United in the Fight Against MS The 2012 Zimmerman MS Bike Ride presented by Mack Cycle and Fitness was one of resiliency and tremendous dedication. In probably our most challenging year, our riders, volunteers, fundraisers and sponsors showed their overwhelming dedication towards finding a cure for MS by raising over $1.3 million. Without your support and efforts, we would not be able to serve over 7,000 South Floridians living with MS by providing financial assistance, programs, and services; and to fund local and national research in the fight against MS. Expect big changes in 2013!! Join us as we unveil NEW start and finish lines, an improved route and our new spectacular two-day DOUBLE CENTURY challenge. Create your own journey by selecting the Fifty, Metric Century Plus, or Century mile route option through the scenic backdrop of the Florida Keys. Saturday starts at Florida International University Modesto Maidique Campus and ends at the MS Village in a beautiful Key Largo resort. (Sunday’s start line). Expect the same top notch services, rest stops every 10 miles, an army of SAG vehicles and trained medical personnel throughout our fullysupported route! We thank all the participants who made the most of our joined efforts in raising awareness and funds to create a world free of MS!

Why I Ride

Register Today! Registration is open for the 2013 MS Bike Ride. Visit us online as www. msbikeflorida. org for more information or scan the QR code.

“I ride the MS Bike Ride Breakaway to Key Largo because I STILL CAN!! I have Secondary-Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (SPMS) going on 24 years now. I would like to show others, by my actions, that life doesn’t have to stop on a dime because of a diagnosis of MS. It’s no longer what I can’t do that I focus on; it’s what I CAN DO that matters.” Lanny Carrero Diagnosed with MS in 1988

An unforgettable ride. An unbeatable destination. A world free of MS.

“Power Behind the Pedals” Volunteer Awards It is only through the extraordinary efforts of our volunteers and Committee Members that we are able to put on Florida’s largest cycling event year after year. We are grateful to each and every person who generously lends their time, efforts, and expertise. To honor our most dedicated volunteers, every year we select three incredible individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty. The 2012 “Power Behind the Pedals” recipients are: Mike Blatt: Mike’s commitment and passion has never wavered in his 15 years of service to the MS Bike Ride. He played a vital role this year re-organizing the start line to Homestead-Miami Speedway when the weather affected the ride. His efforts helped ensure a safe ride for everyone. Renee Scoville: Renee is never one to say no! When asked for help, she always finds a way to recruit an army of massage therapists to come out and give our cyclists some TLC after their long ride. Miami Beach Senior High JROTC: Commander Welp and his students volunteered tirelessly to reconstruct the start line at the Homestead-Miami Speedway braving the wind and rain to ensure our riders have a safe experience.

Why We Ride “About 12 years ago, we became aware of Multiple Sclerosis when a good friend of ours was diagnosed with this terrible disease. We wanted to do something to help fight MS, but we had no idea how we could help. We learned about the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, South Florida Chapter events to raise funds and awareness of MS. As we learned more, we decided to step up our involvement; and as a result, Rafael started a cycling team at the office. Ana got involved participating in the walk events; and later, Ana joined the cycling team also. Now we both bike for a world free of MS. The Microsoft cycling team began with 5 people; today, we’ve been able to expand the team to about 50 riders, increasing the amount of the donations year after year.

Ana and Rafael Lara - Team Microsoft Cycling Since 2003

Our thinking has changed through the years as we not only ride on behalf of our good friend, but now we ride on behalf of every family that is affected by MS. We are connected now and have better insights on how our efforts support programs and research to improve lives.”
