HARDLY A BOAR One of my favorite restaurants with a wonderful design sense that reflects more of my own aesthetic is Longman & Eagle in Logan Square, which is also an eclectic hotel. The exposed brick and industrial furnishings leave behind a rusticchic, very cool restaurant with amazing art finds. MODERN MARVEL HL23, the new landmark building by acclaimed Los Angeles architect Neil Denari, welcomed its first residents this past summer in Manhattan's reinvigorated West Chelsea neighborhood. The 14-story structure houses 11 full-floor residences—including two duplexes—with sweeping views of the High Line park, thanks to floor-to-ceiling, low-iron windows. The sleek exterior is a perfect fit for the modern, clean interiors by Danish designer Thomas Juul-Hansen. Adding to the narrative of the building, HL23 collaborated with April Magen, of Magen H. Gallery, and Nicholas Kilner, of Sebastian + Barquet, on selecting midcentury modern furnishings to adorn some spaces. hl23.com

Tony Duquette’s sunburst fixtures cast a twinkling glow on gray hues and silver metallic walls at the recently opened 2,200-square-foot private event space adjacent to Chicago’s Michelin star-rated Sepia. Gary Lee Partners, who designed the restaurant, was tasked with creating a sophisticated complement to the eatery’s sexy-cool interiors. Luxe sat down with longtime p.e. guerin fixture martin grubman for an intimate look at the history, philosophy and artistry behind the brand, started by master craftsman pierre emmanuel guerin when he left France for new york city in 1857, a cache of tiny chisels and hammers in hand. over 150 years later, p.e. guerin still stands in a four-story building on jane street whose simple façade belies the exquisite custom fixtures and hardware the company creates for clients around the world. the process remains much as it was when guerin himself first established his shop, and a visit to the foundry—the only one in existence in new york city—is akin to a trip back in time.

HOW DO YOU PRESERVE THE gUERin HERiTAgE? it’s a family business, and always has been. guerin’s great grandnephew, andrew ward, runs the company, and we maintain a staff of about 60. many come to us as apprentices. the process is the same as when guerin was creating his own pieces. we still use his original tools—some are even older than the company—and when one breaks, we repair or recreate it ourselves. it’s not like we can go to the hardware store and replace it. the molds are handmade using patterns from our archive; we have an entire room full of them, stacked in boxes and on shelves from floor to ceiling. there are probably 100,000 different designs.
WAlk US THROUgH THE AcTUAl PROcESS. every piece in the shop is created, start-to-finish, by hand. we cast exclusively in sand—we go through about six tons a year—and each mold can only be used once. an impression is made in the sand using a pattern, or an actual model, and the metal is poured into the sand. that produces a raw casting, which gets hand filed and braised before going to a finish filer who smooths and refines it. after that it goes to a chaser, or chiseler, who uses chisels and hammers to re-delineate the design. the piece is polished and sent back to the chaser for more detail and texture—that’s what gives it its life-like nature—before it’s polished again, plated and patinated.
HOW MUcH cUSTOM WORk iS DOnE? a lot. one time someone came in and said, “i love hippos. can you make me a hippo faucet?” and i said, “sure!” someone else came in and said, “can you make me an elephant doorknob?” it happens all the time and no matter the request, we find a way to do it. every goofy thing you’ve ever heard of, we’ve made it. we collaborate with designers, architects and historians. guerin’s original work can still be seen in the hall of records and the villard houses in new york city, and in many historically significant buildings across the country. more current work can be found in the new york city public library—that was a restoration commission—tom Ford’s store on madison avenue and in museums.
DiScUSS YOUR cOMMiTMEnT TO cRAFT. there’s a character inherent in metal that can only be achieved by hand. you cannot accomplish it through other means. i analogize it this way: a machine-made sweater is perfect and looks just like all the other machine-made sweaters. but a handmade sweater—while not perfect—has a quality that draws you to it. it’s the same with metalwork. a hand-chased fixture possesses detail and personality and breaks up the light in a way that’s incredibly appealing. you just want to touch it. it’s a tactile aspect you get from something created by hand that you just don’t get when it’s made by a machine.

Joyce Romanoff tells us more: The decision to open up a dedicated showroom was predicated on all the designers who asked us why we didn’t have one, and the realization that if we did, we could showcase our wallcoverings in a very specific, very unique way. We threw out typical notions of what a showroom should look like and designed our own oversized displays so
the end user can see what each surface will actually look like in their own home. Recent additions to the collection include Gilded Cloth, a hand-leafed canvas covering, and a new generation of Mother of Pearl—Flexi Mother of Pearl—that wraps around small circumferences and radiuses. Opening the showroom was probably the bravest thing we’ve ever done as a company. We picked the worst time of the economy to do it! Current project: I have a list of different chairs for which I’ve already selected fabrics to reupholster. That’s something that’s constantly evolving.
Personal style: Eclectic. All of my chairs and sofas come from Europe—Denmark, Sweden, France—and when I buy one it has to be comfortable, or I have to be able to make it comfortable when I reupholster it, no matter what the style.
What do you collect? Majolica, and antique Curtis floral engravings from the late 1700s; I love those and now I have 100 of them in the shop.

For 30 years, designer John Robert Wiltgen has obsessed over making his clients’ worlds beautiful. Now his workplace has expanded halfway around the world— from Chicago’s Gold Coast to Africa’s Ivory Coast. Which begs the question—has Wiltgen’s world expanded? Or is the globe shrinking? Wiltgen and his award-winning design team are currently completing plans for a globe-trotting family’s luxury estate in Lagos, Nigeria. With additional residential and commercial development planned there, Wiltgen is launching a new division, JRWD Nigeria, Ltd., with offices in Lagos, a port city on the Atlantic Ocean with a population of 26 million. The economic and financial capital of Africa, Lagos is the continent’s fastest growing city. “It’s exciting. This is a new country whose government is just 50 years old,” says Wiltgen, whose Chicago-based firm continues to enjoy a strong presence in the U.S. as well. On completion, the lavish Lagos residential compound will include both a mosque and a chapel for its Muslim and Christian owners who maintain residences in several other major cities throughout the world.

WHOLE GRAINS It’s sometimes easy to get lost in the sleek, minimalist lines of contemporary design; there’s something inherently soothing and appealing about a blank, uninterrupted surface. The drawback, however, is that there’s a very thin line between clean and sterile, and the team at Ornare had to tread it carefully. So, they paired the super modern cabinetry of their new Satyrium series with reclaimed wood on the walls and table and carefully sourced antique light pendants from Brazil to bring a warm, lived-in feel to this contemporary-meets-organic kitchen. “The idea was to give the space a real human element,” says Claudio Faria, director of Ornare Miami. “All of the natural woods make the straight, sharp shapes of the cabinetry more comfortable and homey.” A custom-made range hood and plenty of wine storage courtesy of GE Monogram coolers work to introduce a bit of stainless steel to the otherwise matte finishes used throughout, while illuminated shelves pop against their wooden backdrop for an unexpected touch.

CLEAN WASH Nature calls—literally—in this bathroom by Dion McCarthy, Mark Kirkhart and Andrew Alper, of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara-based DesignARC. Pocketing glass doors slide away to create a seamless transition between indoors and out, offering a stunning view of the reservoir in the distance from the cozy contours of the Agape bathtub. “Absolutely every part of the room has a view of and a strong relationship to the outdoors,” says McCarthy. “We let the site dictate the texture and color palette, which brings a nice organic quality to the space.” It’s a quality that is carried through to the knotty wood bench and chair and the interesting metallic-inspired finish of the glazed, porcelain shower tiles by Tau Ceramica from Stone Source. While the bathroom is purposely spare to keep the focus on the unique materials and panoramic vistas, the designer is careful to point out how much the space accomplishes with its less-is-more credo. “It’s not the kind of minimalism you see in a museum,” says McCarthy. “There’s an effortless accessibility to it that speaks unabashedly to and about the human body.”

designer Manifesto Twenty-five years after they first decided to bring a taste of European furniture design to Chicago, Richard and Barbara Gorman find that little outside their sphere of influence seems to change. “We feel there is a ‘sameness’ out there,” the couple says. “We want to show our clients new and beautiful things.” Since 1986, clients who step into the Gormans’ stand-alone showroom, Manifesto, enjoy just that—and much more. What started as a small furniture showroom “with a point of view,” featuring modern masters and a design atelier in the back, continues to expand and soar. Early in their careers, the Gormans—he’s an architect; she’s an interior designer—worked in modernist Chicago firms that practiced a disciplined and balanced approach to design. FEATURES: The main goals for this space were multipurpose, multifunction, warmth, comfort and durability. To make the family feel “at home,” a table that opens up to 120 inches was implemented to accommodate guests and extended members of the family.
FEATURES: Seaman updated this living room, giving the couple two chaise lounges, one for each homeowner, so they could relax and escape the tasks of daily life. Artistic touches can be seen in the fireplace, which makes the room seem more intimate.

I am influenced by what surrounds me on a daily basis. I am very active in design organizations, charities and networking.
Being an interior designer is a dream come true, and it’s an honor for me to be able to take my creative talents and apply them to what I really love.
A successful project, first and foremost, is determined by the client’s satisfaction. Meeting all of my clients’ needs and going beyond them is the key.
FEATURES: The main function of this room was as a gallery/ den featuring original artwork and pottery. Neutral tones, as evidenced in the draperies, allow the blue hues to really pop. The contrast makes for a very sophisticated palette of colors.

FEATURES: The goal with this space was to create a warm, tranquil, yet fully functional environment. Original artwork on the main wall and a decorative three-panel screen enlivens the dining room, making it more welcoming and conducive to dining and entertaining.
FEATURES: For these clients and their wishes, Seaman incorporated custom woodwork with column details, creating an elegant appeal. A sitting area was also added to inspire informal business conversation, complemented by a desk and pull-up chairs.

The empty canvas is every artist’s challenge. My favorite part of the creative process is creating something fresh and unique for every client each time.
Our work is all about our clients and making a difference for them. It’s satisfying knowing many clients have come back for us to help them at different stages of their lives.

I think a project is a success when I can see through my clients’ eyes that I have built something that is truly a reflection of who they are.
Today’s economy dictates a demand for multigenerational spaces—diverse living spaces to accommodate unexpected family situations.
What are the main determinants in your creative process? I primarily feed off the family dynamic. My goal and passion is to come in and turn something average and non-functional into a paradise.
FEATURES: The topiary in front and spiraled junipers throughout the landscape design helped create a statement that rivaled the eccentric and over-the-top characteristics of the home’s structure, without overpowering it.

DaviD Weinberg PhotograPhy Since pouring himself professionally into the world of photography nearly a decade ago, David Weinberg has found a kindred spirit in the unexpected. Whether shooting narratives, abstracts and even his travels around the world, the former business executive seeks to capture the “other” dimension of his subjects. “What appeals to me are images that are unusual—things that are out of place,” Weinberg says. “I look for inner beauty.” The search for what he describes as that “hidden unreality” began in earnest after spending much of his adult life working for his family’s Skokie-based automotive gasket company, Fel-Pro. Weinberg, who was co-chairman when the family sold the business 10 years ago, seized the opportunity to pursue his passion full-time. His inspired, eye-catching and often-challenging photographic work quickly found an audience, including fine-art collectors. “My work is often shot in or through another medium,” he says. “I’ll shoot through frosted glass. Through plastic. The reflection of one building in another. The reflections are there, but people don’t look at the buildings that way. That’s what is attractive to me—the things that people normally don’t see.” Weinberg’s work will be featured from January to March at the Elmhurst Art Museum in DuPage County.

A successful series moves people; it compels them to ask questions. Currently, I’m moved by the idea of reality and fictional reality—what we see versus what we imagine.
A series called “Mr. Wild’s Garden” is a photographic narrative taken in Wisconsin through the plastic of greenhouses that speaks to deep emotions that I held as a child.
I’m currently working with an infrared photographic process that abstracts patterns on the surface of the water.

The couple was smitten with
the apartment’s gracious proportions, breathtaking treetop views of the park and dazzling Art Deco Terrazzo floor, which proved to be its pièce de résistance. The shimmering surface, an unexpected and brashly glamorous feature in the otherwise neoclassical space, “is what inspired them to buy it,” says interior designer Eva Quateman. But back to the ‘almost.’ They also wanted outside space. “He’s the kind of guy who likes to sit in the yard and smoke a cigar with his dog by his side,” chuckles architect Marvin Herman. The couple called on him when they noticed that the apartment below had a balcony jutting off its southern wall, and they decided to try the same tactic.

With the sale contingent on the homeowners’ ability to move forward with the project, Herman went to work getting approval “from every other tenant, the City and the various landmark and lakefront organizations. It was no small feat,” he admits. Once approved, he and Quateman went to work on implementing the small but momentous addition and renovating the rest of the apartment.

“It needed new mechanicals and electrical, an entirely new kitchen, restoration work on the millwork and trim in all the rooms,” ticks off Herman. “And it lacked a powder room because the bathrooms were all en suite,” notes Quateman, who solved the quandary by co-opting one of the five original maid’s rooms in the back wing. To give it more grandeur and make it look original to the apartment, she also widened the back hallway that led to it and clad it all with a Terrazzo floor to match the foyer.

Quateman was equally inventive with the décor, adding drama and intrigue to handsome traditional furnishings with lustrous decorative paint treatments and equally incandescent silks on furnishings and

windows. “Everything was chosen to play to the hues in the Terrazzo floor, which shift in different light conditions,” she explains. A bespoke pearlescent paint treatment in the living room blends jade, ivory, black and gold to achieve a soft, mossy hue “that seems to change color every time you look at it, just like a stormy sky. One minute it’s green, the next it’s gray and the next it’s blue,” notes Quateman. Pearlescent paint also gave the well-worn but beautifully crafted paneling in the dining room a fresh and far more dramatic demeanor. But this time Quateman reversed the equation with black instead of alabaster, tinting it with bronze and a touch of white to become thunder gray.

But Quateman’s brightest moment is heralded by the new balcony. She transformed the room it edges into a terrace in the sky, complete with a handsome green slate floor, richly mottled limestone walls, a quaintly carved fountain and a vine-encrusted trellis overhead—the last three elements via a painstakingly done trompe l’oeil paint job. The imaginative approach was astonishingly effective. “We built the balcony, added the French doors and installed the floor, but had no idea what they were doing with the rest of the room. We were so surprised when we saw it done. It’s remarkable. You really feel as if you’re in a garden,” marvels builder Eric Schulz. And that’s just what the Bernicks wanted. L

warmth. every homeowner craves it,
but when your new
place has floor-to-ceiling, steel-rimmed windows and your husband has a thing for edgy iron furnishings, the bar is set a little higher. This Gold Coast home is set a little higher, too. The owners, a newly empty-nester couple, made two life-changing decisions at once. One: to swap their single-family Lincoln Park house for a three-bedroom apartment high up in a sophisticated new building designed by Booth Hansen. And two: to change their look from modernist, kid-friendly furnishings to something elegant and very grown-up. That necessitated a third decision—to call on longtime family friend Julia Edelmann to midwife the birth of their new life. It was a good thing Edelmann knew the family so well, because otherwise the couple’s divergence of opinion might have been a little daunting. “My husband loves an industrial look but I like a cozier feel,” says the wife, mother of two twenty-something children. “For me, even the architecture here had to be warmed up. When my husband said he really wanted to buy this modern apartment I worried that it would be a little too stark.” So why buy it? Because the solution was already on the family’s speed dial. Besides being a friend, Edelmann is also a nationally celebrated designer whose dazzling, high-end projects all have one thing in common: family-friendly comfort.

“The first challenge was the huge columns in the middle of the living space. They were raw concrete, and very cold,” says Edelmann. “I called in faux painter Patrick Rouillier to give them a subtle mottled treatment to create the illusion that they’re smaller than they really are.” She then sheathed the open plan living space’s walls in a luscious Donghia grass cloth, “because it has a three-dimensional quality. You get a lot of movement when you look at these walls. We needed something strong, but not distracting, to balance the fantastic city views.” One by one, Edelmann ticked off the rooms where the architectural mood needed a little firing up. The kitchen got a bigger island, more conducive to gathering family and friends, as well as a show-stopping wall of ceramic and glass tile in a whimsical modern pattern. Edelmann designed it to bring out the color of the new countertops and the Poggenpohl cabinets. And the master bath was completely gutted and refitted with sumptuous marble and rich silvery-gray tiles.

mixed emulsions The living room sectional is in a Creations Metaphores mohair with Great Plains cotton velvet cushions and Samuel & Sons leather trim. A swirling patterned rug from Atelier Lapchi warms the marble floor while a lamp repurposed from a wallpaper printing roller, discovered at Scout, brings in the patina of age.
twilight zone A painting by Kevin Berlin, found at Kasia Kay Art Projects, is as eye-catching as the breathtaking city sunsets enjoyed from the dining room. Chairs from Crate & Barrel, covered in an elegant textured fabric from Pollack, tone down the room’s reflective surfaces.

Astonishingly, the total redo took less than six months. As the homeowner admiringly puts it, “Julia is talented, agreeable—and fast!” The speed of decision-making was the more remarkable given that the owners reused only a handful of pieces from their previous home. “Here they wanted furniture that was a little dressier, more timeless,” Edelmann says. So in came a dining room table custom designed with a lacquered ebony finish, and an elegant Dennis & Leen dining room chandelier that Edelmann says she chose to juxtapose “modern sleek against formal decadence.” A self-confessed “fabric addict,” Edelmann says she also thought it was important to have lots of texture and pattern. She went so as far as to use two different fabrics (minimum!) on every upholstered piece in the

living room. For example, the cushions of a pair of A. Rudin armchairs are covered in vibrant leaves, Groundworks’ Botanico Velvet, while their frames are in a nubby Clarence House linen. “I treated the furniture like works of art,” says Edelmann, “because you see every piece from all angles.” The homeowner says in their old home the family never set foot in the living room. But here, they’re loving every square inch of their new life. “This place is so elegant, but still so comfortable to hang out in,” enthuses the wife. ’Cause Baby, it’s warm inside. L luxe interiors

sure, the entire chicago hotel was gut renovated when it was converted into residential condos, but it’s not likely that many of the units—if any, except for this one—look as though you’ve time-traveled back to early
20 t h - c e n t u r y f r a n c e .
But that’s exactly the feel in this particular residence, built for a philanthropic husband and wife. The three-bedroom space would be reconstructed as a one bedroom that could accommodate and accentuate the owners’ French Art Deco collections of museum-worthy Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann furniture and René Lalique glassworks that the passionately self-educated husband was still putting together. And to give these furnishings a proper environment, the interior design, by Heather Wells and Bruce Fox, and the architecture, by Steve Rugo, should defer to—and complement— the collections. Together with general contractor Neil Peck, the team transformed the space into a residence that’s a contemporary study of

rooms open unto themselves through a series of pocket doors. And since Art Deco furnishings were generally made of rich materials, similar luxurious elements were sourced: Floors throughout are onyx or patterned walnut, mimicking the era’s fondness for marquetry; wallpaper is silvery; and ovals, a common motif in Deco, are seen in carpet patterns and table shapes. Indeed, ovals influenced the design of the entry rotunda, where niches and custom shelving display a collection of Lalique vases meticulously

the size and layout of the room.” There’s an emphasis on these kinds of details throughout the house: The celadon-painted living room walls feature a strié in which a vertical application of glaze suspends chips of light-reflecting mica, and all window casings feature full-height door jambs and silver leaf trim. “That’s a trick from Gothic architecture,” notes Fox. “The verticality carries the eye up, making the room look taller,” he says, explaining that it also gives the walls a luminous, textured feel. Even the media room’s built-in cabinetry, made of olive wood, has an iridescent quality that lends a sense of movement as you walk by. “A lot of what we did is shiny,” says Wells,

“because Art Deco pieces are highly glossed and often made of rare wood that has some interesting complication to it.” The husband became interested in Lalique glass some 20 years ago after reading a book by Nicholas Dawes, an antiques dealer and appraiser who’s an acknowledged authority on the designer. The soon-to-be collector tracked down Dawes in New York City and was so impressed by Dawes’ knowledge that his interest was even further piqued; soon he was reading up on different expressions of Art Deco. In the process, he discovered the architect and designer Ruhlmann— and the obsession took hold.

“Collecting is an exciting adventure for me,” says the husband, who finds it as rewarding as the financial payoff for investing in the valuables. Recalling one journey, he describes how the dining room’s grand 400-pound Lalique chandelier—it hangs from a steel structure that had to be built into the ceiling—was one he was first shown in a garage in Europe. Even the dining table underneath the chandelier, a Ruhlmann piece so big that Wells made a paper template of it to see if it would even fit in the room, was once owned by Andy Warhol. “Every piece,” says the proud homeowner, “has a story.” L

“the design was complicated,” says architect gary frank of the shingle-style home he executed on c h i c a g o ’ s no r t h s h o r e .
The owners, a young couple with
two children, hired Frank to design an energy efficient New Englandstyle dwelling that would feel rambling yet intimate, traditional yet contemporary. Making that seemingly incongruous directive even more difficult was the home’s pie-shaped lot, which narrows near the street and splays out toward the rear of the property. “So the house was built to mirror the lot,” says Jon Kogan, whose company spent nearly three years bringing Frank’s design to life, which includes unique features such as a below-ground sports court for basketball and yoga, and energy efficient components such as foam insulation and geothermal in-floor heating. “We spent a lot of time meeting with the architect and designers to ensure that the house, while large in size, is warm and inviting,” Kogan says.

on the massive fireplace in the adjacent screened-in porch and on the large outdoor patio that’s accessible from the major shared first floor living areas. “We simplified things, so you see the same materials from one space to another,” Frank says. According to designer Jon Motsinger, repeating materials and finishes throughout the house established a calm palette that de-emphasized the scale of the home and allowed him to compose striking vignettes. “One of the biggest challenges was coming up with floor plans for a space with so few walls, but if you study your sightlines, the interior becomes a playground,” says Motsinger. The designer concepted many of the home’s light fixtures and furnishings, including an iron and glass chandelier with Edison filament bulbs that he commissioned from lighting designer Ted Harris, and which hangs in the dining room above an antique Chinese table from the owners’ collection. luxe interiors

In the kitchen, Motsinger designed a banquette that effectively transforms the island and a nearby table into a single feature conveniently located under a pair of modern black pendants, which hang from beams built into a dramatic 35-foot-long skylight. Frank created it by extending the footprint of the first floor out beyond the second level. “That skylight was life changing for the entire house,” Motsinger says. With no exterior windows to work with, kitchen designer Kathryn Walder Edwards opted to place the sinks in the island facing the family area. She also worked with Motsinger to ensure that the kitchen and bathrooms are as functional as they are stylish. “The wife is all about the aesthetic, but she’s grounded in the practical, so we spent a lot of time making sure that everything worked well for her in the kitchen.”

HigH Style It’s fitting that Zang Toi’s fashion atelier is dubbed “House of Toi.” It is, after all, where the designer crafts his luxury couture collections that, unbeknownst to many, bear striking similarities to his Upper East Side pied-à-terre. “There’s an element of glamour that shows in both my home design and fashion line,” Toi says. s p i r i t a w a r d s 2011 Luxe Interiors + Design proudly sponsored the 12th annual Spirit Awards benefiting Designs for Dignity. The celebration was held on May 5, at The Chicago Cultural Center in the Sidney R. Yates Gallery. The event raised a record amount for Designs for Dignity and attendance included more than 450 guests. Congratulations to the 2011 Spirit Award honorees: Barbara Warren, Founder’s Award; Edwin Hanlon, Spirit Award and Benjamin Moore Company, Sustainability Award. Guests enjoyed scrumptious food provided by Food for Thought. Susan Fredman, founder, has expanded Designs for Dignity into San Francisco and recently New York.
