We mobilize people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone affected by MS. National Multiple Sclerosis Society Founded in 1946, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has affiliated Chapters serving each of the 50 states including Wisconsin, all striving to address the challenges of living with MS. Research is at the forefront of these initiatives, and thanks to the generosity of volunteers, donors and fundraisers, the Society is funding more MS research, providing more services to people with MS, offering more professional education and furthering more advocacy efforts than any other nonprofit MS organization in the world.

More than 11,000 children, women and men in Wisconsin have been diagnosed with MS, giving the state what is believed to be one of the higher prevalence rates in the nation. Headquartered in Hartland, the Wisconsin Chapter proudly serves those individuals as well as those who love and care for them.

Connections count. They’re what multiple sclerosis destroys, but they’re also the way we will win against this disease. By working together – by connecting with each other – together we drive research for better treatments, provide programs and offer services that help those affected by MS live their best lives until a cure is found. You are one of those connections. That is why we are proud to present you with this report for 2013. It illustrates the progress you helped achieve in Wisconsin, across the nation and around the world. And while the Society is actively collaborating on a global level so that every promising path – every potential connection – to a cure can be pursued, our Chapter remains dedicated to every local, personal connection to MS that drives each of us to do more. You’ll see one of those examples highlighted in these pages as we share the story of Mitch and Sandy Maier and the intersecting connections that deepened their involvement with the MS movement last year.

The Cycle of Connection “HI, MY NAME IS SANDY MAIER AND I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH MS IN 1999. I SPEND MOST OF MY TIME IN A WHEELCHAIR AND CAN DO A LITTLE BIT OF WALKING WITH A FOREARM CRUTCH. ACTUALLY, I CONSIDER MYSELF VERY FORTUNATE CONSIDERING THE POTENTIAL THIS DISEASE HAS TO REALLY MESS THINGS UP.”

That’s how the letter requesting financial assistance began. It was October and Sandy wanted to buy a bicycle so she could exercise on her own. It had been her husband’s idea. Mitch Maier thought a bike would give Sandy a way to get out of the house and exercise while giving them both something they could do together. He stopped at Wildside Adventure Sports in Baraboo and explained his situation to the man behind the counter. “He explained he had a wife he loves but who is unhappy because she’s losing her independence,” recalled that man behind the counter, Jeff Vogtschaller.
Jeff, who happened to be a long-time Bike MS: TOYOTA Best Dam Bike Ride participant, suggested a recumbent tricycle. It would allow Sandy to ride independently while helping her maintain balance. The challenge was the price. It was more than the couple of 28 years could afford. That’s where the National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Wisconsin Chapter came in. Jeff knew from his years riding with Sonic Streamers, a Bike MS team, that donations to the Society were used for MS-related research, programs and services. He knew that included a financial assistance program to help people with MS maintain their independence. He suggested the program to the Maiers, and not long after, with support from the Chapter, delivered a recumbent bike to their home. “Mitch comes in the following week, doesn’t say anything and gives me a hug,” Jeff described. “He said, ‘You can’t imagine how much it’s changed my life and Sandy’s life.’”

in order to generate awareness and raise money as a way of giving back to the Society. “For me, riding means freedom, independence and almost no pain compared to other exercises I have done,” Sandy said. “I have seen and heard zillions of stories on how MS has taken away the ability to do the normal everyday things that people who have their health do. As long as I am capable of riding and helping others, I WILL!”
“The happiness Sandy has demonstrated since is more about her independence than the bicycle itself,” Mitch wrote in a thank you letter to the Wisconsin Chapter, describing how Sandy spent hours riding in November and December, bundled in an oversized coat, baggy sweatpants, a scarf across her face and mismatched gloves. “I stood there in the cold and my eyes started to tear up. I knew exactly how important that bike was to her.” It’s a feeling the Maiers wanted others to know, too. They joined the Sonic Streamers team for the 30th annual Bike MS: TOYOTA Best Dam Bike Ride In addition to providing a way to exercise – which research is showing is beneficial in living with MS –Sandy’s bike gives her mobility and freedom. “She’s suddenly an independent person again. She really can go to the store, go to visit a friend,” says Jeff Vogtschaller, who suggested the National MS Society’s donor-supported financial assistance program to Sandy and her husband, Mitch. “She’s a happy camper.”

Connections in Research The National Multiple Sclerosis Society continues to pursue all promising paths to uncover solutions for everyone with MS, wherever those opportunities exist, with particular focus on progressive MS, nervous system repair and wellness and lifestyle. The significant research progress that occurred in 2013 offers new leads in stopping MS, restoring lost function and ending MS forever. Some of those highlights included:

T he oral therapy Tecfidera was approved by the FDA for relapsing MS. T he Society joined with the National Institutes of Health to launch a therapy trial of the re-purposed therapy ibudilast in primary-progressive and secondary-progressive MS. R esearchers found a possible “biomarker” or indicator that may help predict MS disease progression.

T he first Phase 2 trial was launched of an investigational therapy aimed at stimulating myelin repair in people with MS. T wo mouse studies in the U.S. and Italy showed the potential of stem cells derived from the skin for growing new myelin and for reducing nervous system damage. T hree studies provided clues to nervous system damage and factors controlling myelin repair, which could lead to promising new therapeutic approaches to myelin repair for restoring function in people with MS.

P rogress was made in identifying factors that may combine to increase a person’s chances of developing MS, such as specific genes, infections and lifestyle factors. N ew studies reported that eating fatty fish has the potential to reduce the risk of developing MS, and that smoking increases the risk of developing MS, as does obesity in girls. A global consortium identified 48 new MS risk genes, information that better defines the biological pathways leading to MS and may lead to ways to prevent the disease and improve treatments.

Chapter Highlights from 2013 Connections were made with more than 130 women and men who disclosed to the Chapter that they were newly diagnosed with MS. Each received follow-up phone calls and educational material specific to their diagnosis and needs. Chapter representatives made more than 70 visits to MS clinics throughout the year and met with nearly 340 clients interested in information or who had questions related to MS. Four new self-help groups were added in Wisconsin. Forty groups are operating throughout the state, serving approximately 600 people with MS or who are caregivers for someone with MS. More than $95,000 was provided in financial assistance to 123 individuals to help improve their quality of life and maintain their independence. Items provided included wheel chairs and wheel chair accessories, in-home therapy, respite care, home and auto modifications, and more. MS College Scholarships totaling $43,000 were awarded to 21 Wisconsin students, including one who was recognized as a National Top Scholar. MS Camp Scholarships totaling more than $9,000 were provided to 24 children from families affected by MS, allowing them to attend the accredited Wisconsin summer camp of their choice for up to one week. Nearly 300 individuals affected by MS participated in free, monthly teleconferences designed to make it easier for people to access information on living with MS. Topics included employment, disaster preparedness, fall prevention, exercise and cognition.

The annual MS Summit was held during MS Awareness Week. Nearly 175 attendees heard from six leading Wisconsin MS researchers about the latest in understanding and treating MS. MS Research NOW speaker series events were held in La Crosse and Milwaukee, providing nearly 100 individuals affected by MS with an opportunity to learn from Wisconsin researchers Colleen Hayes, Ph.D., and Aaron Field, M.D., Ph.D. On the Move Madison, a fundraising event to support MS research, was held in September at the Madison Children’s Museum. It included a research update by Aaron Field, M.D., Ph.D. More than $25,000 was raised. MS Connection magazine was delivered to more than 30,000 households each quarter and included helpful information on financial planning, applying for Social Security Disability Insurance and more. Bonnie Dittel, Ph.D., was inducted into the National MS Society’s Volunteer Hall of Fame for her work as a top scientific researcher.

Nearly 1,000 letters and emails were delivered to 120 Wisconsin state representatives and senators in Madison on World MS Day, thanking them for their past support of MS-related issues and asking for continued assistance in the future. More than 100 MS outreach and educational opportunities were provided throughout Wisconsin in 2013. Walk MS rallied more than 11,000 walkers and 550 volunteers at 18 walk sites throughout Wisconsin in the spring. Together they raised $1.3 million. The MS Snowmobile Tour and Bike MS: TOYOTA Best Dam Bike Ride both celebrated 30th Anniversaries in 2013. The snowmobile event, held January 24-26, raised more than $300,000, putting its 30-year fundraising total at $6.7 million. The Best Dam Bike Ride brought together more than 1,700 cyclists and volunteers August 3-4 who raised $1.4 million, bringing its 30-year total to $24.5 million. Challenge Walk MS brought together more than 200 walkers and volunteers for the threeday, 50-mile walk through Door County, Wisconsin, September 20-22. Together they raised more than $400,000.
