433 ADULTS WAITING FOR Tallaght Stone Centre SPEECH AND LANGUAGE THERAPY LOCALLY headstones crafted for all cemeteries

TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe has called on the Minister for Health to fill the 11 vacant speech and language posts in CHO7 and invest in services for adults after HSE figures revealed that there are 433 people waiting to access services in the CHO7 area.

Teachta Crowe said: “Recent figures from the HSE have informed

me that there are currently 431 adults accessing speech and language therapy in the CHO7 area that includes Dublin South West. However, there are 433 people still awaiting assessment or access. 51 of whom have been waiting more than two years. “Speech and language therapy for adults is often needed after a stroke or traumatic injury. Swift access is vital to

allow people to regain some of what they have lost and regain some independence and allow them to lead full lives.

“We need a major investment in this area as leaving people in need of speech and language therapy for more than two years is simply denying them the opportunity to progress forward from the ordeal of a stroke

or traumatic injury. Delayed access to basic supports will mean as time goes on, that the therapy needed will have to be more intense and lengthy. “We cannot have people languishing on waiting lists for more than two years waiting to access vital services. We need a major investment in adult speech and language therapy. There are 11 senior posts to be filled in CHO7 alone and I am calling on the Minister for Health to fill these posts as a matter of urgency as the longer they are left vacant, the more the waiting lists will grow and longer it will take for patients to recover.”

A SHOUT OUT TO SOCIAL ENTERPRISES AROUND IRELAND

Organised by the Irish Local Development Network (ILDN), a new Summit for Social Enterprises, SocialiSE, will take place on Wednesday, 29 June 2022 at the F2 Centre in Dublin 2. SocialiSE is specifically focused on raising awareness and supporting social enterprises, through workshops and discussion on a range of topics from funding and finance, digital promotion, community development and social innovation. “Social enterprises do incredible work in Irish communities, providing much needed services while also creating employment in the local

area. The SocialiSE Summit 2022 celebrates social enterprise and encourages more development in this sector by raising awareness of the model” said Joe Saunders, CEO of the ILDN. “Information on the benefits of social enterprises as well as advice on overcoming the set-up challenges will freely available” he added. As business models set up to tackle social, economic or environmental issues, social enterprises engage in commercial activities to pursue these objectives and produce social and community gain. Some are also referred to as Work Integration Social Enterprises, supporting

disadvantaged people or minorities to prepare for, and participate in, the labour market. In Ireland more than 30,000 people work in over 1,400 social enterprises.

Many of these social enterprises will be attending the SocialiSE Summit, to talk to those interested in establishing similar enterprises in their region. Organisations like Galway’s An Mheitheal Rother (Bike Shop), Clondalkin’s ACE Enterprise Park & WALK and the nationwide Paint Reuse Network are among the case studies that will be discussing their models for success in their sectors. Topics such as access to funding, as well as governance, marketing and digital media will be covered by subject matter experts on the day. “We are delighted to be supporting SocialiSE as a key event in the social enterprise calendar. Rural and Community development can be fuelled by the innovative, varied and vital work that social

enterprises do in regions around Ireland. We look forward to communicating further with potential and existing social enterprises on 29 June at the F2 Centre for SocialiSE,” said John Ryan, Higher Executive Officer at

the Social Enterprise Unit at Department of Rural and Community Development.

Socialise Summit 2022 is free to attend, thanks to the support of the Department of Rural and

Community Development, who are supporting this initiative through the ARISE programme, as well as Pobal and the Dormant Accounts Fund. For more information, see www.ildn. ie.

OUTDOOR MARKETS THIS SUMMER IN CORKAGH PARK AND TYMON PARK South Dublin County Council is delighted to announce that both Corkagh and Tymon Parks will be hosting outdoor markets this summer, 2022.

The offerings available include; street food, crafts, artisan produce and live entertainment, providing all the ingredients for a fun filled family day out. After a popular trial run last autumn, Urban Picnic is returning to Corkagh Park in Clondalkin from Saturday the 4th of June, and will take place every Saturday from 11am to 5pm. Urban Picnic will be located near the playground in the park, visible from the car park at St. John’s Entrance. Park Food & Craft Market is a welcome addition for 2022. This market will operate every Saturday from 11am to 4pm and will be held for the first time on Saturday the 11th of June. Tymon Park Food & Craft

Market will be located in Tymon Park, Castletymon Road, Tallaght, next to the playground.

Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr Peter Kavanagh said “This is great news for the parks at Corkagh and Tymon, and for the communities of Clondalkin, Tallaght and the surrounding areas. The markets promise hot food, coffee, sweets and treats, ice cream, artisan produce, crafts, live entertainment and more. It is fantastic for the up and coming local food producers to have an opportunity to showcase their products and not to mention our local live performers entertaining the crowds once again. I encourage the local communities to come along to support and experience all these markets have to offer.” The live entertainment at

both Corkagh and Tymon Park markets is being supported through the Local Live Performance Scheme (LLPS), a South Dublin Arts Office and Dept. of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media initiative. Orla Scannell, Arts Officer said “The scheme is supporting both seasoned and emerging acts to return to the stage. It’s a great opportunity for performers and audiences alike to re-engage and enjoy the wonderful talent on offer in South Dublin.” Both markets will promote local enterprise and develop a sense of community by utilising where possible local producers and crafts people, including Local Enterprise Office South Dublin (LEO) start-up clients. “LEO South Dublin is delighted to collaborate with Dublin’s Outdoors to utilise and develop this

opportunity that our outdoor markets offer to our locally supported food producers. These markets present a fantastic opportunity for our exciting new local artisan producers to showcase their new foods, all of whom will greatly benefit

from the feedback of local consumers.” said Tom Rooney, Head of Enterprise at Local Enterprise Office South Dublin. Outdoor markets support the promotion of the local community, enhance the

attraction of our parks as valuable amenities and improve the tourism offering in the County, which is why South Dublin County Council and Dublin’s Outdoors are excited to welcome you to our markets this summer!

OUTDOOR DINING AND ALCOHOL 1,400 HGV’S USED LAWS EXTENDED KENNELSFORT RD DESPITE BAN Dublin Mid-West TD, Deputy Emer Higgins has welcomed the extension of outdoor dining and alcohol laws as the hospitality sector enters the busy summer season. Deputy Higgins said, “Although the pandemic was hugely challenging for businesses I also think the hospitality sector was accidently revolutionised by Covid-19 restrictions in

some ways – particularly in relation to outdoor dining. “For example, last December I found myself having a late-night drink outside Courtney’s in Lucan which I never would have dreamed of doing in the dark Winter months, nor would Courtney’s probably thought of offering outdoor dining as an option in the Winter evenings, but we all had to adapt and it was

good for business.

“New laws allowed businesses to extend their footprint whether that be in carparks The Laurels or Lord Lucan, or backyards like the graveyard in Kenny’s of Lucan or Annie Mae’s in Newcastle, and I’m glad these laws have been further extended to allow pubs and restaurants across Ireland to continue serve alcohol in outdoor settings lawfully. “Pubs and restaurants are absolutely vital to the social fabric of the towns and villages throughout the local community and I really believe this legislation is good for local business and great for hospitality to recover after the pandemic” said Deputy Higgins.

Minister McEntee’s announcement comes recently after Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien announced that he would instruct local authorities to waive fees

Gardiner said: “These huge private companies are using our roads to make their profits, without giving any thought to how it might impact the local community. “I’ve had residents living on the road report cracked windows in their homes, while others have expressed safety concerns for children. There are a number of schools nearby, and it is hardly ideal to have massive haulers driving down a residential road that many children use to get home.” “As many local people will know, there is already a ban in place, but Gardaí just aren’t enforcing it. Surely the results of this survey, carried out by South Dublin County Council, show that there is a clear need to.” In a report to the council, Chief Executive Daniel McLoughlin came to the conclusion that “the number of HGV movements is low on Kennelsfort Road in comparison to total traffic.” Gardiner, however, believes that this is missing the point. “Although this may be the case, it still means that hundreds of HGVs are using the road daily when, in accordance with the ban, that number should be zero.”

“South Dublin County Council did a superb job at preserving the value of the public realm during the pandemic and it’s great that this will continue for the summer. “Street furniture injects vibrancy into our towns and villages but we also must ensure that we maintain vibrancy and furniture does not cause a hazard and does not take away from the beauty of our towns and villages” said Deputy Higgins. I think this latest announcement will continue to revolutionise the Irish hospitality sector and will bring Ireland in line with our European neighbours when it comes to outdoor hospitality” concluded Deputy Higgins.

A traffic survey has revealed that 1,400 heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) travelled along the Kennelsfort Road in a six-day period, despite the ban on HGVs from using the residential road in Palmerstown. Citing this, Workers’ Party representative and local resident David Gardiner has once again called on Gardaí to finally enforce the ban.

together to tackle the ‘big job’ in the garden, sharing some of the food you have grown or simply a cup of tea to get to know your own food growing community better. It is a chance to get together and realise the power of communal vision and effort.” Lorna Danaher, sponsorship manager for Energia also said ‘We’re so excited to have our second Energia Get Ireland Growing day. INNOVATIVE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME FOR HEALTHCARE ASSISTANTS LAUNCHED

A new and innovative apprenticeship programme that will advance the role of healthcare assistant for care of the older person has been launched by Minister for Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris. The Advanced Healthcare Assistant Practitioner programme allows healthcare assistants to attain QQI Level 6 qualification and is approved by the Apprenticeship Council, offering participants the opportunity to further develop their skills and knowledge and strengthen their career pathway. The programme concept was initially proposed in 2018 and was developed through Griffith College in partnership with Nursing Homes Ireland and other consortium members. Around 250 apprentices are expected to take part over the next three years, fulfilling employment

within nursing homes while learning at Griffith College. 42 men and women already commenced their participation in July and November 2021.

The two-year programme requires the apprentices to learn healthcare assistant skills while working within an older person care setting and attend 30 classroom days a year at Griffith College that supplement the practical skills gained. Expanded knowledge, skills and competencies are attained by the apprentice healthcare assistants pursuing the Level 6 accreditation, with the defined pathway supporting them in achieving stability and providing motivation to complete the programme. For nursing homes and healthcare employers, the apprentices will develop advanced skills to support care of the older person, providing enhanced support to nurses and strengthening

the quality of care within the setting.

The Advanced Healthcare Assistant Practitioner programme launch took place at Nursing Homes Ireland, Citywest recently. Tadhg Daly, NHI CEO states: “There is requirement to ensure our education system is responsive to social care needs of our ageing population. This programme marks an important milestone in the development of the healthcare assistant profession. It will advance the professionalism and the skillset of the role, and enhance its standing as a profession. We hope it will lead to more people considering the immensely rewarding role of healthcare assistant as becoming a more attractive career prospect and support the professional and personal development of those already in the profession.

We are delighted to have partnered with Griffith College to bring this highly innovative programme together to strengthen the career of healthcare assistant. We look forward to further engagement with Minister Harris and Government on the critical matter of workforce planning for the care needs of our older population.” Professor Diarmuid Hegarty, President of Griffith College, states: “Griffith College has a long history of working with industry to ensure our courses meet current skills needs. In developing this national apprenticeship, we have worked closely with the healthcare consortium to develop a practical and applied qualification that will enhance the skills and competencies of their staff in what is a crucial sector of our society.” Mary Liz Trant, Interim Director of the National

Apprenticeship Office states: “The pace of change is accelerating in the national apprenticeship system, with 65 programmes now available, led by the new National Apprenticeship Office. The Advanced Healthcare Assistant Practitioner apprenticeship is a really important and valuable programme as part of the transformation agenda. Our congratulations and thanks to Nursing Homes Ireland and education provider Griffith College for developing an innovative course that meets the 21st century skills needs in Irish healthcare and appeals to a great talent pool of Healthcare Assistant apprentices now and in the future”. Eileen Doyle, a Healthcare Assistant at Knockeen Nursing Home in Co Wexford is a programme participant. She states: “What we are learning

from the programme is supporting best practice within the nursing homes we work within. It is providing us participants with an excellent and very comprehensive pathway to support our professional development. Nurses deliver modules that teach best practice in care of the older person, with peer experience proving extremely valuable in our development and mentors on-hand to support our learning from the best academic research and external supports. The comprehensive structure of the course is leading to a better understanding of why we do what we do at work and the holistic interconnectedness of all aspects of healthcare. The overall feeling from everyone involved is one of positivity, encouragement and progression.” More information at www. griffith.ie/

Central to this innovation were the following Dublinbased businesses which were awarded for their expertise in producing energy efficiency products and services Best Energy Efficient Product Award: Mitsubishi Electric (Dublin 12) for the QAHV CO2 monobloc commercial heat pump which is designed specifically to produce high-temperature sanitary hot water using CO2 as a refrigerant. And Best Innovation Award (Commended): Expert Leisure (Rathcoole) with

SportsArt G690 Verde Treadmill which converts human generated energy into utility grade electricity.

Paul Martin, Programme Manager at SEAI who chaired the judging panel commented “I want to congratulate this year’s winners in the Product of Show Awards. The Government has set ambitious targets over the next ten years and beyond to reduce energyuse in our homes and our dependence on fossil fuels and the products, services and expertise that this year’s winners provide is an important facet of that transition. For many years, the Product of the Show Awards has championed innovative product development. Considerable investment in R&D, coupled with rapidly changing technology, has seen a wave of pioneering products and systems featured at the Show.

The winners all share a passion for a clean energy future and are providing businesses and consumers

with exciting new energy products that will help us use less and use clean.” In addition to the 150

exhibitors in the RDS, the Show featured; an extensive electric vehicle showcase with free test drives, live

retrofit demonstrations, a new lighting pavilion, expert seminars and multiple networking events.

SEAI HOME UPGRADES WAITING TIMES ‘COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE’ TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe has criticised the Government for not resourcing the SEAI in its ability to roll out free energy upgrades to families in receipt of benefits such as carers allowance or fuel allowance. A recent Parliamentary Response received by Teachta Crowe indicates that the average waiting time for a survey is now 13 months and the average for completion of works is a further 14 months.

Teachta Crowe said: “A recent response I received from Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan has told me that the waiting time for SEAI home surveys

is now 13 months and the average for completion of works is a further 14 months. People cannot wait over two years to have this work done. “Without these surveys, works under the free energy upgrade scheme cannot begin and is resulting in homes being saddled with high energy costs when they should be receiving upgrades that will both cut their carbon emissions and reduce costs.

“The households eligible for free energy upgrades are those in receipt of Fuel Allowance, Job Seekers Allowance, Working Family Payment, OneParent Family Payment, Domiciliary Care Allowance,

Carers Allowance or Disability Allowance for over six months with a child under seven. These are the households that need to see their energy bills cut the most and it is unacceptable that the Government has not adequately resourced the SEAI to even assess these homes. “The upgrades themselves are vital as those in older residential properties may be completely lacking in proper insulation or draught proofing. And if you are on fuel allowance for instance, you certainly cannot afford to be pumping heat out through an uninsulated attic or draughty windows. “If the Government was

LAUNCH OF JONATHAN WADE ARTWORKS Launch of an Exhibition of Artworks by Jonathan Wade held on Monday the 23rd of May at the Round Tower Visitor Centre -Brú Chrónáin, great artist who lived and worked in his studio in Clondalkin. Sadly however a motor-bike accident on the frosty Monastery Road near Clondalkin on Sunday, 21st January, 1973, deprived Ireland of one of its most original artists. Jonathan Wade who was just 31 years old at the time, but he had already produced work of such amazing quality and variety that he was looked to as a future towering figure in Irish art. This project was initiated in the New Theatre by the Director, Anthony Fox; with former teacher Jack Harte at

Clondalkin’s Coláiste Chrónáin, Monastery Road, and Wade enthusiasts, Pat Pidgeon and Paul Tuthill, who rallied to the cause; and between the four of them, have attempted to create a lyrical event , which they hope the public will enjoy – enough to seek out more of Wade’s work. And they are delighted to bring this project to Clondalkin where Jonathan spent his adult life and produced his work from a small studio on Knockmenagh Road. The exhibition of artworks by Jonathan Wade in the Round Tower Visitors Centre – Brú Chrónáin - Tower Road will commemorate this great artist and will continue until Sunday 3rd June.

NOVENAS FOR LAURA LYNN MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you for a very special one. Say this prayer for three days. Promise publication and favour will be granted no matter how impossible. Never known to fail. With grateful thanks to Our Lady for favours received.
