CLINICAL TRIALS UPDATE The Society’s annual list of clinical trials in MS is now available online at www.nationalMSsociety.org/clinicaltrials. It features 130 studies that are in progress or recently completed. These cover neuro-protective agents; symptom medications; rehabilitation interventions such as cycling for improving MS-related depression, mobility and cognitive function; and more. More than 52,000 volunteers have participated or are currently participating in these studies. Their participation—and yours—makes it possible to look forward to new therapies for MS. Pediatric MS Studies Receive Federal Support The Society’s network of Pediatric MS Centers has been awarded a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to study genetic and environmental risk factors for MS in children with the disease. The study will enroll children and teens with MS and matched controls without MS for a single visit to one of 10 centers around the country— in California, New York, Massachusetts, Alabama, Minnesota, Texas, Pennsylvania and Washington. Four new centers are part of this project in addition to the six created with support from the Society’s Promise: 2010 campaign. To learn more about the study including referral information, please email janace.hart@ucsf.edu or call 415-514-2476. R E S E A R C H CCSVI studies— one year update The first-year progress reports from seven National MS Society funded studies of CCSVI, or chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency, were released July 14, 2011. The research teams report being on track in collecting objective and comprehensive data. The studies were launched with an excess of $2.4 million commitment from the National MS Society and MS Society of Canada. The research teams recruited a broad spectrum of people with and without MS. Already more than 486 people have been scanned using various imaging technologies. Only by refining imaging methods can investigators more reliably validate if a person actually has CCSVI and better understand its relationship to the MS disease process. The full results, to be released after completion, will help guide future steps, including the development of clinical trials to test whether treating CCSVI is safe and effective for people with MS. In the meantime, several of the teams will present preliminary p Us l e H results at medical meetings later en! e r G this year. he 25th Anniversary of the Zimmerman MS Bike Ride presented by Mack Cycle and Fitness was a tremendous success. In yet another challenging year, our riders, volunteers, fundraisers and sponsors showed their overwhelming dedication towards finding a cure for MS by raising nearly $1.8 million. The ride started from the Maroone Start/Finish Village at Homestead-Miami Speedway with a grand Nascar entrance. Cyclists cruised along and celebrated at the 42Below Village at John Pennekamp Park, which included appetizing food selections, live music, and cocktails provided by 42Below Vodka. On behalf of the MS Bike team and staff we would like to thank all the participants who joined together in raising awareness and funds to create a world free of MS.

ue to the increased costs associated with healthcare delivery, patients are likely to see increases in their out-of-pocket costs. MS disease modifying drugs can run in excess of $2,000 a month. To share the burden of rising pharmaceutical costs, some employers are requiring patients to pay 20-30 percentage of the cost of specialty drugs. After the Medicare Part D program began in 2006, insurance plans passed along increases for biologic drugs. Therefore, out-of-pocket expenses have soared for these drugs that fall into “specialty tiers” (either because of the way they’re made, their costs or both). Unfortunately, MS patients will fall into this category as well.

According to Kaiser Health News (August 23), “While some say that requiring higher patient payments is a useful tool to control drug spending, others warn their employer clients that the approach could discourage workers from taking needed medications.” This is a high concern for the National MS Society and several states have begun filing legislation to further analyze the specialty tiers. We are working on collecting patient stories who have been affected by specialty tiers and willing to tell their story. This will not be an overnight issue solved by drafting a bill. If you are interested in telling your story please email your tale to jenna.paladino@nmss.org. Try to keep it under 200 words, include your contact information and Jenna will respond if your story is used.

t’s no surprise that the 31st annual CBM of America, Inc. MS Golf Tournament, held in May, was a huge success! More than $92,000 was raised to support much needed local programs and services by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, South Florida Chapter. The pairing party and auction hosted by Smoke On the Water Cigar Bar in Weston got the golfers excited and set the tone for the next day. 148 golfers gathered at the beautiful Boca Lago Country Club in their bold and bright Loudmouth shorts ready tee off and enjoy a little friendly competition while on the course. Participants also indulged in several appetizers and beverages throughout the tournament provided by Hooters, Outback Steakhouse, Flora Fine Foods, Celsius, Boar’s Head, Pollo Campero, Slainte Irish Pub and Grey Goose. As always, the day came to an end with a delicious buffet lunch, awards

ceremony and a much anticipated silent auction and raffle. Surrounded by fellow players and local sports celebrities, this year’s first place MS Golf Tournament trophy was proudly presented to Marco Carrasco, Dr. Carlos Ramirez-Calderon, Carlos Ortiz and Dr. Jose Vargas. The National MS Society would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the tournaments title sponsor, CBM of America, Inc. and the outstanding committee members lead by event chair, Stuart Kosh. 2011 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEES

The South Florida Chapter awarded scholarships to the following seniors: Victoria Faur, Rory McCormack, Jennifer Mollohan, Adam Newton, Jenna-Lee Sheehan, Lauren Siwek and Megan Zucker. A graduate from Mariner High School in Naples, Victoria Faur, will be attending the University of Central Florida to study Hospitality Management. Her father has lived with MS since she was 4 years old. Victoria’s father is unable to be out in the sun for long periods of time, which lead to him not attending her horseback riding lessons. The disease has taught her to be more responsible and to help out, both characteristics for her to be successful in her desired field. Rory McCormack graduated from William T. Dwyer High School. Six years ago, Rory’s dad passed away with complications from MS. The loss of her father affects her daily and it shaped her into the mature young woman she is today. Rory will travel to Nashville, Tennessee to attend Vanderbilt University where she hopes to bring a positive change to the world. Jennifer Mollohan will attend Florida Gulf Coast University to focus on legal studies.

Her mother has lived with MS since Jennifer was a little girl. Although it is difficult for her mother to take on daily tasks around the house, she manages to cook and clean. Jennifer’s believes her mom is as a true inspiration from her strength and determination. Her goal is to make her mom proud.

but she worries she may inherit the disease later in life. MS isn’t known for being genetically transferable, but not only does her grandmother have MS, but her great grandfather had MS as well. Lauren received a scholarship that will help her attend FAU in the fall and study business administration.

Adam Newton, a recent graduate from Forest Hill High School, received a scholarship with his essay on his experience with MS. His mother was diagnosed with MS when he was 10 years old. He witnessed his mom lose her ability to walk; progressing from a cane to a motorized scooter. Even though his family has been through tough times, he believes his mother’s diagnosis has made him the person he is today. Adam is independent and determined to never give up on his hopes and dreams. He will attend Palm Beach Community College to focus in the medial field.

Megan Zucker graduated from Coral Reef Senior High School. Her mother was diagnosed with MS when she was very young. She grew up a little quicker than most teenagers. Over the years she has learned to appreciate life and value her family. Megan gives her mother daily injections to help fight MS. As a tribute to her mother, Megan cofounded a charitable foundation which raises awareness of an individuals struggle to cope with the confinement of spending a large part of their day in a wheelchair. Megan will be heading to UF to pursue her dreams and aspirations in the fall to focus her studies on pre occupational therapy and health sciences.

Jenna-Lee Sheehan will pursue her dream of becoming a dental hygienist at Edison State College. She is considered a true blessing to her family. When her father died five years ago, she was left to care for her mother alone. Jenna-Lee’s mother lives with systematic lupus, fibromyalgia and MS. Her mom is her greatest supporter. Going to college will make Jenna-Lee’s mom pleased! Lauren Siwek is a Cooper City High graduate. Lauren’s dad has multiple sclerosis. In her words, MS affects her emotionally. When she first found out her dad had MS, she wasn’t sure of how serious it was. Watching him battle MS hasn’t been easy,

This year was a “different species of a camp” as we ventured out to Busch Gardens Adventure Camp in Tampa for an amazing fun-filled weekend! Kids ages 7-12 joined together to share and explore new ways to cope with daily pressures of living with a parent or grandparent with MS.

The Whimsical Women’s retreat took place on July 29-31, 2011 at the Renaissance Plantation Hotel. The theme of the retreat focused on pampering, entertainment, MS education and physical health. The weekend gave the ladies an opportunity to share stories and experiences, make long-lasting friendships and create memories to last a lifetime! Activities included a M.A.D. (Making a Difference) Tea Party with a hat contest and special guest speaker Camille Walker author of 29 gifts and aquatics, yoga, tai-chi, and self-defense classes. Entertainment fulfilled the evenings with karaoke, bingo, games and a movie night.

Experts presented on a variety of topics such as color therapy, healthy and simple cooking, MS and sexuality, MS and relationships, gadgets and gizmos, and music therapy.

In June the Casino Royal Men’s Day 2011 took place at the Renaissance Plantation Hotel. The men enjoyed a delicious lunch which included an inspiring presentation by MS ambassador of the Mid-Florida Chapter and Orange County and Osceola County “Ants” Support Group Leader, Jeffery Hamilton. The day wrapped up with entertainment (blackjack, craps, poker, Texas hold’em and horse races), relaxing massages and much more!

T

he National Multiple Sclerosis Society scholarship program helps students affected by multiple sclerosis pursue a college education. It is open to high school seniors who live with MS or have a parent living with MS. The 2011 recipients shared their personal stories describing the impact MS has had on their life and achieving their dreams by going to college.

Throughout the weekend they participated in many activities which included: Tiger and Rhino Encounters, Coaster Physics, Activity Zoo Hospital Experience, Australia, Morocco, Myombe and Jungala Explorations, Camp Fire Story Telling, MS Experience Activities, Twilight Safari and much more. Kids Camp is funded in part by a grant from Minto Foundation, Inc.

Financial Assistance Fund Many people with multiple sclerosis live on limited resources and an exacerbation or progression of the disease can make it difficult to maintain employment or make ends meet. A temporary misfortune may be averted through financial assistance with outstanding rent or mortgage, utility bill, home care, drug co-pay, durable medical equipment, cost of an examination by a neurologist or more.

Please help someone in need overcome a crisis this holiday season. A gift of $500 or more will enable an individual with MS and their family move their lives forward. Make a special year end gift to the National MS Society today.

Support Groups

T

he South Florida Chapter has multiple self-help groups throughout the ten counties which provide services to individuals with MS. Self-help groups bring people together who share a common life experience for support, education and mutual aid. Benefits of participating in a self-help group include: learning new information and strategies for confronting problems; finding support from others; the opportunity to help others; and feeling empowered and more self-confident in coping with challenges. The Chapter would like to add support groups for young adults, parents with MS and care partners in both English and Spanish. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers that would like to lead self-help groups once a month in Broward, Miami-Dade, Martin and Collier County. Training will be provided. If you are interested in becoming a self-help group leader, please contact Tanya Dannibale at 1 800 FIGHT MS or email msprograms@fls.nmss.org.
