W

elcome to the fifth annual Arizona Conscious Living Resource Guide, brought to you by Natural Awakenings magazine. When publishers Holly Baker and Eric Sells of the Tucson and Phoenix editions, respectively, approached me about writing the guest introduction, I was thrilled at the prospect of addressing the large, enlightened community of healthy and green consumers in the Copper State. You will discover in these pages a strong Shawn Achor network of practitioners and organizations who are committed to helping you succeed on your chosen path.

incorporating positive habits, participating in meaningful experiences, training our brains to be present and traveling to expand our mental horizons, we can literally trump our genes and even 80 years of practicing negativity or stress. That is the revolution: you do not have to be just your genes and your environment. This Guide offers ways in which you can consciously craft the trajectory your life takes over the next year.

We are living through twin revolutions. We all know about the technological one, bringing us smartphones and constant accessibility, which sometimes can hinder our ability to be present. The other revolution is hidden, but more powerful. Based on research coming out of positive psychology and neuroscience, we are learning information that literally changes what it means to be human.

In fact, all of my research in The Happiness Advantage comes down to these three conclusions: if we are conscious about our mindset and habits, happiness is a choice, happiness is an advantage and happiness spreads. Thank you for leading that revolution. My sincere appreciation goes to Natural Awakenings magazine for helping spread the natural living philosophy to greater numbers of individuals to help improve our Arizona community—and our world.

Up until recently, we have been taught that we are a combination of our genes and our environment. Most people you know believe this today. But I am consistently getting research that validates what spiritual leaders have been saying for centuries: there is a third path. If you’ve seen my TED talk on happiness, you know that only 10 percent of our long-term happiness is based upon the external world. Ninety percent of our happiness is how our brains process the world. By

The average person does not fight their genes, so our research keeps confirming that genes are incredibly important. But if you’re reading this, you’re not average—you’re seeking ways to be a better person this year than last year. There’s no point in waiting! So often, people postpone happiness until some success or milestone in the future. But when the brain is positive in the present, every educational and business outcome improves significantly, as do many of our health outcomes. Happiness fuels more positive change.

Gratefully, Shawn Achor Positive psychology researcher and New York Times bestselling author of The Happiness Advantage. For more information, visit GoodThinkInc.com. Follow @shawnachor on Twitter and Facebook for positive updates.

Cancer Treatment Using Vitamin C by Dr. Jonathan Psenka

V

itamin C enjoys an almost celebrity status in the vitamin world. Very few vitamins reach the height of its popularity and while nearly all other vitamins have ongoing debates regarding either their safety or usefulness, vitamin C’s health benefits are largely undisputed. The healthy benefits of this vitamin range from fighting the common cold to helping speed trauma recovery by

Vitamin C has another important ability, which is its action in damaging and destroying cancer cells strengthening connective tissues. Vitamin C can also stabilize mast cells and prevent allergy symptoms. It was the vitamin C in limes that helped the British Navy prevent scurvy while crossing the Atlantic, and thus earned them the nickname of “limey”. Vitamin C has another important ability, which is its action in damaging and destroying cancer cells. This action of vitamin C is due to the fact that it is absorbed into our cells by the same receptors that absorb sugar. This is an important piece of physiological trivia, because cancer cells have a large metabolic need for sugar. The most basic definition of cancer is “uncontrolled cellular division,” which means that cancer cells continuously make new cancer cells, despite the body’s attempts to stop this abnormal process. This increased cancer cell reproduction requires increased energy, and one of the ways in which cancer cells produce energy is by absorbing and metabolizing more sugar. Cancer cells require so much energy that they can actually increase the number of sugar receptors on their surface in order to out-compete normal cells for any available sugar. When a person receives a large dose of intravenous vitamin C, the sugar receptors on cancer cells start pumping the vitamin C into cancer cells, having mistaken it for sugar. Once that vitamin C is inside the cancer cell, a series of chemical reactions occur which ultimately produce a large quantity of electron-stealing free radicals inside the cancer cells. With all of these damaging free radicals being generated inside the cancer cell, the cell’s defense systems become overwhelmed and fatal damage is inflicted. It’s interesting to note that this sort of free radicalmediated damage is also how many conventional cancer treatments

coverartist

work, with one big exception. Vitamin C does not adversely affect normal cells. In fact, high-dose intravenous vitamin C IVs are nearly free of adverse treatment-related side effects. While some of the vitamin C will surely end up inside of normal cells, it is broken down into substances like oxygen and water. Higher doses of IV vitamin C can cause a headache in dehydrated people, and some may experience lowered blood sugar when receiving vitamin C IVs. Both the potential headaches and the hypoglycemia can easily be avoided by taking the proper steps. Additionally, on a systemic level, vitamin C improves the functioning of the immune system, promotes increased connective tissue strength and has been shown to improve quality of life and longevity in people fighting cancer. Although high dose vitamin C IVs are both safe and effective, they are rarely recommended outside of the naturopathic medical office due to concerns regarding compatibility with conventional treatments. Over the past 15 years this concern has been addressed by much research showing that the addition of vitamin C may actually improve the effectiveness of conventional treatments, and rarely causes any adverse effect. Our current track record in fighting cancer is not so good that we can afford to overlook a non-toxic, cancer selective treatment proven to improve the quality of life in people fighting cancer. Dr. Jonathan Psenka has been helping people fight cancer at Longevity Medical Health Center since 2002. For more information, call 602-428-6151 or visit LongevityMedical.com. See ad on back cover. Serendipity Robin Mead Robin Mead sees her whimsical, colorful art as an “expression of joy,” translated onto paper, canvas and the digital screen. “My creations are highly stylized and working with subjects like birds and flowers gives me artistic freedom. I can go wherever I want with them and still have them seem believable,” she says. Mead loves to spend time in nature looking for inspiration, but always carries a bag of art supplies, ready to create wherever she goes. Serendipity was completed in the waiting room of a health practitioner’s office. Mead’s work spans media and subject matter from acrylic and mixed media paintings of birds and flowers to watercolor landscapes and gardens. She also likes to hand-make multicolored crocheted afghans and art journals as joyful creations for everyday use. Mead was a full-time social worker before attending art school on Long Island, New York, which turned her lifelong passion into a career. Her work can be found in homes around the world, as well as in album covers, books and art tutorials. Mead and her husband recently relocated from New York to a small farm in Elberton, Georgia, where the family will raise cows, chickens, vegetables, bees and flowers. Acupressure: Based on the same system as acupuncture, but fingers and hands are used, instead of stimulation with needles, in order to restore the balanced flow of the body’s life energy (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”). This force moves through the body along 12 energy pathways, or meridians, which practitioners unblock and strengthen. Common styles of acupressure include Jin Shin, which gently holds at least two points at once for a minute or more, and Shiatsu, which applies firm pressure to each point for three to five seconds.

Acupuncture: An ancient Oriental technique that stimulates the body’s ability to sustain and balance itself, based on the theory that an electromagnetic life-force (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”) is channeled in a continuous flow throughout the body via a network of ‘meridians.’ Disease is understood as an imbalance in the meridian system. Diagnosis of an imbalance is made by “reading” the pulse, face, tongue and body energy. To correct it, a practitioner inserts acupuncture needles at specific points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the flow of life-force. Acupuncture principles include the yin and yang polarities and the associations of the five elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood with bodily organs.

Alexander Technique: A system of re-educating the body and mind to support and facilitate proper posture and ease of movement. Through gentle manual guidance, accompanied by verbal directions, the Alexander teacher coaches the student to become aware of unnecessary tension and to unlearn longstanding patterns of movement. The Alexander Technique is an established method for helping to improve chronic conditions such as back, shoulder or neck pain, nervous tension, poor coordination, breathing problems and vocal strain. It is frequently used by athletes and performing artists to improve performance level. Aromatherapy: An ancient healing art that uses the essential oils of herbs and flowers to treat emotional disorders such as stress and anxiety and a wide range of other ailments. Oils are massaged into the skin, inhaled or added to a water bath. Often used in conjunction with massage therapy, acupuncture, reflexology, herbology and chiropractic or other holistic treatments. Art Therapy: Uses the creative process of making art to improve and enhance physical, mental and emotional wellbeing and to deepen self-awareness. The therapist makes a diagnosis and determines treatment plans by encouraging a client to express his or her feelings and unconscious thoughts through the nonverbal creative process and by observing the forms and content created. Astrology: A system of traditions and beliefs that holds that the relative positions of celestial bodies either directly influence life on Earth or correspond to events experienced on a human scale. Modern astrologers define astrology as a symbolic language, art form and type of divination that can provide information about personality and human affairs, aid in the interpretation of past and present events, and predict the future.

Find Your Path And Destiny with Mystic Messengers

M

ystic Messengers, founded by Patricia Kirkman, is Tucson’s premier metaphysical community of independent readers, healers, artists and craftsmen. Mystic Messengers fairs are held on the first Sunday of each month at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton in Tucson, where a group of complementary artists and craftsmen offer products, gifts and services that promote spiritual harmony and health. Those attending a Mystic Messengers metaphysical event will find a variety of disciplines and styles. Some of the associates are intuitives, like palm readers, astrologers, numerologists and tarot readers, while others are energy workers that use Reiki, Therapeutic Touch and other methods to promote healing. Patrons can feel comfortable because as a cooperative, the associates are not employed by anyone but their clients, which allows them to provide services at a reasonable cost, without an admission fee. Everyone associated with Mystic Messengers is interviewed, referenced and validated before being invited to join. Truth, respect and integrity form the foundation from which members of the cooperative serve their clients.

Ayurveda: The oldest medical system known to man and a comprehensive spiritual teaching practiced in India for 4,000 years. It focuses on achieving and maintaining perfect health via the balance of the elements air, fire and water (illness is considered an excess of any element). A patient’s body type, determined according to ayurvedic principles, is the basis for individualized dietary regimens and other preventive therapeutic interventions. Ayurvedic prescriptions might include purification procedures for the restoration of biological rhythms; experience of expanded consciousness through meditation; nutritional counseling; stress reduction; enhancing neuromuscular conditions; and behavioral modification.

Location: 445 S. Alvernon Way, Tucson. For more information and a newsletter, call Mystic Messengers at 520-742-9905 or visit MysticMessengers.com and Facebook.

Bee venom therapy (BVT): The therapeutic application of honeybee venom, through live bee stings, to bring relief and healing for various spinal, neural, joint or musculoskeletal ailments. Bioenergetics: A psychotherapy that works through the body to engage the emotions. Performing specified postures and exercises causes the release of layers of chronic muscular tension and defensiveness, termed “body armor.” The unlocking of feelings creates the opportunity for understanding and integrating them.

The absolute purest organic mattress.

Dr. Lewis Lives by the Golden Rule

D

avid G. Lewis, DDS, is a Phoenix native who graduated from Arizona State University and from the UCLA School of Dentistry, in 1979. He has been practicing in Tempe since 1981 and moved his practice, Welcome Home Dental, to the totally remodeled current office at Plaza 400 in 2010. Lewis has found that the most satisfying way to practice is to directly perform every service for all the patients he treats. This allows careful attention to the quality of services performed, as well as consistent scheduling and a relaxed office environment. Lewis offers a health-conscious approach, Dr. David G. Lewis using the most biocompatible materials available to best restore form, function and natural appearance to teeth. “Dr. Dave takes pride in following the Golden Rule of Dentistry, taking careful consideration of the needs of every patient as an individual.

Biofeedback: A relaxation technique that monitors internal body states and is used especially for stress-related conditions such as asthma, migraines, insomnia and high blood pressure. During biofeedback, patients monitor minute metabolic changes (e.g., temperature, heart rate and muscle tension), with the aid of sensitive machines. By consciously thinking, visualizing, moving, relaxing, etc., they learn which activities produce desirable changes in the internal processes being monitored.

Welcome Home Dental is located at 408 E. Southern Ave., in Tempe. For more information, e-mail DrDave@WelcomeHomeDental.net, call 480-967-4204, or visit WelcomeHomeDental.net. See ad on page 35.

Bio-Touch: Is a simple, hands-on healing technique that can be used to address all types of health concerns. A practitioner uses the first two fingers of each hand to lightly touch specific points on the body. Over time, the combination of correct points and light touch seems to enhance the body’s natural healing ability. Bio-Touch is easy to learn, is a complement to any healthcare program, has no levels of ability, authority or hierarchy and requires no special preparation, state of mind, religious belief, philosophy, or talent in order to achieve the desired results.

BodyTalk: Developed by chiropractor/ acupuncturist Dr. John Veltheim, BodyTalk is based upon bio-energetic psychology, dynamic systems theory, Chinese medicine and applied kinesiology. By integrating a series of tapping, breathing and focusing techniques, BodyTalk helps the body synchronize and balance its systems and strengthens the body’s innate knowledge of self-repair. BodyTalk is used to address a range of health challenges, including fibromyalgia, infections, parasites, chronic fatigue, allergies, addictions and cellular damage. Practitioners are usually licensed massage therapists (LMT) or bodyworkers. Bodywork: Massage and the physical practices of yoga are perhaps the bestknown types of bodywork; both have proven successful in relieving tension and stress, promoting blood flow, loosening stiff muscles and stimulating the organs. Massage therapies encompass countless techniques, including Swedish massage, shiatsu and Rolfing. The same is true for yoga. Other types of bodywork include martial arts practices like aikido, ki aikido and Tai chi chuan. Some others are the Alexander technique, Aston patterning, Bowen, Breema bodywork, Feldenkrais method, Hellerwork, polarity therapy, Rosen method, Rubenfeld synergy and Trager. Finding bodywork that improves mental and physical health is a highly individual process. Several types may be combined for the greatest benefit.

Chelation therapy: A safe, painless, nonsurgical medical procedure that improves metabolic and circulatory function by removing undesirable heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and copper from the body. A series of intravenous injections of the synthetic amino acid EDTA are administered, usually in an osteopathic or medical doctor’s office. The EDTA blocks excess free radical production, protecting tissues and organs from further damage. Over time, injections may halt the progress of the underlying condition that triggers the development of various degenerative conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, and cancer. More recently, chelation therapy also has been used to reverse symptoms of atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) by removing obstructive plaque built up in the circulatory system.

Chinese Medicine: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the world’s oldest and most complete systems of holistic health care. It combines the use of medicinal herbs, acupuncture, food therapy, massage and therapeutic exercise, along with the recognition that wellness in mind, body and emotions depends on the harmonious flow of life-force energy (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”).

r. G. Mason Garcia is a Tucson-native cardiologist that has been practicing for more than 20 years providing patient-centered services to the Tucson community, and opened Sunrise Cardiology, PLC, in July. He is board certified in both internal medicine and cardiovascular medicine and understands that patients may have other ailments he can address and prevent additional doctor visits and out-of-pocket costs. As the only direct-pay cardiologist in southern Arizona, Garcia is able to spend more time with patients and is also accessible via phone and email, with most visits availDr. G. Mason Garcia able the same day. Garcia states, “We are not affiliated with any health plans, and we like to keep the insurance companies out of the exam room. This allows us to offer our patients quality, effective care without the hassles and red tape required by health plans, like referrals, prior authorizations, lengthy waits for office visits or test results. We even do the EKGs and treadmill testing right in our office, so results are instant, not next week. We contract out for ECHOs with another physician and patients are seen same day or within 48 hours for their ECHO with results faxed to us immediately.” Garcia says, “It makes financial sense to invest in your cardiac health and to choose a physician who will truly take the time to get to know you and your individual health concerns in depth.” Sunrise Cardiology, PLC, is located at 2380 N. Ferguson Ave., Ste. 100, in Tucson. For more information, call 520-207-0962 or visit Sunrise-Cardiology.com. See ad on page 19.

Chiropractic: Based on the premise that proper structural alignment permits free flow of nerve activity in the body. When spinal vertebrae are out of alignment, they put pressure on the spinal cord and the nerves radiating from it, potentially leading to diminished function and illness. Misalignment can be caused by physical trauma, poor posture and stress. The chiropractor seeks to analyze and correct these misalignments through spinal manipulation or adjustment. Green Organics Pest Control Likes to Sleep at Night

P

est control is a fact of life, and the more you know about how and where to use the products really makes them more effective. Green Organics Pest Control takes the necessary time to achieve optimal results and provide the highest quality of service. Residential service is provided on an every-other-month basis, because the products last longer and there is no need to reapply them more frequently. Insects are nocturnal and people work in the daytime, so Green Organics Pest Control depends on customer feedback to do a great job. They value their customers and desire good communication to perform outstanding services every time, always with the guarantee that if there are problems between services, they will always be there to assist correcting them. Green Organics Pest Control utilizes repellent plant life and natural minerals and oils that pests do not like. They choose organic products because too often they hear stories, studies or trends about cancers, birth defects, disorders or diseases that can be attributed to pesticides to which no one should have to be subjected. Plus, they like to feel good at the end of the day and not like they need to be scrubbed down and cleansed of poisons. For more information, call 602-448-1180 or visit GreenOrganicsPest.com. She states, “Opening of energy pathways enhances immunity and heals illness and injury in the physical body, while balance on the energetic level increases the ability to follow your path in this life with love and gentle Judy Ferrig lessons. I’ve studied a wide variety of energy healing methods over the years, including dowsing, alien influences in Sedona, crystals, sound, color, meditation, journeying, past lives, belief systems, akashic records, chakras, auras and acupressure points. It was my horse and some unusual behaviors, however, which led me into both animal communication and Reiki healing, and what has been an incredibly rich and powerful journey.” Ferrig offers Reiki circles, training and workshops. She says that medical studies show statistically significant results from Reiki in healing physically and emotionally, and improved benefits from medication and pain reduction. “Did you know that while doing Reiki the practitioner brain waves lower to an altered state of consciousness?” says Ferrig. “The energy frequency of Reiki falls in the same range as that recently approved by the FDA for use in healing. Colon therapy: An internal bath that washes away old toxic waste accumulated along the walls of the colon. It is administered with pressurized water by a professional using special equipment. One colonic irrigation is the equivalent of approximately four to six enemas and cleans out matter that collects in the pockets and kinks of the colon. The treatment is used as both a corrective process and for prevention of disease. Colonics are used for ailments such as constipation, psoriasis, acne, allergies, headaches and the common cold.

Color therapy and colorpuncture: Color therapists believe that the vibrations of color waves can directly affect body cells and organs. Thus, different hues can treat illnesses and improve physical, emotional and spiritual health. Many practitioners also claim that the body emits an ‘aura,’ or energy field, with colors reflecting a person’s state of health. Color therapists apply colored lights or apply color mentally, through suggestion, to restore the body’s physical and psychic health. Colorpuncture combines the insights of light physics with the knowledge of the meridian points emphasized in Chinese acupuncture. The noninvasive technique is used to clear blockages in the meridians and restore healthy energy flow. Kirlian photographs track improvements. Another related sensory healing technique is light therapy, which attempts to restore well-being and can be successful in treating the depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Happiness Fuels

Performance

Don’t equate future success with happiness. Empirically, we know success does not lead to happiness. Step one is to stop thinking that finding a job or getting a promotion is the only thing that can bring us happiness. Achieving success does not always translate to happiness, either, as any celebrity magazine will attest. Neither is happiness a work ethic. Happiness is not a mystery. We have to train our brain to be positive, just like we work out our body. We not only need to work happy, we need to work at being happy. Try this exercise and see what happens. 1. Write down three new things you are grateful for each day into a journal. Research shows this will significantly improve your optimism even six months later, and raises your success rates significantly. 2. Write for two minutes a day describing one positive experience you had over the past 24 hours. This is a strategy to help transform you from a task-based thinker to a meaningbased thinker that scans the world for meaning instead of endless to-dos. This dramatically increases work happiness.

3. Exercise for 10 minutes a day. This trains your brain to believe that your behavior matters, which causes a cascade of success throughout the rest of the day.

by Shawn Achor

I

t is interesting to ponder which comes first, happiness or success. We might say to ourselves, “I’ll be happy when I find a job,” “I’ll be happy when I get a promotion,” or “I’ll be happy when my dissertation is finished.” The formula is clear: work harder, then be successful, and then be happier. But it’s hard to find happiness after success if the goalposts of success keep changing. Our society’s formula for success and happiness is broken. Based on the findings in the book, The Happiness Advantage, if we reverse the order of the formula, we end up with greater happiness and greater success rates. Happiness is an advantage, and the precursor to greater success. Every single relationship, business and educational outcome improves when the brain is positive first. If we cultivate happiness while in the midst of our struggles, work, at school, while unemployed or single, we increase our chances of attaining all the goals we are pursuing— including happiness. 32

Natural Awakenings

Achor at Operation Smile

4. Meditate for two minutes, focusing on your breath going in and out. This will help undo the negative effects of multitasking. Research shows you get multiple tasks done faster if you do them one at a time. It also decreases stress and raises happiness. 5. Write one, quick email first thing in the morning thanking or praising a member on your team. This significantly increases your feeling of social support. If we reverse the formula, we can turn happiness into a success advantage, raising every business and educational outcome. Start by doing one of these habits and once and for all, stop saying, “I’ll be happy when...” That formula is broken; but there is a better one: “Happiness leads to greater success.” Shawn Achor is a positive psychology researcher and author of The Happiness Advantage. Signs Are Everywhere

Seeing the Signs that Point to Success by Merry Lucero

W

hen you wake up in the morning to a clear, blue, cloudless sky as far as you can see, it’s a pretty good sign you will step out into a bright, sunny day. Traveling down the road, the signs we read and obey are second nature; green for go, red for stop, no parking, walk/don’t walk and so on. Imagine if we could tune in to the less obvious signs that are all around

36

Natural Awakenings

us day and night. Have you ever had a strong feeling or inner voice that something was going to happen, or noticed a repeating pattern, had a dream or a vision in meditation that you were sure had meaning, or seen an animal, bird or insect and sensed a deeper significance? Many traditions believe spirit guides are always present, offering us messages and directions.

NaturalAZ.com

Signs of transformation include fire and butterflies; a circle is a universal symbol of unity or wholeness, doves and rainbows are recognized for peace and forgiveness. While commonly established signs are interesting, every person has their own personal and unique signs that communicate a message to only them. This is known as intuition. Many students at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA) say they were intuitively drawn to enroll in transformational programs such as massage therapy, yoga teacher training, holistic nutrition or hypnotherapy. They often share that they kept seeing signs that directed them to the conscious college community of SWIHA. One commonly shared experience is a feeling of coming home as they entered the building or connected with classmates in the online class forums. That is because SWIHA is uniquely spirit-directed, offering more than 20 years of educational excellence dedicated to healing bodies and freeing souls. SWIHA never pushes or oversells its curricula. Incoming students have the opportunity to reflect upon the signs they’ve seen that seem to be pointing them to the school for the purpose of transforming their lives and the lives of those they prepare to serve upon graduation. Often individuals experience SWIHA for the first time at the inspirational Discover Your Gifts & Graces event held on the first Friday of every month. People often say they felt a knowing and saw signs everywhere inspiring them to advance their education, empower themselves and accelerate their careers so that they might serve in the world in a loving and profitable way. Pay attention, and you too, will notice the universe sending signs to guide you. Learn more about SWIHA at swiha.edu. See ad on inside back cover.

Counseling/Psychotherapy: These terms encompass a broad range of practitioners, from career counselors, who offer advice and information, to psychotherapists, who treat depression, stress, addiction and emotional issues. Formats can vary from individual counseling to group therapy. In addition to verbal counseling techniques, some holistic therapists may use bodywork, ritual, energy healing and other alternative modalities as part of their practice.

Craniosacral therapy (CST): A manual therapeutic procedure to remedy distortions in the structure and function of the craniosacral mechanism—the brain and spinal cord, the bones of the skull, the sacrum and interconnected membranes. Craniosacral work is based upon two major premises: that the bones of the skull can be manipulated, because they never completely fuse; and that the pulse of the cerebrospinal fluid can be balanced by a practitioner trained to detect variations in that pulse. CST is used to treat chronic pain, migraine headaches, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), ear and eye problems, balance problems, learning difficulties, dyslexia and hyperactivity. Crystal and gem therapy: Practitioners use quartz crystals and gemstones for therapeutic and healing purposes, asserting that the substances have recognizable energy frequencies and the capacity to amplify other frequencies in the body. They also absorb and store frequencies and can essentially be programmed to help effect healing. In the ancient art of ‘laying-on of stones,’ practitioners place crystals and gemstones on various parts of the body, corresponding to its chakra points (energy centers), in order to balance energy flow.

ourmet Girls Gluten Free Bakery/ Bistro is Southern Arizona’s support center for those avoiding gluten in their diets. Whether you are a newcomer to the often-confusing gluten-free lifestyle or a veteran at navigating its pathways, a warm and safe environment awaits at the completely gluten-free eatery. Owners Susan Fulton and Mary Steiger offer delicious breakfasts, lunches (and dinners on Friday and Saturday Susan Fulton and Mary Steiger so far), featuring fresh, house-made meals and baked goods. The girls love experimenting with exotic flavors such as their Chocolate Mango Chipotle Cupcake, and also serve up more traditional fare like biscuits and gravy, Eggs Benedict and their signature Double Decker Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Although the focus at the bakery/bistro is preparing products made without gluten, the friendly and knowledgeable staff is happy to help customize meals to meet specific dietary restrictions. The preparing of delectable food is a primary goal for the Gourmet Girls, but of equal importance is the creation of a caring gluten-free community focused on the emotional and spiritual needs of their guests. The gluten-free road to optimal health is not always smooth, and is frequently accompanied by feelings of anxiety, lack of control and a sense of being outside the norm. The bakery/bistro is a venue where guests are encouraged to share their stories, network with each other, educate themselves and form new friendships. Gourmet Girls Gluten Free Bakery/Bistro has been awarded the Celiac Sprue Association Seal of Recognition. Gourmet Girls Gluten Free Bakery/Bistro is located at 5845 N. Oracle Rd., in Tucson. A New Hope for Treating Depression

T

ranscranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a radically different depression treatment in which magnetic pulses are used to stimulate parts of the brain believed to be involved in mood regulation. Unlike electroconvulsive, or shock therapy, which is also used to treat stubborn depression, TMS does not generally produce seizures. The science behind TMS has been around for decades; dating back to 1831 with Michael Faraday and his discoveries about the fundamental principles of electromagnetic induction while attempting to stimulate nerves and the brain. Faraday’s attempts were unsuccessful due to limitations of technology then, but it was his work that lead to successful TMS in 1985. TMS was first approved in the United States in 2008 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat adults with major depression. It is approved for patients with depression that do not respond to antidepressants, or a person that can’t tolerate medication in general. Medications used for treating depression have many side effects, which include weight gain or loss, irritability, emotional outbursts, headache, constipation, diarrhea, insomnia and loss of libido. A TMS therapy patient sits in a physician’s office with a palm-sized magnet pressed to the head. A pulsed magnetic field, similar to that used in MRIs, creates an electrical current in the surface of the brain that stimulates the patient’s mood regulatory system. TMS has an advantage over some other treatments in that it is not invasive and unlike medication, it appears to have few side effects, which may include occasional discomfort or mild scalp sensitivity of the treatment area or headaches that can be treated with an over-the-counter analgesic. After a few treatments, the side effects disappear. TMS does not impair memory or cognition, the way electroconvulsive therapy can. There is no anesthesia or sedation needed. Patients are fully awake during treatment. A daily treatment session lasts about 37 minutes, delivering 3,000 stimulation pulses. This non-invasive treatment creates more convenience for the working person. A patient may drive themselves to and from daily treatments for a period lasting six to eight weeks. There are no restrictions on work, diet or other daily routine. The MindSource Centre is located at 7345 E. Tanque Verde Rd., in Tucson. Call 520-296-7766 or visit MindSourceCentre.com for the next free patient education day or to schedule a TMS consult with Dr. Streitfeld. See ad on page 4.

Dance/movement therapy: A method of expressing thoughts and feelings through movement, developed during the 1940s. Participants, guided by trained therapists, are encouraged to move freely, sometimes to music. Dance/movement therapy can be practiced by people of all ages to promote self-esteem and gain insight into their own emotional problems, but is also used to help those with serious mental and physical disabilities. In wide use in the United States, this modality is becoming established around the world.

Decluttering: Based on the theory that clutter drains both physical and mental energy. Decluttering involves two components. The first focuses on releasing things (clothing, papers, furniture, objects and ideas) that no longer serve a good purpose in one’s life. The second focuses on creating a simple system of personal organization that is easy to maintain and guards against accumulating things that are neither necessary or nourishing. Dentistry (Holistic): Regards the mouth as a microcosm of the entire body. The oral structures and the whole body are seen as a unit. Holistic dentistry often incorporates such methods as homeopathy, biocompatibility testing and nutritional counseling. Most holistic dentists emphasize wellness and preventive care, while avoiding (and often recommending the removal of) silver-mercury fillings. Detoxification: The practice of resting, cleansing and nourishing the body from the inside out. According to some holistic practitioners, accumulated toxins can drain the body of energy and make it more susceptible to disease. Detoxification techniques may include fasts, special diets, sauna sweats and colon cleansing.

The intuitive version of Emotional Freedom Technique helps to neutralize the emotional charges held at the cellular level to past events, traumas, beliefs, habits and patterns.

r. Kenneth Muhich, M.D., DO, DC, ND/ NMD, of the Fibromyalgia Wellness Center, states, “In 2005, through my clinical research, I developed a very successful protocol and patients have been symptom free for over eight years enjoying a normal state of living. “While working with fibromyalgia patients, I have seen them enter my clinic in wheelchairs, walkers and canes. Frustration runs high for these patients over the lack of proper medical support and understanding, which invariably leads to a half-hearted diagnosis. These are patients reaching out, literally pleading for help. Dr. Kenneth Muhich “My protocol, which is based on diet and nutrition, gives patients an opportunity to gain back their life. Through our program, they begin to enjoy activities previously only dreamed of because we treat the condition, not just the symptoms. Our patients are treated in a successful positive approach recognizing that no two fibromyalgia patients are alike in symptoms or conditions.” Fibromyalgia Wellness Center is located at 8300 N. Naturopathic Medicine is Real Medicine

F

Doula: A woman who supports an expectant mother through pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum period. Studies indicate that support in labor has profound benefits, including shorter labor, less desire for pain medication, lower rate of Caesarian delivery and more ease in initiation of breast feeding. Fathers have reported that they were more relaxed with a doula present because they felt reassured, and therefore freer to support their mates. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): A self-help procedure founded by Gary Craig that combines fingertip tapping of key acupuncture meridian points while focusing on an emotional issue or health challenge. Unresolved, or ‘stuck,’ negative emotions, caused by a disruption in the body’s energy system, are seen as major contributors to most physical pains and diseases. These can remain stagnant and trapped until released by the tapping. EFT is easy to memorize and portable, so it can be done anywhere. Energy field work: The art and practice of realigning and re-attuning the body between the physical and the etheric and auric fields to assist in natural healing processes. Working directly with the energy field in and around the body, the practitioner channels and directs energy into the cells, tissues and organs of the patient’s body to effect healing on physical and nonphysical levels simultaneously. Sessions may or may not involve the physical laying on of hands.

eel Great Again. When is the last time you really felt great? Have fatigue, pain, digestive distress or chronic illness been an issue for you? Were you shuttled in and out in 15 minutes at your last doctor’s appointment? You have a choice in your medical care; consider naturopathic medicine. Naturopathic physicians are licensed primary care physicians in the state of Arizona that treat the whole body. Medical training includes attending a federally accredited, four-year, post-graduate medical school. Naturopathic physicians are able to order labs, diagnose and help patients heal using a variety of safe and effective treatment options. Naturopathic care consists of choosing minimally invasive treatments while the underlying cause of issues is being addressed. Patients are encouraged to be advocates and empowered participants in their health care. Diet and lifestyle are powerful contributors to health and are a foundation of naturopathic treatment. Pharmaceutical intervention may be prescribed when necessary. Individualized treatment plans allow people to heal on physical, emotional and spiritual levels. Licensed naturopathic physicians receive extensive didactic and clinical training in the the modalities of women’s health/gynecology, men’s health, pediatrics, cardiology, pulmonology, clinical nutrition, pain management and minor surgery.

T

he internationally acclaimed speaker on holistic dentistry Dr. Michael Margolis heads the staff at My Dentist, with Dr. Stephen Kovar and a team of dedicated professionals. Their goal is to provide patients with the most Dr. Michael Margolis effective holistic dental care available by customizing dental needs using holistic techniques, patient education and a supportive relationship. Flower remedies: Flower essences are recognized for their ability to improve well-being by eliminating negative emotions. In the 1930s, English physician Edward Bach concluded that negative emotions could lead to physical illness. His research also convinced him that flowers possessed healing properties that could be used to treat emotional problems. In the 1970s, Richard Katz completed Bach’s work and established the Flower Essence Society, which has registered some 100 essences from flowers in more than 50 countries. Functional medicine: A personalized medicine that focuses on primary prevention and deals with underlying causes, instead of symptoms, for serious chronic diseases. Treatments are grounded in nutrition and improved lifestyle habits and may make use of medications. The discipline uses a holistic approach to analyze and treat interdependent systems of the body and to create the dynamic balance integral to good health. G u i d e d i m a g e r y a n d c r e a t iv e visualization: Uses positive thoughts, images and symbols to focus the mind on the workings of the body to accomplish a particular goal, desired outcome or physiological change, such as pain relief or healing of disease. This flow of thought can take many forms and involve, through the imagination, all the physical senses. Imagination is an important element of the visualization process; it helps create a mental picture of what is desired in order to transform life circumstances.

HEALING ARTS CONNECTION, LLC

Herbal medicine: This oldest form of medicine uses natural plants in a wide variety of forms for their therapeutic value. Herbs produce and contain various chemical substances that act upon the body to strengthen its natural functions without the negative side effects of synthetic drugs. They may be taken internally or applied externally via teas, tinctures, extracts, oils, ointments, compresses and poultices.

JOURNEY TO HEALING

Holotropic breathwork: A selfexploration technique that combines breathing, evocative music and a specific form of bodywork to integrate one’s physical, psychological and spiritual dimensions. At workshops run by facilitators, participants try to access the four “levels” of experience that are available during breathing: sensory, biographical, perinatal and transpersonal. By accessing buried memories, individuals can relive their birth experience or traumatic life events, free up ‘stuck’ emotional viewpoints or experience a mystical state of awareness, such as connecting with the Universe.

Homeopathy: A therapy that uses small doses of specially prepared plants and minerals to stimulate the body’s defense mechanisms and healing processes in order to cure illness. Homeopathy, taken from the Greek words homeos, meaning “similar,” and pathos, meaning “suffering,” employs the concept that “like cures like.” A remedy is individually chosen for a person based on its capacity to cause, if given in an overdose, physical and psychological symptoms similar to those the patient is experiencing. Negative behavior patterns learned through experience can hold you back in life. Hypnosis and NLP are just two of the powerful resources that are used to create fast and lasting change. If not NOW, when?

Hydrotherapy: The use of water, ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full-body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for treating a wide range of conditions and can easily be used at home as part of a self-care program.

Hypnotherapy: A range of hypnosis techniques that allow practitioners to bypass the conscious mind and access the subconscious. The altered state that occurs under hypnosis has been compared to a state of deep meditation or transcendence, in which the innate recuperative abilities of the psyche are allowed to flow more freely. The subject can achieve greater clarity regarding his or her own wants and needs, explore other events or periods of life that require resolution, or generally develop a more positive attitude. Often used to help people lose weight or stop smoking, it is also used in the treatment of phobias, stress and as an adjunct to the treatment of illnesses. Integrative medicine: This holistic approach combines conventional Western medicine with complementary alternative treatments, in order to simultaneously treat mind, body and spirit. Geared to the promotion of health and the prevention of illness, it neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative therapies, without serious evaluation.

Intuitive arts: A general term for various methods of divination, such as numerology, psychic reading, and tarot reading. Individuals may consult practitioners to seek information about the future or insights into personal concerns or their personality. Numerology emphasizes the significance of numbers derived from the spelling of names, birth dates and other significant references; psychics may claim various abilities, from finding lost objects and persons to communicating with the spirits of the dead; tarot readers interpret a deck of cards containing archetypal symbols. Iridology: Analysis of the delicate structure of the iris, the colored portion of the eye, to reveal information about conditions within the body. More than 90 specific zones on each iris, for a combined total of 180-plus zones, correspond to specific areas of the body. Because body weaknesses are often noticeable in the iris long before they are discernible through blood work or other laboratory analysis, iridology can be a useful tool for preventive self-care. Jin Shin (or Jin Shin Jyutsu): A gentle, non-invasive energy-balancing art and philosophy that embodies a life of simplicity, calmness, patience and self-containment. Practitioners employ simple acupressure techniques, using their fingers and hands on a fullyclothed client to help eliminate stress, create emotional equilibrium, relieve pain and alleviate acute or chronic conditions. Kinesiology/applied kinesiology: The study of muscles and their movement. Applied kinesiology tests the relative strength and weakness of selected muscles to identify decreased function in body organs and systems, as well as imbalances and restrictions in the body’s energy flow. Some tests use acupuncture meridians and others analyze interrelationships among muscles, organs, the brain and the body’s energy field. Applied kinesiology is also used to check the body’s response to treatments that are being considered.

Macrobiotics: An Eastern philosophy best known in the West for its dietary principles. Macrobiotic theory posits that there is a natural order to all things. By synchronizing our eating habits with the cycles of nature, we can achieve a fuller sense of balance within ourselves and with the world around us. Although not a specific diet, it emphasizes low-fat and high-fiber foods, whole grains, vegetables, sea vegetables and seeds, all cooked in accordance with macrobiotic principles. Magnetic field therapy: Electromagnetic energy and the human body have a vital and valid interrelationship, making it possible to use magnetic field therapy as an aid in diagnosing and treating physical and emotional disorders. This process is reported to relieve symptoms and may, in some cases, retard the cycle of new diseases. Magnets and electromagnetic therapy devices are now being used to eliminate pain, facilitate the healing of broken bones and counter the effects of stress.

David B. Meditation: The intentional directing of attention to one’s inner self. Methods and practices to achieve a meditative state are based upon various principles using the body or mind and may employ control or letting-go mechanisms. Techniques include the use of imagery, mantras and observation, and the control of breathing. Research has shown that regular meditation can contribute to psychological and physiological well-being. As a spiritual practice, meditation is used to facilitate a mystical sense of oneness with a higher power or the Universe. It can also help reduce stress and alleviate stress-related ailments, such as anxiety and high blood pressure. Mediumship: A medium professes to mentally see, hear and/or sense persons or entities in a spiritual dimension, and convey messages from them to people in the physical world. Readings focus on evidential messages from recognizable personalities in the spirit world. The messages are delivered as guidance for one’s “highest good.” Midwife: A birth attendant who assists a woman through the prenatal, labor, birth and postpartum stages of pregnancy. The mother is encouraged to be involved and to feel in control of her birthing experience. Midwives are knowledgeable about normal pregnancy, labor, birth and pain relief options. They respect the process of birth as an innate and familiar process. Certified nurse-midwives are registered nurses who have received advanced training and passed a national certification exam. Nurse-midwives collaborate with physicians as needed, especially when problems arise during pregnancy. (Also see Doula.) Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Techniques (NAET): A non-invasive, drug free, natural modality that tests for and eliminate allergies. NAET uses a blend of selective energy balancing, testing and treatment procedures from acupuncture, acupressure, allopathy, chiropractic, kinesiology and nutritional medicine. Naturopathy: Licensed physicians that practice naturopathic medicine have the designation ND or NMD after their name and are often referred to as a naturopathic doctor or naturopathic medical doctor. Training may include the study of specific approaches, including massage, manipulation, acupuncture, acupressure, counseling, applied nutrition, herbal medicine, homeopathy and minor surgery plus basic obstetrics for assistance with natural childbirth. Network chiropractic: Uses Network Spinal Analysis (NSA), a system of assessing and contributing to spinal and neural integrity, as well as health and wellness. Founded and developed by Donald Epstein. Practitioners employ gentle force to the spine to help the body eliminate mechanical tension in the neurological system. The body naturally develops strategies to dissipate stored tension/energy, thus enhancing self-regulation of tension and spinal interference. (Also see Chiropractic.) Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP): A systematic approach to changing the limiting patterns of thought, behavior and language. Through conversation, practitioners observe the client’s language, eye movements, posture, breathing and gestures, in order to detect and help change unconscious patterns linked to the client’s emotional state.

An A for Apples

It’s a Top-Ranked Superstar Fruit by Tania Melkonian

N

utrient density—an acknowledged characteristic of apples—is considered the most significant qualification for a superfood. “It’s one of the healthiest foods,” advises Case Adams, from Morro Bay, California, a naturopathic doctor with a Ph.D. in natural health sciences. Apples’ antioxidant power alone could elevate it to status as a superior superfood. Eating apples could help ward off America’s most pressing yet preventable, chronic illnesses, which the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services cites as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Strategic Eating

Morwenna Given, a medical herbalist and Canadian member of the American Herbalists Guild, from Toronto, explains why and shares an analogy, “The normal metabolic processes of oxidation produce reactive oxygen species (free radicals) with unpaired electrons that hunt and steal partner electrons from the body’s cells. Imagine an electrical plug wherein the grounding wire has been eliminated or compromised. There is nothing to prevent a surge or fire.” This is comparable to what happens to a body impacted by a poor diet, lack of exercise, stress and illness; its healthy grounding is compromised.

When the overall damage to cell structure overwhelms the body’s innate antioxidation defenses, conditions are ripe for disease and accelerated aging. Foods high in antioxidants, like the apple, help to neutralize the damage and heal bodily tissues. Flavonoids—like the quercetin just beneath the peel—are another of the apple’s powerful nutrient partners, notes Adams in his book, The Ancestors Diet. So, even when making applesauce, including the peel is vital. With the exception of vitamin C, all other nutrient compounds remain intact when the fruit is cooked. Subtle differences in polyphenol levels exist among apple varieties, according to Linus Pauling Institute testing. Polyphenol compounds ultimately activate the fruit’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Northern spy, Fuji and especially red delicious varieties are the richest in antioxidants; empire and golden delicious harbor relatively low levels. “Some older varieties that had lost popularity with large-scale commercial farmers are now being grafted again, thanks to a return to organic practices,” remarks Meredith Hayes, schools and student nutrition senior manager at FoodShare, a leading North American food security organization. NaturalTucson.com

Note that conventionally grown apples top the Environmental Working Group’s list of 48 fruits and vegetables tested for pesticide residue (ewg.org/ foodnews/list.php). That’s yet another sound reason, along with better taste and nutrition, to go organic.

Good Genes

“The purpose of any seed is to replicate the species,” explains Given. “The pulp around the seed protects and feeds the seed until it’s burrowed into the soil and germinates. Older species evolved to be protective of their seeds to survive against pests and other insults. Commercially grown produce, however, has generally bred out the secondary metabolites that house so many of a plant’s nutrients.” It helps to know that imperfect-looking food has potentially synthesized more sugars and nutrients in response to stress in order to survive, making blemishes or irregular shapes more appealing as consumers discover the core value of non-homogenized fruit. In 2012, Hayes worked with Tom O’Neill, general manager of Canada’s Norfolk Fruit Growers Association, to repackage smaller “unacceptable” apples into an ideal bag weight and size for a second-grader to carry and share in school meal and snack programs. Previously, these “too-small” apples were being tilled back into soil or sold in Europe because there was no market for them here,” says Hayes. “So, we looked for ways to honor imperfect fruit.” Other beneficial movements against food waste that are also making produce more affordable include France’s Intermarché supermarket’s popular inglorious fruits and vegetables campaign, with the tagline, “As good, but 30 percent cheaper,” and Portugal’s ugly fruit program. Such initiatives are raising happy awareness of so-called imperfect, and often organically grown, food. By recognizing and appreciating the apple during this season’s harvest, we honor its versatility, affordability, broad availability and culinary flexibility. Natural Dead Sea Salt Heals a Host of Ailments

S

cottsdale’s Salt Chalet Arizona is available for people statewide with respiratory ailments and high rates of asthma that are exacerbated by smoggy air, dust and high pollen counts as a popular alternative to treatment with drugs. Owner Pavel Gershkovich says, “People don’t have to travel to the Middle East to experience the documented healing properties of salt from the Dead Sea, which is much Pavel Gershkovich more saturated with minerals that detoxify the body, stimulate blood circulation and relieve tension and muscle aches than ordinary salt.” In two salt rooms at Salt Chalet Arizona, clients sit inside the rooms that are covered from floor-to-ceiling with layers of pure salt imported from the Dead Sea for 45-minute sessions while a fine mist of salt is sprayed into the room. The salt makes its way deep into the lungs, where it kills harmful bacteria, clears mucus buildup and opens air passages. Individuals have found relief from asthma, sinus headaches, allergies, COPD and more. The National Psoriasis Foundation recommends Dead Sea salt, and research has found that its high concentration of magnesium is instrumental in improving skin hydration and reducing inflammation. Salt Chalet Arizona is located at 5011 N. Granite Reef Rd., in Scottsdale. For more information, call 480-621-6041 or visit SaltChaletArizona.com or ArizonaLeechTherapy.com. See ad on page 6.

Dr. Sparer Uses Non-Force Technique for Breakthrough Treatments

D

r. Harlan Sparer, a chiropractor and owner of Tempe Directional Non Force Technique Chiropractic, treats the whole person, understanding that sometimes the body, mind and spirit need to be addressed together to find the true cause and restore health. He knows that health is not merely the absence of disease; it is a state of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. He states, “Many chiropractic problems require the location and removal of subluxation (a bone and its contiguous structures Dr. Harlan Sparer out of alignment, causing nerve interference). Dr. Richard Van Rumpt developed the Directional Non-Force Technique (DNFT), which involves a precise analysis and correction of subluxations causing nerve interference, considering alignment from front-to-back (posterior), side-to-side (lateral), tilted or back-to-front (anterior) and front-to-back (posterior). Sparer refers to himself as a wholistic chiropractor and has limited his practice in Tempe to this modality. Bones, ligaments, muscles and discs are aligned utilizing the thumbs to adjust them with a few ounces of force. A reactive leg reflex that dynamically shortens in response to a physical challenge is the indicator utilized to determine which segments are out of alignment. PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

Find the Ascended Masters at the Temple of Universality

TAO TIME

T

he Temple of Universality, in Tucson, is a spiritualist church founded by Reverend Betty Tatalajski. The Temple’s story began in 1979 when she was a teacher and student of A Course in Miracles and also a student of Reverend Robert Ireland, one of the most gifted phenomena mediums in the U.S. When Ireland was in deep trance, his teacher, Dr. Carlos Blair, instructed Betty to take her Course in Miracles class to Camp Chesterfield, the well-known spiritualist community in Indiana. There, she was told Reverend Betty Tatalajski by Sanat Kumara—the head of the planetary spiritual hierarchy—that she was to start a new universal consciousness called Universality. The Ascended Masters said Universality was to be based on the universal truths found in all religions. This formed the 10 tenets of the Temple. In 1995, Sanat Kumara directed Betty to “Build the temple.” That year, the Temple of Universality was born. Services were held in different locations, including outdoors in Reid Park, until a permanent home was found at the Tucson Masonic Lodge. Today, under Rev. Betty, and with the guidance of Sanat Kumara, Saint Germain and the Ascended Masters, the activities of the Temple of Universality include healing, spiritual art, psychic messages and phenomena, classes, a television show, Steps Beyond Time, and the Golden Pyramid Meditation that Betty received while in meditation. Location: Masonic Temple, 3590 N. Country Club Rd., Tucson. For more information, call 520-884-5340, email TempleOfUniversality@gmail.com or visit TheTempleOfUniversality.org. See ad on page 41.

Orthomolecular medicine: Employs vitamins, minerals and amino acids to create nutritional content and balance in the body. Orthomolecular medicine targets a wide range of conditions, including depression, hypertension, cancer, schizophrenia and other mental and physiological disorders. Osteopathy/osteopathic physicians: Osteopathy uses generally accepted physical, pharmacological and surgical methods of diagnosis and therapy, with a strong emphasis on body mechanics and manipulative methods to detect and correct faulty structure and function, in order to restore the body’s natural healing capacities. Doctors of Osteopathy (D.O.) are fully trained and licensed according to the same standards as medical doctors (M.D.) and receive additional extensive training in the body’s structure and functions. Oxygen therapies: Alters the body’s chemistry to help overcome disease, promote repair and improve overall function. Properly applied, oxygen may be used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including infections, circulatory problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, allergies, cancer and multiple sclerosis. The major types of oxygen therapy used to treat illness are hyperbaric oxygen and ozone. Hydrogen peroxide therapy (oral or intravenous) can be dangerous and should be avoided.

Past Life Regression: Past life and regression therapies operate on the assumption that many physical, mental and emotional challenges are extensions of unresolved problems from the past, either childhood traumas or experiences in previous lifetimes. The practitioner uses hypnosis or other altered states of consciousness and relaxation techniques to access the source of this “unfinished business,” and helps clients to analyze, integrate and release past traumas that are interfering with their current lives.

Real Time EEG Neurofeedback: Involves direct training of brain function. Using computer processing to capture electrical activity in the brain, an individual can reward the brain with positive feedback, changing its activity to desired, more appropriate patterns. Gradually, the brain learns and remembers how to exhibit only the good patterns. Rebirthing breathwork: Also known as conscious connected breathing, or vivation. Rebirthing is a means to access and release unresolved emotions. The technique uses conscious, steady, rhythmic breathing, without pausing between inhaling and exhaling. Guided by a professional rebirther, clients re-experience past memories, including birth, and let go of emotional tension stored in the body. Reconnective Healing: Uses light and dimensional frequencies that work on all levels of the body/mind to reduce stress, foster relaxation and raise the body’s healing vibration. The idea of Reconnective Healing is to reconnect the meridian or acupuncture lines on the body that have become disconnected from the larger, universal grid of meridian lines. Regression therapies: Operate on the assumption that many physical, mental and emotional problems are extensions of unresolved problems from the past, such as childhood traumas. The practitioner uses hypnosis, or other altered states of consciousness, and relaxation techniques to access the source of “unfinished business,” and helps clients to analyze, integrate and release past traumas that are interfering with their current lives. Reflexology: A natural healing art based upon the principle that there are reflexes in the feet and hands that correspond to every part of the body. Correctly stimulating and applying pressure to the feet or hands increases circulation and promotes specifically designated bodily and muscular functions.

INTERFAITH COMMUNITY Rev. Julianne Lewis 480-593-8798 interfaith-community.org

Reiki: Means “universal life-force energy.” A method of activating and balancing the life-force (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”). Practitioners use light hand placements to channel healing energies to organs and glands or to align the body’s chakras (energy centers). Various techniques can ease emotional and mental distress, heal chronic and acute physical problems and achieve spiritual focus and clarity. Reiki can be a valuable addition to the work of chiropractors, massage therapists, nurses and others for whom the use of touch is essential and appropriate. Rolfing structural integration (Rolfing): A hands-on technique for deep tissue manipulation of the myofascial system, which is composed of the muscles and the connective tissue, or fascia, in order to restore the body’s natural alignment and sense of integration. As the body is released from old patterns and postures, the range and freedom of physical and emotional expression increases. Rolfing can help ease pain and chronic stress, enhance neurological functioning, improve posture and restore flexibility. Shamanism: An ancient healing tradition which believes that loss of power is the real source of illness and that all healing includes the spiritual dimension. Shamanic healing usually involves induction into an altered state of consciousness and journeying into the spirit world to regain personal power and to access the powers of nature and of teachers. Shamanic healing may be taken literally or employed symbolically, but in or out of its cultural context, the tradition can be both self-empowering and self-healing.

Our community is an openminded and inter-generational group of spiritual seekers who honor and respect all peaceful beliefs. Visit us this Sunday, 10:30 am.

Sound healing: Employs vocal and instrumental tones, generated internally or externally. When sounds are produced with healing intent, they can create sympathetic resonance in the physical and energy bodies. Sound healing also is used to bring discordant energy into balance and harmony.

Shiatsu: The most widely known form of acupressure, Shiatsu is a Japanese word meaning finger pressure. The technique applies varying degrees of pressure to balance the life energy that flows through specific pathways, or meridians, in the body. Used to release tension and strengthen weak areas in order to facilitate even circulation, cleanse cells and improve the function of vital organs. Shiatsu may be used to help diagnose, prevent and relieve many chronic and acute conditions that manifest on both physical and emotional levels.

Spiritual healing/counseling: Practiced in two forms. In one, the healer uses thought or touch to align his or her spiritual essence with that of the client. The healer works to either balance the spiritual field or shift the perceptual base of the client to create harmony between mind and body and draw the client into the active presence of Divine Spirit. In the other, the healer transforms healing energy into a vibrational frequency that the client can receive and comfortably assimilate, reminding the person’s intuitive core of its inherent healing ability.

Tantra: Has emerged as a modern spiritual path of embodied consciousness, with roots in ancient Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Tantra views the ‘spiritual’ as being directly present within the ‘physical’ and respects sensory experience as a vehicle for accessing higher states of awareness. Tantric practices balance the chakras (energy centers) and can contribute to a sense of presence, intimacy and fulfillment in all aspects of living. Tantra Tai chi: A recently developed practice of Tai chi/qigong-style body movements designed to be performed with a partner. It can enhance intimacy by sequentially and simultaneously focusing attention on the root, or sexual center, near the base of the spine, the heart or love center in the mid-chest region and the upper spiritual center in the head. The cycling of energy through these chakra centers encourages a blended experience of intimate presence with one’s own internal being and one’s partner. The Results System: A non-intrusive system using kinesiology (biofeedback via muscle testing) to identify and release body stressors at a cellular level, allowing the body to operate at the highest levels of efficiency possible. It may have a positive affect on conditions such as chemical imbalance, learning disorders, attention deficit disorders and alcoholism.

Trager approach (psychophysical integration): A system of movement re-education that seeks to address the mental roots of muscle tension. By gently rocking, cradling and moving the client’s fully clothed body, the practitioner encourages him or her to see that physically restrictive patterns can be changed. The Trager approach includes “mentastics,” simple, active, self-induced movements that can be done by the client during regular daily activities. Trager work has been successfully applied to a variety of neuromuscular disorders, and to the stresses and discomforts of everyday living. Vegetarianism: The voluntary abstinence from eating meat and/or other animal products for religious, health and/or ethical reasons. Lactoovo vegetarians supplement their plantbased diet with dairy (lactose) products and eggs (ovo). Lacto vegetarians eat dairy products, but not eggs; ovo vegetarians include eggs, but no dairy; and vegans (pronounced vee-guns) do not eat any animal-derived products. Yoga: Practical application of the ancient Indian Vedic teachings. The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj which means “union” or “to join,” and refers to the joining of man’s physical, mental and spiritual elements. The goal of good health is accomplished through a combination of techniques, including physical exercises called asanas (or postures), controlled breathing, relaxation, meditation and diet and nutrition. Although yoga is not meant to cure specific diseases or ailments directly, it has been found effective in treating many physical ailments. Yoga therapy: The application of yoga principles, methods and techniques to empower individuals to progress towards greater health and freedom from disease, representing a first effort to integrate traditional yogic concepts and techniques with Western medical and psychological knowledge. Yoga therapy aims at the holistic treatment of various kinds of psychological or somatic dysfunctions, ranging from emotional distress to back problems. 78
