Lonsdale Avenue Construction

Street Landscaping Care and Maintanence

Beginning in early August, the City is installing underground pipes along the east side of Lonsdale Avenue from 13th Street to 17th Street. This work will accommodate expansion of the Lonsdale Energy Corporation (LEC) district energy system. LEC currently provides highly efficient, renewable and cost effective heat and hot water to 23 buildings in Lower and Central Lonsdale.

During the summer season, it’s particularly important to ensure sidewalks and street signs are clear of shrubs, hedges and tree branches. Hedges growing over sidewalks pose a safety hazard to pedestrians. A reminder that residents are responsible for maintaining the boulevard area in front of their property. Hedges should be at least 18 inches away from the edge of the sidewalk. At street corners, any plantings should be kept to a minimum of 3 feet high to maintain clear sightlines for motorists. For more information, contact the City's Engineering Department at 604-983-7333.

Construction will take approximately 8 weeks to complete. During this time, traffic diversions, parking restrictions and road closures will occur, however, every effort will be made to minimize construction impact. Sidewalks and pedestrian access to all businesses will remain open. Work is scheduled to occur from Monday to Friday, from approximately 7:00am - 4:30pm. For more information, visit www.cnv.org/Construction.

Man could face 11 charges after alleged dangerous driving rampage GREG HOEKSTRA S TA F F R E P O RT E R

T

wo people were sent to hospital Monday night after a man allegedly tore through the streets of North Vancouver on a dangerous driving spree. Police say calls started to pour in to the North Van RCMP detachment around 8:30 p.m. July 25 with reports of a vehicle driving erratically in the Lower Lonsdale area. Officers first responded to the corner of Esplanade and Semisch Avenue, where a man driving a blue Mustang had allegedly accosted another man and woman and then charged at the pair with his car. “Following a short verbal exchange, the driver of the vehicle ran into the woman, launching her over the hood of the car before fleeing the scene,” said RCMP spokesman Sgt. Peter DeVries. “The woman was later taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.” DeVries said police “began to flood the area” in an effort to intercept the driver before he could flee. A few minutes later, police received a report that the same vehicle had approached a group of four women walking near Esplanade and Chesterfield Avenue. “He ordered them to get into his car. When they refused, he struck one of them with his car, pinning her against a pole,” said DeVries. “He then fled the scene leaving a second injured woman behind.” That woman was also taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. As the search for the driver continued, “numerous calls” came in from witnesses who saw a Mustang strike another vehicle near Keith Road and Lonsdale Avenue. “The driver of the car that had been struck

followed the Mustang, which then stopped and rammed into her car twice more before fleeing,” said DeVries. Five minutes later, it’s alleged the same suspect approached a female in an alley near the 1700 Block of Lonsdale Avenue. Police say the driver ordered the woman to get into the car. “When she refused, the driver uttered a death threat and fled the scene,” DeVries said. However, by this point officers had managed to catch up to the suspect’s vehicle, and proceeded to use their police vehicles to “box him in” on 19th Street near Lonsdale. “The driver was arrested without further incident,” said DeVries. “A drug recognition expert was summoned to the scene to perform field sobriety tests on the driver.” The tests indicated the driver was likely under the influence of narcotics, said DeVries, but investigators won’t know exactly what substance until the results of a urine test are presented as evidence in court. Contrary to some media reports, DeVries added, no gun was found inside the vehicle. Mounties are recommending a list of charges against the man, a 44-year-old from Delta. Charges include impaired driving, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, uttering threats, and assault with a weapon (the vehicle). The man could also face two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm, and three counts of failing to remain at the scene of an accident. “We are deeply relieved that nobody was more seriously hurt,” said DeVries. “Two factors can be credited for the absence of more dire consequences: the swift and aggressive response of the RCMP officers, and sheer luck.”

WV cops arrest two men in cab driver beating GREG HOEKSTRA S TA F F R E P O RT E R

P

olice are recommending a slew of charges against two men who allegedly threatened, assaulted and robbed a taxi driver in West Vancouver this past weekend. On Saturday, July 23, police received a call from the distressed cab driver saying he had been attacked in the area of Mathias Road and Rivers Road on the Squamish Nation Reserve. Reports indicate the two men roughed up the driver after getting into a dispute over fare prices. Police say the men tried to steal the cab after beating the driver, but fled when they realized police were approaching. “West Vancouver Police quickly responded and located two males that fit the description a short distance away,” said WVPD spokesperson Cpl. Jag Johal Monday. “Both males were arrested. A subsequent search of their person revealed property belonging to the victim and a small quantity of what police believe is cocaine.” Johal said investigators are recommending charges of robbery, possession of stolen property, uttering threats, breaching an undertaking, and possession of a controlled substance. The two suspects — a 27-year-old North Vancouver man and a 24-year-old male of no fixed address — have not been identified. ghoekstra@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/greghoekstra

Seaspan shipbuilding bid nets $60M in support

CNV Coun. Craig Keating supports the Chilean government’s work in acknowledging the human rights violations that took place on its controversial ship, the Esmerelda. But, until Chile’s Navy also admits to the vessel’s horrific past, he doesn’t want the city to officially welcome the Esmerleda when it docks in North Van next month .

GREG HOEKSTRA S TA F F R E P O RT E R

T

he federal government now has sixty million reasons to award a lucrative national shipbuilding contract to North Vancouver-based company Seaspan. On Monday, Pat Bell, B.C.’s minister of jobs, tourism and innovation, announced the province will chip in $40 million if the multi-billion dollar National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy brings new jobs to the North Shore. An additional $20 million in support was pledged by officials at BC Ferries. Seaspan is bidding to win one of two work packages up for grabs in the $35-billion national plan. If successful, the company will secure contracts to construct, repair, refit and maintain large vessels for the next three decades — which could generate thousands of new jobs and inject billions into B.C. economy. Bell said the province will provide $35 million in the form of training and labour tax credits if Seaspan wins one of the contracts. Another $5 million will be invested in the marine sector to support the industry’s long-term viability. BC Ferries, meanwhile, has promised $20 million to help increase the capacity of the province’s repair and maintenance industry. “Nothing will help B.C.’s marine sector better than by securing a long-term federal shipbuilding contract,” said BC Ferries president David Hahn. “A strong shipbuilding and repair sector in B.C. is important for us to receive competitive pricing as we maintain and upgrade our fleet in the future.” Seaspan will likely have to wait until the fall to learn whether it has been successful in its bid. It is competing against shipyards in Quebec, Ontario and Nova Scotia. Jonathan Whitworth, CEO of Seaspan, said he is feeling optimistic that this week’s support will help the company edge out its competition in Eastern Canada.

CNV reconsiders welcoming controversial Chilean tall ship; Coun. Bob Fearnley says Chile ‘deserves our respect’ SEAN KOLENKO

Augustus Pinochet, Amnesty International and Chile’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission have documented more than 100 cases of torture onboard the vessel. “The events that took place on that ship are tragic, there’s no doubt about it,” Fearnley told The Outlook, in an interview last week. “But any country that finds itself on the other side of this, trying to dig itself out of such a history deserves our respect. And Chile is doing that.” Chilean courts are currently investigating approximately one-third of the more than 3,000 deaths, of which two were former Chilean presidents, during the Pinochet regime. Last year, Chile opened the Museo de La Memoria y Derechos Humanos, the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, in Santiago, a glasswalled, permanent reminder of the horrors endured by the country. Michelle Bachelet, former Chilean president and current executive director of the equality organization UN Women, opened the museum. Coun. Craig Keating, who tabled the motion not to welcome the ship, did not

dispute Fearnley’s assertions that the Chilean government has taken steps to right past wrongs, but said the sticking t would have been a “simple but powpoint for him was the Chilean Navy’s erful” gesture, said Mayor Darrell refusal to acknowledge the Esmerelda’s Mussatto, for the City of North ghosts. ity of North Vancouver residents will likely have plenty of names to choose from when municipal elections come around this fall, but they won’t have their say on the future of the city’s busiest rec centre. Coun. Bob Fearnley’s motion to attach a referendum question on the future of the Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre to this fall’s election ballot was defeated 4-3 at Monday night’s final council meeting before summer break. Fearnley said he wanted to hear the public’s opinion on whether the city should renovate the aging structure, or build a new one. “I believe in democracy and our job is doing the people’s business,” Fearnley told The Outlook. “And what better way to do the people’s business than to ask them for their word on the project? This issue is stalled, basically waiting for next election because of this divided council.” What to do with the centre has been a hotlydebated issue at city hall. Council passed conflicting motions on the fate of the building this year, first choosing to build a new structure north of 23rd Street, then deciding to explore renovation after voting to preserve two adjacent fields in the area that would have housed a new building. Other councillors questioned the effectiveness of a referendum question for such a detailed process, noting a simple yes or no decision doesn’t capture the breadth of information needed to understand the intricate debate. Multiple studies have been conducted on the buildings, advocating for both renovation and rebuilding. Coun. Rod Clark, an opponent of the referendum idea, noted the centre’s “perfectly usable ice sheet” would be expensive to tear down but said the pool needs to be replaced. Handling the future of the community centre, he said, will have to be conducted in phases and residents should not be asked to make a black-and-white

A yes or no question is too simple for rec centre decision, says councillors who voted against a referendum question in November’s municipal election. File photo choice because a ballot may ask them to. “I cannot support the referendum question in its current form. It [a new Harry Jerome centre] will be a mix of things, some parts new and some parts renovation,” added Coun. Craig Keating. “And how are we to pay for it too? We need a question that encompasses all of those things. We need authoritative statements and reports from staff. A referendum will be vacant of that and it is far too important of an issue.” Council will revisit the debate in the fall.

Thank you . . . to the many hundreds of volunteers who were fundamental in bringing this event to the level of excellence we achieved. On behalf of the 35th Elders Gathering we would like to express our gratefulness to our Elders who attended all our planning meetings throughout the year with their knowledge and support. Our Core Planning Group, Coordinators and Volunteers, provided input and tireless commitment to the planning process, which lead to the success of the 35th Annual Elders Gathering. Their respectful participation was a success and welcomed over 5000 participants. The 35th Elders Gathering could not have taken place without our sponsors. And I did very well in that program, against the odds. No one thought a diabetic should be on our team,” says Chris Jarvis, who represented Canada in the 2008 Olympics. He’s inspiring young diabetics such as Sophia Meilen to discover how to manage their disease while leading an active life. Sean Kolenko photo

An Olympian’s challenge Former Olympic rower Chris Jarvis leads a five-day adventure camp for young diabetics

I

t would be easy to stop and just let it all go, says former Olympic rower Chris Jarvis. A small prick of the finger and quick scan of blood sugar levels may not sound like much to someone living without diabetes, but to a diabetic, it can be a very big deal. A change in mindset, he says, is needed. One’s goal shouldn’t be to run away from diabetes, it should be to accept it. And a supportive community — where diabetics can swap stories, tips and see what issues others struggle with — is step one. “You can feel like there is no hope sometimes. Clinics can do some things, help you underCOFFEE stand certain situations you WITH may face. But other situations can surprise you,” says Jarvis, Sean Kolenko noting that even as a member skolenko@northshore outlook.com of the national rowing team, he didn’t receive sufficient support for his condition. “Your sugar level can change so quickly. Emotions can spike them, and make you feel quite awful.” Jarvis, a native Ontarian, was in B.C. last week hosting what he called a “five-day youth adventure camp” for young diabetics looking to connect with others living with the disease, and take part in some exercise. As part of the “I Challenge Diabetes” campaign — a nationwide not-for-profit movement started by Jarvis — local participants took part in hikes in Garibaldi Provincial Park and on the Grouse Grind, as well as a trip to the Silverstar Mountain Resort in Vernon, B.C. The athletic challenges of the week were structured so those taking part could push each other physically and see how their bodies responded to the activities. As a group, they could then figure out ways of “getting back on track,” says Jarvis, and learning how to effectively plan to prevent difficult situations in the future. After a day of being active, adds Jarvis, those in the group took note of how much medicine they used and adjusted their next day’s doses accordingly. “It’s nice to be around other diabetics, it energizes me. It’s inspiring,” says Sophia Meilen, an adventure camp participant. “It was a really exciting experience; they were my first hikes ever. And we were all super proud

of each other. I felt great about myself.” Committing to Jarvis’ camp, at least initially, was a difficult decision for the 17-year-old Meilen. Between the ages of 15 and 16, Meilen, a native of Germany, was forced to live in what she calls “diabetic rehab” — a strict “school” where diabetics were forced to monitor their blood sugars, but weren’t taught the bigger picture of diabetes. Nor were they encouraged to learn from others. “There was some nervousness to come tour programs based on past experiences. I understand, I’ve been in a lot of bad places,” says Jarvis. “I used to look at other athletes and they just had to eat, sleep and row. And so did I, but I had all this extra stuff as well. And I did very well in that program, against the odds. No one thought a diabetic should be on our team.” With so much time dedicated to inspiring others these days, it would be easy to cut Jarvis some slack for letting his sporting goals slip a bit. But he hasn’t. Jarvis says he’s looking forward to leading a team of diabetics in the Canadian Death Race, a 125-km race with 17,000 feet of elevation change, and running a half Iron Man marathon this fall. Because outreach can be a time-consuming task, Jarvis has decided not to train for the 2012 Olympics and will instead focus on his not-forprofit work. The inspiration that people like Meilin give him, he says, makes up for any missing athletic highs, however. When you’re training for the Games, you eat, sleep and breathe your sport. That’s what it takes to play on such a stage. But having been there once, the chance to help others was too good to pass up. “There are so many on our team, it is really tearful to leave B.C.,” says Jarvis, smiling. “This was such an amazing experience. Sure I made a sacrifice from that elite status to do the community thing. But I love what I’m doing.” For more information on the “I Challenge Diabetes” program, visit the website at www. ichallengediabetes.org.

CAT’S scream, you scream, we all scream for . . . Okay, it’s not ice cream EYE exactly, but according to hundreds of teenage girls, it was definitely worth screaming about. Last week, Pinkberry frozen yogurt opened Cat Barr its first store in Canada in West Vancouver at The Village at Park cbarr@westvancouver.com Royal Shopping Centre. The hip West Hollywood treat, popular with movie stars like Lindsay Lohan, also caused a big stir by bringing along local actor and Glee TV heartthrob Cory Monteith. Monteith and his band, Bonnie Dune, played two sets and signed autographs to the squealing delight of starstruck teens. Also last week, the North Vancouver Chamber held its Summer Soiree evening at Seymour Golf and Country Club. It was a chance to welcome new members, celebrate milestones and introduce new board members for the upcoming year.

Third time’s a charm West Van-bred Olympian Nikola Girke sets her sights on a podium finish at the 2012 Games in London SEAN KOLENKO S TA F F R E P O RT E R

here’s a certain nervousness about competing in the Olympics, says Nikola Girke. After all, there are a few sets of eyes watching. But any nail biting is quickly replaced by hope and the chance to do something amazing. “The hardest, biggest part of the Games is definitely getting there,” says the West Vancouver-bred Girke. “But the opening ceremony is incredible, awe inspiring. Seeing a stadium full of people is amazing.” For many athletes, the chance to don the maple leaf and compete for Canada in the Olympics would likely satisfy even the most competitive of urges. But for Girke, there’s always the next challenge. Her first Olympic foray was in 2004, at the Games in Athens. Asked by a childhood sailing competitor, Jennifer Provan, to be part her crew — Girke learned to sail as a youngster at West Van’s Eagle Harbour Yacht Club, before joining a competitive team at the Royal Vancouver club as a teenager — the duo placed 13th. In 2008, Girke competed as the lone Canadian female windsurfer, In 2004, Nikola Girke competed in finishing 17th in a pool of 27. the sailing competition at the Athens The transition, however, didn’t come hurOlympics. Athletes, she says, are always “looking for money” and without the help she receives from various level of government, the Canadian Yachting Association, the Canadian Athletes Now fund and West Vancouver-based Chapman Land Surveying, her sporting pursuits would be next to impossible. But competition is addictive, and as she heads into the final year before the 2012 Games in London, Girke says her sights are firmly set on a podium finish. She will once again compete in the windsurfing discipline, and has been travelling the world training in preparation. In early July, Girke was in Spain working out at the Spanish Olympic team’s training centre in Santander, on Spain’s Atlantic coast. This week she’s off to Weymouth, England, the Olympic windsurfing venue, where she won her first two World Cup races in June. She’s getting comfortable there, she says cautiously, which bodes well for the big show next July and August. “So much is left up to chance in this ® sport,” says Girke, noting the Olympics take place in any wind conditions and athletes must be ready for whatever comes their way. “When you make the medals, it doesn’t really matter what colour it is.” For more on Nikola Sound that seems to surround you, delivered by proprietary Truespace® technology. B.C. DAY

Finding her voice North Vancouver’s folk music queen Kyla Rawlyns celebrates B.C. Day with a concert at Lonsdale Quay’s Summerfest GREG HOEKSTRA S TA F F R E P O RT E R

I

t’s been nearly a decade since Kyla Rawlyns stood in front of a panel of Canadian Idol judges in a cold, dark, empty room in downtown Vancouver. The North Vancouver resident had waited outside for nearly seven hours for the chance to audition for the reality TV show’s debut season. Dressed in bright red, the opera-trained singer entered the room confidently and belted out Doris Day’s classic “Que Sera, Sera.” She followed it up with one of her favourite Martina McBride songs, for good measure. “And then, I just stood there. There was a really awkward silence,” recalls Rawlyns with a smile. “They told me they didn’t know what to do with me. So they asked me to leave the room.” After what seemed like an eternity, the judges called Rawlyns back in. The final verdict, she says, was not what she’d been hoping for. “They told me I wasn’t ‘mouldable.’ And that’s when I realized they were looking at me as a product, not at my talents,” she says. “I guess it made me realize that wasn’t

what I actually wanted, even though I thought for the longest time that it was.” Instead, Rawlyns took the news as a sign that she had to carve her own path. And, in the years since, she’s worked hard to do just that. In addition to opening her own business — an organic and vegan eatery, Buddha-Full, in North Vancouver’s Lower Lonsdale district — the talented songstress is now putting the final touches on her debut full-length album with the Kyla Rawlyns Band. The group, which formed a few years ago, has played shows on various stages across the North Shore, at events such as the Harmony Arts Festival, the Cates Concert Series, Party at the Pier and Summerfest. Rawlyns describes the music as a fusion of her favorites, including folk, rock and jazz. She says the songs tend to be upbeat, with some “signature dark lyrical laments” penned by her and Geremie Voigt, her roommate, best friend, and business partner. She likens her sound to that of one of her favourite Canadian bands, the Cowboy Junkies. The songs on her upcoming album, she adds, tend to wander down one of two avenues. Some explore themes of love and undiscovered romance, while

North Van’s Kyla Rawlyns trained for a year at Malaspina University’s opera program before deciding to pursue a career as a singer-songwriter instead. “I was singing in German, in French, and I just wasn’t feeling it,” says Rawlyns. “I wanted people to understand my words. To relate to certain moments.” others touch on issues of environmental importance. “I try to only write about things that I know,” she says, sitting outside her business during an afternoon rain shower. “That’s advice that Shari Ulrich once gave me at a songwriting workshop and I took it to heart.” Most nights it’s not uncommon to hear Rawlyns’s voice spilling into the streets of Lower Lonsdale long after midnight, as she sits at the communal

piano in Buddha-Full, working out some of her songwriting kinks. Since moving to the North Shore in 2002, Rawlyns says she and Voigt have lived on every corner of the First and Lonsdale intersection. To date, no one has complained about her voice filling the nighttime air. “Let’s just say that the neighbours down here are great,” she laughs. “It’s such a great community. It’s home.” It’s also the setting for her upcoming music video, “Crossed Paths,” which she hopes will be released sometime in the coming month. “Lower Lonsdale has been a huge support and inspiration. I feel like this is my nest,” she says. As a local musician and booking agent for the North Shore Green Markets, Rawlyns says there are some exciting things happening right now in the local music scene. There’s a lot of talent in North Vancouver and West Vancouver, says Rawlyns, but there should be more festivals and venues for those acts to perform at. “I’d love to see the music scene develop more and I’d love to see more people coming out for shows,” she says. This Monday, Aug. 1, Rawlyns and her band will perform at Lonsdale Quay as part of Summerfest. The concert, which begins at 1 p.m. and coincides with BC Day, will also include family celebrations such as face painting, balloons, and BC flags. Childhood memories and summer traditions

O

ne of my fondest childhood memories was going to our cottage in Ontario for the summer when school was out. My parents would pack the station wagon with our summer belongings and my dad would drop us off with mom, to return on weekends. I recall playing a card game, best be described as competitive group solitaire, at the kitchen table ZOOM until late into the night and ZOOM well past our Denise Kelly bedtime. denise.play@gmail.com I think it was most special because my parents would play with us, bringing much laughter. As a family of six, along with the odd cousin, those solitaire games were pretty lively. I still remember clutching my cards, kneeling on the hard kitchen chair, watching the Aces appear in the centre of the table. I couldn’t reach, but that didn’t stop me from playing with the grownups. Rituals and family traditions at any age can be special and something the entire family can hold onto, including grandparents. Similar experiences can occur with special friends or relatives in your community. Having that special bond with a group doing something you look forward to is all

part of healthy living and socialization, an important aspect of aging. Sometimes having something to hold onto and look forward to when faced with challenges along the way can make a difference. Maintaining rituals is as important as the experience itself. In our family, these intergenerational traditions helped to encourage bonding with my own parents. Maybe if we all tried to create and maintain more simple traditions this might help bridge the gap between the generations and help maintain familial strength. And why not reach out to a friend or a family member and start new traditions? It is never too late to do so. Oh and playing card games like group solitaire with our own kids is priceless, especially when their grandparents or friends can join in. This year as we head off on our annual summer retreat, the kids will surely pack their cards. Denise Kelly is a North Vancouver Boomer living with her two children, husband and dog Mel. She looks forward to sharing stories to motivate others. Follow her on twitter at TheBoomerVine or email denise.play@gmail.com.

What you may not be tempted to experience, however, are the tensions that inevitably ensue between long-married couples on a lengthy road trip, which are so candidly described in this wonderful travel tale.

Journey to the Edge of the World by Billy Connolly Scotland’s most famous comedian semi-circumnavigates Canada, from Lunenburg, Nova Scotia through the Northwest Passage, to Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island, visiting some very remote, scenic spots that most of us will never see, while finding and creating humour along the way. A different sort of crossCanada adventure, this title is also available in the library on DVD.

The Rough Guide First Time around the World by Doug Lansky A part of the Rough Guide series, this trip planner is aimed at the potential world traveller. It is not a guidebook but a primer to help the reader decide where to go, how to go and what to take (or not to take). Best of all, the book offers helpful hints to consider before heading to certain countries. For example, the famous Victoria Falls in Zambia is now more like Niagara Falls, with bungee jumping and an adventure park – a crossroads for African backpackers, not a remote spectacular drop in the Zambezi River. And did you know that public baths in Japan are relatively cheap and sometimes free, offering herbal ingredients or stimulating electric shocks? Hard Surface: In Search of the Canadian Road by Peter Unwin As the title suggests, this is a provocative investigation of roads and highways throughout our country. Unwin searches history for stories that inform us, amuse us, and inspire us to take a road trip of our own! The author, a prolific writer of Canadian popular history, invites us to journey along with him in search of our true selves - and a decent 12-inch hot dog! Elizabeth Austin is, until August, a librarian at the North Vancouver District Public Library’s Parkgate Branch Library. She is already planning her retirement travel.

Those people who didn’t vote for us are likely illiterate, or have dead tastebuds. Don’t associate with these people--they will only ask you to read news articles to them while chewing on cardboard. Stick with the successful people, procreate, and make little success babies. The North

Shoreline really rocks as a place of inspiration

BE

T

he reigning king of the local music scene is North Vancouver's David Coles. Better known as Kyprios, the hip-hop artist and songwriter won first place and $100,500 in the Peak Performance Project last fall. He has credited his high school days at Saint Thomas Aquinas Secondary for introducing him to the rhythmic verse. Where is your favourite place on the North Shore to write music or to gain inspiration to write music, and why? I love writing at the Caulfield Rocks in West Van. I went there a lot as a teenager and we would always try to find a quiet spot on the water, start a fire, have some drinks and begin a cipher. It’s a beautiful spot overlooking Stanley Park, Lion’s Gate Bridge and flanked by the Pacific mountains. The spot is almost as much a distraction as an inspiration. Where is the craziest, most out there place that you have performed on the North Shore? I played a hoe down at a horse stable in North Van once. There were these three Siamese cats there that kept jumping on stage when we were playing: Pepsi, Kiki and Snoopy. If you had some music industry executives over to the North Shore for a lunch meeting, where would you chow down? The District, bottom of Lonsdale. Those are really good people bringing a unique dining experience to the North Shore. Good service, good menu, good location, good times. Gambrinus is also a good look. If I need a quick hit you’ll find me at Kingston putting down some jerk chicken, best in the city. I also have a small Nando’s fetish. Too many good spots and I haven’t even left Lonsdale... What is your go-to place for emergency hoarse throat remedies on the North Shore? Mom’s house, Lynn Valley. She works with a doctor and

Maria Spitale-Leisk asks som North Shore personalities w they love most about hom

If hip-hop artist Kyprios feels a cold coming on, where's the first place he turns to? Mom's house, of course. I’m a baby when I get sick.. There is also always honey, chamomile tea, orange juice and a couch to lay out on. If I’m sick and on the North Shore, look up Kathy Coles if you’re looking for me and I’ll be mooching off of her. What is your dream North Shore outdoor setting for a concert, and why? Kirkstone Park. That’s home court for me. I’ve got so many fond memories of soccer, baseball, football and bocce tournaments there that I would love to do something for the families of that community. I’ve wanted to do an outdoor concert in North Van forever but I’ve never looked into cutting the bureaucratic tape that walls off such venues from live performance; still think it would be great. You seem to have an affinity for hats. Where on the North Shore does one find a hat with personality? The North Shore needs more outlets for better/original hat selection. I had the blue Lynn Valley Little League baseball cap rocked in regular rotation and lost it a few years back. If you know where those are distributed, let me know and I’ll represent for sure!

Give me the night, enthuses the new Miss BC

N

ewly-crowned Miss BC Cheryl Dietrich says the North Shore’s natural beauty inspires her every day. In addition to her charity work in the community, the 26-year-old currently holds down two jobs: career counsellor at a real estate learning lab in West Vancouver and event planner.

Shore at its

ST

Where on the North Shore have you found the piece de resistance for a wedding or special event? Right now I am really excited about the night market that takes place on Friday evenings down at Lonsdale Quay. The expansion and development of the whole area is amazing and would be a great spot for a special event such as this. I think it’s such an awesome thing to do on a Friday night with friends, family or even as a date. Good food, good music and good company! I see you are involved in the real estate industry. Where on the North Shore would you build your dream house? I would love to own a home in Deep Cove right on the water. The ocean heals my soul so the closer I can be, the better!

Thursday, July 28, 2011 29 Where does Miss BC shop for shoes on the North Shore? For my runners, North Shore Athletics. And for my day-to-day footwear I love cute flats from the little boutique stores in Edgemont Village. A Sunday morning in Edgemont Village is the best!

Where on the North Shore does Miss BC go to escape the limelight or to be alone with her thoughts? Being close to the ocean is so calming for me so I always head for the water. The pier down at Lonsdale Quay is the most common place for me to go to catch my breath, work out my thoughts and take a moment to be grateful for this beautiful city I live in.

Morning host is humming a happy tune

L

ongtime QM/FM morning host of the Mike and Tara Show - and equally loyal North Vancouver resident - Tara McGuire is an outdoor gal at heart. She regularly traverses the mighty Cleveland Dam by way of the adjacent wooded trails. And if you check her MP3 player, there is no doubt a handful of local artists will pop up in the shuffle. Her son Holden, daughter Lyla and husband Cam Mollard cheered McGuire on at the BMO Vancouver half-marathon three years ago, her first ever. Since the North Shore is full of famous musical talent, who do you listen to while stuck in a traffic jam on the Upper Levels? Funny you should ask because I was stuck on the Upper Levels yesterday and it was the amazing Sarah McLachlan that got me through it. Her Laws of Illusion CD hasn’t left my car since the day it came out. We went to both Summer Sessions concerts at Ambleside and were just blessed to see those incredible artists right on our gorgeous backyard. You support a local organization (Athletics for Kids) that ensures all youth have access to sports. Where on the North Shore do you like to break a sweat? I have done some training sessions at Level 10 (ouch!). I like to swim at the West Van pool while my kids are in their lessons, and lately I have been really getting into Y Yoga in Lynn Valley. This spring I took part in the Sun Run Training clinic at Karen Magnussen and love to jog with my dog in the Cap Canyon trails off of Rabbit Lane and up and over the dam. It’s so beautiful and the air is really rich in there. If it’s pouring rain the trees shelter you and if it’s too hot (which it hasn’t been this year) the forest knocks down the heat too. Working in radio you must have early mornings.

When Tara McGuire gets stuck in traffic, the beauty and the music of the North Shore come to her rescue.

Where is your go-to place for a java fix on the North Shore? Well, I’m a tea drinker rather than a coffee fan, but I love the awesome Corner Store in Pemberton Heights. It’s a little oasis with really well-trained baristas, yummy snacks and comfy Adirondack chairs to relax in. Where is the strangest place on the North Shore that someone has recognized your voice and started a conversation with you? Oh, that doesn’t happen to me.... I’m not really known for my pipes!

uno-award winning singer Shari Ulrich has settled in nicely in the peaceful community of Bowen Island with her partner, local jazz great Bill Runge. There she can open her windows and take in the fresh air as she immerses herself in the creative process that goes into her songwriting.

Shari embraces the values of environmental conservation and applauds companies that vocally uphold those values. Zazou Salon Spa - whose motto is “think globally, act locally - and Enviroshake Roofing - which uses recycled materials to create faux cedar shakes, are in tune with her. “When everything has to be shipped off an island, you have different sensibilities about what you want to throw out ,” says Shari.

Shari embraces style and comfort in a fushia-grey Joseph Ribkoff dress from

Amenities and retail indulgences on the North Shore are just a quick 20-minute ferry ride away for Shari. She recently discovered Aldila Boutique on Lonsdale where she purchased her latest pair of go-to jeans.

Shari’s 21-year-old daughter, Julia Graff, absorbed her mom’s melodic energy and became a singer herself. Julia studies psychology and music technology at McGill University in Montreal. Her childhood friend Ted Littlemore also studies music at McGill and tours with Shari and Julia around B.C. during the summer break.

Lounging around and relaxing with a good read is what residents enjoy best about life on Bowen Island. Couch Potato, The Sofa Co. has sofas to keep Shari cozy in the wintertime in front of the fire; meanwhile, Crystalview Pool & Spa carries outdoor patio furniture that will weather all seasons.

“I’ve always been a sucker for three-part harmonies, so I’m in heaven with this trio,” says Shari.

Read on to learn how this mother, daughter and best friend singing trio spent One Day in July.

It's important to feel comfortable with your hair stylist when you are spending a couple of hours together in close quarters. Both Shari and Julia were able to convey to Lindsey Taylor - senior stylist at Zazou salon and spa the exact style they were looking for. (Taylor was recently voted best stylist on the North Shore by readers of the Outlook newspaper.). Shari chose an updo of loose curls while Julia let her long, wavy hair softly frame her face.

Shari has a fan in Zazou manager John Cowie who gladly receives Shari's latest CD entitled "find our way".

After settling in her chair with a warm cup of herbal tea, Shari opened up about her early years as a singer/ songwriter on the Canadian music scene. She recently met the son, Mike, whom she gave up for adoption when she was a teenager. "He had a wonderful childhood," affirms Shari, speaking about her son's adoptive parents. Mike now plays with her band whenever he can escape his thriving career as an architect in Oregon. Shari has released 19 albums in total, as a solo artist and as part of various groups. She fondly remember meeting fellow Canadian musician Joni Mitchell at her home in Southern California. "It was right on the water," says Shari. "[Joni and I] talked and talked all night." Shari earned two Junos and was inducted into the British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame. Julia travelled with her mom across the country on tour all the way to Nova Scotia and as far north as Shari and Julia's Alaska. team at Shari heads over to the makeup station Zazou where naturally-derived jane iredale prodwas senior hair stylist ucts sit colourfully on display. Instead of lugging in the patio furniture during those periods of summer showers, consider choosing outdoor loungers and love seats made from more durable materials. Crystalview Pool Spa & Patio in North Vancouver carries Sokül patio furniture which is created with custom-designed polyfiber weave material: it's non-toxic, 100 per cent recyclable, UV, salt, chlorine, water, and stain resistant. Sokul also withstands temperatures from freezing cold to extreme heat. Crystalview is your all-season source for entertaining. In the summer check out their wide selection of barbecues including high-end brands such as Napoleon. Shari and Julia have a penchant for grilled veggies. Green Tree Roofing owner Jason Lopez shows Shari & Julia a sample of Enviroshake's faux cedar shingle.

You can't help but want to preserve the world's green spaces when you live amongst the trees. Shari was impressed with Green Tree Roofing owner Jason Lopez's presentation on Enviroshake faux cedar shingles. Enviroshake offers the trifecta in roofing: cost savings, aesthetics and environmentally friendly. The company has created a composite roof shake - made from 95 per cent recycled materials - that is maintenance-free, mold and insect-resistant and comes with a lifetime warranty. Lopez stands in front of a home near Horseshoe Bay that is outfitted with an Enviroshake roof. "Studies have shown that Enviroshake is predicted to last 89 years before it looks like it needs to be replaced," he explains. "Traditional asphalt lasts about 12 or 13 years before it starts to look worn. Replacing a roof that often has a tremendous environmental footprint." Green Tree Roofing hires roofers who respect their customers and the task at hand, and have planned their business operations around how to make the least impact on the environment.

Green Tree Roofing owner Jason Lopez, above and right, incorporates environmental sustainability practices into his business.

Province approves MV waste plan KEVIN DIAKIW BLACK PRESS

T

he province has endorsed the regional waste plan, which includes the incineration of garbage. The region adopted the Integrated Solid Waste and Resource Management Plan (ISWRMP) a year ago this week. On Monday, Minister of Environment Terry Lake gave it his approval. Aside from incineration, plan also calls for an aggressive push for increased recycling and composting of household organics. The ISWRMP was the result of an exhaustive public consultation and involves several methods of waste disposal as the region attempts to cut down the amount of garbage headed for the landfill. The targets are an 80 per cent diversion in the amount of waste heading for landfills, which are quickly hitting their maximum allowable intake. “But even with high diversion rates, we still need to deal with the more than one million tonnes of waste we cannot recycle, and the new plan does that by focusing on the recovery of materials and energy from the garbage that remains,” Metro board chair Lois Jackson said Monday. Part of the plan is to compost all residential organics by 2012 and by 2015, banning all such food and kitchen waste from landfills. At least one green group is upset. “Decisions like this one today would seem to suggest that Minister Lake sees his job as helping big companies get around dealing with environmental concerns, rather than actually protecting our environment,” said Ben West, healthy communities campaigner with the Wilderness Committee. “The real fight will begin when they pick a location and try to build one of these pollution-spewing garbage-burning monsters,” said West. “We will be there to make sure people know the truth about what is being proposed in their backyard.”

Eugene Wong’s bucket is filling up Diego that summer, he became the first Canadian to capture that tourney contested by players from dozens of countries. Those performances earned him Sport BC’s Junior Athlete of the Year and a scholarship to the University of Oregon where his sophomore year’s play in 2010 resulted in Wong being honoured with the Jack Nicklaus Award as the NCAA’s Division 1 golfer of the year. Previous winners include current pros Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Stewart Cink, Charles Howell III, David Duval, Luke Donald and Hunter Mahan. Wong faced all but the injured Woods in his first PGA Tour appearance as the lone amateur among 120 entrants in The Memorial Tournament in Ohio in June. His rocky opening round 80, which included five bogeys and a triple bogey, was followed by an up-and-down par 72 consisting of six birdies and six bogeys. He didn’t make the cut but he did beat Kris Blanks who finished sec-

LEN CORBEN SPORTS COLUMNIST

I

f 20-year-old Eugene Wong of North Vancouver has a bucket list of golf tournaments he’d like to play in, the RBC Canadian Open is one he can check off as of last week. Mind you, his bucket is already pretty full. In fact it all started with a bucket of balls at the Takaya Golf Centre in North Van when he was not quite three years old and his parents, Felix and Joyce Wong – who were not golfers – decided the family should try the sport thanks to a special offer that the then-new driving range had at the time. It turned out Eugene had a knack for golf. He was the first to win the B.C. high school individual championship (in May 2008, the year he graduated from Handsworth Secondary), the B.C. junior and B.C. amateur all in the same year. And when he won the Callaway Junior World Championships in San

ond to Sean O’Hair at the superbly run 2011 RBC Canadian Open that wound up Sunday after a playoff hole at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in front of an appreciative, sunbaked crowd. Wong, one of five amateurs in a very strong field of 156 who qualified or received invitations, improved with rounds of 74 and 76 on a tougher course, though he still didn’t make the cut. He parred 15 of 18 holes the first day, including nine in a row; and carded three birdies and five pars on the second, giving in to bogeys both days on the first and 11th holes and double bogeys on the ultra-tough 18th. Mind you, he had plenty of company. Not one player had a bogey free round over the challenging par-70 course, the first time that’s happened in 13 months of PGA tourneys. Even the pros were s-puttering it seems. lencorben@yahoo.ca

Painters Brian Romer (far left) and Alfonso Tejada (left) are two of the artists who will share some secrets of their craft at the Harmony Arts Festival’s “ArtSpeaks” workshops. Submitted photos

Explore your creative side at Harmony Arts Festival More than two dozen workshops cover everything from mosaics to writing to Chinese brush painting GREG HOEKSTRA S TA F F R E P O RT E R

I

f you’ve ever dreamt of painting a masterpiece, snapping a poster-worthy photo, or penning the next great Canadian novel, the Harmony Arts Festival has something for you. The annual 10-day celebration of the arts — which features an array of concerts, film screenings and gallery tours throughout West Vancouver — begins this Friday, July 29. This year, one of the highlights promises to be the festival’s series of artist talks, workshops and hands-on demonstrations known as “ArtSpeaks.” During each day of the festival, artists will be at West Van’s Ferry Building Gallery sharing insights on their craft, revealing their sources of inspiration and, in many cases, giving lessons on how to explore one’s own creativity at home. Ruth Payne, visual arts coordinator for the Ferry Building Gallery, first started the ArtSpeaks program about 10 years ago, after seeing a need for a hands-on element to the popular Harmony Arts Festival. “I wanted people to have a chance to get their hands dirty,” says Payne. “People like to look at art, they like to buy art, but they also like to make it. This allows people to become a part of the experience.” Since launching the program,

Payne has seen it grow from a handful of artists to more than two dozen of B.C.’s most talented and creative people in 2011. “I truly believe there is a visual arts experience here for everyone,” she says of this year’s line-up. “There’s a lot of diversity in disciplines this year.” ArtSpeaks begins Saturday (July 30) with demonstrations by four artists, including a watercolour workshop by plein art painter Alfonso Tejada and an oil painting demo by renowned artist Cori Creed. That same day, internationally recognized Squamish Nation master carver Xwa Lack Tun will demonstrate wood carving, while Joanne Waters teaches visitors how to create baskets, lamps and sculptures from bull kelp and other beachcombings. On Sunday (July 31) Vancouver painter and teacher Dene Croft will take “a contemporary look at masters’ techniques” in a live demonstration outside the gallery. Inside, photographer and globetrotter Peter Langer will share some of the images captured during his travels to more than 160 countries and will discuss the intricacies of photographing different cultures. Throughout the following week the gallery will play host to many more workshops, including “An Afternoon with Three Printmakers,” “A Passion for Fibre,” “Hands-On

Mosaics,” and “Quick on the Draw.” On Aug. 1, acrylic artist Dusty Hagerud will help wannabe painters put brush to canvas in his workshop “Paint Your Own Masterpiece.” The following day, social media guru and author Rebecca Coleman will help artists create a social media strategy to market their artwork using blogs, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. There will be a Chinese brush painting workshops, exotic fabrics and handicrafts from around the world, and even a peace flag-making seminar led by Payne herself. “The workshops are great, because they spark people’s creativity,” says Payne. “It’s a chance to take a bit of a risk. To learn how to paint or

draw in a relaxed environment. Often after that introduction, people will start taking art classes.” Plus, the view from the ArtSpeaks tent, overlooking the beach and ocean, is pretty tough to beat. “It’s the most inspiring and creative venue in the country,” she says. Most of the 25 ArtSpeaks workshops are free of charge and all are open to the public. The only time there will be a fee, notes Payne, is if there are material costs that need to be covered. For more info, including a full workshop schedule, visit www.harmonyarts.ca/artspeaks. ghoekstra@northshoreoutlook.com twitter.com/greghoekstra
