discussing the Fundraising Report Form and club dues. I have created a Membership Update Center tutorial for advisors and club secretaries. The link will be sent to your Lt. Governors and club advisors (those of which have filled out the Election Report Form). Be sure to fill out the Fundraising Report Form after each fundraiser. I need to know how much your club has raised during a fundraiser so that your club can get credit! Please keep this in mind! When choosing a charity, remember that your club can choose to fundraise for one of our district charities! We are about a month into the school year now and many of you have already started collecting dues. Dues are paid annually by every member of Key Club and are used to keep your clubs running! Dues are once again $13, of which $7 goes to Key Club International and $6 goes to the New York District. The Early Bird Dues Deadline is November 1st. To meet the Early Bird Dues Deadline, your club will have to have submitted dues for at least 15 members by the deadline to be considered as an active club. The Regular Dues Deadline is December 1st. If your club does not submit their dues by February 1st, they will be suspended; therefore, be sure to submit your club dues! This can be done so by working with your club secretary and advisors. The club secretary will be entering the member information into the Membership Update Center (MUC) with the guidance of the advisors. Once the information has been entered, an invoice and check should be sent out to Key Club International. Club secretaries and advisors can log into the MUC at any time during the service year to add more members. If this is the case, just print out a new invoice and pay the amount your club owes for the new members.

…Treasurer’s Update cont. I encourage all club treasurers to attend their upcoming Fall Rally. I may not be able to make it to every Fall Rally due to travel issues; however, I will be sending a Treasurer’s Workshop presentation to all Treasurer presenters so that you can still receive the information. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at any time! I wish everyone the best of luck! Yours in Service, Cynthia Jiang District Treasurer

Webmaster’s Update Hello New York District Key Club, It’s that time of the year where the school year starts again! As school starts, club meetings also start which entails to the introduction of Key Club events and service projects. If you will be or have recently done a service project that is out of the ordinary and you think it should be service spotlighted, feel free to email at kevinyin.tech@nydkc.org to have your service project be featured on the district website! Over the past month, I have been working on the Leadership Training Conference website which I have mentioned in my previous update. The website is completed and is on the district website right now. You could directly go to the LTC website at ltc.nydkc.org. The LTC website will obviously consist of information about LTC, however, the website will also consist of information about awards. A goal brought up to the District Awards Committee this year is to digitize some of the awards. The District Awards Committee have digitized two awards this year, the Outstanding Key Club Member and the Outstanding Officer Award. To apply for these awards, you must fill out an online application on the LTC website. The online application will be released in late autumn, so be ready to apply for the Outstanding Key Club Member and Outstanding Officer Award. Also, be sure to expect the registration and schedule for the Leadership Training Conference to be released in the fall as well. We are at the midway point of the service year and the 69th Leadership Training Conference isn’t far from now. Let us continue to commit service and make this service year one the best. Hope to see you at the upcoming Fall Rallies! Yours in Service,

A Word from Your Int’l Trustee Hello New York District Key Clubbers! I hope that the start of your school year has been a great one! As our new Key Club year begins, the international level is working on helping to make sure this year will be one of the best! We recently had a back to school webinar, where we went over some of the things that happened over the summer and some upcoming events! With October coming around, we have the YOF deadline approaching. This is a great way to get funding for a service project that you or your club have been thinking about doing. And we want to help! The Deadline is October 15th, and if you have any questions, you can contact me about it! Alongside the YOF, Trick or Treat for UNICEF is coming up! This is a great way to help raise funds for UNICEF, and the ELIMINATE Project! Instead of Trick-OrTreating for candy, we ask for monetary donations in order to help raise money in combating Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus! Even though school can seem like it’s going on forever, the service year has just begun! With key clubbers like you, I have full confidence that this will be an amazing year. If you have any questions, I’m always available to help! In love and service, JoJo Saunders International Trustee

Preferred Charities Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Since 1983, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has raised more than $5 billion— most of it $1 at a time—for 170 children’s hospitals across the United States and Canada, which, in turn, use the money where it’s needed the most. These donations have gone to support research and training, purchase equipment, and pay for uncompensated care, all to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible. Our mission: We increase funds and awareness for local children’s hospitals. Our vision: Together we save kids’ lives. Right now there’s a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital working to save the lives of kids in your community. In fact, 62 children enter a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital for treatment every minute — that's one child every second. Some are battling cancer. Some are suffering from a traumatic injury. Others require constant care because they were born too early, or with a genetic disease. Regardless of why the kids are there, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals always have their doors open.

March of Dimes President Franklin Roosevelt's personal struggle with polio led him to create the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis at a time when polio was on the rise. Better known as the March of Dimes, the foundation established a polio patient aid program and funded research for vaccines developed by Jonas Salk, MD and Albert Sabin, MD. These vaccines effectively ended epidemic polio in the United States. Its original mission accomplished, the foundation turned its focus to preventing birth defects and infant mortality. The March of Dimes has led the way to discover the genetic causes of birth defects, to promote newborn screening, and to educate medical professionals and the public about best practices for healthy pregnancy. We have supported research for surfactant therapy to treat respiratory distress and helped initiate the system of regional neonatal intensive care for premature and sick babies. Our recent Folic Acid Campaign achieved a dramatic reduction in the incidence of neural tube defects, birth defects of the brain and spine.

UNICEF For 15 years, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were a guiding force on many issues affecting the lives of children, young people and their families. Over this time, tremendous progress was made in reducing preventable child deaths, getting more children into schools (including both girls and boys), reducing extreme poverty and in ensuring more people have access to safe water and nutritious food. However, progress has been uneven and many of the most pressing issues for the world - including addressing inequalities, promoting inclusive economic growth, protecting children from violence and combating climate change -- were not adequately covered in the MDGs. 17

District Project Icing Smiles Icing Smiles is a nonprofit organization that provides custom celebration cakes and other treats to families impacted by the critical illness of a child. We understand that the simple things, like a birthday cake, are luxuries to a family battling illness. Our goal is to create a custom cake for the ill child, or their sibling, that provides a temporary escape from worry and creates a positive memory during a difficult time.

Memories have magical powers. Long after the cake is gone, the memories linger – memories of the kindness of a stranger, of the art of the design, of the sweet smells of a special treat, of the smiles and laughs, of a normal childhood experience so often stolen from these children. These memories are why we say, “It is so much more than a cake.” Website: https://www.icingsmiles.org

Governor’s Project Voices for the Blind Voices for the Blind is all about empowering blind and visually impaired children. It is meant to promote education, leadership, and confidence, with the goal of allowing more and more blind children to take an active and integrated role in society. Camp Abilities are summer camps for blind children that focus on adapted sports, interaction, and confidence building. Started in Brockport, NY, the number of individually run camps has expanded to four camps in New York and 26 camps in six different nations in total. 18

Eliminate Project UNICEF and its partners have combated maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) across the globe through education, outreach, and mass immunization drives. In addition to delivering tetanus vaccines to even the remotest areas by any means necessary — including on horseback and even on foot — UNICEF has trained traditional midwives and birth attendants in safe birthing practices and distributed safe birthing kits. To help stem the tide of MNT, UNICEF has also supported prenatal care and a wide range of other maternal and newborn health services. Since 1999, UNICEF and its partners have immunized nearly 100 million women with two or more doses of the vaccine and eliminated the disease in 39 countries. Countries that have recently validated the elimination of MNT include Sierra Leone, Gabon, Laos and Madagascar. MNT still remains a deadly threat in 20 countries.

Thirst Project

We are the Key Club International Service Partner. Our mission is simple: Build a socially-conscious generation of young people who END the global water crisis. We do this by educating students about it and activating them to rock the clean water cause & build real water projects all over the world. Why Water? Health and Sanitation: Waterborne diseases kill more children every single year than AIDS, Malaria, and all world violence combined. Small children typically do not have strong enough immune systems to fight diseases like cholera, dysentery, or schistosomiasis. By providing a community with safe drinking water, disease rates can drop by up to 88% virtually overnight! Child mortality rates can drop up to 90%- overnight! Clean water also plays an incredibly critical role in effectively treating and managing HIV/AIDS in rural communities. Swaziland, for example, has the single-highest-density population of HIV/AIDS in the world. For a person with HIV/AIDS, even if you have access to medical treatment or antiretroviral medication, but are still forced to drink dirty water from contaminated sources, the diseases in the water you drink will actually kill you faster than AIDS itself. 19

Kiwanis District Charities Kamp Kiwanis Kamp Kiwanis is aimed at providing fun, physical exercise and adventure. It strives to afford opportunities to participate in a creative outdoor group experience in a democratic setting and develop characteristics of leadership and fair play. The program at Kamp Kiwanis is designed to mainstream all children, including up to 20 each session with special needs. It is non-competitive with emphasis on group and team building. No activity is forced, but all are encouraged. 102 acres of woodlands with a pond for fishing and boating and an inground swimming pool. The coed camp accepts children ages 8 through 14; younger and older ages are considered with special approval. The camp has a capacity of 130 campers with 20 special needs campers per week. The staff/camper ratio is one to eight. Lower ratios are provided when needed. The camp is basically handicapped accessible.

Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center The New York District of Kiwanis’s Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center program provides lifesaving training, equipment, and education to prevent pediatric trauma. Every year, more children die from unintentional injuries than all childhood diseases combined. Trauma claims the lives of 25,000 children each year. Another 120,000 youngsters are permanently disabled. It doesn't have to be that way. With proper, prompt care, about 25 percent of the deaths and disabilities could be prevented or reduced. Saving children's lives requires equipment and training as is provided by Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Centers. KPTC works with, and trains, prehospital care providers such as paramedics and emergency medical technicians for pediatric emergency care. Additionally, KPTC offers safety programs to prevent accidents before they happen. It has centers on Long Island, in Albany, and in Buffalo.

Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease The Lyme disease problem was brought to Kiwanis' attention during 2000-01 when New York District Gov. John Gridley vowed to do something to help children afflicted with this terrible disease. The Lyme Disease Project was quickly set up to help pay for medical treatment for children with this disease. Unfortunately, many insurance companies don’t pay for the treatment, which is extremely expensive. Our support is funded through donations from Kiwanis Clubs and individuals and channeled into the Pediatric Lyme Disease Fund. Just this winter, KPLD provided a grant of over $20,000 to one young New Yorker afflicted by the disease. Lyme disease is caused by bacteria usually transmitted by the deer tick. It is a scary possibility to consider for New York State residents who enjoy spending time outside during the summer months. Lyme disease may affect the brain in many ways. The most common is a disturbance in thinking. Other symptoms that occur frequently include headache, mood swings, irritability, depression and marked fatigue.

Youth Opportunities Fund What is it? The Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International held within the Kiwanis International Foundation. This fund uses earned interest to help Key Clubs and Key Club members serve the world by providing grants for service opportunities. The Youth Opportunities Fund is established through gifts to the G. Harold Martin Fellowships. YOF grants can help you take action. Look around and identify the things that need to get done in your school, community or world.

What you need to know: 

YOF grants are given only to Key Clubs and/or club members.

There is only one funding cycle for the Youth Opportunities Fund. The application must be received by October 15 at 11:59 PM EST.

Clubs may request funding assistance ranging anywhere from US$100 to US$2,000. The committee typically funds those clubs who are asking for a portion of the total cost of the project, and clubs who are working with other organizations to fund and complete the project. There is one funding cycle for YOF grants per year. Applications received by October 15 at 11:59 PM EST are reviewed by the Key Club International YOF committee at their November meeting. Funding notifications are mailed no later than January first each year.

Applicants must use the current YOF grant application. Previous years' applications will not be accepted.

Guidelines for filing the application are also listed in the Key Club Guidebook under Board Policies.
