SES: Seasonal Environmental Science Thinktank (Grades 3-6)

How do the seasons of Northern Michigan affect our biggest environmental problems? How can we create solutions? You will spend a week “diving” into the waters of our area during each season. Will you be the scientist to design a system to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes? Maybe your filtration system will remove the microplastics in the water. Do you have great ideas about slowing sediment runoff and algae blooms? What is the safest way to perform maintenance on the pipeline in the Straits of Mackinac? Grab your inventor cap and help create solutions to these environmental concerns. Perhaps you will discover the answer!

Art is Everywhere! Drawing and Painting the Outdoors (Grades 3-6) The outdoor environment provides endless inspiration for any young artist. Draw and paint plants, animals and landscapes. Create abstract artworks using the wonderful shapes found in nature. Every day after a short walk you will use different materials and create artworks inspired by the great outdoors. Endless Shades of Blue! Drawing and Painting Scenes of Lake Michigan (Grades 3-6) Have you noticed how the color of Lake Michigan changes depending on the sun? Learn how to use different mediums and mix colors to create the varied hues that color the landscapes, sunsets and sailboats of Lake Michigan. Become a safe and confident boater with this fundamental U.S. Power Squadron course. Learn boat terminology, safe watercraft operation, rules and regulations, boat navigation, and communication. We’ll discuss how to deal with a boat in adverse conditions and how to operate a boat trailer and a personal watercraft (PWC). You will also learn how to tie knots that are essential to boating. Cost includes the textbook. You must attend each day and take an exam to earn the U.S. Power Squadron course completion certificate and card. Writing and Publishing: Finding Your Voice (Grades 5-8)

See which magazines publish writing by young people and how to successfully submit your work. As a group, we will make our own magazine featuring the stories written in class—so you will get the chance to see your story IN PRINT! Aeronautics: Up- up- up in the Air! (Grades 3-6)

College for Kids Learning Formats NMC prioritizes your safety and requires everyone to follow safety guidelines outlined at nmc.edu/keep-safe. Face to Face courses (pgs. 4-17) These classes occur face to face in a classroom on campus and most class sizes are limited to 10 or less. Would you like to create an innovative aircraft that can outperform even the most technologically advanced prototypes? Join us on a STEM exploration of all aspects of flight. Kids • Face to Face Simple Machines: Imagineering Your World (Grades 3-6) Are simple machines really that simple? Come along as we investigate how 6 wondrous inventions improve our lives! Jump into a world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Imagine driving a car without axles or not being able to turn your head from side to side. We will dissect chicken wings, create a hovercraft, cultivate a mini-garden, and test our physical strength with a weightlifting experiment! All Aboard the Hogwarts Express (Grades 4-6) Don’t be late! Once you cross platform 9¾, you will be transported to the Hogwarts School for wizardry. Upon arrival, you will be sorted into houses and whisked away to a week of fun—Harry Potter style. Use your wand to mix potions, play wizard games and practice Quidditch. All week, you will earn points in hopes of winning the house cup. End the week on a sweet note with treats from Honeydukes and butter beer you make yourself. Great Tween/Teen Writers’ Machine (Grades 5-8) Expand your mind and discover “limitless writing”. Starting with unique prompts each day, you’ll create new worlds, tell the stories of original characters and get some of your existing ideas down on paper. In this course you will learn all about how to create your very own incredible food package! Add a fun toy or a cool game to include on the back of your box for kids to play while they enjoy your food!

Kids • Face to Face Third Grade Academy with College for Kids Third Grade Academy courses are taught and designed by TCAPS teacher, Jackie Stremlow-Hansen, and aligned with learning benchmarks for students entering third grade in fall 2021. These full-day classes model a school day, but are organized around fun themes and full of hands-on activities blended with academic content. Students practice learning concepts including skip counting (to prepare for multiplication); review addition, subtraction and science concepts; and practice writing connections and personal narratives. They work collaboratively to complete tasks and activities. Dress for a mess as this learning will be fun, messy and experiential. There is a supervised lunch break at noon and regular outside breaks.

Third Grade Academy: Learning and Creating Outside (Grade 3) Spend a week working on projects to show off outside at your home! Projects include building your own birdhouse, fairy house/gnome home, bug village and more. We will infuse fun outdoor themed math, science and language arts learning activities to prepare for 3rd grade but don’t worry, this week will not feel like anything other than a fun week of summer with play, art and exploration! Third Grade Academy: Third Grade Academy: Animal Research Lab (Grade 3) Learning in Color Did you know that sea otters hold (Grade 3) hands while sleeping so they don’t float apart? Did you know that over 60% of living creatures live in the rainforest but that rainforests only make up 6% of the Earth’s land surface? We will explore the rainforest, desert, ocean, polar and wetland animal habitats to learn about the unique animals that call these regions home. Fun animal-themed math, science and language arts learning activities will be infused to prepare for 3rd grade - but don’t worry, this week will not feel like anything other than a fun week of summer with play, art and exploration! You will create animal inspired projects, taste regional foods and learn more fun facts about these amazing animals! Kids • Face to Face STEM Camp for Grades 3-6 Summer is here, and it’s time to explore the chemical and physical aspects of our natural world! Join STEM educator Janine Winkler for week-long adventures in Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Engineering and more! In week 1, learn about rocks and minerals, build a glacier, and take a rock recess to find your own specimens to investigate with your own tools. Week 2 focuses on the magic of science all around us, and week 3 is all about science sleuthing to solve a mystery and imagining new inventions that can change the world. Each week is guided by a new STEM curriculum filled with hands-on activities; register for each week separately, join us for one, two, or all three weeks! Wear closed toe shoes. Camp Hawk Owl (Grades 3-6)

Explore the fabulous feel of clay while making useful and unique objects. Use pinch, slab, and coil methods to create original items and glaze them. Make a clay relief sculpture that is also a bowl, an animal that whistles or rattles, or a vase with a face! Items are fired at the end of the first week and ready for glazing the following Tuesday. You will be notified when the finished pieces are ready to pick up. Dress for an artsy mess. This class meets Mon.-Fri. July 12-16 plus the following Tues., July 20, for glazing.

Camp is a great time to explore new hobbies and learn new games! Are you curious about the tiny worlds we share with other living things in the outdoors? Have you ever wanted to learn the strategy of chess? How about becoming a magician or a master artist? In week 1, learn about bugs and their habitats in the morning and learn the game of chess in the afternoon! Week 2 focuses on magic and art! Learn to perform magic tricks in the morning and develop your skills as an artist in the afternoon. Explore the fascinating world of critters that fly and crawl. Go on daily hunts to locate, observe, count, and collect exciting critters like butterflies, dragonflies, ants, spiders and worms. You’ll learn to catch them with nets to add to your custom-made habitat. Then, after your lunch break you will join the world of Rooks, Knights, Bishops, Pawns, Kings and Queens. Stretch your skills with strategies and tactics for opening, capturing and winning—checkmate! Chess is perfect for those who are drawn to learning something new, enjoy pondering and sitting for periods of time, and appreciate focusing on the game at hand. Chess sets are provided for inclass use, but feel free to bring your own. You’ll be outside most mornings (weather permitting), so wear shoes and clothes that can get dirty.

In the afternoon you will expand your artistic talents by mimicking the styles of the most celebrated and talented artists: Seurat, Chagall, O’Keefe and others. GRASP Reading and Math At-Home Program (Grades K-8) Help your child (grades K–8) stay on top of language arts and/or math skills this summer with GRASP—guided at-home mail-in programs that have shown great success in helping children retain critical skills. Whether you are home for the summer or on the road, this flexible program goes with you in nine fun, easy-to-use lessons. Open to students in all school districts, the program was developed to align with local, state and national standards common to most schools. Practice mindfulness and meditation to help with stress and anxiety. Learn the groutless Italian method of mosaic tile art. Leelanau artist Adam Phillip Begley trained in Italy and teaches workshops throughout the area for artists of all ages! This class teaches the specific method of placing ceramic tiles close together to create an image. Take home your image after this 4-day class. Bring basic safety goggles. All other supplies provided but you are welcome to bring any extra ceramic tiles you may have from past home improvement projects!

Material art started with mosaics in the ancient world. Join Leelanau artist Adam Phillip Begley and get an introduction to creating your own mosaic fish or bird design. Working with ceramic tile you will cut, arrange, glue and grout your first finished piece to bring home and hang on a wall. Moreover, you will leave with the tools and knowledge of how to create more works of art. Bring rags or cotton towels plus basic safety goggles. Design, build, program and test your own custom-built robots with Vex IQ Robotic kits!
