Going gonzo for flugtag Team from Jeffersonville constructs flying contraption BY JASON THOMAS jason.thomas@newsandtribune.com ardboard? Check. Wood? Check. Aluminum tubing? Check. Foam? Check. Ripstop nylon? Most definitely check. A team headquartered in Jeffersonville has been busy constructing a Hunter S. Thompson-themed contraption it hopes will take to the air at Saturday’s Red Bull Flugtag at Louisville’s Waterfront Park. Gleaning inspiration from one of Louisville’s most famous rebels, the team — dubbed Fear and Loathing, after the gonzo journalist’s classic tome, “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” — is blending common materials with the all-too-important ripstop nylon for its chance at immortality.

C

“I feel like we’re kind of the underdog,” said Kirby Kernen, whose garage on Bishop Lane in Jeffersonville has served as the team’s hangar. “We’re just five guys that got accepted. Hopefully we’ll glide to the water and not crash spectacularly.” Self-deprecation that even Thompson would applaud. The Flugtag, German for “flying day,” according to a Red Bull news release, challenges everyday people to build human-powered flying machines and then pilot them off a 22-foot high deck at Waterfront Park. Teams — the first craft flies at 12:15 p.m. — will be judged on three criteria: flight distance, craft creativity and showmanship. With 36 teams vying for glory, it’s a big deal. The other Red Bull Flugtag staged this year in the United States was in Boston — pretty heady company.

FLUGTAG: Local team confident in design's gliding ability CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4 “After months of planning, we can’t wait to showcase the city of Louisville this weekend as Red Bull Flugtag lands in the Ohio River,” Mike Maloney, with special events management with Mayor Greg Fischer’s office, stated in an email. “We believe the values and creativity of our city align with the goals of the competition and we are excited to see all of the crafts on Saturday.” Powering Fear and Loathing, in addition to Kernen, are Simon Kay and Matt Tannahill, both of Louisville, Zac Endicott, Elizabethtown, and Ben Jody, California. The team’s “machine” consists of a wheeled cart, which mimics the “huge red Chevy” convertible featured in Thompson’s drug-fueled diatribe, topped with a grinning, four-foot Thompson head complete with cigarette and cigarette holder firmly clamped in his mouth. Perhaps the most important component is the hang glider painted purple and black to resemble a bat (...“huge bats were swooping and screeching and diving around the car,” Thompson wrote). “I think we’ll glide,” said Kernen, 35, a software developer at Heartland Payment Systems in Jeffersonville. “Just looking at other team’s designs, we may not have the most distance, but I think we’ll glide.” Fear and Loathing is taking the flugtag seriously. It has spent nearly $1,000 of its own money on aluminum piping alone. What would have been its costliest budget item, the ripstop nylon — the same material used in backpacks — came free of charge thanks to a hook-up at a fabric factory in Cleveland. The team has meticulously measured the machine’s center of balance to figure out the best place to push the cart, allowing the glider optimal flight. Oh, and much like Thompson was full of surprises, Fear and Loathing has one of its own: Jody is an actual U.S. Air Force pilot. He’ll be controlling the glider after the cart purposefully crashes to the water.

“I feel fairly confident we should glide, especially since have a pilot who can judge the best angle of approach, whether to point upward or lean down,” Kernen said. “It gives us a little advantage having a pilot.” As for the Thompson theme? Simple: The team wanted to honor one of Louisville’s less-celebrated heroes. Everyone knows the city is famous for the Kentucky Derby and Muhammad Ali. But a flugtag team giving props to a gonzo? That’s the stuff of legend. The sketch of their machine, with that giant, grinning Thompson head, wowed Red Bull officials. The entire Fear and Loathing concept, however, cinched the deal. “I think that’s another reason why they maybe accepted our team,” Kernen said. “It’s something Louisville is famous for but not what Louisville is mainly known for.” With a real pilot at the helm and his teammates muscling the cart Kernen has high hopes. “The cart will go in the water, and hopefully Ben glides gracefully to the water,” he said. “That’s our vision.”
