NTGent start zijn seizoen met een knal! Een rist activiteiten als staalkaart van wat een stadstheater kan (en moet) zijn. Mis deze afspraak met de toekomst niet, ontdek de krachtlijnen van het nieuwe NTGent en schrijf mee theatergeschiedenis. Create your own classics, because the future is yours! Tijdens het openingsweekend is er de première van Milo Rau’s Lam Gods, een panorama van Gent waarbij het bekendste Belgische schilderij opnieuw tot leven komt met acteurs en burgers van vandaag. Er is de première van Ghost Writer & The Broken Hand Break, van de Gentse beeldende kunstenares Miet Warlop, een samenwerking met Vooruit. Er is de Belgische première van Not Another Diva van de Congolese choreograaf Faustin Linyekula en de Zuid-Afrikaanse actrice en choreografe Hlengiwe Lushaba. Er zijn installaties in onze schouwburg, terwijl in Arca artists-in-residence Action Zoo Humain en Renzo Martens recent werk presenteren (inclusief een nieuwe muziekvideo van Baloji). Er is een openingsspeech van journaliste en politieke denkster Béatrice Delvaux en een debat met filosofe Dalilla Hermans, professor Europese politiek Ulrike Guérot en kunstenaar Renzo Martens. Op het Sint-Baafsplein is er de Waarheidskamer, een format in samenwerking met De Standaard waarin diverse figuren worden geïnterviewd terwijl ze aan een leugendetector zijn vastgekoppeld. En er wordt gefeest, uiteraard! We vieren het nieuwe NTGent — een stadstheater voor iedereen en alles. Doet u mee?

During the opening weekend there will be the premiere of Milo Rau’s Lam Gods. We are presenting the premiere of Ghost Writer & The Broken Hand Break by the Ghent artist Miet Warlop and the Belgian premiere of Not Another Diva by the Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula and South African actress and choreographer Hlengiwe Lushaba. There are installations and presentations by our artists-in-residence Action Zoo Humain and Renzo Martens. There is a speech by Béatrice Delvaux and a debate with Ulrike Guérot, Dalilla Hermans and Renzo Martens. There is our Box of Truth, in which people are interviewed while connected to a lie detector. De openingsproductie van het nieuwe NTGent
Wie zijn de martelaren van de 21ste eeuw? De overtuigde gelovigen? Adam en Eva? De slachters en het schaap? Met Lam Gods verbindt regisseur Milo Rau, net zoals de gebroeders van Eyck in hun tijd, het alledaagse met het spirituele: zoals het altaarstuk uit lagen bestaat die elkaar overlappen, zoals het reële zich met het symbolische vermengt, net zo zullen mensen uit Gent vertellen over hun leven. Wie speelt Adam en wie Eva? Wie zijn de rechtvaardige rechters van de 21ste eeuw? De mecenassen? Wat vertellen zij over de thema’s van dit schilderij, over de erfzonde en het menselijk lijden, over geloof en tragedie, dood en verlossing? In de reconstructie ontstaat een panorama van onze wereld tussen traditie en onzekere toekomst. Met Chris Thys, Frank Focketyn en Gentenaars. Who are the martyrs of the 21st century? The deep believers? Adam and Eve? The butchers and the sheep? In Lam Gods, director Milo Rau connects the everyday with the spiritual, just like the Van Eyck brothers. On stage, people from Ghent talk about their lives. This project immerses itself into the here and now of an urban community: who is Ghent’s Cain, who its Abel? Who plays Adam and Eve? Who are the pilgrims and the deep believers of the 21st century? What do they tell us about the themes of the Ghent Altarpiece, about the original sin and human suffering, faith and tragedy, death and salvation?

NOT ANOTHER DIVA STUDIOS KABAKO/ HLENGIWE LUSHABA & FAUSTIN LINYEKULA ‘Er moet toch een andere soort van diva zijn? Eén voorbij de gloss en glitter, voorbij de madame, voorbij de slaaf?’ Dat dachten de Zuid-Afrikaanse actrice Hlengiwe Lushaba en de Congolese choreo-graaf en theatermaker Faustin Linyekula, twee maatschappelijk bewogen artistieke trendsetters die elk een indrukwekkend internationaal parcours aflegden. In 2012 maakten ze samen voor het MOMA in New York What is Black Music Anyway/Self Portraits. Nu werpen ze met Not Another Diva een licht op de emancipatie van de vrouw en de maatschappelijke spanningen in hun continent. In februari 2019 maakt Linyekula voor NTGent Histoire(s) du Théâtre II. Zijn werk was al te zien in meer Brussel, maar voor Gent wordt het een primeur. ‘Surely there must be another kind of diva. One who is beyond the gloss and the glitter.’ The South African actress Hlengiwe Lushaba and the Congolese choreographer and theatremaker Faustin Linyekula join forces in this production. In 2012 they had already worked together on What is Black Music Anyway/Self Portraits for MOMA in New York. This new performance sheds light on the emancipation of women and the social tensions on their continent. In February 2019, Linyekula will create Histoire(s) du Théâtre II for NTGent. His work is called ‘breathtaking political art’ (Los Angeles Times).

29, 30.09 in NTGent Minnemeers & 2.10 in BOZAR (Brussel) ZU NL Miet Warlop, internationaal vermaarde performanceen installatiekunstenares uit Gent, presenteert haar nieuwste werk in coproductie met NTGent en Vooruit. De titel verwijst naar de wilde tocht die een autorit in de bergen kan worden als je rem stuk gaat. Op het podium drie performers, Pieter De Meester, Wietse Tanghe en Miet Warlop. Ze draaien om hun eigen as. Geluid omcirkelt het publiek. “Alsof in alle chaos wordt gezocht naar de centrale as om het moment te peilen.” De teksten werden geschreven door auteur en curator Raimundas Malasauskas. Herinner je je de dag dat de hoelahoep te strak werd en je er een wervelende derwisj bijhaalde om door te kunnen gaan? Die dag kan nog komen. Wervelend drama en duizeligheid alom.
GHOST WRITER & THE BROKEN HAND BREAK NTGENT/MIET WARLOP — IRENE WOOL VZW
Miet Warlop, an internationally renowned performance and installation artist from Ghent, is presenting her latest work as a coproduction with NTGent and Vooruit. The title refers to the wild journey a car ride in the mountains can become when your brake cable snaps. On stage three performers, Pieter De Meester, Wietse Tanghe and Miet Warlop. They turn on their own axis. Sound in a circle that includes the audience. “Like finding the middle axis in utter chaos so as to measure the moment.” The script is written by the author and curator Raimundas Malasauskas. Remember the day when the hula-hoop grew too tight and you called a whirling dervish to keep going around? That day may still come. Swirling drama, and dizziness for all.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GARDEN KOON THEATER GROUP/OSSAMA HALAL De Syrische regisseur Ossama Halal brengt met zijn collectief Koon Theater Group een interpretatie van Hans Christian Andersens De geschiedenis van een moeder. Hij schetst daarbij de ervaringen van gezinnen in de door oorlog verscheurde landen van het Midden-Oosten. Zoals wel vaker in zijn werk kiest Ossama Halal voor symbolische motieven om zijn verhaal vorm te geven. Ditmaal werkt hij ook met poppen als medium.

With his Koon Theater Group, the Syrian director Ossama Halal presents an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s short story The History of a Mother. In doing so he sketches the experiences of families in the Middle East. Ossama Halal often uses symbolic motifs to shape his story. This time he is also using dolls.

Hoe verleidelijk is het de blik af te wenden van een samenleving in crisis? Met Raumteid brengen Steven Prengels en Arno Synaeve muziektheater dat vertrekt van een muzikale en beeldende basis. In Berg worden de thema’s uit de roman De Toverberg van Thomas Mann geconfronteerd met de klankwereld van Richard Wagner. Daarvoor schakelen ze vier eigenzinnige acteurs in: Pascale Platel, Tom Goossens, Witse Lemmens en Gregory Van Seghbroeck. Zij trekken zich terug op een plek in de Zwitserse Alpen. Ze zoeken elkaar in grote en kleine verhalen en laten de wereld daarbuiten even voor wat hij is. De banaliteit krijgt er mythische proporties. How tempting is it to turn a blind eye to a society in crisis? With their company Raumteid, Steven Prengels and Arno Synaeve createmusic theatre based on musical and visual foundations. In Berg, the themes from Thomas Mann’s novel The Magic Mountain are confronted with Richard Wagner’s challenging music. In order to do this, Prengels and Synaeve have engaged four self-willed actors. They travel to the Swiss Alps, where banality acquires mythical proportions.

DE REVOLUTIONAIREN TONEELSCHUUR PRODUCTIES/ELINE ARBO
Is het mogelijk om gruwelijke handelingen te rechtvaardigen, als het uiteindelijke doel onze wereld verder helpt? Op theatrale en muzikale wijze staat Eline Arbo stil bij het gedachtegoed van Albert Camus en speelt ze met thema’s als idealisme, existentialisme en rechtvaardigheid. Kunnen we theater gebruiken om onze wereld mooier te maken of hebben we daar rigoureuzere middelen voor nodig? Wat zijn de morele grenzen van politiek actie? Is it possible to justify horrific acts, if the goal helps our world to move forward? In this theatrical and musical performance, Eline Arbo reflects on Albert Camus' ideas and plays with themes such as idealism, existentialism and justice. Can we use theatre to make our world a more beautiful place, or do we need more rigorous means to do so? What are the moral limits of political action?

BIGMOUTH/SMALLWAR SKAGEN & RICHARD JORDAN PRODUCTIONS/VALENTIJN DHAENENS + THEATRE ROYAL PLYMOUTH IN CREDITS Met fragmenten uit bekende en minder bekende toespraken toont Valentijn Dhaenens de trucs van de retorica. Want wie zijn woorden goed kiest, kan van het zwakste argument het sterkste maken. BigMouth speelde ondertussen in vijfentwintig landen en werd meermaals bekroond. In 2018 sluit Dhaenens dit verhaal af met een slottournee. BigMouth wordt daarbij op één avond gepresenteerd met SmallWar, een monoloog die hij enkele jaren later maakte. In BigMouth wordt de massa warmgemaakt voor oorlog. SmallWar toont de keerzijde van de medaille. Wat zijn de gevolgen van die opzwepende woorden voor de man in de straat? Using extracts from well-known and lesser-known speeches, Valentijn Dhaenens shows us the tricks of rhetoric. BigMouth has now been performed in 25 countries and has been awarded several prizes. On this final tour, it’s presented together with SmallWar, a monologue he created a few years later. In BigMouth, the masses are warmed up to war. SmallWar shows the other side of the coin. What are the consequences of these inflammatory words for the man in the street?

SHORT OF LYING LUANDA CASELLA De Braziliaanse schrijfster en performer Luanda Casella woont en werkt sinds 2006 in België. Ze is gespecialiseerd in storytelling. In de vorm van een TEDTalk vestigt ze de aandacht op de redenaarskunst en legt ze de verschillende mechanieken van misleiding bloot. Zo creëert Luanda Casella een speelse spanning tussen bedrog en bewustwording. The Brazilian writer and performer Luanda Casella has lived and worked in Belgium since 2006. She specializes in storytelling. In the form of a TEDTalk, she draws attention to the art of reasoning and exposes the various mechanisms of deception. In this way, she creates a playful tension between deception and awareness.

Fredo De Smet schreef een handboek voor ‘digitale humanisten’ Het emotionele discours rond technologie leert ons dat technologie ons kan bevrijden maar ook bedreigen. Vandaag lijkt het laatste gevoel te winnen. Digitale technologie heeft de maatschappij dan ook in een controlecrisis gebracht. Maar dat hoeft helemaal geen slecht nieuws te zijn. In zijn manifest getiteld Artificial Stupidity vertelt auteur Fredo De Smet over onze relatie met technologie. Het boek bevat tien vuistregels die op een vrolijke en persoonlijke manier helpen meer humanistisch in plaats van mechanistisch te worden. Fredo De Smet werkte mee aan Hello, Robot. in het Design Museum Gent en is consultant voor de VRT. Hij is ook medeorganisator van Gent M en neemt deel aan de After Summer School.
Dit seizoen participeert NTGent voor het eerst in After Summer School, een jaarlijks format van Campo in samenwerking met een aantal kunstopleidingen: KASK, LUCA en RITCS. De formule is eenvoudig: deelnemers leren een kunstenaar kennen door een dag (of twee) met hem of haar mee te draaien. Dat kan tijdens een repetitie zijn of op een andere werkplek. In totaal gaat het om twintig internationale kunstenaars. Hebben o.a. toegezegd: Seppe Baeyens, Vaast Colson, Fredo De Smet, Florentina Holzinger, Renzo Martens, Ersan Mondtag, Monster Truck, Lara Staal en Doris Uhlich. Het programma loopt van 17 tot 21 september en staat open voor externen, lees: niet-studenten, maar het aantal plaatsen is beperkt. Interesse? The emotional discourse on the topic of technology teaches us that it can liberate us, but also threaten us. Today the latter feeling seems to be winning. And digital technology has indeed led society into a crisis of control. But that doesn’t have to be bad news. In Artificial Stupidity, Fredo De Smet talks about our relationship with technology. The book contains ten rules that offer us cheerful and personal help in becoming more humanistic rather than mechanistic. De Smet worked on Hello, Robot at the Design Museum Ghent and is a consultant for the VRT. He is also co-organiser of the Gent M. Book launch in Arca on Saturday 13th of October. Admission is free.

Theatermaker Milo Rau en zijn team reisden naar de politieke hotspots van onze tijd: de vluchtelingenroutes vanuit het Midden-Oosten en het door burgeroorlog geteisterde Congo. Daar sprak hij hulpverleners, geestelijken en slachtoffers. Met dat materiaal maakte hij in 2016 voor de Schaubühne Berlin de dubbelmonoloog Mitleid. Die Geschichte des Maschinengewehrs. Niet enkel een indrukwekkende bespiegeling over onze omgang met het leed van anderen, maar meteen ook een kritisch zelfonderzoek van het theater (Süddeutsche Zeitung). In deze remake gidsen actrices Els Dottermans en Olga Mouak het publiek naar de grenzen: van landen, van medeleven, van ongemak. Rau maakt mokers. Daar slaat hij mee. Zachtjes. Zo liefdevol dat het pijn doet. – Theaterfestival Boulevard Theatre maker Milo Rau and his team have travelled to some of the political hotspots of our time: the refugee routes from the Middle East and the Congo, which was ravaged by civil war. There he spoke to aid workers, clergymen and war victims. Using this material he made Compassion. In Menuet schetst Louis Paul Boon een driehoeksverhouding tussen een arbeider, zijn echtgenote en de dienstmeid. Het boek heeft een expliciet seksuele thematiek, waardoor een deel van de literaire kritiek verontwaardigd reageerde op Boons ‘vuil-spuiterij’. Maar bovenal is Menuet een magistrale roman over emotionele eenzaam-heid en existentiële vervreemding. In maart 2018 maakte de jonge Nederlandse regisseur Liliane Brakema haar regiedebuut bij NTGent met deze succesvolle productie, knap vertolkt door Lien Wildemeersch, Chris Thys en Bert Luppes.

In Menuet, Louis Paul Boon sketches a relationship between a worker, his wife and their maid. The book has an explicitly sexual theme, as a result of which some of literary critics reacted to Boon’s so-called ‘filthiness’. But above all, Menuet is a masterly novel about emotional loneliness and existential alienation. In March 2018, Liliane Brakema made a successful directing debut at NTGent with this poetic play.

NTGent zet zich in voor een global realisme: kunst en cultuur moeten voor iedereen toegankelijk zijn, een stadstheater moet een plek worden voor postnationaal en postidentitair denken over onze samenleving en in die zin een plek voor het creëren van nieuwe klassiekers. Maar hoe kan dat in deze tijd van nieuwe grenzen en nationalisme? Twee utopische pragmatici discussiëren over het Europa waar ze wel of niet in willen leven. Tickets Gent presenteert en commercialiseert de voorstellingen die NTGent in zijn thuisstad produceert en uitnodigt in het kader van zijn werking als stadstheater. Tickets voor NTGent bestel je dus bij Tickets Gent, ons bespreekbureau dat je bereikt via de doorgang rechts van het NTGent Café. Open van maandag tot vrijdag van 10u tot 18u, op zaterdag van 14u tot 18u en vanaf 1 uur voor aanvang van de voorstellingen aan de avondkassa. Gesloten op zondag. Online bestellen kan uiteraard altijd. Groepen en scholen reserveren via publiekswerking@ntgent.be

Tickets Gent presents and markets the performances produced and initiated by NTGent in its home city as part of its work as a civic theatre. You can order tickets for NTGent at Tickets Gent, our box office which can be accessed through the passageway to the right of the NTGent Café. Open from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm, on Saturday from 2 pm to 6 pm and as from 1 hour before evening performances. Closed on Sundays. Of course, you can always book tickets online. Bookings for groups and schools should be made via publiekswerking@ntgent.be Looking for a gift? We’d be delighted to help you, and always give of our best: theatre with all the trimmings.
