Dear Friends, On behalf of the Greater Newport Area Chamber, welcome to our scenic Northeast corner of Washington and the western-most point of the Idaho Panhandle. We invite you to explore the friendly communities of Newport, Oldtown, Diamond Lake, Cusick, and Usk. You’ll find breathtaking beauty in rugged mountains and evergreen forests, and if you love the outdoors, you’ll fit right-in with the locals. Summer is the best time to enjoy our lakes and the Pend Oreille River Water Trail, where paddlers will get a fresh perspective from a river’s point of view. If you’re interested in history and culture, we invite you to learn about our pioneer, timber, and mining history, and about our area’s first inhabitants, the Kalispel Tribe of Indians. With festivals, fairs, car shows, and rodeos, you’ll find summertime fun every weekend. And we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the variety of friendly retail stores, boutique shops, and restaurants. We hope you enjoy your time with us.

Shopping For such a naturally spectacular neck of the woods, you might be surprised to know that the Greater Newport Area is just as well known throughout the region for one of the less “outdoorsy” forms of recreation – shopping! Let us introduce you to a sampling of our local retailers that make shopping here a whole lot of fun.

Just for her

It all started a few years back when a few visionary shop owners came together to launch Who Let the Girls Out!?! – a semiannual Saturday shop hop where hundreds of ladies from far and wide descend upon Newport and Oldtown to enjoy the party atmosphere (complete with complimentary sips, sweets and photo booths), discover stylish finds and get their “passports” stamped for a chance to win great gift certificates. Small town retail therapy at its absolute finest. No surprise that WLTGO!? was awarded “Event of the Year” for 2011. Although it’s only held twice a year – in mid May and early November – the participating

shops are of course open year round. While each shop has its own special something going on, the darling of the bunch would have to be the Shanty Boutique, Winner of 2011 “Business of the Year” and “Best Storefront” for 2011 & 2012. Located on Union Ave. in Newport, the Shanty is

More Shopping… Home & Garden

For those who love to bake and cook, or just plain eat and drink, The Kitchen Shoppe in Newport is a “must stop”. Typically kicking off WLTGO!? with some special product demonstrations and specials on the Friday night, this is where you can find all the latest in cooking gadgets and accessories, not to mention a fabulous wine selection. Every Friday the mouthwatering aroma of freshly-made bread and baked goods will start your weekend off just right. And for your build it, fix it, paint it, lift it, demolish it and start over, etc. tendencies, look no further than Albeni Falls Building Supply, located just over the bridge in Oldtown. If you need it for your home, shop or business, chances are they have it. Inspired by the natural beauty of our area’s lakes, rivers and forests, just over the bridge in Oldtown off Highway 2 you will find Into the Garden, Up to the Lake. Offering embellishments for home and garden, including original art, outdoor furniture, vintage goods and garden tools with an emphasis on ecofriendly and recycled products, you’ll feel completely relaxed in their cozy and comforting setting.

Variety

Yes, we even have the perfect shop for everyone in the family – from young children to fishermen, teenagers to moms and dads and even the more “experienced” sewers and quilters. Ben Franklin Hometown Variety, located in Oldtown and winner of 2012 “Business of the Year”. Offering apparel, health & beauty, seasonal merchandise, housewares, stationery, toys, crafts, fabrics and scrapbooking supplies, to name a few, Ben Franklin truly offers it all. This is just a sampling of our local retailers and shopping events, designed to entice you to stay a while and explore all that our shopping district has to offer you. A full list of local chamber retailers can be found in our Membership Directory, which we encourage you to peruse. We may not be big city, big box, but we’re full of local love that you can’t get anywhere else. Stop and shop awhile, we know you’ll love us back.

Indoor Recreation By now you’ve figured out that there’s no shortage of activities to do outside during the summer months in the Greater Newport area. But what about indoor activities for the occasional cloudy day or when your shoulders are still blistering from the weekend’s sun? Don’t worry – you can stay active both indoors and out!

Keep fit

The multi-million dollar center is an incredible asset open for the entire community and visitors to enjoy, featuring unforgettable indoor pools (lap, kids, splash park, water slides, whirlpool), weight training, fitness classes, climbing wall and full indoor gymnasium. It’s no surprise that the Kalispel Tribe of Indians was named 2011 Community Partner of the Year for their outstanding support of our community. In Newport, just across from our Visitors Center, you’ll find Club Energy, a privately owned 20,000 sq. foot full service health and fitness facility providing the latest fitness has to offer. Their certified trainers are second to none and the group classes range from Zumba to Mat Pilates, kids self-defense, Spinning, yoga and Kettlebells. Bowling

If you’re looking for more fun, less sweating, then put on your bowling shirt and head on over to OK Lanes in Oldtown for some good old fashioned bowling. There are even gutter bumpers available for young children or the bowling challenged. Food, video games and full bar on site as well so you can make a day or an evening of it!

Gaming

Finally, if you’re stuck inside with only your smartphone, tablet or computer to keep you company, try out some of the free-to-play games published by Jawfish Games – the industry leader in real-time multiplayer tournament games for mobile and web.

Strrrriiiiike!

Go outside and play! There is no shortage of local trails and active events to get you outside enjoying our area’s glorious summer weather.

Happy Trails

Lace up your shoes and hike, mountain bike or jog the nicely maintained Upper and Lower Wolf Trails nestled on the edge of Newport, totaling about 5 miles. This series of easy trails are suitable for beginners and so are perfect for families with children of all ages complete with cedar benches for resting. Nearly a mile of the Lower Wolf Trail is accessible to wheelchairs. Scenic viewpoints along the lower trails gaze out over the Pend Oreille River and all the trails traverse an open forest of Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, grand fir and larch.

If being on, by or in the water is your thing, look no further than the Pend Oreille River Water Trail. Each summer, the north-flowing Pend Oreille River plays host to hydroplane races (both in Newport and further north in Ione), snowmobile
