What Ignites You? Established in 1973, Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) is a community-based, public university that provides interdisciplinary training of health professionals. The University is home to a College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy and College of Graduate Studies. ACCREDITATION Northeast Ohio Medical University, a public institution established in 1973, is fully accredited through the North Central Association (NCA). What Ignites Us? CAMPUS CHANGE NEOMED is transforming its campus with several phases of campus expansion during the next two years in order to offer improved education and research facilities, larger accommodations designed to address growing class sizes and expansion, facilities that are available to the surrounding community and additional student life amenities. UNIVERSITY MASCOT Who says you need a sports team to have spirit? NEOMED recently unveiled the Walking Whale as the University’s official mascot!

RESIDENCY MATCH RESULTS An overwhelming 79 percent of students from the College of Pharmacy who applied for a residency in 2013 matched into a residency position (well above the 63 percent national average for 2013). Fifty-three percent of the College of Medicine’s graduating class will remain in Ohio for their residencies, 29 percent of which will remain in NEOMED’s hospital partners, and 44 percent of graduates will continue their training in a primary care field such as family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics or obstetrics/gynecology.

HOME TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE AMSA Nida Degesys, a 2013 graduate from the College of Medicine, was elected to serve as the national president for the American Medical Student Association (AMSA). Degesys has delayed her residency in order to chair the AMSA Board of Trustees, the organization’s highest governing body, and oversee the overall direction for the organization.

Our Campus NEOMED has built (and continues to build) outstanding facilities for teaching, researching and learning. All lecture halls offer state-of-the-art lecture capture systems that record the instructor and all visuals associated with the lecture, which are then available to students for study purposes. Through the William G. Wasson, M.D., Center for Clinical Skills Training, Assessment and Scholarship, students have the opportunity to develop clinical and communication skills through simulated activities.

A 130-station Multidisciplinary Lab is fully automated and allows students from all three colleges to meet as one, learning side-by-side. The Pharmacy Practice Lab is a 35-station laboratory equipped with the most advanced instructional technology available to enhance group and individual instruction. The four story, 100,000 square foot Research and Graduate Education Building opened in 2013 and includes stateof-the art open biomedical laboratories to support collaborative research along with sophisticated core facilities.


Other highlights include the Dr. Zouhair and Carol Yassine Gross Anatomy Laboratory, the Oliver Ocasek Regional Medical Information Center, the newly renovated courtyard and the Village apartments! Many exciting new additions are coming in 2014, including a new Health, Wellness and Medical Education Complex that will offer a pool, workout facilities, lecture halls, conference center and home for the Bio-Med Science Academy, a STEM+M high school.

If you thought you knew what campus life was like at NEOMED, think again. With The Village at NEOMED only steps from the main campus, NEOMED campus life will never be the same. The Village features fully furnished one and two bedroom units with private study space, game rooms and planned activities for residents. Students can find spaces for individual or group study all around campus. The University boasts more than 50 student organizations, ranging from student governments to honor societies to interest groups to social groups. Service learning is an integral part of both curricular and extra-curricular activities. Northeast Ohio Medical University’s M.D. degree curriculum is designed to develop the characteristics that people want to see in their physicians: competence, communication, caring, curiosity, character and a commitment to community. The four-year curriculum fuses the behavioral, biological, clinical, community health and social sciences with the humanities. First Year (M1) Students concentrate on the basic courses essential to the understanding of the science of medicine. Students will have their first encounter with patients through preceptor experiences and learn how to conduct effective medical interviews in the longitudinal Doctoring course. Second Year (M2) Serves as the bridge from the classroom and laboratory to clinical settings. A study of body system modules will allow you to concentrate on basic pathophysiology processes and the mechanisms underlying clinical signs and disease.


Third Year (M3) Traditional clerkship year that includes six core required clinical rotations in family medicine, psychiatry, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine and surgery. Forth Year (M4)

Caring for the community What is Primary Care? Primary Care is the health care given by a health care provider, usually as the initial point of consultation. These individuals (physician, pharmacist, physicians assistant or nurse) often refer the patient to other specialists that are needed. Primary care physicians are often the first point of contact for a patient seeking medical treatment. Primary care physicians focus on comprehensive and continuous care for the patient’s physical and mental well-being. When additional treatments or diagnoses are needed, it is the primary care physician who coordinates with consulting physicians in order to improve and maintain the patient’s care and understanding of his or her illness. The primary care specialties include: family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics and geriatrics. Obstetrics/ 10 | 2013-14 viewbook

gynecology is also sometimes considered a primary care specialty. NEOMED was established in 1973 to meet a critical need for primary care physicians in Northeast Ohio. The University is also focused on training future physicians and pharmacists in providing excellent care in urban and rural environments. Meeting the health Care Industry’s Needs With the projected shortage in primary care providers, our health care system must produce more health care workers in primary care fields and address the need for providers in practice settings that are in underserved rural and urban areas. Responding to these challenges, NEOMED is partnering with other higher education and health care institutions, clinical providers, businesses, communities

and individuals, to meet the challenges of creating a more diverse health care workforce that cares for underserved populations. NEOMED seeks to improve the health and economic vitality of the Northeast Ohio region through its Education for Service initiative. This initiative will foster local talent, build partnerships and integrate resources to leverage greater success, engage our communities and reduce financial barriers for students. The College of Pharmacy offers an original and progressive curriculum that blends classroom and practice experiences to give graduates the knowledge, skills and professionalism that is necessary to succeed as a pharmacist. Student-centered learning is a critical component; at least 30 percent of pharmacy courses are offered through active learning exercises. The pharmacy curriculum emphasizes the University’s core values of competence, communication, caring,

P h a r m a cy C u r r i c u l u m Year 1 Theme: Dosage Forms The year one theme of dosage forms provides you with knowledge and experience to: 1) select appropriate dosage forms for a given situation, 2) research the availability of dosage forms and 3) compound individualized dosage forms. A series of foundational science courses during the year will provide a strong base on which to build your pharmacy knowledge. You will interact with medicine students in classrooms and in simulated patient care situations. You will also be exposed to various pharmacy practice settings (chain pharmacy, independent pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, specialty settings Year 2 Theme: Medication Use System The year two theme of medication use systems provides knowledge and insight into managing pharmacy duties and personnel, dispensing medications safely and recognizing the importance of pharmacology, biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics when selecting the correct dosage regimen and formulation for the patient. You will utilize this knowledge during practice site visits. You will also become certified in several skills, including administering immunizations and Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services. Interaction with medicine students will continue with a comprehensive self-directed interprofessional team project. Year 3 Theme: Medication Safety The year three theme of patient safety provides students an understanding of existing federal laws and their application in the practice setting and further develops knowledge and skills needed to design the optimal therapeutic regimen for a disease or situation and to monitor and report less than optimal outcomes (adverse events, medication errors, noncompliance, etc.) based on the best available evidence. Experiences in class and in practice settings in year three will prepare you to enter full-time patient contact in year four where you will share in the care of and decisions concerning patients. Year 4 Theme: Patient-Centered Care The year four theme of patient-centered care provides an extensive exposure to direct patient care at ambulatory care, acute care, community pharmacy, and health-system pharmacy settings in which you influence the decision-making and outcomes of therapeutic management of disease conditions. The fourth year will end with a Pharmacy Capstone designed to assist you with the transition to becoming a licensed pharmacist and the next stages of your professional lives.

College of Graduate Studies

BIOETHICS PROGRAM This nine credit program, which can be acquired in nine months to two years, is ideal for the busy student or health care professional who wishes to combine clinical practice with ethics consultation, education and research. Students take coursework in the areas of ethical, social and legal issues facing professionals in the health sciences. INTEGRATED PHARMACEUTICAL MEDICINE Integrated pharmaceutical medicine is the scientific discipline concerned with the discovery, development, formulation, delivery, pharmacologic and toxicologic evaluation, registration and scientific monitoring of drug entities for the benefit of the public health. This program will provide graduate students interested in entering careers in the pharmaceutical industry and academia with an excellent, integrated pharmaceutical medicine graduate education at the M.S. and Ph.D. degree levels. 16 | 2013-14 viewbook

The M.S. degree option requires a total of 45 credit hours (including 10 hours of pharmaceutical medicine research and 10 hours of thesis work) culminating in a written thesis and thesis defense. The Ph.D. degree option requires a total of 90 credit hours culminating in a written dissertation and dissertation defense. Course topic examples include, but are not limited to: Principles of Drug Action, Pharmaceutical Medicine Research Methods, Statistics (with an emphasis on biostatistics), Medical Pharmacology, Biopharmaceutics and Biotechnology, Drug Regulatory Affairs, Intellectual Property Issues Pertaining to Drug Development, and Clinical Trials Design. There are also elective courses pertaining to students’ major interests (e.g., cellular and molecular neuroscience).


MASTER OF PUBLIC HEALTH This is a consortium program with The University of Akron, Cleveland State University, Northeast Ohio Medical University, Ohio University and Youngstown State University. This nontraditional program is geared toward working professionals and students who would like to broaden their role in improving community health, especially in this changing health care environment. Courses are delivered through a hybrid of teaching methods: interactive videoconferencing, online asynchronous lectures and face-to-face instruction. Core courses are taught on Saturdays to accommodate working students. Public Health Concepts, Biostatistics in Public Health, Epidemiology in Public Health, Social and Behavioral Sciences in Public Health, Health Services Administration in Public Health, Environmental Health

Sciences in Public Health, Public Health Practice and Issues, Grant Writing for Public Health Practice, Capstone Project I, Capstone Project II and Electives. HEALTH-SYSTEM PHARMACY ADMINISTRATION PROGRAM This program is designed for those who wish to build on their clinical competence to develop administrative, financial and leadership skills related to health-system administration, which will enable them to manage complex health-system pharmacy departments at the institutional and department levels. The combined M.S./residency program requires 40 semester hours and must be completed in two years. The M.S. degree only track may be completed in two or three years. The curriculum includes courses

provided through the NEOMED College of Pharmacy and courses provided in the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.)/ Health Care Administration curriculum through the Cleveland State University Monte Ahuja College of Business. Students may also enroll in additional management courses offered in the Health Care Administration curriculum at Cleveland State University, or a different finance course in place of Financial Accounting in the first semester. Students may take Responsible Conduct of Research or Pharmacy Ethics courses in the NEOMED Bioethics curriculum, and residents may complete a 14-hour teaching certificate program offered by the NEOMED College of Pharmacy.

Admissions Acc e l e r at e d B . S . / M . D. D e g r e e P r o g r a m THE PROGRAM NEOMED has the oldest accelerated combined degree program in the state of Ohio and one of only 18 accelerated programs in the nation. Students apply to the program during their senior year of high school and, upon admission, enjoy the benefits of having a reserved seat in the College of Medicine when they begin their college program. They earn a combined bachelor of science and doctor of medicine (B.S./M.D.) degree in only six or seven years. During the undergraduate portion of the pathway, students take premedical course work at an accelerated pace of two or three years at one of the three universities in the NEOMED educational consortium: The University of Akron, Kent State University and Youngstown State University. NEOMED’s

main campus is centrally located to all three universities, less than 35 miles from each. Classes are attended full time on one of these campuses, including summers. Students have vacations between semesters, in the spring, and over the winter holidays. ELIGIBILITY Northeast Ohio Medical University takes great pride in the quality of its students. D e g r e e P r o g r a m s THE PROGRAMS In order to meet the ever-growing primary health care needs of the region, Northeast Ohio Medical University has developed partnerships with Cleveland State University, Hiram College and Miami University to establish baccalaureate to M.D. pathway programs. The focus of these pathways is strategically aligned with the mission of all institutions, including NEOMED’s commitment to primary care, medically underserved populations and diversity in health care. There will be five seats reserved in the College of Medicine for both the Hiram and Miami partnerships and 35 reserved

seats for the Cleveland State partnership in combination with a Post-Baccalaureate/M.D. partnership. Students in the Cleveland State pathway will complete an undergraduate curriculum that will include courses and seminars in urban health at CSU and pursue an Urban Health concentration at NEOMED. Established in 2013, the partnerships with Hiram College and Miami University will also have unique curricula that will align with the mission of the institutions.

ELIGIBILITY In order to be eligible for these Baccalaureate/M.D. pathways, students must be currently enrolled at one of the partnered schools with sophomore standing. Academically, students must currently have a 3.20 college GPA and must have had a 3.00 high school GPA (or a 21 on their ACT). D e g r e e P r o g r a m THE PROGRAM Most post-baccalaureate programs offer courses that prepare individuals for entrance to a medical school or strengthen the student’s transcript. The NEOMEDCSU program offers students in the PostBaccalaureate/M.D. program the necessary pre-medical courses and a reserved seat at the College of Medicine. Students will complete a Bachelor of Science degree in health science with an urban health concentration at CSU prior to matriculating to NEOMED. The two-year postbaccalaureate curriculum at CSU will also include urban health courses and seminars.

ELIGIBILITY In order to be eligible for the PostBaccalaureate/M.D. pathway, students must hold a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. accredited college or university upon entry into the program. Academically, students must have a 3.00 college GPA or 300 GRE score (minimum 150 in each section) or 21 MCAT total score (minimum of 7 in each section).

D e g r e e P r o g r a m THE PROGRAM Typically, 20 percent of NEOMED’s first-year students in the M.D. degree program are admitted via the traditional four-year premedicine route called direct entry. Having completed necessary undergraduate work, students admitted via this route enter directly into the four-year program. ELIGIBILITY Students must hold a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. accredited college or university upon entry into the program. Academically, students must have a 3.25 undergraduate GPA; 3.20 GPA in biology, chemistry, physics

and math; and an 8 or higher in each section of the MCAT (a 7 in one section will be accepted if the total score is 24 or above and student has 3.50 GPA or higher).

EARLY DECISION Competitive applicants to the M.D. degree program who consider NEOMED their first choice school are encouraged to apply through NEOMED’S Early Decision Program (EDP). D e g r e e P r o g r a m THE PROGRAM The mission of the College of Pharmacy is to prepare highly skilled pharmacists who play an indispensable role in a team-oriented approach to patient care and medication management services. Our graduates will emerge as competent, curious, caring pharmacists with strong communication skills, character, commitment to the community and dedication to lifelong learning. ELIGIBILITY Academically, at least a 2.50 overall college GPA is required of all applicants. Applicants for admission to the Pharm.D. degree program must complete at least two years of pre-professional coursework, earning a minimum of 72 semester hours or 105 quarter hours. A bachelor’s degree is not required, but students with a degree

APPLICATION PROCESS Students apply by completing the Pharmacy College Application Service (PharmCAS) application as early as June 1 of the year preceding anticipated enrollment in pharmacy school. I n t e g r at e d P h a r m a c e u t i c a l M e d i c i n e D e g r e e P ro g r a m Integrated pharmaceutical medicine is the scientific discipline concerned with the discovery, development, formulation, delivery, pharmacologic and toxicologic evaluation, registration and scientific monitoring of drug entities for the benefit of the public health. The main objective of the integrated pharmaceutical medicine degree program is to educate and develop first-rate scholars and independent investigators within an integrated curriculum. Graduates of this program will have a unique perspective on the linkage of pharmaceutical sciences to medical disciplines, especially with regard to disease mechanisms and targets for therapeutic interventions.

This program will provide graduate students interested in entering a career in the pharmaceutical industry and academia with an excellent integrated pharmaceutical medicine graduate education at the M.S. and Ph.D. degree levels, while benefiting from Northeast Ohio Medical University’s excellent research environment and infrastructure.

ELIGIBILITY Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in the majors of chemistry, biochemistry, any of the biological sciences, or related areas, or a combination of majors such as for a pre-pharmacy or pre-medicine baccalaureate. Academically, at least a 3.00 undergraduate GPA and/or a 3.30 graduate GPA.


Master of Public Degree H e a lt h P r o g r a m The Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree program is a consortium program with The University of Akron, Cleveland State University, Northeast Ohio Medical University, Ohio University and Youngstown State University. This nontraditional program is geared toward the working professional who would like to broaden his or her role in improving community health, especially in this changing health care environment. The program provides graduates with a foundation of public health skills and knowledge, including analytic skills, research strategies,

community assessment methods, program implementation, evaluation and policy development within an ethical and culturally sensitive perspective. ELIGIBILITY Students must hold a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. accredited college or university upon entry into the program. Academically, students must have a 2.75 undergraduate GPA or 3.00 graduate GPA and an acceptable GRE score.

B i o e t h i c s C e rt i f i c at e P r o g r a m As medical science and technology continues to advance, there is an increasing concern over professional and ethical responsibilities in providing optimal care to patients and their families, and addressing issues among colleagues and institutions including, but not limited to, effective utilization of scarce or limited resources, disclosure of conflicts of interest, balancing healthcare delivery with clinical research, and developing therapeutic relationships in light of controversial public

health policies and laws. This certificate program is designed for health care professionals and students who have the desire to explore these pragmatic issues through the lenses of ethical theory and narrative-driven humanities. This ninecredit program, which can be acquired in less than nine months, is ideal for the busy healthcare professional or student who wishes to combine clinical practice with ethics consultation, education and research.

H e a lt h - Sy s t e m P h a r m a cy Ad m i n i s t r at i o n D e g r e e P ro g r a m The Health-System Pharmacy Administration degree program offers two tracks: a combined Master of Science (M.S.) degree/ residency or just an M.S. degree. Both tracks are designed for individuals who wish to build on their professional competence to develop administrative, financial and leadership skills related to health-system administration, which will enable them to manage complex health-system pharmacy departments at the institutional and department levels.

Affording Your Education TUITION Tuition for coursework at the university will be paid directly to NEOMED. During times of undergraduate studies, tuition and fees will be assessed by your undergraduate university. FINANCIAL AID Many financial aid opportunities are available. Approximately 80 percent of students receive financial aid. The Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy are able to provide institutional funds to students who demonstrate high need. Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may be eligible for campus-based aid in the form of institutional loans and grants. We encourage you to utilize scholarship search engines on the Internet and to contact professional societies, organizations, foundations, unions, companies, religious organizations, sororities, fraternities, etc. about scholarship opportunities. Federal Stafford loans at higher graduate loan limits are available to medicine students. Students are eligible for the unsubsidized

loan ($40,500 for medical students, $33,000 for pharmacy/ M.P.H. students, $20,500 for other graduate programs) in which interest of 6.8 percent begins to accrue when the loan is disbursed. Federal GradPLUS loans are available at a higher interest rate of 7.9 percent if a student has maximized his/her Federal Stafford loan eligibility. Student Snapshots Robert Stanton College of Medicine/College of Graduate Studies NEOMED is dedicated to education and research in the health professions. The University recently offered third-year medicine student Robert Stanton the opportunity to do both ... with a full-tuition scholarship to pay the bill. Stanton was selected as recipient of the NEOMED Schizophrenia Research Scholarship, designed for medicine students who are committed to careers in biomedical research focused on the prevention and cure of schizophrenia. The scholarship will allow Stanton to complete a year of intensive research between his third and fourth years of medical training, and will pay his tuition for all three years. It will also allow him to complete an additional degree at the University – a Master of Science degree in integrated pharmaceutical medicine. During his research year, Stanton will serve as a research assistant under Altaf Darvesh, M. Pharm., Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmaceutical sciences and psychiatry, under a plan that will allow Stanton to be familiar with the pre-clinical, clinical and community-based aspects of schizophrenia research.. “Spending a year helping to work on a cure is an outstanding opportunity,” said Stanton. “My main focus will be to learn as much as possible about conducting research in this area so that I hopefully can do more later on in my career.”

Elizabeth Carter College of Pharmacy Elizabeth Carter spent four years at The Ohio State University completing undergraduate work before deciding on NEOMED to complete her pharmacy degree. She chose NEOMED because she felt at home. “Everything about the university was personalized, and the faculty, staff and current students went out of their way to make the new students feel welcomed, she said. ”After spending four years at a school with more than 60,000 students, NEOMED felt comfortable to me.” Her new ‘home’ has allowed her to really flourish. In addition to her studies, she serves as a vice president to the Student Council, is a licensed Ohio Registered Pharmacy Intern and is serving as a pharmacy intern at CVS Pharmacy and Akron General Medical Center, in addition to regular volunteer service at the Open M free clinic pharmacy in Akron, Ohio. She recently was selected by Ohio Governor, John Kasich, as the newest student representative to the NEOMED Board of Trustees. This prestigious appointment allows Carter to serve as a “voice” of the students to the University Board. As a student trustee and a pharmacist, Carter wants to set an example for future pharmacists. “I want others to view me as a well-rounded, educated professional who expresses empathy for my patients.”

Get Started Early

High school students who are interested in the health care industry can become involved in one or more of our educational and enrichment programs: HealthSuccess, Pathways to Pharmacy, HPAC or MEDCAMP. These highly competitive programs exist for students in the eighth through twelfth grade and seek to increase diverse representation at the colleges and within health care professions. MEDCAMP is a three-day intensive summer experience designed for students who are completing the eighth grade and rising into the ninth grade in the fall. This program is coordinated through Area Health Education Center (AHEC). HealthSuccess is a nine-month program for ninth through eleventh grade students. 26 | 2013-14 viewbook

The program is held monthly and strives to better prepare prospective medicine or pharmacy students for professional education through their participation in various activities and workshops. Pathways to Pharmacy is a summer program for sophomores and juniors, offering work-based learning experiences, personal development workshops and math and science enrichment activities. The program provides an opportunity to expand student interest in the pharmacy profession and increase the number of students who graduate from high school and pursue pharmacy as a career. In addition, NEOMED plays a vital role in the Health Professions Affinity Community (HPAC) program. HPAC is designed to

support and guide ninth to twelfth graders who have an interest in extending their connection to, and preparing for, a career in the health professions.
