Nº 3 Rag & Bone Tenue de Nîmes introducing Rag & Bone New York

Rag & Bone is English slang referring to a junk dealer. http://theblock-mag.com/interview-rag-bone/#more-3218

Background

Principles

Rag & Bone was founded in 2002 as a denim label by Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, two British entrepreneurs without a strict fashion background. The brand grew into a full menswear label in 2004 and a women’s collection followed one year later. At present Rag & Bone is internationally renowned for its ready-to-wear line including accessories and shoes. Rag & Bone is sold in worldfamous stores like Barneys (NYC) as well as in their own four stores in New York. Tenue de Nîmes is proud to announce that it is the first independent Dutch store that will stock the Rag & Bone ladies collection.

The British gentlemen had two very simple ambitions when they started the Rag & Bone brand. The first was that their brand would capture all the clothing their friends would like to wear. Secondly all their garments would be made from the best fabrics available, based on classic designs. As much as possible, Rag & Bone garments are hand-crafted in local American factories, which helps to realize the hand-made look and feel of their designs. To be able to present collections that stand for innovation as well as traditional craftsmanship, Rag and Bone surrounded itself with craftsmen who have been sewing, making patterns and cutting fabric their entire lives. Wainwright and Neville always purposefully collaborate with a variety of young, talented designers as well as people from the traditional New York City garment district such as Martin Greenfield’s Tailors of Brooklyn, for example, and Waterbury Button, the oldest button manufacturer of the United States.

Style All the Rag & Bone designs are known for the brand’s traditional British signature that combines style and tailored perfection. The collections consist of classic, yet modern sportswear that is slightly understated and most of all wearable. For Spring / Summer 2013 Rag & Bone looked at the great outdoors, starting with the Dakar Rally, before exploring military safari and Bedouin culture. ‘I watched the Dakar Rally as a kid, which is how we got into motor sports’, explains Marcus Wainwright. ‘We were interested in the contrast between modern elements - like block colors, leather and technical modern fabrics - juxtaposed with these floaty white and striped pieces inspired by a Bedouin dress.’ ‘We wanted to do a hard and soft contrast and also really explore silhouettes this season’. Proportions range from cropped and body-hugging to oversized. Volume is also introduced in exaggerated details in pockets and sleeves.

British collaboration — Kate Moss x Rag & Bone After the success of the first campaign Rag & Bone just released their second collection video starring British femme fatale Kate Moss. Moss was recently captured by Alasdair McLellan’s lenses for a fresh Rag & Bone campaign. The relationship between Kate Moss and the brand started last season when she featured in the Craig McDean campaign that was shot in North London. It was Rag & Bone’s very first ad campaign since they appeared on the scene several years ago. The brand sees in Kate Moss the personification of the Rag & Bone brand. With this campaign founders Marcus Wainwright and David Neville reiterate and underline their brand values: forgotten quality and ready-to-wear style. No other model has a better understanding and interpretation of ‘every day style’ than Kate Moss. On top of that she has always been the model with a vast range of different faces and looks (Versace vs. Love Magazine or Givenchy vs. Mario Testino to name but a few striking examples). Lest we forget, her ‘basic beauty’ was a key factor in her becoming one of the most successful models of all time. Especially this last aspect shows an interesting parallel between Kate Moss and Rag & Bone and therefore makes the partnership between these English success stories spot on.
