nother Green & Growin’ is in the books! I’m glad we had great weather for most of the show, except for rain (and a few

minutes of snow!) on Friday. I hope that the exhibitors and attendees walked away with new prospects and ideas to help make their businesses successful. My time as NCNLA President came to a close during the Annual Meeting, where I passed the gavel to your new President, Hugh Crump. I served during some big changes at NCNLA, including hiring new Executive Vice President, Rick Lawhun, in September 2018 and assuming responsibility of the North Carolina Green Industry Council in October 2019. The board of directors worked together this past year to develop solutions that we felt would best benefit the organization, even when we had to make some tough decisions. Ultimately, these changes have strengthened NCNLA and

NCNLA EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

F

ebruary is quickly becoming my favorite time of year with NCNLA. The sun is starting to hang around a little longer. Temperatures are inching their way upward. Grass is changing from beige to green. Trees are beginning to bloom, and most importantly, after months of preparation, Green & Growin’ has come and gone. It’s a glorious time when I can close-out a few tasks and evaluate our performance before jumping on to the next project. In evaluating our performance, I am extremely pleased with this year’s show. Our numbers were up in every category and initial feedback has been extremely positive. Are there opportunities for improvement? Absolutely, there always are, but the desired improvements require minor tweaks as opposed to major overhauls. So, let’s take a quick look at a few highlights from G&G’ 20.

Richard Lawhun NCNLA Executive Vice President

If you attended any of the specialty classes, I hope you took the time to complete the online survey that was distributed in early February. If not, we would still like to hear from you. Feel free to email your comments or suggestion to info@ncnla.com or give us a call at 919.816.9119. We’d love to chat!

Showbook

For the first time, the G&G showbook included descriptions of every general education session, making it easier for you to decide which sessions you wanted to attend. In previous years, the showbook included only session titles with the descriptions posted on the G&G’ website, requiring you to go back-and-forth when evaluating the sessions. The showbook also included approved continuing education units (CEU). In previous years, the showbook listed all CEUs as pending. This past year, we started the approval process early and were able to list approved CEUs for most subject areas, including the landscape contractor license, irrigation contractor license, pesticide applicator license, certified arborist, municipal specialist, master arborist and more. I am extremely proud of the work NCNLA staff did in compiling this year’s showbook, and I hope you noticed these improvements.

Specialty Classes & Certifications

This year, we shook things up a bit in order to provide more variety than previous years. We kept a few old favorites – Pesticide License, Concrete Paver Installer and PICP Specialist; brought back a couple of earlier successes – Fundamentals of Landscape Design and Creating the Ultimate Landscape Design; and partnered with NALP and IA to offer three new courses – OSHA Construction Safety, Adult First Aid and Landscape Irrigation Technician. The results were outstanding. The eight specialty classes attracted a total of 299 attendees with three of the courses reaching capacity. In comparison, the specialty classes attracted 179 attendees in 2018 and 157 attendees in 2019. The 90% increase in participation compared to 2019 confirmed the need to revamp the offerings and provide some variety in order to meet the needs of the industry. If you attended any of the specialty classes, I hope you took the time to complete the online survey that was distributed in early February. If not, we would still like to hear from you. Feel free to email your comments or suggestion to info@ncnla.com or give us a call at 919.816.9119. We’d love to chat!

Marketplace

This year’s Marketplace included several new items/events intended to enhance the experience for attendees and exhibitors alike. Wednesday afternoon offered a Kick-Off Reception from 5-7 p.m. Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to preview the tradeshow and network with their colleagues. A Happy Hour was held on Thursday afternoon from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Attendees and exhibitors were able to socialize and make plans for the evening before leaving the tradeshow. The trade show floor included demonstrations by Site One Landscape Supply twice on Thursday and again on Friday, showcasing construction of an outdoor grill island. The demonstrations provided a CEU for the landscape contractors license. Based on initial feedback, the demonstrations were well received. We’ll be looking to provide three different demonstrations next year. Lunch was provided in the Demonstration/Outdoor Living Area on Thursday and Friday. This seemed to keep more people on the tradeshow floor where they could stay engaged with the exhibitors. All-in-all, it was a very successful show as the new items/events seemed to be well received. We’re excited about the enhancements and look forward to tweaking them for G&G’ 21, January 11-15 in Greensboro!

Five Minutes with Swift Creek Nursery

Swift Creek Nursery Clayton, NC Vice President Jamie Thomas In business 42 years NCNLA Member 39 years Number of employees 20 Services Wholesale Only Nursery Favorite NCNLA benefits Nursery & Landscape Notes, networking events, Green & Growin’ Marketplace

Pictured (left to right): Lanny, Helen, Christy and Jamie Thomas

How did you get into the business?

My dad, Lanny Thomas, graduated from NCSU in 1970. After graduating he became the Nursery Manger at Holt Lake Nursery in Smithfield. In 1976, he started propagating liriope and mondo grass on a one-acre piece of property behind his house. In December 1977, my dad left Holt Lake Nursery to go out on his own. In January 1978, Swift Creek Nursery officially opened, and I was born. In the early years, Dad did landscaping to help fund the nursery and my mom, Helen, wore many different hats. She was a salesgirl, an office manager and a field worker. It was not uncommon to find her outside on the weekends splitting liriope while I was in the playpen. So, I have literally grown up in the nursery! In our 42 years we have grown from one acre to 24 acres in production and from one employee to 19 full-time employees. Upon graduating from NC State in 2001, I began working at the nursery. In 2006, my wife, Christy, joined the family business, too. My children, Preston and Abby, have come to the office every day. We hope the family business will rub off on them and we can continue into the next generation.

Preston, son of Jamie and Christy Thomas

What’s a typical day like for you and your staff/family?

Dad and I check in with the office to collect all current and new orders for the day. Orders are distributed to the pulling crew to be ready for pickup that day. We pride ourselves on having the orders ready so that our customers do not have to wait. We meet with the foreman and crew to finalize the work schedule for the day, ensuring that we are all communicating and on the same page, then we organize the delivery schedule. We ensure that everyone is on task and that we are producing a high quality product. Running a nursery is challenging so you have to learn how to be a problem solver!

Abby, daughter of Jamie and Christy Thomas

Swift Creek Nursery staff

What has been the most rewarding part of your career?

Working in the nursery will teach you to be a horticulturist, a mechanic, an accountant, a weatherman, and sometimes a psychiatrist! We are proud to provide high-quality plants, and new and different varieties to our customers. I also enjoy developing friendships in the industry and being able to learn from and share ideas with each other. Working in the nursery allows you to do multiple things outside while enjoying Mother Nature. It is also rewarding to be able to work with family.

What is your company best known for?

We are known for carrying a diverse selection of quality container stock. We consistently offer new varieties of plants as well as cold hardy palms. We are also known for our customer service. It is our goal to have orders pulled and ready to be loaded so our customers don’t have to wait. Time is money and we realize our customers are looking for fast service as well as quality material.

What issues are you concerned about as a company in the green industry?

The availability of labor concerns us. We have been blessed to have employees who have worked with us for over 20 years. We

have also been blessed to be able to hire new employees with many years of experience. We are also concerned about the proliferation of patented and trademarked plants, and their effect on the nursery industry. In our area, we are concerned about increasing land value and residential growth encroaching into agricultural areas.

What have you gained from your involvement in the NCNLA? I have gained a greater understanding of plant diversity, growing techniques and innovation in the industry. It has provided us with the ability to network with our peers and further develop our craft by sharing knowledge.

What advice do you have for someone interested in or just starting out in the industry? Anyone who is considering this industry should get a job or internship in the industry in order to figure out where they best fit. A niche right now in the market is grafting of plant material from Japanese Maples. When designing the layout of a new facility, business owners should allow for some mechanization or automation to improve efficiency.

NCNLA members submitted the step-by-step guides and videos, ranging from how to create a hanging basket to how to plant a tree. Each project is printable and mobile-friendly so consumers can bring it into a local garden center to shop for the materials they need. If they have a project they cannot tackle themselves, a directory of member Certified Plant Professionals (CPPs) is available as a resource. The original website launch brought thousands of visitors to the website through digital advertising and social media promotion. In 2020, the website was refreshed with new greenprints and an updated list of resources. A digital advertising and social media campaign are underway to drive traffic to the site just in time for spring outdoor projects. In March, NC Greenprints will be featured on My Carolina on CBS17, reaching over 20,000 television viewers in the Triangle and an audience of over 1.2 million online. NCNLA members Brad and Heather Rollins of Fairview Garden Center were featured as representatives of NC Greenprints. NC Greenprints was developed with the support of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services-Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.

NCGreenPrints.com NCNLA’s consumer website is an update to TarheelGardening.com. It’s purpose is to engage both “next generation” young consumers and traditional audiences by connecting the quality of life, economic and environmental benefits that come from a well designed/maintained landscape using NC nursery crops. In addition to increasing the perceived value of NC trees and landscape plants, the site emphasizes the importance of hiring certified professionals and promotes green industry businesses across North Carolina. NC GreenPrints.com is designed to provide next generation consumers with a clear, straightforward and easy way to learn more about NC nursery crops — and to connect with NCNLA’s community of members as the people who can provide those products and services. It offers all the knowledge, tools and product information consumers need on an accessible digital platform.

EDUCATION

G

reen & Growin' was the place to be for 1,400 industry professionals who earned credits toward state or national accreditations and gained career-boosting skills during the three-day education conference.

Wednesday’s keynote, Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery and Juniper Level Botanical Garden, shared stories and photos from his lifelong work in plant exploration and conservation.

This year’s event included 60 classes across eight tracks, and eight specialty and certification courses. Popular general session topics included Opportunities for Women in the Green Industry; Advanced Disease Management Strategies for Cool and Warm Season Turf; Small Space Landscapes; The Importance of Mosquito Control for Public Health; and The Ownership Transition Challenge.

Newly added benefits included lunch and a guest speaker during Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s general sessions. On Tuesday, Kerry Scott of másLabor, explained their services for businesses participating in the federal H-2A and H-2B non-immigrant visa programs. Wednesday’s lunch speaker was Kathie Dello, Ph.D., the new North Carolina State Climatologist, who spoke about the challenges climate change can have on the green industry.

Several new specialty tracks sold out this year, including the OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Course and Adult First Aid/ CPR/AED Certification Course, both offered in partnership with the National Association of Landscape Professionals. Two dynamic educators, Richard Ludwig and Bill Slack, presented unique hands-on courses about landscape design that that are always popular with attendees. Our Tuesday keynote was North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler. He gave us an update on the state of the industry, and we recognized him with a Friend of the Industry award for this effort in securing relief funds for nursery owners impacted by Hurricanes Florence and/or Michael.

reen industry professionals gathered for the Marketplace Thursday and Friday at the Greensboro Coliseum to visit over 390 exhibitors on a sold-out show floor. A robust mix of new and former exhibitors came from across the U.S. and Canada to showcase their products, equipment, plant materials and services. Education extended to the trade show floor with a new plant session hosted by JC Raulston Arboretum and a demonstration of an island grill installation by Site One Landscape Supply. Both events offered an opportunity for registered education attendees to gain an extra CEU.

Site One Landscape Supply demonstration

This year offered new opportunities to network, including a kickoff reception Wednesday evening before the official show opening, and a happy hour Thursday evening. Extended hours gave exhibitors more time to meet new customers and catch up with old friends. Complimentary lunch and breaks were offered on the trade show floor to encourage attendees to spend the whole day at Marketplace so they could spend more time engaging with exhibitors. With new events, amenities and extended hours, the Marketplace at Green & Growin’ 20 was one of the largest and most well-received to date.

INDUSTRY RESEARCH

The Cultivar Solution: Taming Invasive Species with Plant Breeding Lo & Behold Pink Micro Chip buddleia

I

t is welcome news that people now recognize the threat of invasive, exotic species that can displace native species and alter our native ecosystems. Gardeners, nurserymen, landscape architects and other land stewards should all see the need to act responsibly to preserve our native ecosystems. No one wants to be responsible for the next purple loosestrife, kudzu, or multiflora rose, all well-known examples of problematic, invasive species. We can all see that the proverbial Pandora’s box has been opened and now the question is, how do we close it? State and local lawmakers are attempting to solve the problem with legislation that bans the sale of invasive species. Most of us can agree to give up kudzu and garlic mustard, but should gardeners and landscapers be forced to forgo some of our best performing ornamental plants? The question might be irrelevant if we better understood that weedy, seedy species can be tamed with plant breeding. Plant scientists, horticulturists, farmers and gardeners have been selecting and breeding cultivars since the dawn of agriculture. Historically, cultivars have

been developed to produce greater crop yields or larger, more colorful flowers. These same techniques can and have been used to produce well behaved, environmentally friendly plants that are not invasive threats like their parents. There are essentially five methods of taming an invasive species; flower doubling, male clones, wide crosses, triploids, and mutation breeding using chemicals or irradiation. One of the oldest methods for taming a weedy species is to create fully double flowers, where the reproductive organs (stamen and pistil) are turned into petals. Double flowered cherry trees (Prunus sp.) are an excellent example. Have you ever seen fruit on Kwanzan cherry tree? Doubled flowers typically first occur as chance mutation and are then exploited by plant breeders to increase the petal count by transforming all the stamen and pistil. Typically, the more petals you have the greater the degree of sterility. Rose of Sharon, Hibiscus syriacus is a good example of a weedy garden plant that was tamed by means of doubled flowers. There are a number of fully double flowered cultivars in a range of colors and none of them set much, if any, seed.

Relative fertility = seedlings/flower of that cultivar divided by seedlings/flower for the highest cultivar measured that year x 100. Means followed by the same letter, within a column, for a given year, are not significantly different, P<0.05, based on a Waller-Duncan ANOVA means separation. z

To evaluate female fertility, plants were arranged outdoors in a complete y randomized design prior to flowering in Mills River, NC. Study plants were intermixed with 40 additional Berberis taxa to ensure for optimal cross pollination conditions utilizing natural pollinators. Individual branches were marked and the number of individual flowers on each branch was record. Fruit were collected when mature . Seeds were extracted, counted, sowed, and stratified for 90 days at 43° F. Pots with stratified seeds were then moved to a greenhouse maintained at approximately 70° F for 90 days and the number of seed lings were counted for each replicate.

Gardeners, like environmentalists, are proud of our natural heritage and want to preserve native habitats.

Selling and planting cloned male plants is another very simple way to eliminate seed and thus invasiveness. Male plants produce no fruit or seed and are rarely invasive. Unfortunately, this method is limited to plant species that are dioecious, having male and female flowers on separate plants. There are a number of plant species we could tame using this method, including Amur cork tree (Phellodendron,) bittersweet (Celastrus), mulberry (Morus), poplar (Populus) and willow (Salix). Creating a mule, or making a wide cross between two distantly related species can solve invasiveness. Mules rarely produce offspring. The key with this method is finding parents with the proper amount of genetic distance. If they are too closely related the offspring can be fertile. If they are too distantly related, it’s impossible to make a successful cross. Dr. Tom Ranney at North Carolina State University has used this technique on several potentially invasive species. He developed Sunjoy Todo® Berberis x ‘NCBX1’ (see Table 1) and Golden Ticket® Ligustrum x ‘NCLX1’ using the wide cross technique to reduce fertility. Dr. Dennis Werner, also from North Carolina State University, developed the Lo & Behold® Buddleia series utilizing wide crosses. One of the more useful methods for taming an invasive species is to create a triploid (3x) plant, which is one that has three sets of chromosomes instead of the normal two, called a diploid (2x). This was the technique used to create the seedless watermelon. The process

32 | NURSERY & LANDSCAPE NOTES | WINTER 2020

starts by treating young seedlings with colchicine or oryzalin which doubles the chromosomes, creating a tetraploid (4x) plant. The tetraploid plant is then crossed back with a normal diploid plant. The resulting triploid seedlings are often rendered sterile or nearly sterile. Double Play Doozie® Spiraea japonica ‘NCSZ2’ is a seedless triploid as well as a wide cross. One of the potential added benefit sterility is that the plant puts its energy into flowering instead of setting seed. With Double Play Doozie® Spiraea the results are flowers all summer long. Seedless plant mutations can also be induced by using chemicals or radiation. For example, seedless oranges, grapefruit, lemons and other citrus fruit have been created by using gamma radiation. Dr. Ranney used irradiation to develop the seedless Sunjoy Todo® Berberis x ‘NCBX1’. All of the aforementioned techniques have been used to create seedless ornamental plants that were otherwise considered weedy or invasive. We now have seedless ash, barberry, bittersweet, buckthorn, butterfly bush, mulberry, privet and rose of Sharon, and plant breeders are working on Amur maple, Bradford pear, Norway maple, as well as other useful, but invasive species. Promoting an exclusively native plant agenda underestimates species that are not indigenous. Gardeners, like environmentalists, are proud of our natural heritage and want to preserve native habitats. They want to do what is morally right, but they also

want to create beautiful gardens in our manmade habitats. Cities and suburbs present challenging growing environments and exotic plants often perform better than native plants. Contrary to popular dogma, native plants are not more adaptable than exotic species, and they are not more resistant to insect and disease attacks. Quite the contrary, exotic species are often used by plant breeders to create new, pest resistant cultivars that reduce the use of pesticides. The cultivar solution is the answer to the complex problem of invasive species. We need to embrace and promote safe, seedless cultivars regardless if the species has been banned in our state or market. The

time to act is before a plant species is banned. Legislation by state governments that restrict the sale of invasive plant species should include a means for exempting non-invasive cultivars regardless of species. As the green industry, we need to lead and show others that we are serious about the environment.
