Master interview skills in 90 seconds Interview skills are a crucial part of finding your dream career or pursuing your desired educational route and can help build your soft skills for everyday life. The ability to communicate efectively and present yourself in a professional manner can get you exactly where you want to be in life. So, what exactly are employers looking for? We go through some top interview skills that can get you that dream course or job.

Preparation Before entering an interview situation, it is imperative that you brush up on your knowledge and research the role, company, course or position. This will ensure that you have the necessary knowledge to conduct an effective interview and will undoubtedly make you stand out from other candidates.

First impressions It is suggested that people form their first impression of you in the first seven seconds, so it is important to make it count. Be sure to greet interviewers with a smile, a firm handshake and eye contact. You have to sell yourself before you can sell anything else and the interviewer will likely make a decision about whether you will fit in with the team as part of this first impression.

Be positive A positive attitude can really set you apart in an interview and make you stand out as a suitable candidate. The last thing an interviewer wants is someone who will be

4 | NXGZINE

negative to work with, so be enthusiastic about your previous and prospective roles and present yourself as someone who enjoys a challenge.

Body language Body language can be just as important as verbal language and will help you get your foot in the door during an interview. Negative body language such as folded arms or looking at the floor can present you in an undesirable light, which could hinder your job prospects. It is important to sit upright and maintain eye contact during an interview in order to reflect positivity and maintain a professional persona.

Why should they hire you? It is important that you successfully convey exactly why you would be the ideal candidate for the role. Make sure you know what they are looking for and tailor your skills and experience to this. For example, are they looking for a team worker, a good communicator, someone who can take initiative, a leader? Have at least three strong skills that you can put forward in the interview and be prepared to speak about

your experience, knowledge and abilities.

Expect the unexpected Interviewers will often ask questions that will seem a little unusual or are designed to catch you out. Don’t panic in these situations and use your answer to demonstrate thoughtfulness and creativity. It is impossible to plan for tricky questions so it’s important to remain calm and in control. If necessary ask the interviewer to repeat the question to gain some extra thought time but do not try to avoid it altogether. __ For more careers tips visit www.nxgconnect.co.uk

Careers in

Science

British Science Week (BSW) is a ten-day programme of science, technology, engineering and maths events and activities taking place from 10th to 19th March across the UK for people of all ages. If you’ve been considering a career in one of these areas, but are unsure about what you need to succeed, read on!

MATHS Of all the STEM subjects, maths is the one that is often dismissed as boring, but it plays a really important role in technology and the economy in general. Maths enables people to solve real-world problems and, if you choose to study it, can equip you with lifelong and useful skills. There are many careers on offer for mathematics students (for example, did you know that to be an astronaut you need a really good understanding of maths?). Maths is surprisingly flexible and offers a range of high-paying careers. Many employers require candidates to have a basic maths qualification, so it is really important to ensure that you have a good GCSE to give you the best options in the future.

When did you first know you were interested in pursuing music? Well, I’ve always been interested in music as a hobby, but actually pursuing it as a career, I would say I only started that about two years ago. That was when I really sacrificed everything and put absolutely everything I had into it. But it has always been an interest of mine for as long as I can remember; I was always known as the rapper at school, and rapping has always been something that I’ve really loved. What was it like for you growing up in London in the 90s and 00s? I can’t really remember too much about the 90s, as I was born in 1990, but in the early 2000s rapping was something that was on the streets, to be fair with you, and very much part of the gang culture as well. 12 | NXGZINE

Has the South London music scene changed much since you first became interested in it? When I was growing up it was a lot tougher and people weren’t as open to so many sounds. You really had to fit into a category, whereas now you can almost make your own category of music; the internet has really opened it up to a bigger audience. When I was growing up, you had to cater to the London audience, which was either rap or grime or garage, but now you can cater to absolutely everything. It’s changed, man; people have more opportunities now and it’s a lot more open. You just mentioned about there being more opportunities now, especially in the digital age. You have a massive YouTube presence – do you think that this is something that has personally helped you?

Yeah, definitely, it opened me up. When I was younger, without YouTube, I could only be as popular as my reach. Back in the day, it was about streaming songs through phones, so if somebody had my song on their phone, I could almost trace it back to who I originally sent it to, and he sent it to that person, and then he sent it to that person. Whereas now, I actually have reach to almost the whole world. I’ve got fans everywhere and I’m just grateful to be able to have that kind of reach. It’s definitely helped me in ways I could never have imagined. People that I have never even met can know my work word for word, and that’s amazing.

Are you a fan of the touring lifestyle, or would you rather be at home instead of on the road? Yeah, I mean the touring lifestyle is beautiful because that’s when you get to see the appreciation and people really taking in your music. I mean, I’ve only toured twice, but both times it was amazing; the fact you’re travelling because of your art, there is no better feeling in the world. But when I’m at home, it does remind me that I do need to work. So when I’m back home, that’s when I get most of my writing done; home is almost like the office for me.

What’s it like being in the public eye?

Do you get a good hometown vibe when you perform in London? To be fair, the appreciation I get from London doesn’t tend to be that sure. It tends to be about everyday life; so people will come up to me and thank me for talking about this. A lot of the appreciation actually comes from outside of London. People in London, they get to see my face all the time, so I’m not saying that they don’t care, but it’s not as big a thing to them. Whereas if I go somewhere where people don’t see my face that oen, they tend to appreciate it a lot more. But I’m grateful for my fans in London and outside of London. In London, I do get that hometown love, but outside of London I get that real genuine surprise and appreciation because they don’t see me that oen.

I appreciate it, to be fair; I do enjoy it. It does remind me that I do need to work a lot of the time; I’m very heavy on getting work done and trying to You’ve done a lot so far in your short career, including remain humble. If a supporter comes playing some of the UK’s up to me and says, ‘I like your music’, most popular venues. What that’s now down to me to make sure would you say has been the they also applaud me every time they highlight so far and why? see me. Now I’ve had a taste of it, I I think the highlight so far is the people want to make sure that it doesn’t go anywhere; I need to make sure that that are super fans reaching out to I stay working. It’s pressure, but I do me. These fans reaching out to me welcome the pressure as I think it will and appreciating what I do, there is help me become a better person. no better feeling in the world. Also, seeing the queue. When I’ve got a You’ve just dropped another show on and I see the queue for the huge track: Airplane Mode. venue, I stop and think, wow, these What’s the story behind this people are really here for me – that one? is just amazing. Being on stage as well, it’s so hard to just pinpoint one To be fair with you, I’m just really bad thing; it’s like saying your best part at answering my phone! Everything I about heaven when there are so many always tend to say in my songs tends to amazing things. It’s the whole package; be true; I am pretty pants at answering everything, man. I’m just grateful that I my phone and that’s the reason for get to experience this, in all honesty. the song. NXGZINE | 13

What can we expect from your upcoming EP The Commitment 2? Everything I’ve done in life so far and more. I intend to show growth and new songs and music. I want to make good songs and I also really want to develop the music and just show people that I’ve grown; I’m not the same person. I have grown in music. I want to give everything people love me for, but also more. I want to get people to fall in love with all aspects of my music. What advice would you give to young people who want to pursue a music career? Do it. There is no excuse, just do it. Now, in this generation, you have no reason not to be a success. It’s really down to you just doing it. If you want to be a rapper, rap. If you want to be on YouTube, your phone can upload videos. You have no reason not to be great. Whatever you want to be, just do it. And if you don’t do it, the only person you really have to blame is yourself. What do you think makes a great rapper or artist? Work. Work is the only thing, not even talent, you just need a good work rate. They say that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. If you stay consistent at something and work hard enough, it will pay off. It’s literally just about working hard. Even if you can’t rap to save your life, if you stay working hard at rapping, you will become better and your work rate will shine through. It is one of the most important factors.

If you could collaborate with anyone in the future, who would it be and why? I would like to collaborate with legends like Lauryn Hill or Musiq Soulchild. Artists that have a completely different sound to mine so we can bring out a better sound. Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, J. Cole, there are so many people I would love to do music with. People that can help me learn.

What’s your plan for the next 12 months? My fans can expect hard work. There is so much to expect from me; it’s about putting absolutely everything in. To be fair, I don’t even know what to expect from me; I intend to work so hard that I surprise myself. I couldn’t have told you that half the journey was gonna happen the way it has; it’s just testament to working hard and things will pay off.

CI N EM A

Fist Fight 3rd March After mild-mannered English teacher Andy Campbell (Charlie Day) tries to juggle end-of-year pranks and job-costing budget cuts, he accidentally costs fellow teacher and tough rival Ron Strickman (Ice Cube) his job. As a result, Strickman challenges Campbell to an old-fashioned after-school ‘fist fight’, upon which the comedy is centred and which certainly makes for some laughs. While it is unlikely that Fist Fight will be one for the critics, the ingredients of a modern American comedy are definitely there, making it one to go and see this year. It’s on!

The Fate of the Furious 14th April

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 28th April Yes, there is a Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and yes, it’s funny and entertaining like the first, making it a cinema must-see! Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the superhero team’s adventures in the outer reaches of the cosmos, this time with the Guardians fighting to keep the team together as they uncover the mysteries of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt)’s family. If you haven’t seen the first yet, then it’s definitely worth a watch in order for you to enjoy both films from Marvel’s expanding cinematic universe.

16 | NXGZINE

Although it doesn’t seem like it, this is now the eighth instalment from the Fast and the Furious franchise and sadly the first without Paul Walker, following his tragic death in 2013. With Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) on honeymoon, Brian and Mia retiring from the game and the rest of the crew having been exonerated, the team is experiencing a taste of normal life. But when a mysterious woman seduces Dom to enter a world of crime from which he cannot seem to escape, they face trials through the exotic locations of New York and Cuba that test them and their family like never before, making it a top cinema see!

DVD

Doctor Strange 6th March This is the latest film from the Marvel collection and features all of the expected action alongside an allstar cast that certainly doesn’t disappoint. Benedict Cumberbatch takes the lead as the unpredictable but brilliant Dr Stephen Strange, a neurosurgeon whose career is shattered by a car accident but who is given a new lease of life when he is trained in the mystic arts to defend the world against evil. This is a satisfying and mind-bending addition to Marvel and an obvious takehome film for its fans but also for those who enjoy the fantasy genre and this new take on it.

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them 27th March With the last release being in 2011, Harry Potter fans finally get to add another DVD to their collection thanks to this further exploration of J. K. Rowling’s wizarding world. The prequel spin-off sees Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) enter 1920s New York on a quest to document magical creatures at a time of rising anti-wizard sentiment. Problems soon arise when magical creatures escape from his trademark suitcase and are set loose among ‘millions of the most vicious creatures on the planet; humans.’ Fantastic Beasts, with its dark undertones and subtle links, shows that it has grown up with its Potter fan base, but it is also an equally good watch for those who are new to the Potter Universe.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story 10th April In this latest exhilarating Star Wars spin-off, all looks lost for the Rebellion against the Empire when they learn of the existence of a new super weapon in the form of the Death Star. However, once a potential weakness in its construction is discovered, the Rebel Alliance must embark on a crucial mission to steal the plans for the Death Star, with the future of the galaxy resting on their success. Felicity Jones takes on and delivers in the female lead role, a performance fitting of those before her. This is an energetic, cutting-edge fantasy coupled with nostalgia that will whet the appetite of any Star Wars fan.

However, in the face of new threats, Rand must choose between his family’s legacy and his duties as the Iron Fist.

iZombie Season 3 (April) The much-awaited Season 3 of iZombie is set to return with a jam-packed 2-hour premier in April. The new season reveals what happened after the events that took place following Clive’s all-out Romero Zombie attack. Vivian Stoll has unleashed a new world order that allows zombies to rule the world, starting with Seattle. In addition, there’s a new character joining in the form of Jason Dohring, best known from TV series ‘Veronica Mars’. Promising an action-packed storyline with its usual splash of twists and turns, this season is definitely one to watch.

But after seven years working for a terrorist cell, is he the same Michael, or has he crossed the line in a way that he can never come back from? This 9-episode miniseries is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

A L BU MS

Stormzy – Gang Signs and Prayer 24th February 2017 is the year of Stormzy. While his debut follows hot on the heels of new albums by grime godfathers Wiley in January and Skepta last year, Stormzy’s fresh sound and passion have seen his hype build by the day – his spring UK tour sold out in minutes, he’s got a ton of awards under his belt and he’s even got his own show on Apple Radio’s Beats 1. On ‘GSAP’, Stormzy really stretches his muscles, with lead single ‘Big For Your Boots’ seeing him lay some stand-offish and aggressive verses over its garage-inspired vibe. If ‘GSAP’ is a preview of things to come, we hope 2017 isn’t the only year of Stormzy.

SZA – CTRL (TBC) Right now, SZA is at the forefront of R&B and soul. Collaborations with the likes of Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q and Chance the Rapper have helped the singer’s popularity grow in recent years, and fans have been eagerly awaiting her first fulllength album since it was announced back in 2014. The soulful groove of tracks like ‘Drew Barrymore’ are sure to be big hits with fans of Beyoncé and Solange’s more chilled-out songs, and if the recent EPs are anything to go by, the guest spots on the album should blend perfectly with SZA’s smooth vocals. ‘CTRL’ should be essential listening for any R&B fans, and SZA’s genre crossovers are sure to appeal to listeners of all styles.

Drake – More Life (TBC) Does Drake ever stop? It was just a year ago that ‘Views’ was released, two years since ‘If You’re Reading This…’, and outside of the studio he’s spent most of his time touring. Yet somehow he’s managed to find time to put together ‘More Life’, and it’s another win for the king of Canadian rap. We were given our first taste of Drake’s latest last year with singles ‘Fake Love’, ‘Sneakin’’ and ‘Two Birds, One Stone’, with ‘Fake Love’ staying firmly in the charts ever since. ‘More Love’ is classic Drake, swimming with his unique mix of hip-hop and smooth R&B crooning, and should be a big hit with any true fans. Still, if ‘More Love’ isn’t enough to fill your Drake appetite, just wait 12 months and we’ll surely have another whole new album.

TO P TE CH

We take a look at some of the best new tech releases that are sure to keep you entertained over the coming months.

Nintendo Switch Released 3rd March Nintendo is once again revolutionising the gaming industry with its new console – this time giving you three experiences in one. The Switch revolves around its central tablet, which can be used either as a handheld console or set up as a mini screenand-console hybrid for solo or multiplayer modes, or placed in its TV dock for the full-screen, traditional console experience, with the removable ‘Joy-Con’ controllers providing versatile gaming options. While the Switch isn’t the cheapest console Nintendo have ever produced (RRP £279.99, around £100 more than the bestselling Wii on its release), the appeal of launch titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 1-2-Switch, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 set to follow soon after, make us think it could easily be worth shelling out for.

MASS EFFECT

:Andromeda

Released 23rd March Out on Xbox One, PS4 and PC Andromeda has a lot of weight on its shoulders – its predecessor, Mass Effect 3, won heaps of praise on its release and is still held up as one of the best of its generation five years later. Mass Effect: Andromeda has a lighter tone than the previous instalments, featuring an open world that the player is invited to explore. Taking the role of either Sara or Scott Ryder, an inexperienced military recruit who wakes up in Andromeda after a 600-year journey, players may be in for a slightly different experience than they’re used to, but one that’s sure to refresh the story and build on the elements that gave the original trilogy such a huge fan base across the world. 20 | NXGZINE

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon :Wildlands Released 7th March Out on Xbox One, PS4 and PC Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands is a huge openworld military shooter set in Bolivia two years into the future, at a time when the country has become increasingly unstable due to the rise in power of the Santa Blanca drug cartel. This makes it a departure from recent Ghost Recon games like Advanced Warfighter or Future Soldier that have taken place in the more distant future. Featuring nine varying types of terrain and its own dynamic weather system and day-night cycle, this latest instalment in the Ghost Recon series is sure to be a big hit with any fans of the latest Far Cry and Just Cause games, and should have players trekking every inch of the huge map for a long time to come.

Stormzy,

also known as Michael Omari, is the biggest force in the UK rap scene right now. Describing himself as “a child of grime,” Stormzy has been influenced by the likes of Wiley and Skepta, as well as R&B singers such as Frank Ocean and Lauryn Hill. Growing up in Norbury, near Croydon, Stormzy lived with his mum, two sisters, Rachel and Sylvia, and younger brother Brandon. He first started spitting bars when he was 11 after having his mind blown by Dizzee Rascal’s Boy in da Corner a year earlier, but despite his interest in music, it wasn’t an immediate path for him and not something he ever thought he could be at the forefront of 13 years later. Stormzy didn’t have the smoothest time in education, and after being suspended on several occasions, he was expelled from sixth form. He was a smart kid – proved by his 6 A* GCSEs – but education just wasn’t right for him. However, he soon decided he wasn’t happy with the route he was going down and got himself off to college. This was followed by an apprentice course and he ended up as a project manager at an engineering firm and working on an oil refinery off the south coast. Despite finding himself in a good place with a good job, Stormzy knew that his heart wasn’t in it, and he went back to his first love – music. Stormzy began his music career as a road MC, rapping in a style closer to US hip-hop than grime. He started uploading videos to his YouTube channel in 2011, but it wasn’t until he started sharing his Wicked Skengman freestyles that he began attracting some real attention. His first appearance on a record was the 2010 track All Starz by Bully, alongside Wholagun and Don D, but his debut solo single wasn’t until 2014, with Not That Deep from the Dreamers Disease EP. However, he really made waves in the mainstream a year later when Know Me From was released, hitting number 49 in the UK charts – an impressive feat for an unsigned grime artist. Stormzy has always loved having his own independence and doing things himself, inspired by other artists in the grime scene, so it’s no surprise that he’s now launched his own independent record label, #Merky.

What kind of student were you? I was an average student who once failed, in Year 10 (equivalent to Senior Secondary in the Nigerian education system). As a young student, I was afraid of learning or attempting to learn anything new. Consequently, this tainted my perception of my ability to perform well in my studies. This in turn led to test anxiety and misconceptions about the possibility of attaining good results in the future.

7 Ways To Get Into The Music Industry DEB MCKOY Have you ever found yourself watching your favourite artist on stage and dreamt of being there yourself? Maybe you would prefer being behind the scenes, promoting an artist and making them the next big thing? It’s not as ridiculous as it sounds – here, industry consultant Deb McKoy reveals her top tips for getting into the music business.

Decide on your role Take a close look at your likes and dislikes. What have you always liked and been good at? How would your friends describe you? Your strengths and passions will lead you in a definite direction. Does your heart take you more in the direction of being a music lawyer, A&R, manager, promoter or another role? Picture yourself in that role for the next 20 years. Does that picture excite you?

Find a mentor A mentor is someone with more knowledge than you in a specialised area. You can meet with a mentor on a regular basis to discuss your aims and any challenges you are facing. A mentor can also be someone you have never met but whose blueprint you follow from books, articles and interviews. Depending on the role you choose you may need a formal qualification. If this is the case, gain expertise from your lecturers. Ask them for help in building a road map for your career. Get started immediately. Create your position before you graduate!

Be your job title Your chosen role should be in an area that fits your personality perfectly. New music platforms are popping up everywhere, from tech to streaming, to live. Clearly understand the importance of your role in the wider industry. Think about how you can be unique and create a greater demand for what you do. Identify a combination of skills that will make you indispensable. Live up to your title.

Love what you do This is usually where you’re advised to work hard, but if you love what you do it will never seem like hard work. Yes, there will be moments when you will need to give yourself a push, but if you have self-confidence, a genuine love for music and a big enough reason for wanting to be part of the industry, you will always stay motivated. When you do what you love there will always be a demand for what you do.

Keep up to date with industry changes Read everything you can get your hands on. Pay attention to changes in the industry and learn about how brands are aligning themselves with music. Think outside the box about how you can create partnerships with these brands to jointly deliver value to the scene. Keep up to speed with your rights around copyright, trademarks and royalties. Gather information from collection agencies (PRS, MCPS, PPL). Depending on the direction you wish to go in you may have some entitlements. Information in this area can help you make better business decisions.

Establish a network Your network is made up of your competitors, partners, consumers and fans. The more connected you are within an active network, the higher your income will be. Your success creates opportunities for other people in the industry and keeps it thriving. Be part of a network that sees the bigger picture and wants everyone to succeed.

Don’t box yourself in Within your unique set of skills, there will be qualities that you can hone for long-term success. Music is being taken in new directions and your transferable skills will help you tap into wider opportunities as the music industry continues to grow and change. Keep learning and growing – create your dream role! __ Deb McKoy is the Founder and Consultant at Peppergrain Ltd, London, UK.
