Coping with mother nature

F

all is here but you wouldn’t guess it with the weather we’ve been having across North Carolina. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures have reached recordbreaking highs in late September and October. The NC Drought Advisory warned that the central and western parts of the state are in a moderate drought, which can impact our soil conditions and plant production. Let’s hope the extended heat and lack of rainfall in parts of the state will not have an adverse effect on our fall shipping season. We can all breathe a sigh of relief when hurricane season winds down. The biggest threat this year was Hurricane Dorian. It swept through Ocracoke Island and damaged hundreds of homes, but its effects were minimal in the rest of the state. Meteorologists predicted the storm to have a much bigger impact than it did. Very little, if any, damage was reported from our nursery and landscape members. Our hearts go out to those recovering in the Outer Banks, but I’m sure everyone is grateful the damage was not as extensive as Hurricane Florence last year. While we’re on the subject of menaces in nature, don’t forget to read the article by NCDA&CS weed specialist, Dr. Bridget Lassiter. Two plants of concern in North Carolina right now are Purple Loosestrife and Yellow Floating Heart. They’re both on the Federal Noxious Weed list and are considered highly invasive. In South Carolina, a variety of Floating Heart grew from a two-acre infestation to over 2,000 acres in only two years! They have been found in locations in our state, so the NCDA&CS is asking you to be on lookout for these plants so they can be found and controlled quickly.

Also, take a look at the recap of the annual Robert Cagle Memorial Golf Tournament. I’m not a golfer myself, but I know several of my colleagues like to spend an afternoon on the greens. I heard a great time was had by everyone in attendance, and they were able to raise funds for scholarships through the generosity of the sponsors. I’m proud to be a part of such a supportive industry.

NCNLA EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Green & Growin’ offers opportunities to build skills and connect with customers and suppliers

It's never easy to find ways to improve something that is working well, but I believe the VLS attendees came up with some real winners.

n late September, I passed my one-year anniversary with NCNLA. At times, it feels as if I have only been here a few weeks, while at other times, it feels as if I just passed my silver anniversary! Where is my commemorative watch?! During this past year, my time with NCNLA has been enjoyable, challenging, educational, rewarding and at times, mind-numbing but never boring. Without a doubt, my favorite part has been the people I’ve met along the way. Everyone has been incredibly welcoming and supportive, and I’m impressed by your dedication to the nursery and landscape industry. It’s a pleasure to help guide the association that advocates on your behalf. By the time you read this, we’ll be within 10 weeks of Green & Growin’ 20, and I have a few updates about the program and schedule. Thanks to the hard work of a small group of dedicated volunteers who participated in the Volunteer Leadership Summit (VLS) this past August in Winston-Salem, we are implementing several changes that I hope you find appealing.

General Education

This year’s schedule includes an exciting line-up of keynote speakers as noted below, plus a newly added educational lunch program on Tuesday and Wednesday. In addition to receiving lunch as a part of your registration fee, you gain another CEU. We’re also offering sessions on a wide variety of topics, including pest control, landscape lighting, marketing, customer experience, hardscape design and more.

Pesticide License: This 1 1/2-day class prepares you to sit for the pesticide applicator’s licensing exam offered by NCDA.

OSHA/NALP Construction Safety: Designed by NALP and approved by OSHA, this 1 1/2-day class provides managers and field personnel with in-depth information on the prevention of workplace hazards, workers’ rights, filing complaints and more.

Adult First Aid/AED/CPR Certification: This 4-hour class is designed to help office and field personnel recognize and properly address emergencies on the job.

IA Landscape Irrigation Technician: Designed by IA, this 8-hour class provides hands-on training on the installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.

ICPI Concrete Paver Installer: Designed by ICPI and sponsored by Belgard, this 2-day class provides training on the proper installation of interlocking concrete paving systems on residential and commercial projects.

ICPI PICP Specialist: Designed by ICPI and sponsored by Belgard, this 8-hour class is for experienced contractors who install interlocking concrete paving systems on residential and/or commercial projects and want to move into the permeable pavement market.

Fundamentals of Profitable Landscape Design: This 8-hour class provides concentrated, hands-on training in the fundamental skills of landscape design. Perfect for new-comers and experienced account managers, who want to impress their customers with jump-offthe-page design proposals.


Creating the Ultimate Landscape Design: This 8-hour class moves from the basics of design to a master plan that can help you attract and sell to the savvy client.

Marketplace

Several new events are planned for the trade show floor to enhance the experience for everyone.

Wednesday, January 29 A Kick-Off Reception will be held at the Coliseum from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. General Education attendees and others are invited to preview the trade show and network with their colleagues. Due to safety concerns, exhibitor move-in will close promptly at Noon on Wednesday. Your booth does not need to be completed, nor does it need to be staffed during the Kick-Off Reception; however, you may have an opportunity to meet new customers, so set up if you can!

Thursday, January 30 A Happy Hour will be held at the Coliseum from 4:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. Attendees and exhibitors are invited to socialize and make plans for the evening before leaving the Coliseum. As with the Wednesday Kick-Off Reception, you do not need to staff your booth during Happy Hour.

Thursday, January 30 & Friday, January 31 The trade show floor will include a 2200-SF Demonstration/ Outdoor Living Area. Twice on Thursday and again on Friday, hands-on demonstrations will be offered. Attendees are invited to take a short break from walking the show floor to participate in the demonstrations and earn CEUs.

Thursday, January 30 & Friday, January 31 Lunch will be provided in the Demonstration/ Outdoor Living Area. No need to scatter in search of food trucks or offsite restaurants. Stay engaged with your colleagues and customers on the trade show floor and enjoy lunch on us. I am excited about the improvements and new opportunities we are implementing for 2020, and I hope they will enhance your experience and provide even greater value. How did you get into the business?

Fortunately, I have always known what I wanted to do. I started in interior plants when I was 16, moved to nursery production in college, then to garden center work and finally to landscape design. Arbor started as a minority business subbing our work to LanArc and Tom Pruitt. Bill Wilder helped me get to North Carolina and then Tom gave me my start as a business owner.

What’s a typical day like for you and your staff?

As everyone in the business knows, there are no typical days! My general manager, Perry Jordan, and I do schedules for crews the day before and then we wait to see who shows up! We schedule work weeks before and then adjust based on the elements. Seriously, I may have several meetings after laying out jobs for crews, followed by choosing material for a project to be picked up later. There will be discussions concerning equipment purchases; employee concerns; and conversations with my secretary (who is my mother-in-law) about billing or baby presents or condolence cards. We have a dedicated group where our bottom line is service to clients, the community and each other. 8 | NURSERY & LANDSCAPE NOTES | FALL 2019

What has been the most rewarding part of your career?

Being able to work with family members and offer jobs to sons and daughters of clients and friends is a real treat. Associations with fellow VPI (now Virginia Tech) graduates like Bob Lyons and Mark Weathington, and relationships with my NCSU Family: Barb Fair, Lee Ivy, Bryce Lane, Mike Linker, and Ted Bilderback to name a few, are priceless. Arbor has won several awards for quality work and we were just named Best Landscaper in Chatham County, my home county. It is incredibly rewarding to be recognized for our hard work and dedication to quality. My father-in-law is a Vietnam veteran, so we worked with him and other vets to upgrade the local VFW Post in Pittsboro. Garvey Rain installed the irrigation and Nature Select maintains the turf — all free of charge. Giving back to the vets and the autism world like Camp Royal is unbelievably rewarding.

What is your company best known for? I have always said "if you can't get along with Arbor something is wrong." We make every effort to make the landscaping experience a fun one! Our


customer service is truly exceptional. And, of course the quality of our plants, thanks to our N.C. nursery friends, is superior. When you are passionate about your work, people want to be a part of that experience.

What issues are you concerned about as a company in the green industry?

Labor, labor and labor! After 30 years, we have started subcontracting some of our mowing, and that has helped. We have always subbed out electrical, lighting, guttering and power washing, doing all hardscaping in house, as well as irrigation (since 2015). And I do worry about ethics. It concerns me when I see 'employee stealing' and 'client poaching.' But you have to run your own race and I can only control Arbor's.

What have you gained from your involvement in the NCNLA?

I have formed friendships that would not have been possible if not for NCNLA. Being a

female in a male-dominated industry has never been a hindrance in part to those 'brothers from a different mother' relationships. I could not have asked for a better group of people to guide me through my career.

What advice do you have for someone interested in or just starting out in the industry?

I read Ruth Currins’ advice in the last issue, and mine is the same! Don't reinvent the wheel! Spend time talking to colleagues and listen. Value family and friends above all and always be fair and truthful in your dealings. We have a sign in our shop that says, "Don't surround yourself in mediocracy." When you get burned out — and you will — remember why you started in the first place. For me, I just focus on the plants and their beauty in design, and my world always comes back into focus.

2019 Robert Cagle Memorial Golf Tournament The 2019 Robert Cagle Memorial Golf Tournament was held Friday, August 23rd at the Lochmere Golf Club in Cary, N.C. Six foursomes enjoyed a round of golf followed by a casual dinner and awards ceremony. The net profit of this event funds the Robert Cagle Memorial Scholarship, which supports the continuing education needs of qualified horticultural and landscape students. MEMBER NEWS EDUCATION UPDATE NCNLA Members Attend University of Mount Olive AgFest Far Left: Landscape Design showed students how to plant trees and read landscape design plans. Left: Students were able to test their skills on a zero-turn mower course at the Bland Landscaping booth.

The University of Mount Olive Agriculture program hosted the sixth annual AgFest event on September 19, 2019. The event brought over 1500 high school FFA members and advisors from across North Carolina to campus to so they could see firsthand the various facets of agriculture. Representatives of the nursery and landscape industry were among

the 40 booths there to provide hands-on learning demonstrations for students, and opportunities to speak with professional about the careers within the green industry. Nursery and landscape businesses that participated in this year’s event included Bartlett Tree Experts, Bland Landscaping, Jericho Farms, Landscape Design, and NC Urban Forest Council. Later in the evening, students were invited to attend a concert featuring Matt Stell, the artist with the country music hit “Prayed for You.”

Horticulture Technology at Alamance Community College Celebrates 30 Years

The Horticulture Technology Department at Alamance Community College (ACC) celebrates their 30th anniversary this fall. The program began in the fall of 1989 under the direction of Chester Honeycutt to meet the large demand for development of a program in Alamance County. When Honeycutt retired, Justin Snyder began as the department head in 2003. Liz Riley has been the head of the department since 2017. The program has since grown from ten students to sixty students, and from one instructor to three faculty members. On campus, ACC has three different greenhouses: a production greenhouse, a hydroponic greenhouse, and a conservatory greenhouse. Three years ago, a generous donation of a 47-acre farm, named the Bill and Nancy Covington Education Center, was made to the program.

They are currently developing the farm, which has helped the program expand class offerings by providing more room for courses such as equipment operations/maintenance, landscape irrigation, and landscape construction. The horticulture faculty and staff are excited about the future of the green industry and look forward to continuing to prepare their students to be industry ready. They appreciate the local green industry for their continued support of their department for field trips, guest lectures, and other learning opportunities for students. MEMBER IN MEMORIAM NEWS Tom Gilmore of Julian, N.C. passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at the age of 82. After graduating from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture, Tom joined the family business at Gilmore Plant & Bulb. He later pursued his interest in politics and held a seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives for three consecutive terms. He then resigned to accept an appointment by Gov. James Hunt, Jr. as Deputy Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Human Resources. Tom later returned to the family business where he would become President. In subsequent years, he served as President of the North Carolina Association of Nurserymen (now North Carolina Nursery & Landscape Association), President of the National Landscape Association, President of Keep North Carolina Beautiful and as a member of the North Carolina State Board of Agriculture. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to JC Raulston Arboretum, 4415 Beryl Rd. Raleigh, NC 27606; Community in Christ Presbyterian Church, 5401 Liberty Rd. A Loyalty Program Can Boost Customer Retention and Your Bottom Line

L

oyalty programs are an effective way to increase revenue and encourage customers to keep coming back for your products and services. Retail chains, grocery stores, hotels, airlines and various other companies offer them because they want to keep your business — and it works. According to a 2013 Nielsen study, nearly 84% of customers are more likely to stay with a brand that offers a loyalty program. New Garden Landscaping & Nursery, Greensboro, has run a successful loyalty program for 15 years in their retail store. They use a point-of-sale (POS) system with rewards management features to sign up customers and track sales. Members of their program get a key card that’s scanned each time they make a purchase. “Every 300 points gets a $15 credit that can be applied to retail purchases. Points are earned on regular- priced purchases and excludes labor, delivery and landscape services,” said Jessica Story, Customer Marketing Manager for New Garden.

Rewards Programs Can Pay Off

Creating a rewards program can give you a great return on investment. Recent marketing research shows that it costs five times more to gain a new customer compared to keeping an existing one. At New Garden, 70% of purchases are by customers enrolled in their rewards program. Increasing customer retention by a mere five percent can increase your profits from 25%-95%. According to Story, New Garden rewards customers are spending more per transaction than non-rewards customers. Purchases from rewards customers make up 77% of overall sales.

New Garden customers in the rewards program receive a members-only newsletter with coupons, and invitations to special events and seminars. “Our rewards members also get a one-year warranty full replacement on their trees and shrubs, while non-members only get a six-month warranty,” said Story. If you attend trade shows, you can ask rewards customers to stop by your booth for a special giveaway to help your company stay top-of-mind among the other exhibitors.

Rewards Are Not Just for Retail

Wholesale and service companies can also use a rewards program to maintain customer loyalty throughout the year. Discounts can be offered to wholesale buyers through a tiered program of purchase levels to encourage them to spend more per visit. Service companies can offer regular clients a discount after a certain number of visits. A rewards program can also help you track customers so you can anticipate their needs. Wholesalers can offer a discount on purchases made at the end of the busy season to help boost sales and get rid of leftover inventory. Landscapers can offer incentives for projects that clients usually want completed in the spring and summer.

Don’t Forget Referrals

Referrals are a great way to secure new business and offer your customers a bonus for their recommendation. Small businesses can use these referrals to increase their customer base through word-of-mouth recommendations from current clients. Creating a referral program can be as simple as printing business-sized cards for current customers to pass on to potential new customers. You can offer a discount on a regular service or add a smaller service at no cost for every qualified referral that becomes a new customer. Loyalty programs can work across business types with a little creativity and an investment that works with your budget.

Roadmap of Research Priorities for the Green Industry

Highlights from a two-day stakeholder workshop held in Albuquerque, New Mexico

E

nvironmental horticulture, or the green industry, is an integral component of specialty crops and agriculture as a whole. In fact, our industry generates one third of all specialty crop revenue (over 19 billion each year!) and its workforce. Yet, our industry received only 12 percent of federal funds earmarked for specialty crops from USDA Agricultural Research Service and USDA’s Specialty Crop Research Initiative in the past five years. The Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) recognized this disparity and began a mission to bring federal funding awards more in line with environmental horticulture’s economic impact. HRI realized that the industry lacked a unified, strategic roadmap of research priorities to better leverage federal funds. With this new mandate, HRI set to work. The result was a professionally moderated, two-day stakeholder workshop, where attendees shared their collective understanding of current and future industry challenges, trends, and opportunities. Through this consensus effort, HRI identified research priorities to address challenges, capitalize on future

trends and opportunities, better direct research investments, and steer federal funds toward removing barriers to increasing sustainability. About 45 delegates representing all segments of environmental horticulture and regions of the country gathered for a face-to-face summit to listen, learn, and share their insights with each other. Participants were encouraged to advocate for their peers by first engaging in conversations with them in advance of the meeting to widen their perspectives. During the summit, the moderator led the group through a series of discussions that culminated in a consensus on four key research priorities.

and well-being and their ecosystems in which they live. New research regarding plant benefits need to be aligned with industry priorities to maintain environmental horticulture at the forefront of providing sustainable green solutions for the world.

Creating Innovative Solutions

Research that develops or adapts biological, mechanical, and technological systems make practices and processes more efficient and productive for horticultural businesses of all segments and sizes. Ultimately, this will introduce new plants into commerce, increase efficiencies, reduce labor, and improve sustainability. Our industry continually needs improved systems to produce new or improved crops with less labor, water, nutrients, time, and pesticides in a safe work environment while adding value to quality plants that thrive during shipping, marketing, and consumer use. Whether in the supply chain, current inventory, or on the road to end-users, crops and inputs need to be traced, evaluated, ordered, managed and/or improved upon to continually provide cost effective solutions for producers to integrate into existing production practices. This would include (but not be limited to) advances in plant breeding, crop production and protection, software, automation, mechanization, and logistics. Recognizing and addressing barriers to adoption will be crucial.

Gathering Consumer Insights

Research that evaluates consumer behavior, preferences, and trends empowers horticultural businesses to optimize products and services. Ultimately, this will lead to industry-wide profitability and growth. Consumers are responsible for the health and sustainability of our industry. Therefore, producers need to understand generational shifts in consumer demographics, as well as how those shifts affect consumer purchasing behaviors. Examples include emerging market preferences, relative purchasing power, and general gardening confidence. Markets, consumers, and the products they desire interact and change over time. 28 | NURSERY & LANDSCAPE NOTES | FALL 2019

To adapt, industry producers need information that synthesizes all this, yet is easily understandable and crafted for various segments of the industry. Research on consumer preference, motivation, purchasing behavior, and perception of our industry’s products and services will help producers develop better business strategies that fulfill consumer desires.

Producing Practical and Actionable Solutions

Research that addresses ongoing and emergent industry challenges in production, resource management, and pest and disease management, provides practical and actionable advice for horticultural businesses to improve sustainability and profitability. Disruptive, ongoing, emergent issues that challenge short-term profitability and success of environmental horticulture will continue to rise. Therefore, providing solutions to these challenges must remain a research priority for funding agencies. The AmericanHort Mission is to unite, promote, and advance our industry through advocacy, collaboration, connectivity, education, market development, and research. HRI, the research foundation of AmericanHort, supports scientific research and students for the advancement of the environmental horticulture industry. HRI was established by industry leaders on the premise that no one could better direct needed research to advance environmental horticulture than the very people who work in it. They adhere to that same vision today: to fund and guide environmental horticulture research efforts with direct input from industry professionals. It is the strong foundation upon which to build the industry. Since 1962, HRI has provided more than $7.5 million in funds to research projects covering a broad range of production, environmental, and business issues important to the green industry. Moving forward, HRI has adopted these four research priorities and will use them to guide future HRI funding and leveraging decisions.

Be on the Lookout for Purple Loosestrife and Floating Heart

M

any beautiful plants have been introduced to gardeners and landscapers through the ornamental industry. Most of these non-native plants stay right where they were planted and have no unintended consequences. However, there are always going to be a few bad players that escape cultivation and cause serious harm to the environment. Two plants that are of particular concern in North Carolina are Purple Loosestrife and Yellow Floating Heart.

Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) was introduced into N.C. as an ornamental plant in the early 1990s and has persisted in at least one location for more than 20 years despite yearly control efforts. This highly invasive perennial plant is a Federal Noxious Weed, and quite common in states to our north (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan), but is not yet widespread in N.C. This plant has beautiful purple/pink flowers and loves to grow in wet and swampy areas. It grows prolifically in wetland areas and will eventually out-compete the native swamp plants that provide valuable food and habitat for wildlife. Each plant can produce millions of seeds in a year, and one plant can have 30-50 seed heads if left untreated. The N.C. Department of Agriculture is actively managing three infestations of Purple Loosestrife in Guilford, Henderson, and Onslow Counties. In N.C., Purple Loosestrife has been found planted in commercial and residential landscapes. As a reminder, selling or transporting Purple Loosestrife or any other plants

The Floating Hearts are a more recent introduction into the N.C. water garden industry. Although there are several native Nymphoides, two species within the genus - Yellow (N. peltata) and Crested (N. cristata) Floating Heart pose the greatest threat to our state and are both Class A state Noxious Weeds. These ornamental aquatic plants have heart-shaped leaves the size of a golf ball, and either yellow or white flowers with 5-petals. The plants are rooted in soil, but the leaves and flowers float on the surface of the water. The plants have impressive reproductive capabilities;

producing seeds and ramets, while also creating new plants from leaf and stem cuttings (called fragmentation) as well as daughter plants formed along the stem. The plants were widely available in the water garden trade until the N.C. Department of Agriculture placed these plants on the state Noxious Weed List in 2011. Crested Floating Heart has been an extremely invasive plant in South Carolina, growing from a two-acre infestation in Lake Marion to over 2,000 acres in just two years! Only one location of Crested Floating Heart has been found in N.C. so far, and it is almost completely eradicated. Management of Yellow Floating Heart, however, proves to be more of a challenge. There are currently 15 separate known infestations in the state, ranging in location from Burke County in the Mountains, to Lee County in the Piedmont, to Craven County in the Coastal Plain. This plant is highly adaptable and will grow in a variety of temperature and water quality environments. It is thought that some of the infestations were planted intentionally by homeowners, and others may have been introduced by waterfowl. Keep your eyes peeled for this beautiful, but invasive plant! It started flowering in May and will continue flowering until frost in N.C., and the flowers are one of the easiest ways to spot this plant.
