CALLS FOR ADDITIONAL BEDS AT TALLAGHT HOSPITAL

South Dublin County Councillor Charlie O’Connor has raised the clear need for additional beds at his local hospital at the monthly meeting of the Regional Health Forum Dublin Mid-Leinster.

He moved the motion “That this Regional Health Forum calls for confirmation of plans for the provision of additional beds in Tallaght University Hospital noting the call by a prominent Tallaght consultant in

that regard which has strong local support” In his contribution to the meeting, attended by senior officials of the HSE, he stressed the pressure on Tallaght University Hospital which first opened in June 1998.

Charlie O’Connor received a detailed response from Trevor Callaghan, CEO of the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group as follows: “Tallaght University Hospital has for a significant period

of time advocated for an increase in bed capacity. TUH is seeing an exponential increase in ED attendances year on year, particularly in patients over 75. They are also seeing an increase in admissions. This coupled with an increasing need to isolate patients in single rooms means that TUH will continue to be challenged with the timely admission of patients from ED. The hospital has identified a need for an additional 72

single rooms and has completed a strategic assessment report which validates the need for the additional beds in the form of a new ward block. The hospital is currently working with its partners in the wider health service to progress these beds to construction phase as quickly as possible. Tallaght University Hospital has increased their bed capacity through access to begin in Tymon North Community Unit, these beds come under the clinical governance of TUH’s Geriatricians. Also, the opening of additional rehabilitation beds in Peamount Healthcare has increased the beds available for patients who require rehabilitation” According to Charlie O’Connor it is important that the campaign for additional beds at Tallaght University Hospital be taken seriously and that a decision to move to construction is taken without delay. He promised to continue to pursue the matter at every opportunity.

CRY IRELAND HONOURS LOVED ONES WHO HAVE DIED FROM SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH Families from across Ireland recently gathered at Kildare’s Irish National Stud and Gardens for a tree planting ceremony by CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) in honour of those who have died from Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD). CRY Ireland – a registered Irish charity – held a Family Support Day to bring together families affected by the loss of a loved one to SCD to share their experiences with one another and speak to accredited professionals

on grief and bereavement support. CRY Ireland facilitates free access to clinical assessments and provides emotional support programmes, including a free helpline to those affected by the loss of someone to SCD or those living with the diagnosis of a cardiac condition. Noelle Condon, Chairperson of CRY Ireland said “We were so grateful to be able to bring families and friends together, from all over Ireland, for our first family support day, which

we hope will be one of many. We wanted to mark the occasion by planting a tree to remember those that have passed but also to create a dedicated space for families to revisit and reflect. “The isolation of the pandemic had left many people grieving alone without the nearby support of friends and families due to Covid-19 restrictions. To be able to bring people together again in a therapeutic and supportive way where those affected could speak to bereavement professionals and meet likeminded people, was really special.”

On the day, families were able to avail of one-to-one support and group talks with experienced professionals who specialise in supporting people through their journey of grief and bereavement. Young people and children in attendance

had the opportunity to explore the grounds and take part in craft and play activities. Guest speakers included Psychotherapist Margaret (Mags) Bowen, Bereavement Counsellor

Kevin Farrell and Kate Burke, Regional Coordinator at Anam Cara, Parental and Sibling Support Group, who shared her own story of grief after she lost her son. Attendees also heard from

Lisa Gannon, Counsellor & Psychotherapist who has been working with CRY Ireland since 2008. For more information on the services of CRY Ireland, please visit cry.ie

CALL FOR PUBLIC HOUSING AS AVERAGE RENT REACHES €1,901 IN SOUTH DUBLIN

The average cost of rent now sits at €1,901 in the South Dublin County Council area, according to a report from the Residential

Tenancies Board. David Gardiner, Workers’ Party representative in Palmerstown-Fonthill, has called for public housing

Cllr. Charlie O’Connor PC Living in Tallaght ...Working for Tallaght

ALWAYS AVAILABLE TO MY CONSTITUENTS.

Living in Tallaght ... Working for Tallaght email charlie.oconnorff@gmail.com mobile 087 2982079 The Fianna Fail Team is Barry Andrews M.E.P, John Lahart TD, Cllrs Yvonne Collins, Teresa Costello, Emma Murphy, Charlie O’Connor & Deirdre O’Donovan

to be built in response. Gardiner said: “Over the course of a year, the average price of rent in south Dublin comes to €22,812. This is almost a grand more than somebody working fulltime on the minimum wage would earn in that same period. How are working people supposed to afford this when combined with an increase in the price of food, energy and fuel?”

“We over rely on the private market for our housing to the extent that councils are happy to give public land away if it means some sort of housing will be built, regardless of the quality. The problem here is that this leaves working people at the mercy of the sky high prices set by private developers and landlords.” “The Workers’ Party believes that access to affordable and quality housing should be a right for working families. Public housing is the only way to make that a reality. This

could be achieved if local councils would stop the sale of public land, like we’ve

seen in O’Devaney Gardens and Kilcarberry, and instead used it to build universally-

accessible public housing, with the price of rent based on income.”

CLONDALKIN RAINBOW CROSSING

Cllr Timmons recently commented on the rainbow crossing in Clondalkin ‘’I am delighted that following my motion South Dublin County Council has installed the first rainbow crossing in Clondalkin Village. It’s fantastic to see this - a strong symbol of equality and anti-hate! The pride colours are a symbol of tolerance, love and acceptance. It also represents how far we have come as a country! Given recent events, the battle against hate has a long way to go! I am convinced that symbols matter to many, I want to send out a clear message of Love, Tolerance and acceptance of the LGBT+ Community’’

LOCAL TD EXPRESSES HORROR TALLAGHT FANS ENJOY IRELAND’S AND OUTRAGE AT LATEST FIRST NATIONAL FITNESS GAMES SCRAMBLER INCIDENT

Dublin South West TD Seán Crowe has said that he is horrified and outraged at the recent incident in Sean Walsh Park in Tallaght involving an out of control scrambler bike and a young child, saying that it was a miracle that the child was not more seriously injured or killed.

Teachta Crowe said: “Our parks and green spaces should be inclusive, safe spaces there for the enjoyment of adults and children of all ages. Unfortunately, this is not the case and incidents involving scrambler and quad bikes are being reported on a daily basis across the country. “This latest incident happened in Tallaght, but it could have happened anywhere and highlights once again for the need for workable legislation

that will remove these dangerous machines from our communities. “I would appeal to anyone who witnessed has camera footage or any information on this attack to come forward to the local Garda investigating this potentially fatal incident. It was a miracle that the child was not more seriously injured or killed. “My colleagues and I in Sinn Fein have been highlighting the danger of scramblers and quad bikes for years in in the Dáil with Ministers, at joint Policing Meetings, and directly with members of Garda authorities at local and national levels. “Our attempts to bring in legislation to address this type of behaviour has been voted down and rejected by government

parties and inexplicably the Garda Press Office said that no new legislation was needed. “Our parks, green spaces and pitches are being destroyed, with many residents afraid to go into them for fear of being injured or worse. This wrong on so many levels and needs to addressed on an urgent basis.

“Children, parents, and adults should feel safe in our public spaces or walking through their neighbourhoods and that is not the case in many parts of my constituency. I am appealing to the Garda Authorities to do more to tackle these scrambler bikes following this incident and calling on the government to wake up and fast track legislation that will remove these bikes from local communities.”

Deputy Higgins attended the opening of the Aberdeen Centre with Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, Minister for State for Mental Health and Older People, Mary Butler, and Councillor Shirley O’Hara. Deputy Higgins said: “I was delighted to join Minister Donnelly, Minister for State, Mary Butler, and Cllr Shirley O’Hara to open the Aberdeen Centre at Peamount Healthcare in Newcastle. “I was so impressed to see the range of services that the Aberdeen Centre has to offer including the 50 additional beds for specialist rehabilitation. “25 beds

Deputy Higgins continued: “The Aberdeen Centre is a great asset to the already fantastic facility that is Peamount Healthcare. The staff do tremendous work, and the new centre will build on that tremendous work. I look forward to seeing its impact on those at the centre. “I am so grateful to

services for members of the community such as a day care service for those in Newcastle, Rathcoole, Clondalkin and Lucan. “It was a privilege to witness the excellent care that the

staff provide at Peamount and I particularly enjoyed hearing from residents and patients who shared their own experience,” said Deputy Higgins. “Peamount Healthcare and the new

Aberdeen Centre will continue supporting and facilitating the community’s health needs and I hope to see it continue to grow and develop its service,” concluded Deputy Higgins.

100K IN 30 DAYS EVENT TO RAISE FUNDS FOR BREAST CANCER RESEARCH Following the success of last year’s 100K in 30 Days event, which raised €1.7 million for Breast Cancer Ireland, organisers are calling on the people of Dublin to join the #pinkarmy and take part in the June event. Registration is now open at www.100kin30days. ie. The event, sponsored by Sherry FitzGerald, is open to everyone - runners, walkers, those in wheelchairs, families, colleagues, schools, community groups, and sports teams. 100K in 30 Days was founded by Co. Louth (Blackrock, Dundalk) couple Niall Carroll and Cara McAdam and launched in 2020 after Cara was diagnosed with breast cancer. Over the last two years, 38,000 people in 36 countries have taken part raising €3million for Breast Cancer Ireland.

Funding has been used for different resources including equipment for a new state-of-the-art

Clinical Trial Centre due to open at the new Breast Centre on the Beaumont Hospital Campus in June. This new Centre will offer truly translational medicine to patients and will change the landscape positively into the future. All of this will take place under one roof under the watchful eye of a multidisciplinary team The Shamrock Trial – a new clinical trial into Her2+ breast cancer that is being created to examine a fourth generation drug and its effectiveness as part of the treatment plan, de-escalating the need for chemotherapy in the process. Research Nurses supporting specialist breast research nurses in the eight designated cancer centres, whose role is to collaborate and collect patient tissue and serum samples into one large national biobank, allowing clinicians and scientists nationally to avail of the full yearly compliment (3,700) and

thereby speeding up research discovery output. Before these nurses were recruited, each Centre may have had 1 paper in 18-24 months, and now in the past year one centre

alone has 12 peer reviewed research papers published, activating new clinical trials. And Triple-Negative breast cancer research - led by Dr Paul Mullan, from the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research at Queens University Belfast. This research, which commenced in October 2018, is now showing very promising results in the fight against the growth and spread of the most aggressive Triple Negative Breast Cancers (TNBC’s). Research is progressing and is close to publication / clinical trial development. Niall Carroll, Founder of 100K in 30 Days, said “The success of the event over last two years, throughout a pandemic, has spurred us on to make 2022 the biggest year yet. We all know someone who has or has had breast cancer and the purpose of 100K in 30 Days is for everyone, young and old, grandparents to grandkids, to have fun and get the daily steps in while raising much needed funds for Breast Cancer Ireland. Over the last two years, we’ve seen €3 million raised which has gone into various research projects but it doesn’t end there. We want to keep raising money to continue these trials so we’ll continue to fund finding a cure for breast cancer. I’m very proud of the success the

pink army has achieved to date and we’d be delighted to see new faces this year. I hope communities all across Ireland get behind it. Cancer isn’t defeated alone. It takes a village. It’s a challenge that can be done in your own time anywhere in the world and you can even get the dog involved!”

finally, we’re supporting our complimentary Education and Outreach programme nationally, educating women and men on the importance of good breast health. Breast Cancer Ireland’s vision is to seek to transform this disease from often being fatal to a treatable long-term illness that can be maintained.”

Aisling Hurley, CEO of Breast Cancer Ireland, said “We’ve seen the hugely positive impact that that funds raised from 100K in 30 Days challenge has had for Breast Cancer Ireland. The funds raised over the last two years have supported a number of important initiatives, most importantly, the creation of a new clinical trial, the Shamrock Trial, which will involve 80 patients around the country. This is a hugely significant trial, in that we’re trying to use a new fourth generation drug, where we hope, as a result, to be in a position to de-escalate the need for chemotherapy for patients and have a 100% response rate. Secondly, we’re supporting our specialist breast research nurses in each of the designated cancer centres. Their role is to collect patient tissue samples, into one large national bio-bank allowing clinicians and scientists to avail of larger volumes and thereby speed up research discovery output. And

Steven McKenna, CEO of Sherry FitzGerald said “We’re delighted to be sponsoring 100K in 30 Days for a second year. We have 100 offices nationwide employing over 600 people and we’ll be taking part in the event in June. Unfortunately there are very few friends, colleagues and family members that haven’t been touched by breast cancer and we’re delighted to be involved helping to play our part to fund finding a cure for breast cancer.” 100K in 30 Days, in aid of Breast Cancer Ireland sponsored by Sherry FitzGerald, takes place over the month of June. For more information and to register, see www.100kin30days.ie. Those who register for 100K in 30 Days and log their distances are also in with a chance to win prizes such as a €5,000 Holiday Voucher, numerous weekends away, children’s prizes, fitbit smart watches and shopping vouchers.

PROGRESS IN PIETA PROVIDING A DUAL DIAGNOSIS SERVICE IS WELCOME

Sinn Féin Spokesperson for Mental Health, Mark Ward TD has welcomed that there has been progress in Pieta providing a treatment for those with dual diagnosis. Dual Diagnosis refers to people who present for treatment who have substance misuse and mental health conditions. Teachta Ward said: “It was confirmed to me by Pieta that they have made progress in providing a dual diagnosis service for those who have suicidal ideation/ self-harm and issues of substance misuse.

“Pieta have told me that they are working closely with National Office of Suicide Prevention and HSE Operations to explore ways that they can an provide more targeted supports at groups that are at particularly high risk of suicide and selfharm, including those with substance use difficulties.

“They are aiming to develop a more collaborative relationship with statutory services and other voluntary services so that they can offer more integrated supports, especially where Pieta’s service could be strengthened by organisations with specialist skills in areas such as substance use difficulties.

“I have been critical of Pieta in the past for not providing this service and I welcome the progress made but now the HSE and Government must provide the supports Pieta need to roll it out “I have had the Dual Diagnosis: No Wrong Door Bill pass first stage in the Oireachtas last year. “Dual Diagnosis refers to people who present for treatment who have substance misuse and mental health conditions. “People who have a Dual Diagnosis often fall between these gaps. Addiction and mental health

often go hand in hand. “An addiction may lead to the onset of mental health issues or a mental health

issue can lead to people using substances as a coping mechanism. “Because of the inadequacies in the state’s

mental health system, people can turn to drink and drugs to give calm to an anxious inner world. “This is

where problems can occur. The mental health problems remain, but are added to by addiction problems”.

Teachta Crowe said: “I was very disappointed when I was contacted by people who were understandably angry and confused after receiving their electricity bills which included the Government’s long promised electricity credit. I do not believe that they should be giving with one hand and immediately clawing back with the other. If they wanted to give people €200 in credit, then they should have given that. “It is typical of how this Government has approached the cost of living crisis. People are really struggling and this Government either doesn’t care or has no idea how to make things easier on people. They seem to think its ok to give with one hand while grabbing it back with the other.”

RATHCOOLE FIRM ANNOUNCES NEW BOARD AND MANAGEMENT APPOINTMENTS

Rathcoole-based construction equipment specialists, McHale Plant Sales – distributors in Ireland of Komatsu, Komatsu Forest, Metso Outotec, Merlo and Terex Ecotec equipment – has announced a number of senior board and management appointments which its chairman, Michael McHale says “will resource the organisation at senior level, reinforce capacity across our various and diversified fields of operation, enable us to capitalise on future growth opportunities that may present, and strengthen the service we give to our customers”. All of significant importance in terms of their expected contribution to the company’s current and future requirements, four

of the appointments are at director level and a further three are to senior management positions. Four appointments are made to the Board of Directors: Kevin Nugent is appointed to the position of Finance Director and Liam Foley to the position of Commercial Director. Denis McGrath is appointed to the position of Sales Director and Anthony Ryan to the position of Aftersales Director. Kevin Nugent previously held the post of Financial Controller for many years and now takes up the position of Finance Director. Liam Foley moves to the new and more broadly focused position of Commercial Director. In his new position as Sales Director, Denis McGrath

succeeds the late John O’Brien, a legendary and admired figure within the industry whose recent death was marked by tributes paid by colleagues across the sector. His appointment as Sales Director recognises, in part, his long service to the company which he joined as an apprentice, graduating over recent years to frontline sales and general management.

The appointment of Anthony Ryan to the position of Aftersales Director is one that gives a voice at board level to all facets of aftersales management. In particular, it recognises the increasing importance that McHale Plant Sales attaches to the broad issue of customer care, one to which Anthony will bring his extensive experience in

after sales management. Other appointments from within the company’s ranks sees Pat Shanahan promoted to the new position of Sales Manager, Keith Carey to the new position of Parts Manager and the promotion of Niall Culligan to the new position of Service Manager.

Commenting, McHale Plant Sales chairman, Michael McHale said: “through these new appointments, an extra strong foundation has been put in place on which the company can plan for future growth and expansion. Drawn from within the company’s own ranks, a team has been appointed that will plan and manage the company’s affairs into the future, all with the experience, product knowledge and market awareness needed

to meet the demands of current and future trade, to deliver on the priorities of

those we represent, and to satisfy the expectations of our customers,” he added.

WINNING THE WAR AGAINST WASTE CRIME

In 2021 the Pure Project removed over 800 individual dumping sites, with the collection of over 144,000kg (144 tonnes) of illegally dumped waste from the remote, beautiful, and scenic Wicklow/Dublin Uplands.

The Pure Project has made huge progress in reducing illegal dumping in the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands. If you compare the amount of dumping collected by Pure in 2021, which was 144 tonnes of waste, to 2008 which was their busiest year, when they removed 440 tonnes, the project has seen a 67% reduction in illegal dumping in Wicklow/ Dublin Uplands. However, the project has stressed the importance of not becoming complacent, which they believe would lead to an increase of dumping in the uplands. The Pure Truck is on the road every day, and since the project was established, Pure has collected over 3,690,000kg (3,690 tonnes) of rubbish from over 13,200 illegal dumping sites in the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands with the project processing over 14,500 reports. If you were to put all the rubbish that Pure has removed from the uplands into standard household rubbish bags, they would fill over 400,000 bags. If you lined up all these bags on the road, they would stretch all the way from Dublin to Dingle. Ian Davis, Pure Manager, commented, ‘Illegal

dumping is not unique to the Wicklow/Dublin uplands, however, while most regions in Ireland are currently reporting an increase in illegal dumping, the Pure Project is seeing a decrease. We’re the first project of its kind in Ireland and the success of Pure is based on a multistakeholder approach, with a strong emphasis on collaboration and cooperation between all of the organisations involved in the project. However, it is extremely important that we do not become complacent, because if we do, it won’t take long before illegal dumping will be on the increase.’ The environmental project has been recording and mapping every location and incident of illegal dumping in the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands since 2007 and have built up a base-linedata of all illegal dumping activity in this region, the location of dumping, type of dumping, landowner, and amount of dumping, and for a number of years now they have been recording an annual reduction. The data that Pure collect is valuable information providing indicators into the nature and extent of illegal dumping in Wicklow/Dublin Uplands, and statistical evidence for all illegal dumping incidents in this region. Pure utilises a multidisciplined approach in combating illegal dumping, incorporating

a number of educational initiatives, environment/ community projects – The Pure Mile, public awareness campaigns, regional/national media campaigns, enforcement and preventative measures, GPS/GIS data-base to record all illegal dumping sites, covert CCTV operations, and a dedicated vehicle – The Pure Truck, that removes all illegal dumping from the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands.

The Pure Project Partnership approach, incorporating statutory, non-statutory organisations, and members of the public, has proven extremely successful in combating illegal dumping in the Wicklow/ Dublin Uplands and over the past five years they have recorded an annual reduction in illegal dumping activity. This reduction in dumping coincides with the huge increase of Pure Mile groups and areas, with hundreds of miles of roads, mountains, woodlands, valleys, forestries, upland amenities, car parks, and beaches, currently being adopted. The Pure Mile Project is an environmental, community, heritage initiative, that encourages communities and groups living in rural areas of Wicklow, South Dublin, and Dun-Laoghaire, to adopt a mile of road, or miles of road, in their local area, or in the Wicklow/ Dublin Uplands and organise litter picks, clean-ups, anti-dumping campaigns,

research information about their local wildflowers, plants, trees, animals, and the built, cultural, and social heritage of an area. Thousands of Pure Mile volunteers, ranging from individuals, family groups, community groups, walking groups, cycling groups, running groups, scouts, beavers, businesses, and organisations, removed hundreds of tonnes of illegally dumped waste and thousands of bags of litter and rubbish from the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands. Pure provide all groups with Pure Mile signage, Pure Mile bags, gloves, litter pickers and Pure Mile high-vis vests, and they also remove all of the rubbish collected by the groups. In 2021, Pure Mile groups organised clean ups and litter picks of the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands, which resulted in a visible decrease of litter and rubbish in upland areas. These cleanup events carried out by Pure Mile Groups resulted in the removal of over 4,000 bags of litter and rubbish, and it further demonstrates the necessity and importance of The Pure Mile Project, and the need for continued collaboration and engagement to protect the Wicklow/Dublin upland environment. 2021 also saw a large increase of visitors to the

Wicklow/Dublin Uplands, with day-trippers attracted to remote, secluded, scenic, mountainous, and woodland areas. Unfortunately, abandoned campaign sites were prevalent and the material removed by Pure, included, hundreds of tents, sleeping bags, blankets, chairs, tables, food items, bottles, cans, and barbeques, all discarded on the landscape. In an attempt to tackle the issue of abandoned camping sites, Pure collaborated with a number of agencies with each stakeholder providing resources to alleviate the problem, including, Pure Mile Groups, Wicklow County Council, Coillte and An Garda Siochana, which resulted in a decrease of abandoned material left on the landscape in the Garden County. Another initiative attributed to the decline in illegal dumping is the success of the Pure Covert CCTV Operations, which involved the deployment and installation of a number of covert CCTV units at several problematic upland dumping sites which were continually affected by illegal dumping. A 2021 successful court conviction of an illegal dumper caught on covert CCTV in county Wicklow was a joint collaboration involving Pure, Wicklow County Council, Coillte, and the

Gardai, demonstrating the success of the multistakeholder approach in tackling illegal dumping in the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands. The individual was fined €4,000 and costs of €550 with a two-year driving disqualification. All of the local authorities involved in Pure are continually investigating illegal dumping incidents and the conviction sends out a clear message to all dumpers, illegal dumping will not be tolerated in the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands. Pure would also like to remind the public of the change to its lo-call number to report illegal dumping in Wicklow/Dublin Uplands and all reports can be made to 1800 365 123. Pure is the first project of its kind in Ireland incorporating statutory and non-statutory organisations and stakeholders, including, The Department of Environment, Climate, and Communications, Wicklow County Council, South Dublin County Council, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Coillte, National Parks & Wildlife Service, and the Wicklow Uplands Council. This unique partnership project was established to combat illegal dumping in the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands and was officially launched in September 2006.

Pure would also like to inform the public that the lo-call phone number for reporting illegal dumping in the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands has changed from 1850 365 121 to 1800 365 123.

YOUNG PEOPLE ACROSS EUROPE MEET TO EXPLORE ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS

Young people from across Europe have visited Dublin to take part in a week-long event focused on exploring new innovative youth-led solutions to environmental issues facing young people across the world and to enhance young people’s health and well-being through nature. ECOUNESCO, Ireland’s leading environmental education and youth organisation is leading a strategic partnership with five world class organisations to roll out a Youth Action for Nature and Well-Being programme that aims to relieve eco-anxiety and support young people to learn more about making a positive environmental impact and support the future of youth climate action. As part of the programme, young people from Latvia, Spain, Scotland, Slovakia and across Ireland have gathered in Dublin to take

part in a range of activities including reflection sessions, field trips and workshops to explore ecoanxieties, sustainability, environmental solutions, transformative learning, peer education and global perspectives.

Elaine Nevin, National Director of ECO-UNESCO said “In a recent survey that was conducted by ECO-UNESCO, 60% of young people aged 16 to 25 feel anxious about climate change. It’s a privilege to be leading the Youth Action for Nature and Well-being programme with our partners from across Europe, which focuses on developing a wider strategy to reduce these climate fears and promote transformative learning, action project work and nature-based strategies for positive mental health. ” “Hosting this week-long event as part of this European-Wide programme

has been a really beneficial tool for young people to take the time to reflect on nature and their own personal well-being while meeting like-minded individuals who share the same interests in tackling climate change. We hope that this programme will help these young people develop life-long skills in the context of climate action and environmental projects”

The Youth Action for Nature and Well-being programme is a partnership between ECO-UNESCO, Gaia Education, Youth 4 Smile, Resilience Earth, Ecowellness Consulting and OZ VIPA SK that is designed to to create new ways of working with young people that combine areas of transformative learning, action competence and Nature-based strategies for positive mental health. The programme will test

best practices in learning and creating environmental projects and produce toolkits, resources and trainings co-designed by young people. ECO-UNESCO

hopes that the tools and outputs developed from this programme will be implemented by educators, youth workers and by young people themselves across

Letter To the Editor Survivors of Intuitions on a Journey to healing and peace

Dear Editor

Many of us survivors are on a journey of healing and even if we can’t fully heal we try to get some peace in our brokenness, we know our truth we lived it and continue to live with it, Many live with a living bereavement, loss of childhood, loss of a child and more, many of us survived neglect, abuse, vaccine trials and the institutions, we were hurt and torn apart, many of us believed that firstly no one would listen to us and secondly that no one would believe us! We need to be able to tell our truth, tell our story and try to heal. Give us the space and time to talk our truth. Listen to us! I am a damaged and hurt person but my past does not define me, it has taken me a long time to love myself, I find it hard to trust people. But I want to heal, I want to have peace in my Heart and my head. I am not letting commission reports, bills, negativity and promises get into my head, it can’t take any more false promises, I have heard so many talk for survivors and debate for us, I don’t need any report to tell me what we lived. I have never been and never will be a victim, I am a survivor, we are here today because we are strong to have survived so much. We are lucky so many weren’t. I wish every Survivor that Every step on their journey be a step on the healing journey. Go raibh maith agat, Cllr Francis Timmons Clondalkin Area Chair 2021-2022 Independent Dublin Mid West

TRIBUTE PAID TO EUROPEAN GOLD MEDALISTS FROM LUCAN HARRIERS The Mayor of South Dublin County, Councillor Peter Kavanagh, held a reception at County Hall to celebrate the fantastic achievements of Carol Kearney, Annette Durkan and Leanne Wellings at the European Masters

Indoor Championships in the Portuguese city of Braga for the Lucan Harriers. The women brought home gold medals in the Women’s over 50 200m relay and set a number of national records in their respective

events including 200m and 100m relay, 400m outdoor and indoor events. The athletes were joined by family and friends at the celebration. The Mayor Councillor Peter Kavangh opened the event with

STOP THE CLOSURE OF THE CLONDALKIN EQUINE CLUB TD for Dublin Mid-West Mark Ward has described the news that the Clondalkin Equine Club is in imminent danger of closing as a body blow to the community. The Clondalkin Equine Club was set up in 2017 to promote good animal welfare practice and engaging with marginalised young people in Dublin 22. Teachta Ward said: “It is very disheartening to hear that the Clondalkin Equine Club is in danger of

closing. “This is the only purpose-built club of its kind nationally and it is now facing an uncertain future “The club is like an oasis of tranquillity and community engagement in Clondalkin “I have been raising this issue directly with South Dublin County Council and with the Minister for Agriculture for some time now. The Clondalkin Equine Club is in danger of closing in the next three months

if a funding stream is not identified. “The Equine Club offers a livery service to horses owned by children in the Clondalkin and Lucan South area, continuing the tradition of urban horse ownership in the locality. “I am appealing to the Government in partnership with South Dublin County Council to provide core funding “The club is also appealing to the private sector to assist with funding to save this unique service and to increase the capacity of the board of management. “The Equine Club provides a service that could be core funded through many Government departments, like Agriculture, Community Development , Education, Justice, Children, Sport, and local Government. “It is probably a victim of its own success and is falling between the stools of different departments. We need to see a cross departmental approach to assist this club to remain open. “The Equine Club is much more than just a place to keep your horse. It was opened in 2017 and provides a supportive and holistic environment for children and their families to give them a sense of belonging within their community. “It also stables 20 horses in a disadvantaged area.

words of congratulations and admiration followed by PJ Hyland, Chairman of the Lucan Harriers and their coach Gerry Martin who both congratulated the athletes and encouraged everyone, of all abilities, to get involved in the

club. The Mayor said “I’d like to congratulate Carol, Annette and Leanne on their amazing achievements in the European Masters indoor championships, Sport is an essential part of life and has a positive effect on our mental and physical

wellbeing, it teaches us teamwork and connects us to our communities. The Lucan Harriers are indeed very fortunate to have such dedicated and talented athletes who will be an inspiration to new athletes of all ages.”

DS 3 E-TENSE – UNCOMPROMISED ELECTRIC SUV

By Breda Corrigan The DS 3 is a small premium SUV that is aimed squarely at the Audi Q2 and BMW X1, along with higherend versions of the Mazda CX-30, Toyota C-HR and Ford Puma. The DS brand is the luxury arm of iconic French brand Citroën, (now part of the Stellantis Group which includes Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Fiat, Opel, Alfa Romeo and JEEP). The DS 3 name was used before on a stylish 3-door hatchback that was marketed across Europe as a Citroën DS 3, but in 2016 the Citroën part of the name was discarded, and DS then became a standalone brand in its own right.

battery placement taking up vital boot space. The DS 3 E-TENSE has the same 350-litre boot capacity as its Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) siblings, as well as identical interior space and ergonomics. As with the DS 3 Crossback ICE line-up, there are three trim levels to choose from in the DS 3 E-TENSE range; Elegance, Performance Line and Prestige, but only one electric motor and battery combination. The standard 100kW (136bhp) electric motor is powered by a 50kWh Lithium-ion battery, resulting in a claimed WLTP driving range of up to 319kms.

driving information displayed on the 7-inch digital display. Beneath the touchscreen, the central fascia is spectacularly stylish with the touch controls and two central air vents designed in the shape of diamonds. Overall comfort inside the DS 3 is exceptional. For the front and rear seats, DS engineers have incorporated double density foam using an innovative treatment to give a base that is enveloping and of high quality. Additionally, the use of superior insulation in critical areas around the DS 3 Crossback ensures that road noise is kept to an absolute minimum.

Three Trim Options.

Futuristic and Upmarket.

Ultimate Personalisation.

The new DS 3 Crossback is only available as a five door hatchback, and is based on the Common Modular Platform (CMP), which underpins the latest Peugeot 208/2008, Opel Corsa/Mokka and Citroën C4.

The DS 3 Crossback’s cabin is eye-catching in every respect, and its futuristic and upmarket design certainly makes the BMW X1 look plain by comparison. The DS 3 Crossback features a fully digital cockpit that was created to make important driving information instantly available, with controls that are placed directly at the driver’s fingertips. Advanced technology, and a high driving position, allow drivers to concentrate on the road ahead and access controls via the wide 10.3-inch HD touchscreen, with

The DS 3 Crossback looks distinctive from every angle, with E-TENSE badging being the only unique feature to identify the all-electric powertrain that lies beneath the stylish bodywork. Thanks to a bold front end with a large grille taking centre stage, a distinctive kick in the window line on the car’s profile, and large badging to the rear, the new DS 3 strikes quite a pose on the road.

This means that the DS 3 Crossback was designed from the ground up to accommodate both petrol and diesel powertrains, as well as allelectric power, thereby ensuring that the layout and practicality of the new DS 3 E-TENSE isn’t compromised with issues such as

The Crossback’s flush door handles pop out when you unlock the car, providing terrific visual drama in

the process. There are plenty of personalisation options, with nine exterior colours, three contrasting roof colours and multiple alloy wheel design/colour combinations available throughout the range. Rapid Charge Option. Charging the DS 3 Crossback E-TENSE from 0-100% via a 7.4kW wallbox charger will take 7 hours and 45 minutes, with a 10-80% charge time of just 30 minutes from a 100kW public rapid-charge point. The DS 3 E-TENSE comes with a three-pin plug cable and a cable for public charge points too, while an App that allows you to monitor charging, as well as set the interior temperature ahead of time, can be downloaded on to a Smartphone for added convenience. Test Car. My test car was a DS 3 E-TENSE Elegance which was finished in Artense Grey metallic paintwork. Key standard features include 17” ‘MADRID’ diamond-cut alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, cruise control, alarm, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless start and a host of safety features. On

the road is where the all-electric powertrain proves itself to be inspirational. Thanks to the instant rush of torque, the immediate surge associated with so many electric cars is ever present. The car builds power fast enough to keep up with fast moving traffic on a motorway, while the car’s soft throttle response makes it very relaxing to drive. Even at motorway speeds, refinement is particularly impressive, with very little in the way of electric motor whine, wind and road noise. Around town, light and accurate steering makes the car easy to position and manoeuvre. Verdict, Cost & Warranty. The new DS 3 Crossback E-TENSE is an impressive electric SUV that has refinement, luxurious comfort and unique styling on its side. With a starting price of €38,949 (on the road and inclusive of an SEAI Grant and VRT relief) it is quite a lot more expensive that its petrol and diesel siblings, but immediate savings can be made due to ultra-low running costs, reduced maintenance and annual road tax of just €120. A comprehensive 5-year/100,000km warranty is standard across the entire DS model range.

AN COSÁN LAUNCHED NATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO HELP COMMUNITIES GET DIGITAL

An Cosán recently called for communities across Ireland to join Get Yourself Online Week, Ireland’s first community-based digital inclusion week, which aims to boost adults’ digital skills and confidence. Get Yourself Online Week (GYOW), which is organised by Ireland’s largest community education provider ran from 25-29 April 2022. As part of the week’s activities, An Cosán offered members of the public the opportunity to avail of free digital assessment, advice and support at its community education centre in Tallaght. An Cosán’s network of 226 community partners also offered similar opportunities for digital upskilling at their centres across the country, enabling adult learners to find out where and how they can start to learn the essential skills needed for today’s digital world.

Currently almost one in two adults in Ireland lack basic digital skills, according to the Government’s Adult Literacy For Life Strategy launched last September.

It is hoped that enabling adult learners currently lacking basic digital skills to get online confidently and safely will help Ireland reach the European Union target of 80% of adults with digital skills by 2030. Speaking ahead of GYOW, An Cosán Chief Executive Officer Heydi Foster said, “Getting online confidently, safely and affordably has never been more important. An Cosán has seen first-hand how the pandemic highlighted digital literacy. It is now essential for everyone to be able to access essential services online, learn and work from home, keep up with the latest reputable news, and connect digitally with friends and

family.” Ms Foster said she would like to commend An Cosán’s community partners for engaging in this important social and economic endeavour. “A

particular shout out to our newly-appointed Digital Champions across the country who will play an important role in our Get Yourself Online campaign,”

she said. “I want to thank our community partners for making this possible and to our sponsors, Accenture and SOLAS, for their ongoing commitment and support in

tackling digital exclusion in Ireland”. To find out more about Get Yourself Online Week, see www.ancosan.ie/ getyourselfonline.

SOUTH DUBLIN LGBT+ COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO SLIGO ATTACKS

Horrific Homophobic attacks condemned by South Dublin Mayor and the County’s LGBT+ Network. Dublin’s LGBT+ community is shocked and deeply upset by the horrific events in Sligo recently as well as by the brutal homophobic attack on a gay man in Dublin.

centre street which hosts a rainbow crossing – to mark the diversity of our capital city - it says more again. It says people feel they can do such acts of barbarity and get away with it”.

These violent acts have no place in a modern Ireland. The Network has made a statement saying, “ When a man is attacked and severely injured as he leaves a club, simply on the basis that he is gay, it is an attack upon the equality we hold dearly and the safety we should all be able to enjoy.

The Network said that, “We stand in support of those affected by the killings and attacks of this week. We offer their families our condolences. We vow to keep up our efforts to highlight the need for diversity and acceptance. Popular support for diversity in Ireland is undoubted, but a small minority support for words and acts of aggression has led people to feel they have permission to act on their phobias and hate.

That it happened on a city

It is time for leadership in

calling out such hate – well before it gets to the point of violence.”

Chairperson of the Network, Gerry Curran said, “We have become used to living open and free lives as gay people in Ireland: We refuse to do otherwise, and will face down the purveyors of hate who stoke up lies and fear, from the shadows of social media and group think. We will maintain our right to add greatly to the society we live in. There will be no retreating to the past. No fear or attempts at shaming will make us leave the public sphere we enjoy so much, and contribute so much to as equal citizens. The network advised all members and gay people

TACKLE LITTER THROUGH STICKER CAMPAIGN

Pic: Ben Ryan The Mayor of South Dublin County, Councillor Peter Kavanagh, has launched a new anti-dumping bin sticker campaign at an event in Corkagh Park. The sticker was designed by Comhairle Na nÓg and Foróige in conjunction with the Environmental Awareness section of South Dublin County Council and highlights the importance of not leaving your rubbish on or around bins when they are full. South Dublin County Council has some of the most beautiful parks in Ireland with five parks having received Green Flag Awards from An Taisce in 2021. Rubbish placed at bins is a major issue in all parks and on the streets of South Dublin County and throughout Ireland. While the Council’s park rangers and public realm crews are constantly working to keep on top of collections, the Council’s new sticker campaign will ask the public who use South Dublin County parks to not leave

rubbish in or around the bin if they find that the bin is full. The Council is asking that people locate another bin or bring the rubbish home. Speaking at the launch, Mayor Peter Kavanagh said “I am delighted to launch this initiative to encourage people to keep our parks unspoilt and tidy. We all got to know our local parks a bit better during lockdown, and these stickers remind us that we can’t just leave rubbish. If a bin is full, find another, or take your rubbish home with you.” Fionnghuala Ryan, Climate Change and Environmental Awareness Officer at South Dublin County Council, added, “Rubbish left at or on the bins gets blown around the parks and bags ripped apart by wildlife and dogs. Let us help keep our parks clean, so we can all enjoy their beauty.”

everywhere to be careful. The statement said,” the need for security extends to our online presence, and the use of dating sites needs to be accompanied by common sense. Don’t meet people with no face-pics on their profile, or who don’t send them in messages. It’s even better that they offer you a link to other social media they are on – so as you can see they are who they say. Take screen grabs of the details of who you are meeting - Share with a mate – or e-mail them to yourself. Meet in a public venue. We join with all decent and reasonable people in condemning violence, especially violence based on unfounded hatred. We join with the Mayor of the County in supporting our neighbours in Dublin South who might be afraid as a result of the past week. Know you are not alone”. The Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr Peter Kavanagh said ‘My heart is saddened by the tragic and terrible deaths of Aidan Moffitt and

Michael Snee, who were brutally murdered in Sligo. Just as the country rallied together in a shared sense of anger and frustration at the murder of Ashling Murphy, so must we now come together and express our support and solidarity to the LGBTQIA+ community, and condemn all acts of homophobic and transphobic violence. Everyone deserves the chance to live their lives and be themselves, and we have a moral obligation to stand up for anyone suffering from bigotry and discrimination, before we see another horrific hate crime in Ireland.’ South Dublin LGBT+Network member Cllr Alan Edge said, ‘The tragedy in Sligo reinforces the urgent need for the progression of hate

crimes legislation through the Oireachtas. We need to stand together with other minority groups and send a clear message that hate in any form directed at people because of who they are or what they believe will not be tolerated.’ “To anyone locally feeling they need some emotional support, the National LGBT+ helpline is open 7 days a week on 1800 929 539. I would urge anyone who has witnessed or been the victim of a hate crime on the basis of their sexuality or gender identity or expression to report it to gardaí immediately. Details of the Garda gate crime portal as well as the list of diversity officers countrywide are available at lgbt.ie”
