TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe has said that new figures expose an alarming number of patients are waiting more than 24 hours for care at Tallaght’s Emergency Department. The figures suggest that hospital overcrowding is on track to return to pre-pandemic levels with more than 1,650 people having had a wait longer than 24 hours in Tallaght Hospital alone this year. Teachta Crowe said that much more must

be done to ensure that patients receive high quality and timely care without these appalling delays. Teachta Crowe said: “More than 1,650 people have been left waiting for more than 24 hours to be seen at Tallaght’s Emergency Department so far this year. Behind every number is a patient who needed timely care and was left to wait for far too long. “I was contacted recently by a family member of a cancer patient in their 80s who had been stuck on a

trolley for over 36 hours at that point. How can any Government stand over a health service where this is not even shocking anymore? “The pain and distress caused by these delays is considerable. People attend emergency departments because they require urgent care. This scandal is happening because of process and leadership failures across the health service. “Let me be clear, the staff at the hospital are doing an incredible job, working under

pressure to do their very best to serve our community, but they are being let down by a lack of funding, planning and leadership by the government. “ E m e r g e n c y D e p a r t m e n t overcrowding is set to be as severe this year as it ever was before the pandemic. “These long delays also impact the ambulance service with vitally needed ambulances left sitting outside the hospital as they cannot deliver patients into care.

“I have written to the management of Tallaght Hospital recently asking that reforms be put in place, such as greater interlink with a patient’s GP and the overturning of the prohibition of carers accompanying patients, particularly the elderly and vulnerable. “The Minister must lead from the front. Staff at Tallaght Hospital are working day and night to look after our community, but they aren’t getting the support they need from government. Patients deserve better and I will continue to raise this with the government until the changes needed are delivered.”

TALLAGHT LEARNER RECEIVES STANDING OVATION AFTER INTERVIEW

Two adult learners, one from Tallaght and one living in Tralee, have shared how their experience of adult education with An Cosán has transformed their lives and given them a more secure and sustainable future.

Paula Ryan from Tallaght and Rudo Chitseko, who is originally from Zimbabwe but has been living in Kerry since 2015, were speaking at an annual fundraiser lunch in The Shelbourne on Friday 1st April organised by Ireland’s largest provider of community education. They received a standing ovation after sharing their stories. Miriam O’Callaghan, who volunteered her time as MC for the event, interviewed the two graduates about their experience of community education and the impact it has had on their lives. Paula Ryan, an early school leaver from Tallaght, told her story of how adult education with An Cosán had impacted every aspect

of her life in a positive way. Paula, who is on her sixth course with An Cosán and hopes to undertake a BA in Leadership and Community Development, said: “An Cosán has empowered me and inspired me, it’s taught me how to be a better person. I have more patience and empathy now. It’s made our home a happier home and I am more involved in the community now.” Paula, who has completed courses in computing, business administration and Special Needs Assisting with An Cosán, told guests she would not have been able to pursue education if it had not been for the additional supports offered by An Cosán. “I couldn’t believe everything I was offered,” she said. “I availed of everything – the financial supports, the free Early Years’ education and care for children, the one-to-one tutoring and mentoring, the laptop loan scheme, the

Rudo described how she started a BA in Applied Addiction Studies and Community Development with An Cosán while living in direct provision in Killarney. She graduated in January during the Institute of Technology Carlow’s Lifelong Learning Conferring Ceremony (IT Carlow is the accreditation body for An Cosán’s degree programmes) and plans to become a social care worker. Rudo said she wanted to support others the way she was supported. “I want to give back to the community,” she said. “I don’t want to be just living; I want to make a difference. OFFICIAL OPENING GRANGE CASTLE WEST ACCESS ROAD The Mayor of South Dublin County, Councillor Peter Kavanagh, officially opened the Grange Castle West Access Road on April 5th.

The Grange Castle West Access Road is the first phase of infrastructure delivered that will provide

access to approximately 500 acres of development land in Grange Castle West. Grange Castle Business Park has a proven track record as a business location of choice that positions South Dublin County Council to attract inward investment and proactively support

job creation and economic development.

Grange Castle Business Park is home to 6,500 jobs, including 2,500 jobs in the construction sector, with plenty of high-profile international clients such as Google, Amazon, Cyrus

1, Microsoft, Grifols, Pfizer, Aryzta and Takeda. The Grange Castle West Access Road commenced in July 2017 with the appointment of Consulting Engineers, Clifton Scannell Emerson Associates (CSEA) to provide Technical Consultancy Services for the planning process.

In March 2020, following a detailed tender process, Clonmel Enterprises Limited was appointed to construct Phase 1 of the road. Grange Castle West Access Road contains over 1km of dual carriageway and comprises one double lane and three single lanes with fully segregated roundabouts with pedestrian and cyclist crossing facilities provided. The access road includes a full services corridor with gas, water, electricity and fibre broadband to allow South Dublin County Council to offer fully serviced sites to prospective clients.

Jason Frehill, Director of Economic, Enterprise and Tourism Development in South Dublin County Council, said, “The road opening represents a landmark day for the next chapter of Grange Castle Business Park. The €13m investment in the access road enables the opening up of 500 acres of strategically

important land, with the potential to provide a significant jobs boost for the County. This project, and what this area can achieve in terms of employment and job creation will have a major impact on the future economy of South Dublin County, the Dublin region and the Irish economy itself.”

PROCEEDS OF CRIME FUND TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY PROJECTS OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS Clondalkin Councillor Kenneth Egan has welcomed the opening of applications for grant aid under the brand new proceeds of crime fund which he campaigned to establish. Local community groups are being invited to apply for grants of up to €150,000 from the €2million fund, with applications open from now until 8thJune. “I came up with the idea of using some of the proceeds of crime, seized by CAB, to benefit local community projects and was thrilled when Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee told me this was something she would do. The fund has now been established and local groups, including projects in Clondalkin, can now apply for grant funding for ideas they have about how to improve community safety. The Community Safety Innovation Fund will give two million euro

back to communities that have been impacted negatively by crime and I think that’s something really positive because I want to see areas like ours being made stronger, safer communities,” explained Fine Gael’s Cllr. Kenneth Egan. The Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee TD, officially opened applications for the new fund, confirming that it will use money seized from the proceeds of crime to support investment in community safety projects. She said it will see the proceeds of crime reinvested in local projects to improve community safety, saying that it was reflective of the success of An Garda Síochána and the Criminal Assets Bureau in seizing proceeds from criminal activity. “This is the first call for funding applications and I expect the budget will grow next year again,”

continued Cllr. Kenneth Egan. “Projects that tackle or reduce the fear of crime, support the creation of safe and resilient communities, reduce reoffending or divert vulnerable individuals away from engagement in criminal behaviour will all be eligible to apply

and I know we have some amazing local initiatives that will qualify. I’d really encourage local groups to apply because €150,000 could go a long way in Clondalkin.”

HSE OFFERS FREE ONLINE MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT PROGRAMME A recently introduced online programme will make mental health supports more accessible for people suffering with depression and anxiety in the community, Dublin MidWest’s TD has said.

Deputy Emer Higgin’s has welcomed the online programme created by SilverCloud together with the HSE, which will offer free online support courses to those referred by a GP, a primary care psychologists, the national counselling service or Jigsaw mental health charity. “Getting support is the first step in learning how to manage mental health challenges but one-to-one or face-to-face services are not always accessible for people and finding the time and money can be a real barrier,” said Deputy Higgins. “So I think this new programme, being offered free-of-charge by SilverCloud and the HSE, is so innovative because it allows professionals to provide their patients

with access to an 8-week supported programme for mental health within 24hrs of referral. “The online courses remove the financial barrier and allow individuals to take things at their own pace while being guided by an assigned clinical supporter to keep them on track,” said Deputy Higgins. “Online supports like this are clinically proven with SilverCloud reporting that up to 80% of users show improvement in depression and anxiety symptoms so I would really encourage anyone who thinks these courses would be for them to seek a referral from their GP or other mental health care provider. Clondalkin Cllr. Kenneth Egan is a qualified psychotherapist and has seen first-hand the role that online resources and counselling can play in supporting people’s mental health management in the community. Cllr. Egan said, “I know it can be difficult to take that first step and

look for help when you’re struggling with your mental health, but I think online resources like this can be really beneficial and help

people begin to work on their anxiety or depression at their own pace. “This

approach

wouldn’t

be appropriate for anyone with severe mental health symptoms such as psychosis, or thoughts of suicide but it can be very helpful for

people with moderate to mild symptoms and I think it’s great that it is being offered free of charge,” concluded Cllr. Egan.

NO URGENCY TO TACKLE EATING DISORDERS Mark Ward TD has said that adult patients simply cannot wait any longer for the Government to increase the amount of inpatient

eating disorder beds that are available to the public. Currently, there are just three inpatient public beds available in Ireland, in St

Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin. However, they are only available to people in the catchment area of Dublin South East, Dublin South

INFORMATION CAMPAIGN NEEDED ON CRYPTOCURRENCY AND RELATED SCAMS An information campaign is needed to highlight the risks associated with cryptocurrency and the prevalence of investment fraud, according to TD and Spokesperson on Social Media and Finance Technology, Emer Higgins. Deputy Higgins said, “Almost one in five people in this country own cryptocurrency and interest in crypto assets is on the rise, especially among young people. Unfortunately, so too is investment fraud. “An Garda Síochána report that investment fraud increased by 67 per cent last year. 234 such crimes were reported at a loss of €12.4 million.

are high risk anyway. If something goes wrong the consumer has no protections to fall back on and cannot access support from the Financial Services Ombudsman.

“Personally, I’m noticing an increase in cryptocurrency scams being advertised on social media so I think it’s really important that people know how to spot these scams and how to invest safely with a legitimate entity. “Even aside from the risk of fraud, people should bear in mind that virtual currencies are unregulated and as such

“The expert advice is to do your homework before making any investments and always look for professional, financial and legal advice. “Use regulated companies, be vigilant for social media scams and stick to the motto that if it seems too good to be true, it most likely is”, Deputy Higgins concluded.

“Last month, the Central Bank issued a warning on the potential risks of investing in crypto assets, but I believe we urgently need a public information campaign to raise awareness of the risks associated with investing in an unregulated industry such as this and to highlight the prevalence of scams. “I raised the matter with the Taoiseach recently in the Dáil and I also plan to raise it with the Central Bank.

and Co Wicklow.

Teachta Ward said; “Eating disorders are the most fatal of all mental health conditions. “There is a lack of inpatient beds for adults needing treatment for eating disorders. “Currently, there are just three inpatient public beds available in Ireland, in St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin. However, they are only available to people in the catchment area of Dublin South East, Dublin South and Co Wicklow.

2021 and it has been put on hold until late 2022 at the earliest.

“At present adults who have an eating disorder diagnosis and require inpatient care can be referred to any of the HSE’s acute inpatient mental health-approved centres. “They do not receive the specialist multidisciplinary help they need in these facilities. “In a response I got from the HSE it said that only a small number of people benefit from inpatient care.

“We also seen reports that the private National Eating Disorder Recovery Centre has a current waiting list of 50 patients. “The HSE have plans to increase adult inpatient capacity to 23 beds across the state but there is no urgency. “We need to see these beds opened as a priority .

LOCAL SWIMMING POOLS RECEIVE FUNDING

“This is completely unacceptable. “Despite Minister Butler saying that eating disorders are her priority we have seen no increase in inpatient eating disorder beds under her watch “The Adult Eating Disorder team in CHO 6 is currently based at St Vincent’s University Hospital. “The community base will be within the Mount Carmel Community Hospital campus and will deliver outpatient and day patient services. Mount Carmel has been delayed. It was meant to open late

Local Tallaght representative Cllr Charlie O’Connor has welcomed the swimming pool funding for local Tallaght Pools recently announced by Sport Ireland and Ireland Active. The Grants were awarded to Tallaght Leisure Centre (Grant amount of €16,926), Tallaght Sports Complex (Grant amount of €11,284), Westpark Fitness (Grant amount of €12,459) and Club Vitae (Grant amount of €9873). NEW EDUCATIONAL LAB IN TALLAGHT UNVEILED South Dublin County Council through South Dublin Libraries, is excited to announce the launch of the AWS Think Big Space in Tallaght, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The AWS Think Big Space is a new educational lab located beside the Tallaght Luas stop, which aims to inspire an interest in science, technology, engineering, arts and maths. It provides a dedicated space for students, educators and communities to explore innovative and imaginative ideas through interactive hands-on technical education. AWS has opened AWS Think Big Spaces across the world, however, this

is the first AWS Think Big Space to launch in Europe.

South Dublin Libraries and AWS will host an innovative programme of events in the AWS Think Big Space starting in April. Events will take place every month and feature Creative Hut Robotics workshops and virtual reality (VR) workshops. The VR workshops will introduce students to the technology behind VR as well providing a hands-on experience and the chance to see VR in action. In the Creative Hut robotics workshops, students will have the opportunity to collaborate and create amazing robots, take on challenges and get an

introduction to robotics technology. Students and teachers will be encouraged to “Think Big” by using their creativity and imagination as they explore the technologies on offer. The programme will support interactive handson learning and will be available for 4th class to 6th class primary school groups, and 1st year to 4th year secondary school groups. Speaking on the launch, Paul Fusco, County Librarian with SDCC, said, “We are delighted to announce the launch of the AWS Think Big Space, and this exciting collaboration with AWS. Libraries have always moved with the times and this is a perfect example.

Representatives from South Dublin County Council, Amazon Web Services and County Library, Tallaght. The pace of technological advancement is everincreasing, and by working with experts in the field like AWS, South Dublin Libraries can help the children of today become the creative thinkers for tomorrow.” Mike Beary, Country Manager, AWS Ireland, added: “AWS has been investing in South Dublin for over a decade. DUBLIN COMMUNITY CHALLENGE SUPPORTED BY MICROSOFT ChangeX, supported by Community Empowerment Fund award from Microsoft, has announced €90,000 funding to support local community groups, schools, and organisations that want to create thriving communities across Dublin. The €90,000 is split across two funds, with €55,000 available for the 2022 Dublin Community Challenge and €35,000 provided for a new Trees for Schools Challenge. This marks the second Dublin Community Challenge supported by Microsoft, and builds on the €50,000 of funding provided last year. The 2021 Challenge supported 27 local groups to start community sustainability projects, impacting more than 6,450 local people. The Trees for Schools Challenge is a new initiative for 2022, and will support up to 10 schools to plant Pocket Forests. ChangeX, supported by Microsoft, has funded more than 300 teams in communities across Europe and the US to start impactful community projects through a series of Community Challenges. The 2022 Dublin Community Challenge will support up to 22 teams to start new community

sustainability projects. Groups can choose from a carefully-curated portfolio of 13 proven ideas. This includes some favourites from the 2021 Challenge, such as GIY, an initiative that encourages people to grow their own food. Also this year sees new ideas, like PlantPure Communities Pod, which supports plant-based nutrition, added to the portfolio. Local groups who apply for funding to start one of the projects on offer will have 30 days to build a small team and design an action plan. On completing these steps, they will be eligible for seed funding of up to €5,000. Microsoft aims to establish a positive presence in the communities where it operates datacenters, by contributing to long-term social, economic, and environmental health in those areas. The Microsoft Community Empowerment Fund, which provides funding for both Challenges, is an initiative of the Microsoft Datacenter Community Development team. Microsoft’s collaboration with ChangeX empowers local communities to address social and environmental issues in an innovative way.

“It’s really exciting to be announcing two funds this year and building on the success of last year’s Dublin Community Challenge,” said Gary McLoughlin, Datacenter Community Development, Program Manager EMEA at Microsoft. “Already thousands of people across Dublin have benefitted from the 27 impactful projects started last year. I can’t wait to see a new group of people empowered to drive positive community change through the 2022 Challenge. Also,

NATIONAL SPRING CLEAN 2022 LAUNCHED IN SOUTH DUBLIN The Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr Peter Kavanagh, in the company of Clondalkin Tidy Towns launched National Spring Clean on Friday 1 April.

National Spring Clean traditionally takes place in the month of April and over the last 23 years, the campaign has been delivered by South Dublin County Council, with An Taisce and an army of volunteers who have played a vital role in creating a cleaner environment and improving the quality of life for people in our area. The campaign has enjoyed immense success during this period. The key to solving our litter problem is to continue to foster a public attitude that takes pride in a clean environment and looks upon littering as unacceptable behavior. In 2021 94 groups signed up for National Spring Clean and we are hoping for a similar turnout in 2022. At the launch Mayor Cllr Peter Kavanagh commented: “National Spring Clean is about communities coming

together to tackle litter and encourages individuals and groups to get involved in local clean-up events.

The National Spring Clean is also an opportunity for volunteers to take local actions to make a change at a global scale. As a matter of fact, over the last couple of years, the National Spring Clean has also been trying to raise awareness about another crucial issue: the link between litter and climate change – the biggest challenge of our time – and highlight how combined local actions can have a global effect. Our consumption patterns and how we dispose and treat our waste has a substantial impact on the levels of emissions of several greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change. South Dublin County Council is asking for the people in their area, across all sectors and walks of life, to get involved and sign up. The campaign provides people an opportunity to support a proactive initiative, help improve the environment,

and importantly, be a positive influence for the next generation. All clean

up groups registering with the National Spring Clean campaign receive a FREE

clean-up kit comprising information, refuse sacks, protective gloves to keep

participants clean! Groups can register at www. nationalspringclean.org

MAKEOVER COMPLETED BY DFS AND CROWN PAINTS FOR THE LAURALYNN HOSPICE As part of its ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility campaign in Ireland, bringing comfort to those who need it most, sofa retailer DFS helped deliver a wonderful makeover at LauraLynn,Ireland’s Children’s Hospice, working with Crown Paint and interior designer, Alannah Monks. LauraLynn’s Children’s Hospice works with children with life-limiting illnesses and their families, to make the most of the little moments together.

Commenting on the project, Bevan Ritchie, Head of Operations at LauraLynn Children’s Hospice, said; ‘’We would like to thank DFS, Crown Paints and Alannah Monks of The Abode Stylist for so generously helping us to makeover our main reception area at our campus in Leopardstown. LauraLynn is a bright and colourful place and it’s even more so now thanks to this beautiful makeover. Our main reception area is normally the first space that visitors see when they arrive at LauraLynn and we are so delighted that it is now a brighter and more welcoming space which reflects the joy and fun that LauraLynn is all about.’’ The project is part of a series of ongoing makeovers throughout Ireland completed by DFS over the past few years. Dan Geraghty, Store Manager for DFS Carrickmines said, “Speaking on behalf of all my colleagues we are honoured to have been able to support this very special service. DFS has supplied sofas to thousands of homes throughout Ireland and we truly understand the benefits and the importance of comfort in every environment, so giving back in this way has been a real privilege. Anyone who walks through the doors of LauraLynn’s main reception can see immediately what a special place it is. Thank you to the amazing team on the ground who have made this happen, Crown Paints, Alannah Monks of the Abode Stylist, and print company, Jando, for supporting the makeover.” Alannah Monks, said, “As a mum myself, I feel huge empathy with the families who find themselves here and was delighted to volunteer my time. As a designer I am so conscious of how a

space can make people feel. We wanted to achieve something that reflected the positive work done by LauraLynn and the joy they bring to the lives of so many during difficult times. We chose to lead with colour and pattern, creating somewhere child friendly without losing sight of the serious work being done by the amazing team behind LauraLynn. The colours available from DFS made bringing the space together so simple. The French Connection Zinc sofa in navy made continuity with the site’s branding extremely easy, and its leather upholstery will make the space easy to maintain and keep clean. The armchairs in yellow provided yet another pop of colour in a functional way, with the retro shape of the So Simple Tom armchair complementing the painted walls. Thanks also to Cathy McGovern and Bronagh Fleming for their support with murals. . Bringing the LauraLynn brand colours into the space was extremely important, and Crown Paints did an incredible job matching them using their colour matching services and making them available in their Crown Trade Clean Extreme Anti-Bacterial Scrubbable Matt Paint. Similarly the prints donated by Julie and Owen of Jando reflect the key colours of LauraLynn, of blue, pink and yellow, while also nodding to the charity’s value as an important place for families who need it in Ireland. We all want to support families who are on this very tough journey. In working with DFS and Crown Paints to transform the reception area my intention has been to give families some space to make the most of the little moments together.” Darren Mcllroy, Colour mixing Systems Manager for Crown Paint said “ When Alannah asked if we could help with this project it was an instant yes from everyone in Crown Paints team. We are privileged to have been able to support LauraLynn and their amazing work, even in this small way. The effect of colour on mood cannot be underrated and Alannah has created a fabulous welcoming, yet empathetic and practical space.”

RECOGNITION FOR ROWLAGH AS A VILLAGE IS VERY WELCOME Dublin Mid-West Sinn Féin welcome the news that Rowlagh Village has been included in South Dublin County Council’s development plan. Mark Ward TD and Cllr Derren O Brádaigh have been working on getting recognition for Rowlagh as a Village for some time. This recognition could lead to more investment and funding for the area. Teachta Ward said, “I have been working on getting recognition for Rowlagh as a Village for some time. I was turned down in 2016 in the last county development plan, but I’m delighted that the Rowlagh will get Village status after an amendment to the County Development plan by Sinn Féin’s Cllr O Brádaigh “The area of North Clondalkin is over 40 years old. It has been an area of historical levels of

disadvantage. Despite this the area has flourished over the years. “This is down to the resilience of the community who have had to fight tooth and nail over the years for some of the most basic needs, such as schools, community services and transport. “The area that runs from Rowlagh Community Centre to the new North Clondalkin Library is a hive of activity. “This area has all the infrastructure that you would see in any village centre. “I’m going to bring you on a virtual walk through Rowlagh Village. “Starting at the Dóchas Family Centre which is a project committed to supporting children who may have social, emotional, or behavioural needs. “Then you have

Rowlagh Community Centre which was built through fundraising in the community. “Then you have Aras Rualch which hosts CEEDS, the Clondalkin Centre for unemployed, Rowlagh Women’s Group and a Creche. It is also where my constituency office is. “There is also a number of very vibrant shops and other retail outlets including a pub which create a lot of local employment. “There is a health centre which is outdated but there is a campaign to get modern day fit for purpose Primary Health Centre “We then move onto the very modern building that is the Rowlagh credit union. “The latest jewel in the crown of Rowlagh is the beautiful North Clondalkin Library . QUINTAIN RECEIVES PLANNING PERMISSION FOR 227 NEW HOMES IN ADAMSTOWN

Quintain has received planning permission for 227 new homes in the next phase of its Aderrig development in Adamstown. The 12-acre site will include 95 threebed houses, 28 four-bed houses, and 104 two and three bed duplexes set among extensive landscaped communal areas, and a central pocket park. The site has a gross development value of over €90m and Quintain will appoint a contractor to start construction shortly. The first sales launch is planned for May. Aderrig benefits from its location in the centre of Adamstown with a host of amenities close by, including Airlie Park (due to open later this year), The Crossings village centre, 2 primary schools and 1 secondary school, and excellent bus and rail links. There are also 2 additional schools planned for the area in the future. Designed by BKD Architects, the scheme will provide a mix of well-proportioned

homes in a fast-growing suburban setting. This development marks further progress in Quintain’s plans for a vibrant community in Adamstown, where to date Quintain and its affiliates have built 1,000 homes, with over 85% occupied by first time buyers. In total Quintain has 1,500 homes under construction or due to commence this year in Adamstown. Michael Hynes, Joint Managing Partner of Quintain Ireland, said: “Quintain is delighted to receive planning permission on this phase of our Aderrig development delivering much needed new homes to create a vibrant and connected community. We now have over 1,500 homes under construction or due to commence in Adamstown this year with a strong focus on the first time buyer market. With excellent amenities and extensive green spaces, we expect strong interest in Aderrig when we launch sales in May.”

“This area has all the infrastructure that you would see in any village centre. I am delighted that Rowlagh Village has been included in the County Development plan as it was

refused in in 2016. “Rowlagh is now recognised on the same level as other village in our constituency such as Newcastle, Rathcoole, Saggart, Palmerstown and Lucan “This recognition

could lead to more investment and funding for the area but more importantly I’m delighted for the people of North Clondalkin who will see their village recognised.”

MOTORING LIFE

WITH

New Peugeot 208 Brings On The Style

By Breda Corrigan Peugeot has always honoured a highquality and inventive French manufacturing tradition. Today, more than ever, Peugeot is harnessing all of its energy to design elegant vehicles that deliver a sensory experience, and take driving to a whole new level. From ergonomics and materials to connectivity, Peugeot has meticulously worked on each detail to bring drivers the most intuitive driving experience ever. The new 208 is a classic example of just how far the revitalised Peugeot brand has come in terms of style, technology, connectivity and desirability.

single outlet radiator grille in the centre, bearing the iconic Peugeot Lion, while the tip of the bonnet shows off the 208 badge for an added dose of exclusivity. The distinctive and daring rear design of the new 208, with its gloss black rear cluster connecting strip, is further enhanced by full LED backlights with claw effect (trim dependent). Equipped with a daytime running function, the intensity of the lights adjust automatically to light conditions, enhancing the visibility of the vehicle both day and night.

weight reduction, improved aerodynamics and reduced rolling resistance. The platform also provides for greater acoustic and thermal comfort on board, and lower vibration levels. In addition to standard body colours and the optional Black Diamond roof, the new Peugeot 208 is on offer with a range of colours to reflect the car’s energetic character - Faro Yellow, triple coat Vertigo Blue, and Elixir Red with an additional topcoat that deepens the colour depth, with many other colour options also available.

Trim & Engine Options.

New-Generation of Peugeot i-Cockpit; The new Peugeot 208 benefits from a new-generation of the ingenious Peugeot i-Cockpit - now an inseparable part of the Peugeot DNA. Depending on the trim, the 3D instrument panel displays information at two levels. On the upper digital pad, information is projected in hologram form, where data is displayed closer or further away from the driver’s eye depending on the function, importance or urgency, thereby increasing reaction responses. Sporting toggle switches, the new 208 is available with a 5, 7 or 10” touchscreen, depending on trim and options selected.

Sporty Look & Wide Stance.

Trim levels in the Peugeot 208 consist of entry-level Active, mid-spec Allure, and range-topping GT variants. Standard items across all levels include Automatic Emergency Braking, Active Safety Brake (night function, cyclists, pedestrians), Extended Traffic Sign Recognition, manual airconditioning, electric mirrors (heated), rear parking sensors, push button start, electric front windows, and many more comfort, convenience and safety features. The new 208 is available with a choice of 3 Puretech petrol engines – a 1.2 litre 75bhp (5-speed manual) in Active trim, a 1.2 litre 100bhp (6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic) in all trim levels, and a 1.2 litre 130bhp (8-speed automatic) in Allure Pack and GT variants, along with a 1.5-litre BlueHDi turbo-diesel engine with 100bhp (6-speed manual) which is exclusively available in Active and Allure Pack trim levels.

The new Peugeot 208 is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor, revealing a distinctive bodyline with clean, taut lines. Wide shaped wings, body curves, and a pared-back windscreen underscore the sporty look, whilst the familiar Peugeot full LED 3-claw headlight signature (trim dependent) is immediately recognisable. The front bumper contains a perfectly integrated,

Additionally, an all-electric powertrain (badged e-208) is available across the entire trim range. Each petrol and diesel engine in the new 208 is compliant with the latest stringent EURO 6 emissions controls, and are fitted with stop/start functionality for greater efficiency. Built on Peugeot’s new common modular production platform, the 208’s CO2 emissions are reduced through

Strong & Confident Personality. Available with a choice of petrol, diesel or electric powertrains, the new 208 features the latest-generation of Peugeot’s ingenious i-Cockpit and 3D head-up display, together with a range of driving aids usually reserved for much more expensive models. Asserting a youthful, energetic image, the new 208 boasts a sleek, quality design and high-end look that is perfectly in keeping with the Peugeot brand’s upmarket strategy. From the very first glance, it is clear to see that the new 208 possesses a strong and confident personality. The low-slung silhouette, long bonnet and sensual curves hint at its sporty and seductive spirit, while its handsome good looks provide a real feelgood factor, helping the new 208 to stand out in the crowded supermini market.

In addition to the door bins and glovebox, there are 3 additional storage areas (depending on version), including a large storage area under the armrest between the front seats, an easy-access tray in front of the gear lever and a clever concealable storage space in the central console that can be used to discreetly and wirelessly charge a smartphone. Boot space is equally impressive, with 311-litres available, but this increases to 1,106-litres when the rear seats are folded. Seat comfort for all occupants of the new 208 is terrific, with an adequate amount of head, leg and elbow room on offer too.

Test Car; My test car was a 208 GT 1.2-litre Puretech 100bhp 6-speed manual, which looked terrific in Cumulus Grey metallic with its contrasting black trim on the roof, wheel arches and mirror caps, while sporty two-tone alloy wheels provide even greater visual appeal. The refined petrol engine can propel the car from 0-100km in a spritely 9.9-seconds, while a fuel return of 5.5l/100km is achievable when the car is driven on a WLTP combined driving cycle. Standard GT Line equipment includes key items such as 17” diamondcut alloy wheels, Visio Park 1 (a 180-degree colour reversing camera with front & rear parking sensors), full LED headlights with Smartbeam Assist, a 10” colour touchscreen with navigation, leather-effect & cloth seats, and an 8-colour ambient lighting system for true individuality. My test car performed admirably on a variety of back roads and motorways, with the 100bhp engine pulling strongly from a standing start, while also providing plenty of punch for safe overtaking. A strong brake pedal feel ensures that the new 208 stops confidently, while an intuitive and slick six-speed manual gearbox makes the car very enjoyable to drive. Build quality throughout the new 208 is exceptional, while the car’s striking cabin design provides a real sense of occasion to every journey. Verdict, Pricing & Warranty; The Peugeot 208 is a superb car in every respect, from its striking looks and its fantastic interior, to the way it performs on a wide variety of road surfaces. Additionally, the new 208 is economical and comfortable, while Peugeot’s 5-Year/100,000km warranty comes as standard. The super-stylish 208 is priced from just €22,370 (ex-works), with my test car specification priced at €27,780 (exworks) and attracts annual road tax of just €190.

BRING ENERGY COMPANIES BACK INTO PUBLIC OWNERSHIP TO TACKLE COST OF LIVING

Measures must be taken to combat the cost of living crisis, as inflation is set to hit 8.5% over the coming months, according to David Gardiner, Workers’ Party representative for Pa l m e r s t o w n - F o n t h i l l .

Gardiner said: “There are a number of steps that the government should take to combat the crisis, such as bringing our energy companies back into public ownership.””Public ownership of our energy

companies would allow us to control energy prices, develop energy independence so that we no longer rely on fossil fuels, and keep costs down for working families.” “Wage increases for workers are also needed to match and exceed inflation, as well as the construction of mixed-income public housing available to all, with secure tenancies and rent that is genuinely affordable for working people.”The economic growth that Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil or the Greens might talk about means very little to working people. The price of everything is skyrocketing but our wages aren’t matching the increase.” “In fact, according to the Economic and Social Research Institute, real incomes are set to fall over the coming months, meaning what money you have will get you even less than it does now.” “This

crisis

has

been

ongoing for some time and can be of no surprise to the government. Despite this,

they’ve done very little to solve it. The Workers’ Party calls for real action to be

taken in the interests of working people, our families and our communities.”

GYNAECOLOGY WAITING LISTS STAY STATIC AT UHT AS GOVERNMENT FAILS TO TACKLE CRISIS TD for Dublin South West Seán Crowe has urged the government to act urgently and end the scandal of long gynaecology waiting lists, as waiting lists have remained static at worrying levels at University Hospital Tallaght. Speaking recently, Teachta Crowe said: “Figures released to Sinn Féin by the HSE reveal a shocking crisis in gynaecology waiting lists. There are currently 30,805 women waiting for a gynaecology appointment across the state. “This includes 3,051 of women on waiting lists at University Hospital Tallaght. The average waiting time for someone to be seen at UHT for a gynaecology appointment is 652 days. Almost two years. It is a damning indictment of how poorly this Government is managing the health service. “Last year, Sinn Féin was assured by the Health Minister Stephen Donnelly that these

figures were so high due to the immediate response to the pandemic. I am deeply alarmed that a year later these figures have not moved at all. It is clear that there is a very concerning ongoing crisis in our gynaecology waiting lists which has been continuing for far too long. “Behind every number is a woman anxiously waiting for healthcare that she needs. Delayed appointments lead to delayed care, which can in turn lead to delayed diagnoses and delayed treatment. This is unacceptable. Women in Dublin South West deserve better. “It is not enough for the government to express surprise every year at these figures, while failing to address the problem. The time for action is now. Lip service is not good enough. We need to see a proper plan in place to address this crisis. Sinn Féin is committed to holding the government to account on this until patients see the changes that are needed.”

BEALTAINE FESTIVAL 2022 LAUNCHES PROGRAMME OF EVENTS

Age & Opportunity is proud to present this year’s Bealtaine Festival to you. For the first time since 2019, the majority of Bealtaine 2022 will be held in-person, with many events also taking place online. This year they are giving attendees the chance to reconnect and celebrate once again! Taking into account how tough the past couple of years have been, the team wanted to make this year its most inspiring celebration of diversity, culture, age, and life yet. Being a festival celebrating all aspects of life, Age & Opportunity has ensured the lineup of events at this year’s festival is varied and vibrant, drawing on themes and stories from the LGBTQ+

community in Flikkers Come As You Were, a series of events remembering and celebrating the Flikkers Disco era at the Hirschfeld Centre, inviting all, especially older, members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community to dance and celebrate this seminal period of social and cultural activism; to insights from various communities in Love Song Part 1: Communities of dissent, which sees Dublinborn singer-songwriter, composer, writer, and theatre-maker Seán Millar, with a choir of performers and guest singers, perform and contextualise a curated song-cycle of pieces from his decades long engagement with communities going through profound change. With tickets for the festival

events now available, Bealtaine invites all to come and revel in culture and togetherness. The festival team wants to highlight the idea of inclusivity and accessibility and will offer both in-person and online events that cater to the differing abilities and preferences of attendees while also taking into consideration their health and wellbeing in the midst of the ongoing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Speaking on the theme of this year’s festival, Bealtaine Festival Artistic Director Dr. Tara Byrne said: “Over the last few years we have witnessed a monumental shift in the nature of society caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. While it’s hard to comprehend the full extent of our losses as yet, many of us have gained a new appreciation of the role that personal resilience plays in our lives. As part of this, our collective sense of in(ter)dependence has strengthened and fittingly, this represents our current Bealtaine theme. As we enter Spring/Summer and hopefully transition out of the worst of Covid-19, we reach a ‘threshold moment’ once again where we can turn towards each other and look to the ‘sure promise of oncoming summer’ (From Theo Dorgan’s Bealtainecommissioned essay, We Have Each Other Still).I like to think of Bealtaine as our link to that summer.” Tickets to all festival events are available here: https:// bealtaine.ie/events-2022/
