A message from the Head of school 4

June 2013 Dear NFA Alumni: Greetings from the Academy. While the majestic cherry blossoms have come and gone, we continue to appreciate the beauty of the NFA campus every day. On Wednesday evening ( June 5th), hundreds of guests enjoyed the first annual Spring Pops Concert on the front lawn of the school. It was a very special performance opportunity for our choral and instrumental music students and a splendid evening of fun and fellowship for families, community members, and many NFA alums. This is an exceptionally busy time of year on campus featuring many special celebrations of student excellence and, of course, graduation. This year, marks the 155th Commencement Ceremony at the Norwich Free Academy. Our graduates will receive their prestigious NFA diploma on the afternoon of June 21st in our traditional elegant, sophisticated ceremony on the field. The Class of 2013 is a talented, motivated, and compassionate group of young men and women. We are exceptionally proud of each and every student, and I know that they will accomplish great things and continue to lead inspired and purpose-driven lives. We all have reason to be optimistic about the future given the talent, strong core values, and social conscience displayed by the NFA Class of 2013. Members of the Class of 1963 will also participate in the June 21st ceremony as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of their graduation from the Academy. In addition, members of the same class, the Class of 1963, returned to campus to celebrate their 50 year reunion. The planned weekend festivities included a brunch and campus tour Saturday morning, June 15th, and an evening reunion dinner. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, staff and students, let me congratulate the members of the Class of 1963 on this milestone anniversary of their graduation from NFA and thank them for their continued commitment to and support. We value and appreciate your enduring love for our very special and “one of a kind high school. It is my hope that you enjoy a relaxing and enjoyable summer full of special moments and personal fulfillment. If you are in the area, please visit the campus and drop by the Allis House to say hello. I always enjoy meeting proud NFA alums and discussing our Academy. With respect and appreciation,

David J. Klein Head of School

A message from the Alumni Association

This fall I will celebrate my 35th class reunion with fellow graduates from the Class of 1978. While exploring the Academy’s new viewbook, a colorful marketing piece given to prospective students considering an education at NFA, I realized just how much NFA has changed during our short time away. I was overwhelmingly proud as I flipped through every page of this booklet, full of exciting information about opportunities and activities that an incoming freshman or current student can take advantage of to help them be successful in their future – 250 courses, 65 clubs and activities, 8 world languages, 20 Interscholastic athletic programs, 20 AP courses, 50 college credit-bearing courses, and 38 visual and performing arts courses. How lucky these kids are to be a student on NFA’s campus in 2013! What hasn’t changed is the academy community which includes many outstanding alumni. The Alumni Association recognized two of these former students at its annual NFA Legacy Day held in May. Steven Bokoff, Class of 1972, was the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Service Award, and Linda Desrosiers Smith, Class of 1966, was chosen as the Alumni Achievement Award winner. Justin Morin, Class of 2013, was selected as the Alumni Association’s George Ripley Student Humanitarian Award winner. These awards were developed by the Alumni Association to acknowledge the service, commitment and dedication of alumni and current students at NFA. In May, the Norwich Rotary recognized Richard Brewer, Class of 1965, with their prestigious Norwich Native Son Award. The Alumni Association will once again host the Jubilee Reunion at the Norwich Holiday Inn on July 11th. This reunion gives us a chance to reconnect with those alumni who have been out of school for 60 years or more. It’s fascinating to sit and chat with some of these folks and to hear stories from their days at the academy. On August 24th, we’ll get together with those classes who graduated 51-59 years ago in New London at the Port n’ Starboard. These events grow each year as word spreads of the fun everyone had and the friends who were reunited. Let’s not forget the Class of 2013 who officially become part of the Alumni Association on June 21st. The Alumni Board of Directors has had the opportunity to meet many of these fine students through visits to our board meetings. These young people have truly benefited from what is offered at NFA, and we wish them the absolute best as they continue on their journey through life! I look forward to seeing everyone this summer at the Holiday Inn, or Port n’ Starboard, or at graduation festivities on campus. Who loves football? The whole city of Norwich did last fall when our own Wildcats went all the way to the state championship playing against number 3, Xavier of Middletown. Hundreds of fans, including myself, cheered on the team from the bleachers of Rentschler Stadium in East Hartford. Even though it was rainy and cold, we stayed until the end to show our support to a team of young athletes who played the hardest game of the season. Unfortunately they were defeated, but not for lack of heart. Last January NFA said goodbye to Marion J. Murphy of Bozrah who worked as supervisor of baking in the cafeteria for thirty years. Some of you may not know this about Marion, but she was the originator of the famous NFA Apple Goody dessert served to many alumni in earlier years. I was able to get my hands on a copy of this recipe this year and made it several times. The smell of it cooking in my kitchen brought me back to the afternoons that I used to stand in line for a serving of that crunchy snack. Marion left behind a wonderful memory and it is my hope for the Class of 2013 that they, too, take with them a fond memory that lasts a lifetime. Remember, keep in touch.

Gale Eccleston Ennis ’78 President, Alumni Association Board of Directors 5

Celebrations mark an occasion by straying from the ordinary routine to participate in festivities and fun. Celebrations are held for many reasons. NFA has many reasons to celebrate over 160 years of maintaining

Celebrate a sound mission to serve the educational needs of the region’s youth in an unsurpassed manner. In the early years, the Academy’s Cherry Blossom Festival noted the city’s solemn appreciation of NFA’s service to the community. This year, like last, Celebrate NFA – a free campuswide festival of family, fun, food, music, games, recreation, crafts and more – marked all the opportunities and choices the Academy continues to provide for Wildcats of all ages.

On May 18, the Broadway campus was opened and alive with action for children and adults. Highlights included an international food court and shopping bazaar for apparel, jewelry, and hand crafted items sponsored by NFA’s many clubs and activities. Recreational activities include rolling mini and miniature golf, tennis, volleyball, cheerleading, and soccer activities. There were fencing, wrestling, computer assisted drawing, and laser engraving

NFA Day 2013! demonstrations, fashion shows, and performances by the Musicians Club, the Jazz Ensemble, the Chamber Choir, and the Ambassadors.

A Distracted Driving Simulator, a Rubber Duck Race, contests of all kinds, an inflatable Obstacle Course, an inflatable throwing and hitting challenge, a Dunk Tank, and a Zombie Photo Booth were a few of the many engaging activities. Among many features for little Wildcats were the Moon Bounce, an I-Spy Scavenger Hunt, and screen printing t-shirts. A special activity for younger wildcats was the Celebrate NFA Passport. Participants obtained a passport at one of three entry locations and visited and participated in an activity and receive a stamp and signature in each of seven categories: Arts/ Culture; Culinary; Education; Museum: On Stage; Sports/ Rec; and Wildcat Pride. The first 100 to return a completed passport to the Cat Shack, NFA’s school store, won a free Celebrate NFA t-shirt.

The Alumni Association and NFA Foundation have been fortunate over the past several years to have student interns work in our offices, assisting us with many of our day-to-day tasks. For the last two years we have had the pleasure of working with, and getting to know, Shannon Fowler, Class of 2013. Shannon is a well-rounded, intelligent young lady who has taken a wide variety of courses – from basic foods to AP Statistics – trying to find her niche. Last year after she enrolled in an Intro to Photography class, she discovered her passion for design, through both digital and film photography. This passion has led her to decide upon a double major in Marketing and Management when she attends Bryant University in the fall. She fully intends to graduate from college in 3-years, due to the fact she has a completed one full year of college credits while attending NFA! As a student at NFA, Shannon has kept herself quite busy. She played on the soccer and lacrosse teams until she joined the track team at the pole vault pit. Pole vaulting is something she will bring with her to Bryant as she intends to try out for their track team. Shannon has also been involved with the Student Advisory Board, the Norwich Youth Action Council, Amnesty International, Project Outreach, National Honors Society, Spanish National Honors Society, Class of 2013 representative, and a phonathon caller for the Foundation.

THE SLATER MUSEUM SUMMER 2013 When asked what her most favorite moment of her NFA career was she stated, “It’s hard to pick a favorite out of all four years, but my most recent was at the ECC’s when I was able to set my personal best record for the season (8 feet) at a conference championship after a rough start to the season.” In 10 years Shannon sees herself working as a marketing director for a company that allows her to travel. She has always wanted to see the world and knows that whether it’s a part of her future career or not, she intends to do so. She will join several members of her family when she steps onto the stage on June 21 and becomes an alumna of the Academy. Her grandmother Linda Larsen Fowler ’67, father Chester Fowler, Jr. ’88, great-aunt Nancy Larsen ’69, great-uncle Robert Larsen ’73, and cousin Christopher Larsen ’01 all preceded her. Her brother, Jake, will follow in 2016. Congratulations and best wishes to our student intern, Shannon Fowler, on her graduation from the Academy!

The Norwich Free Academy Alumni Association and the NFA Foundation recognized more than one hundred volunteers, students, and members of the faculty and staff during the Academy’s Legacy Day reception on May 6, 2013 at the Norwich Holiday Inn. Throughout NFA’s history, families from generation to generation have shared pride in being graduates of the Academy. So often our teachers inspire our students to the extent that they return to NFA, as alumni, to become teachers themselves. On this evening we celebrated the traditions of NFA and recognized our devoted faculty, our dynamic and enthusiastic students, and our loyal and dedicated alumni who are the legacies of NFA. 18

L to R: Head of School David Klein Ripley Award winner Justin Morin Alumni Association President Gale Eccleston Ennis ‘78 Alumni Achievement Award winner Linda Desrosiers Smith ‘68 Distinguished Service Award winner Steven Bokoff ‘72.

Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award The Alumni Association Board of Directors established the Distinguished Service Award in 2002 to pay tribute to our fellow alumni who have demonstrated dedication and commitment to NFA or the Alumni Association through continued interest, support and service. Our inaugural inductee, known as Mr. NFA around the community, was Bernard L. Savage, Class of 1935. Since our first inductee, we have honored many alumni whose names are very familiar to most and synonymous with NFA…Navick, Swatsburg, Tramontozzi, Donovan, and Phillips to name a few. This year the Alumni Association’s 2013 Alumni Distinguished Service Award recipient was Steven L. Bokoff, Class of 1972. Steve has been a lifelong active member of the Norwich community. After attending Stanton Elementary, Kelly Middle School, Norwich Free Academy and Bryant University, Steve established a growing professional accounting/financial advisory practice as Managing Partner for Goldblatt Bokoff LLC and Thames Financial Management. His deep involvement in our community spans a broad spectrum, including William W. Backus Hospital, Beth Jacob Synagogue, Dime Bank and ECHO Cancer Foundation. From serving on the NFA Foundation, Negotiating, Budget, Investment and numerous other Committees to Chairperson of the Board of Trustees (2007 – 2010), Steve shares a long-standing dedication to Norwich Free Academy. Bokoff family NFA alumni include Steve’s father Robert (’45), daughter Jen (’04) and son Michael (’06). We congratulate Steve Bokoff and thank him for his tireless efforts in support of the Norwich Free Academy.

Alumni Association Alumni Achievement Award The Alumni Achievement Award was created in 2011 to honor alumni who have distinguished themselves through service to their community, their profession or in their chosen field of endeavor. Last year, our first recipient was honored, Dr. John Tauro, Class of 1975, for this selfless work in Haiti through the Haitian Health Foundation. This year Linda Desrosiers Smith, Class of 1966, was selected by the Alumni Board of Directors as the 2013 Alumni Achievement Award Recipient. While a student at the Academy, Linda discovered her interest in accounting and after graduating was employed by a local accounting firm. She returned to school in 1994 to further her education in the field of accounting. She attended Eastern Connecticut State University while continuing to work full-time and received her bachelor’s degree in Accounting in 1998. She then was accepted at the University of Hartford - Barney School of Business and completed a Masters in Professional Accounting in 2000, again while being employed full-time. Linda currently works as the Chief Financial Officer at Reliance House, Inc. in Norwich, which provides community-based, person-centered mental health services in Southeastern Connecticut. They offer thirty-five programs such as Outreach, Residential, Housing, and Career and Educational services for their clients. Her latest civic venture is to bring new excitement to the First Friday monthly events in downtown Norwich. Linda recalls when the downtown Norwich area was active and inviting and would like to be a part of bringing some of that back. Linda is married to former classmate, Bruce Smith, and they have three children and six grandchildren. The Alumni Association is pleased to count Linda among its members and we congratulate her as being selected as the 2013 NFA Alumni Achievement Award Recipient. 19

George Ripley Student Humanitarian Award

Justin Morin

Named for the Alumni Association’s first president, the George Ripley Student Humanitarian Award recognizes an NFA senior who has demonstrated personal character through leadership, altruism, volunteerism and the giving of oneself to the school community. Each year, NFA faculty members are asked to nominate deserving seniors for this most prestigious recognition and this year seven students were nominated for the award. Six of the nominees – Catalina Calachan, Alexa Franchetti, Patrick Kudej, Kyle Liang, Heather Plecan, and Ronny Tavares – were recognized and presented with a special gift from the Alumni Association. Justin Morin was the 2013 George Ripley Students Humanitarian Award recipient, recognized for his work ethic, as well as his strength and depth of character. Justin was presented with a monetary gift and an engraved pen and pencil set by the Association. A gift in Justin’s name was made to Echo Cancer Foundation, a charity that is near and dear to his heart and was accepted by Executive Director, Laura Stevenson-Flom and President Terri Slater.

Catalina Calachan

“It is with immense pleasure and pride that I nominate Justin Morin for the George Ripley Humanitarian Award. Justin is an incredibly hardworking, intelligent and dedicated young man – and most importantly, one who possesses a work ethic matched by strength and depth of character that is remarkable. I can honestly say that Justin is one of the most incredible students that I have ever had the pleasure to work with. In short, I cannot say enough good things about this young man to do him the justice he deserves. He is remarkable.” – Excerpts from Laura Binder’s Letter of Nomination.

Kyle Liang

Nominees Catalina Calachan “I have heard colleagues comment about Catalina Calachan. Words like ‘great student’, ‘kind’, ‘compassionate’ and ‘hard working’ are used to describe her. Ms. Calachan has earned nothing but superior grades and is one of the top students in the class. She is a tireless worker who has helped to organize Homecoming, blood drives, food drives, conferences and toy drives. Her activities and awards are numerous. This young lady has made a very significant contribution to NFA and I give my highest recommendation for the Ripley Award.” – Excerpts from Henry J. Laudone’ s Letter of Nomination

Alexa Franchetti & Patrick Kudej “It is with pride and heart felt enthusiasm that we nominate two amazing students for the George Ripley Student Humanitarian Award. Alexa Franchetti and Patrick Kudej have unselfishly demonstrated the characteristics that embody this prestigious award. Alexa is an exceptional volunteer in our special education classes as a peer tutor and is a devoted Unified and Special Olympic volunteer. Whether in the classroom, on the basketball court, in the lunch room or simply in the hallway offering a high five, she always has our students’ best interest. Patrick, on the other hand, has impacted our students and the community in a very different but powerful way with the production of a video for the “R” Word Campaign. Once he started filming, it became more important for Patrick to showcase the students in a dignified way that would tell their story and please them, than to please us. Patrick’s emotion and sensitivity was clearly portrayed and far exceeded any of our expectations.” – Excerpts from Kathryn Beit’s and Karen DiCrosta’s Letter of Nomination

Kyle Liang “As a science teacher and coach of over fifteen years, I have written many recommendations on behalf of exceptional student-athletes. One of the peculiarities I have noted regarding the process is how much more difficult it is to write letters of recommendation for the ‘best of the best’. Perhaps that is why it is difficult to begin this letter for Kyle Liang. Simply put, Kyle has been everything I could have ever asked for in a student, athlete, leader and community advocate. Everything this gentleman touches turns to gold. He is an extremely talented, driven, charismatic young man. He has fully engrossed himself and will leave NFA a better place. Perhaps that is Kyle’s most endearing character trait. He never asks what you can do for him. He only asks what he can do for others.” – Excerpts from Chad Johnson’s Letter of Nomination 21

Nominees continued Heather Plecan “I first met Heather when she was a student in my colleague’s tenth grade honors English class. I witnessed her quick wit, pleasant demeanor, and solid work ethic just in the few minutes that I was in the room each day. I was thrilled when I saw the “neat kid’s” name on my Creative Writing class list the following year. Not only is Heather an excellent student, but she is a role model outside of the classroom as well. While I realize this award focuses on recognizing students for their positive impact on student life through campus activities, I do not think it is fair to ignore the impact that Heather makes on the campus community through her off campus volunteerism. She works on and for causes about which she feels passionately, and the character she displays while completing each is exemplary. In short, she is more than a ‘good kid’. She is truly exceptional and unique who leads by example.” – Excerpts from Melissa Cassidy’s Letter of Nomination

The reunion has donated to the Academy on an annual basis and this year a cash contribution, in excess of $500, was sent to the Academy’s Reid Fund which assists students in need. It was a bittersweet day for reunion chair, Kitty Thibault Miller who, after chairing the annual event for several years, felt it was time to step down and is hopeful another alum will step up to the plate so this event can continue. Volunteers are needed to work on planning the 2014 event. Without the assistance of our Florida alumni this reunion will not occur. Please contact Linda in the Alumni Office if you would like to become involved with the planning of this event.

On February 18, 2013 the Florida West Coast reunion was held at the Pelican Pointe Country Club in Venice. 90 alumni and guests attended and everyone had a great time. The party even continued after the event ended at the home of Nancy and Bob Parczyk! Ed Lavallee, Venice City Manager and member of the Class of ’65, welcomed folks to beautiful city of Venice. The reunion raised $1,300 which was applied to their pledge to purchase a granite bench outside the Atrium/ Slater Building on campus.

In Memoriam Former NFA mathematics teacher, Gladys Alexander Mallove, Class of 1935, passed away March 20, 2011. In the early 1980s, Gladys presented the Academy with 14” Celestron reflecting telescope that was purchased through a gift on behalf of the Mitchell Mallove Family. The Mallove gift was designated to promote the study of astronomy and to enhance students’ comprehension of the vast complexity of our universe. After 18-months in the planning, the NFA Observatory opened in May of 1981, permitting our students lunar, planetary and the deep sky viewing of the universe. The observatory is currently undergoing a much-needed upgrade, and is not in use at this time. The only original equipment that will still be used is the 14” Celestron telescope that the Mallove Family donated. All of the other elements -- the dome, telescope mount, astroimaging camera, and computers -- are new. This upgrade to the observatory will permit our students and teachers to control it remotely and it will eventually be accessed via the web so astronomical pictures can be taken with the telescope. NFA continues to appreciate the vision and generosity of the Mallove Family in the establishment of the NFA Observatory.

Marion Julia Wenzel Murphy passed away on January 20, 2013 at the age 94. Although Mrs. Murphy did not attend the Academy (her children and grandchildren have) she and thousands of its alumni have something in common. If you asked any alum about their favorite NFA dessert, you are almost guaranteed to get the response “Apple Goody.” Mrs. Murphy worked as Supervisor of Baking at NFA for thirty years and she was the originator of the famous Apple Goody dessert. We are pleased to share this most favorite recipe with our thousands of alumni who we hope will recall fond memories of the Academy and Mrs. Murphy, while enjoying this tasty treat.

Reverend Paul J. Gaumond, Class of 1965, of Essex passed away on December 29, 2012. Father Paul was educated at Norwich Free Academy and went on to study at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield. He continued his undergraduate and post-graduate studies at Christ the King Seminary, Saint Bonaventure University in East Aurora, NY. Father Paul was ordained on May 11, 1974 by Bishop Vincent J. Hines, then Bishop of Norwich in Saint Patrick Cathedral in Norwich. As a priest in the Norwich Diocese, he served in many parishes and was Pastor of Our Lady of Grace Parish, Fishers Island, New York, Sacred Heart Parish in Wauregan, and Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Essex from May 17, 2000 until the time of his death. Father Paul had also served as a Catholic Chaplain at Middlesex Hospital. Father Paul was famous for his wonderful laugh which brought smiles and uplifted spirits. He was an extraordinary priest whose greatness shone in the simple things he did and the love with which he did them. He treated all people with profound kindness and dignity. This faithful servant of God devoted his life to all people, and his greatest joy was bringing souls closer to God. He was a true imitator of Christ. He was a member of the Third Order of Mary and of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus. He was the Essex Fire Engine Company Chaplain and an EMT at several towns in which he ministered. Father Paul loved trains, the holidays, and growing up on his grandfather’s farm. He will be sorely missed by all of his parishioners.
