letterfrompublisher When we think about the subject of women’s health, myriad illnesses, treatments and other considerations come to mind. Breast cancer is always near the top, and in researching stories for our May Women’s Wellness issue, I continue to be startled by the statistics. According to the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health, 2014 will bring an estimated 232,670 new cases of female breast cancer and 40,000 deaths. touched by this disease? While October is usually awash in pink ribbons and breast cancer awareness, many Valley physicians tell me what’s missing is the keen focus on educating the general public about preventative measures that can be taken for optimal health. The time to start focusing on health is before issues occur. Proactive prevention can help us improve and maintain good health over the long term. Our cover story this month touches upon another important aspect of women’s health, which is empowerment and encouraging women to listen to their own body. Yes, that intuition that something isn’t quite right could be an important message to be checked out by a licensed health care professional. We are also fortunate to have editorial contributions from many local health care experts on specific women’s health issues: fertility, hormones, headaches, colon cancer and digestive issues, to name just a few. When it comes to disseminating valuable health and wellness information and even medical advice from certified professionals, Natural Awakenings is proud to bring it to our readers in an objective, unbiased manner that allows you to do some homework before making a decision that may last a lifetime— or even extend it.

F

reddie Zeringue, a transformational coach and facilitator for over 25 years, has announced the release of his long-awaited new book, The Art of Flow, available in print and digital form. Known for helping clients achieve breakthroughs in the areas of health, relationships, prosperity and personal well-being, he has distilled vital principles into The Art of Flow, marking a new direction in the transformational field. Zeringue, publisher of the Northeast Florida edition of Natural Awakenings magazine, says, “The point of the book is to bring people into a state of natural flow, where they are able to create their lives in a very dynamic way that overrides resistance and opens up space to let in the limitless bounty of creation. The Art of Flow goes beyond The Secret and other books in the field to transform how we see ourselves and each other, objectively analyzing great teachings from a new perspective and embracing the idea that we are ‘divine creators’.” Universally applicable and harmonizing with any individual’s personal beliefs or spiritual path, the essentials of the book are practical explanations of concepts we are all familiar with—things we’ve heard so often that we might assume we already know what’s at their core. Zeringue brings them into a new light, illuminating how they work together to dynamically create our lives. The mastery of these principles is profoundly life changing. The book is available on Amazon.com and ArtofFlow.com, which features a free audio supplement available for download.

Mobile Service for Active Isolated Stretching Available in Phoenix Area

P

hoenix fitness specialist Damian Motlo is offering a mobile service to bring Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) to individuals at home or work. He states, “AIS therapy is unlike traditional warm-up exercises used prior to a workout. It allows the body to become more flexible and mobile by improving one’s overall range of motion and works more quickly than other forms of stretching. Having increased mobility can also positively impact athletic performance.” Motlo believes that AIS helps facilitate blood flow and oxygenation in the muscles using gentle and rhythmic movements. His mobile service provides the innovative therapy throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area. AIS sessions are typically one hour in length and participants should be comfortably clothed. Stretching can begin from a massage table or a chair. Motlo offers single sessions or packages for a reduced rate. Office visits are also available as part of corporate wellness programs. Free initial consultations are available. Damian Motlo is a stretch therapist and nationally certified personal trainer. For appointments, call 480-452-2578. SWIHA Offers a Massage Therapy Win/Win

T

he Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA) offers two comprehensive massage diploma programs at its Tempe campus, and both exceed the 700-hour requirements for massage therapy training in Arizona. Choose from either the 750-hour Professional Massage Practitioner program or the 1,000-hour Master Massage Practitioner program. Graduates of either program will be eligible to apply for licensure and well prepared to pass the national certification exam if they choose to do so. Professional massage therapists know there is a sweet trade-off when they apply their skills. Many say they receive the healing benefits of the massage they are giving. Suzie McLaughlin, LMT, and longtime Massage Therapy Program instructor at SWIHA says, “People are always happy to see you! One of the great secrets we have in massage therapy is that while we are giving massage to our clients, we match their relaxation levels, so giving a massage is much like having a meditation.” Also, healthcare providers are increasingly incorporating massage therapy for cancer patients, fibromyalgia and many types of disorders into treatment. Classes in SWIHA’s Massage Therapy Program begin in June, August and September. For more information, visit swiha.edu. See ad on page 17.

Microdwelling May Be Wave of the Future

A

group of graduate students at Arizona State University is designing a “tinyhouse” fully functional mobile dwelling unit of under 120 square feet that is completely solar powered. Dubbed “the Maushaus,” it will go on display at the School of Sustainability Open House on May 1. Spokesperson Sigma Dolins states, “We took on this project because as residents in an urban context; people who have housing, some of us who own, some of us who rent, all of us who think sustainability is important, wanted a chance to show people what it’s like when you walk the walk. We wanted people to really envision what it would be like to live life with less, and still be happy—even happier than they were before!” Equipped with a loft and eventually a sofa bed in the living room, Maushaus will sleep up to four people. There’s a full shower, a compostable toilet and counter space sufficient for a toaster oven, stainless steel sink, electrical stovetop burners and a dorm-sized fridge. The windows are dualpaned Low-E windows that let in sunlight without the heat. The walls, floors and roof are made out of structurally insulated panels, which have a high insulation rating, instead of traditional wood framed construction. ccording to the National Institutes of Health, lower respiratory infections are more prevalent worldwide than HIV, malaria, cancer and heart attacks. Those that suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis or asthma are especially prone, reports the journal PLOS Medicine. Treatment can be especially difficult when it’s unclear if the cause is a virus, bacterium or fungus. The typical Western practice of ingesting pills spreads drugs throughout the body instead of treating only the air-side of the lungs, where the problem is located. It’s better to target the active treatment agent only where it’s needed. A study in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases suggests delivering a fine-droplet mist from a nebulizer directly atop the invading pathogens and replenishing often to keep the area moist with antimicrobials. This can achieve far greater local dosing with far lower systemic penetration. Choose an antimicrobial that kills all three potential types of pathogens so the physician won’t need to guess the proper drug or try them sequentially. A more natural option is to avoid drugs. Clinical studies by the Klearsen Corporation and the laboratory work at National Jewish Hospital have shown that locally administering an enhanced aqueous colloid of silver in the recommended manner will clear even the most stubborn pathogens. Plus, it has no adverse side effects. When dosing with a liquid colloid of silver concentration of 50 parts per million (ppm) or more, the suggested protocol is usually three milliliters, three times per day. For acute infections, the three-milliliter dose can be administered every two waking hours. Using a nebulizer is essential to achieve the effective micro-droplets required to reach all areas of the lungs, because inhaling the nebulized mist deep into the lungs will coat the invading pathogens. Note that a vaporizer isn’t suitable because its steam delivery will leave the active ingredients behind. Steven Frank, has researched respiratory infection therapies for 15 years and holds three related patents. He can be reached at SteveF@NaturesRiteRemedies.com. See ad on page 57.

Hormones Aren’t the Boss of You

H

ow many women imagined when their mother told them about the “change of life” and “hot flashes” that one day it would really finally happen to them? Menopause has always been described as an uncomfortable feeling and mood-changing process, but until we experience it ourselves, we really can’t understand the magnitude of what all of the changes feel like. Hitting menopause really is a life-altering change. Here are some tips to help divide and conquer this new world. Eat more tofu and soy products. Soy and tofu not only protect our heart and arteries, but are helpful with hot flashes. It will take two to six weeks of being consistent to see the benefits. Eat more beans. Beans contain phytoestrogens. They’re good sources of many vitamins and minerals, including calcium, folic acid and vitamin B6 , and they are a low-fat source of protein. Eat more of the good fats. Yes, good fat can be beneficial. The right fats are omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, olive oil and canola oil. High-fat foods are usually high in calories and low in nutrients; exactly the opposite of what a woman in or past menopause needs. Use olive oil and canola oil when cooking to add more of the good fats. Use essential oils to help with mood and hormone balance. A few more ideas would be to add more fruits and vegetables, graze on healthy choices and not gorge on big meals, and make sure we are getting enough calcium by eating foods high in this valuable mineral. Remember that there is hope on our journey through all the changes of life, and we can each take steps to stay in control of our bodies and our moods, instead of surrendering to mood swings and other unpleasant side effects of aging. Banishing Headaches at the Source by Dr. Harlan Sparer

W

e often treat a headache with an over-the-counter analgesic or essential oils, but the problem with this approach is that it does nothing to remove the reason for it. While some causes are benign, others can be lethal. A headache can have many causes or come from a combination of them. The general categories are direct pressure on the brain, neurological, vascular, biochemical and infection. Direct pressure on the brain is the most serious, but least likely cause. Persistent headaches should be evaluated by a health care professional well versed in diagnosis, such as a chiropractor, naturopathic physician, acupuncturist, osteopathic physician, nurse or M.D. The same is true for an infection.

A biochemical cause can sometimes exist due to diet and/or hormonal imbalance, and is often found with other root causes in tandem. Sometimes lack of food, dehydration or blood sugar imbalances are at the bottom of this, providing for a quick fix. Another source is a food intolerance or reaction; sometimes chemical, toxins or pesticides. Other times, there is a glandular or organ dysfunction. This problem is typically ignored or minimized when it is operating in concert with other causes. The vascular type often responds to chiropractic care, because 50 percent of the blood supply to the brain travels through the vertebra via the vertebral arteries, while the other 50 percent travels in blood vessels

with thick, muscular coverings (coats). When this is compromised by subluxation of the vertebra, headaches can result from mechanical compression of the blood supply. The head and neck are also enervated by the upper cervical nerves. When this nerve supply is compromised by an alignment issue that causes interference with nerve function (vertebral subluxation), a vascular headache is often the result. Vascular headaches can be caused on occasion by other factors as well, usually requiring more invasive methods to resolve them. A common and particularly nasty form of headache is the migraine, characterized by specific symptoms that include nausea, vomiting and light sensitivity that can last for days. There is a series of events which precede the headache, known as the prodromal period. The muscle coat, a covering which controls the diameter of the blood vessels to the brain, goes into spasm with this condition. The muscle coat eventually fatigues and the blood vessel gets flaccid as a result, causing a throbbing of the vessel with each heartbeat, creating severe, debilitating symptoms. This condition often responds dramatically to chiropractic care because the muscle coats of these blood vessels (actually all muscle coats) are controlled by nerve impulses from the cervical spine. The important fact about a headache is that it is a general symptom that needs to be associated with a cause and treated, rather than merely alleviated. Failure to do so will only complicate the cause and make it more difficult to help when the cause progresses further, saving no money, time and pain. Dr. Harlan Sparer is a DNFT chiropractor practicing in Tempe. He can be reached at 480-245-7894 or DrHarlan@TempeNonForce. com. The Healing Magic of the Body/Mind by Lynn Andrews

S

hamanism is the oldest form of healing on Earth. The term “shaman” is used by anthropologists to refer to the medicine people of any indigenous culture that are both spiritual leaders and healers and use a mystical connection with sacred wisdom to facilitate healing. Shaman is also a designation used by the public to include anyone that combines spiritual principles and energy work to facilitate deep personal healing and spiritual well-being with a direct connection to the divine. People have the opportunity to apprentice with indigenous shamans and learn the ancient ways to bring back to our traditional cultures. When we practice healing energy work from a shamanic perspective, we learn how to go into a state of introspection to connect with the body/mind, that place at the center of your being where we are one with the sacred energies of existence. Introspection is a form of meditation and conscious dreaming with the specific focus and intent of accessing our body/mind to establish an inner dialogue regarding what we seek to heal. Our body/mind is intimately connected with intuition, that quick and ready insight that comes to us in the present moment. Intuition is the direct perception of knowledge and wisdom without the distractions and filters of the ego mind. Learning how to connect with and honor our intuition is one of the key elements of shamanic healing. From the place of intuition and our body/mind, we examine our health and well-being in any situation to see where we are harboring the stress of the situation in our body, 22

our mind, our emotions and our spirit. Integrative practitioners especially recognize the mind/body/spirit connection and the role that attitudes, beliefs and emotions play in our personal health and well-being. There is no longer any doubt that stress is one of the leading causes of disease in the world. The body has a great ability to heal itself, but when we are filled with stress, even the most advanced medical technologies are impaired in their ability to facilitate an internal healing environment. Learning how to go into a state of deep personal introspection in which we observe and examine our mental and emotional state in the present moment is a major step toward creating a healing environment within the body. From there, we go into a state of meditation and conscious dreaming to access and dialogue with the body/

mind. There are many ways to arrive at a state of introspection and meditation, from yoga to sitting in silence while we practice focused breathing. A shaman knows that conscious breathing is a vital aspect of personal well-being. With stress and anxiety we tend to hold our bodies rigid, which results in shallow breathing instead of breathing from the belly, which we do automatically when we are born. As we begin to become conscious of our breathing and practice deep breathing on a regular basis, a better supply of oxygen reaches our cells and organs, especially the brain, healing many of the imbalances in our life. This is a simple and beautiful practice of breathwork called the Breath of Compassion: Sit under a tree against the bark, close your eyes and begin simply breathing slowly and rhythmically. As you inhale, say, “I love myself.” As you exhale, say, “I love others.” Do this for at least three or four breaths as you go deeply into the silence. Then begin to imagine the sap as it goes up the tree to the very top branches. Feel yourself merging quietly with the sap and experience its slow, quiet flow all the way up and back down into the roots of the tree, which grounds you. Feel the roots going all the way down into the earth, where it is very kind and peaceful. Continue breathing slowly and rhythmically. Then bring the energy back up and into your body, filling and surrounding it with golden white light. This sounds very simplistic, but sometimes the simplest things are the most powerful. Combatting Cardiovascular Risk with Leech Therapy by Pavel Gershkovich

T

hick and sticky blood is not a good thing—it is a significant risk factor for heart disease and high blood pressure, and the modern American diet makes high blood viscosity commonplace. When the heart muscle contracts, it sends blood moving with some turbulence through the arteries. Thick and sticky red blood cells are abrasive and they rough up the inside of the artery walls. Nature dispatches cholesterol like a salve to patch the rough spots, so plaques form that in turn, narrow the arteries. Treatment using medicinal leeches, or hirudotherapy, has long been a

primary defense against heart disease because of its two-pronged approach. First, during leech therapy there is blood loss, which prompts the body to make lots of new blood cells, and younger red blood cells are more slippery and flexible; they can bend and fold themselves to make their way through the slender passages of the capillaries. Second, leeches secrete some very potent healing substances in their saliva. Particularly useful is the enzyme hirudin, which works like a holistic antibiotic and blood thinner in the human bloodstream. The many bio-active substances

leeches secrete are able to reduce the viscosity of the blood while simultaneously dilating the blood vessels, accelerating lymph flow, inhibiting platelet aggregation, reducing infection and exerting a local analgesic and anesthetic effect. Leeches have been in the medical toolkit for centuries. The treatment of heart disease, hypertension, varicose veins and hemorrhoids are well-established, traditional indications for leech therapy. Leeches have FDA approval as a medical device and are often used in operating rooms during reconstructive surgery, where surgeons rely on them to create microcirculation. As people better understand that drugs to inhibit the body’s ability to make cholesterol do not stop the forces which create heart disease, leech therapy is being seen by many as one of the strongest defensive moves an at-risk person can take. Modern Power Generation and Sustainability by Kena Fedorschak

E

lectricity plays a fundamental role in modern life. Current power generation systems, which rely heavily on fossil fuels and nuclear inputs, provide cheap and reliable electricity, but these technologies are ultimately unsustainable, because they rely on resources that will eventually be depleted. Moreover, the use of fossil fuels damages ecological systems and causes climate change (e.g., average global temperatures are climbing and some studies suggest that about one-quarter of the Earth’s mammal species may be extinct in the wild in 20 years). Ensur-

ing continued availability of power will require increased investment in renewable technologies. Fossil fuels, which include coal, petroleum (oil) and natural gas, are concentrated organic compounds that supply approximately 82 percent of energy consumed in the United States. The remnants of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago, fossil fuels are cheap and relatively abundant. Coal and natural gas are used most commonly for electricity generation—petroleum is mostly used for transportation. All fossil fuels produce greenhouse gases when consumed (e.g., burning coal releases sulfur dioxide, a compound which creates acid rain and particulate matter; fly ash, a particulate matter; mercury, an established neurotoxin; and carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas). Nuclear energy supplies approximately 8.5 percent of energy consumed in the United States, generated through induced fission—the decay of uranium atoms—and therefore produces no greenhouse gases. However, the volatility of the materials used presents numerous challenges. Active cooling processes chill vats of water where radioactive nuclear waste is stored. If water loss occurs within the pools or the cooling towers fail, massive amounts of radiation can potentially be released. While sufficient uranium exists to continue to last several hundred years, the lack of a permanent storage solution for nuclear waste is of grave concern. Given that fossil fuels and nuclear energy have adverse environmental impacts and will inevitably run out, 24

it is crucial that renewable energy technologies be developed to ensure a sustainable energy future. Renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, geothermal and biomass, provide a combined total of about 6.8 percent of energy consumed in the United States. Renewable technologies are characterized by their use of naturally replenished resources, zero emissions and low impact on other environmental systems. Wind power is generated using induction generators housed in the nacelle (area behind the blades) of a wind turbine. Wind turbines must be spaced apart and therefore require vast amounts of land, so they are ideal for non-contiguous installation. Solar power, which is generated using either thermal (heat) or photovoltaic (light) technologies, takes advantage of a nearly inexhaustible resource; solar incidence on the Earth each day is about 15,000 times the entire energy needs of the planet. Enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), in which power is generated by fracturing hot rock deep underground, drilling injection/production wells, pumping liquids down into the Earth and using the resulting steam to spin a turbine and generate, electricity can provide continuous power with virtually zero emission. Biomass energy is generated through the controlled burning of lumber mill waste, sustainably harvested wood and forest residues, and

clean municipal or industrial waste, etc. Hydroelectric power, which provides about 2.6 percent of the total energy used in the United States, is often considered a renewable energy source as well. Debate exists because dams alter the ecological makeup of the downstream environment. Furthermore, storage lakes emit greenhouse gases. However, efficiencies associated with hydroelectric power generation are much higher than traditional power plants and unlike traditional power plants, hydroelectric facilities consume no water. Modern society consumes massive quantities of energy from nonrenewable sources that damage ecological systems. Ensuring future availability of sustainably produced electricity will necessitate increased investment in renewable technologies. Solar, wind, geothermal, biomass and hydroelectricity can be expanded to provide clean energy for a growing planet. A shift in thought is required to ensure continued prosperity and well-being of future generations; sustainable practices must be implemented on a broad scale. Kena Fedorschak co-founded the Honor Society for Sustainability at Arizona State University. He believes sustainable management practices can be implemented without negatively impacting the bottom line. Contact him at kfedorschak@ gmail.com.

COLORECTAL CANCER

Can be Prevented by Dr. Paul Stallone

C

olon cancer, or colorectal cancer (CC), is the third most common type of cancer in both males and females. There are close to 150,000 new cases each year in the United States, and more than 50,000 deaths. Some experts estimate 70 percent of CC could be prevented by changes in diet and nutrition alone. One study showed CC patients with the highest glycemic and carbohydrate intake had an 80 percent increased risk of CC recurrence or death compared with those that had the lowest levels. Studies are looking into the real possibility of the growing cases of CC being related to rising obesity rates. With all the research showing the significant increase of cancer recurrence with an unhealthy diet, it’s no surprise that studies also prove certain diets have a direct impact on people

developing cancer in the first place. Processed food consumption not only adds inches to the waist, it initiates a biological reaction upon entering the body. Fried and hydrogenated foods modify cell structure, which can lead to damage of cellular DNA, a precursor to cancer. Refined carbohydrates and sugars increase insulin production and blood glucose levels, which can lead to conditions like diabetes. Sugars and carbs provide outstanding fuel for cancer cell growth. Red meat and processed meats like hot dogs, salami, deli meat and bacon elevate levels of N-nitroso compounds, a matter found within the large colon. The danger comes from the compound adhering to DNA, thereby increasing the odds of the cell developing a mutation. Just as an unhealthy diet may contribute to cancer, a healthy diet

may help prevent it. The fiber found in fresh fruits and vegetables may drastically reduce the chance of CC. Fiber is exceedingly important when it comes to colon health, because it bulks up stool and gives the colon something to move out. Fiber also attracts toxins and other waste material that the body needs to eliminate. Without fiber, stool can sit for days or longer in the colon, and having toxic material waiting in the colon provides opportunity for cancer to thrive. Broccoli is considered by many to be the number one food for cancer prevention. Uncooked broccoli contains two of the most powerful anti-cancerous compounds, diinodylmethane and sulforaphane, which can effectively suppress tumor growth. Raw to lightly cooked broccoli can provide the daily recommended amount of vitamin C, 20 percent of daily dietary fiber, and is an excellent source of vitamins A, E and K. Sweet potatoes are abundant in complex carbohydrates,

dietary fiber, beta carotene, vitamin C and E, pantothenic acid and manganese. High intake of these antioxidants, vitamins and minerals aid in regularity, which helps reduce the colon’s exposure to toxins. Sweet potatoes also contain phytosterols, a nutrient known for its defense against CC. Fermented, but unprocessed, foods like sauerkraut and Greek yogurt contain probiotics, the beneficial bacteria essential for overall health. Good flora prevents the colonization of potential pathogens, the “bad” bacteria. It’s very important to choose a high-quality yogurt if using it in the prevention of disease. Commercial yogurt may contain as much sugar as a can of soda, as well as artificial coloring and preservatives, which may not be as healthy as we thought. CC is considered by many experts as a silent killer, because most patients are non-symptomatic, which allows the disease to metastasize to areas outside the colon before treatment can begin. Those needing immediate prevention or even treatment for cancer are urged to consult with an experienced naturopathic physician as part of their cancer care. Natural therapies are a great adjunct to conventional treatment and are incredibly successful with addressing cancer during any stage. Even if cancer has not been confirmed, a naturopathic physician can make recommendations for daily choices that could help prevent disease, the best way to treat a patient.

divine energy to physical form, I realized I could dress my client’s spirits, as well as their surfaces.” Fashion Feng Shui, Maggiore’s international corporate legacy, maintains that combining intention and the five elements with awareness of our personal style attracts what we desire. Holistic image and lifestyle consultant and lead trainer Andréa Dupont, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, states that the first step is discovering our “essence”, or primary element. “You can’t dress yourself until you know yourself. I ask clients, ‘If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?’ Once we establish an individual’s inner strengths and core element, the results can be life changing.”

aking up on the morning of a big presentation to secure city funding for a new park, you’re confident that you’ve done your homework: You’ve prepared handouts, memorized key points of an environmental impact study and lined up community supporters. Opening the closet presents a different kind of challenge: What’s the most effective way to dress?

Dressing Our Essence

For Denise Medved, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, owner of Feng Shui Style, wardrobe consciousness shows respect for our individuality and the environment. “When I choose to dress in natural fibers such as cottons, leathers, silks or wools, or their vegan complements in manmade fibers, it represents the life force of plants and animals and builds qi, or energy,” says Medved. She suggests assembling an outfit embracing three of the five elements. “A water/wood/fire triad might be black, woven, silk trousers; an organic, cotton, floral print shirt; and a red, recycled wool jacket. Personalizing this with the surprise of grandmother’s yellow stone pin on the lapel adds creative flair and earth and metal elements.” Nature’s jewelry energizes and circulates qi.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Practicing the three basic tenets of sustainability together with principles of feng shui keeps our wardrobe and closet resonating with life. Consultants agree that a wardrobe representing the five elements allows endless possibilities of creative combinations and reduces the need for having to keep up with new fashion trends. Shopping for such treasures at consignment and thrift stores, plus estate sales, allows us to reuse and repurpose clothing, energizing our budgets, closets and attitudes. Recycling items that pack closets and no longer suit our needs frees space and energy to create a wardrobe that is authentically ours. The Practical Encyclopedia of Feng Shui, by Gill Hale, also contains helpful advice for bringing out an intended inner message and making a statement. The color green conveys the wood element, or individuals that are public spirited and energetic. Red suggests fire, the color of inspiring leaders. Supportive and loyal earth personalities gravitate to khaki, while resolute, metal people may select grey. Natural communicators that view life holistically will be reflected in the water element of black. A feng shui philosophy provides guidelines for living in harmony with the natural world and in conscious awareness of life. Each choice expresses a stylistic living intention that will be noticed by the world.

Wardrobe consultants that apply the principles of feng shui to clothing believe the jacket we choose to wear carries as much impact as our words. Clothing pieces and accessories selected with conscious awareness and intention can bring us into harmony and balance, energize our life and transmit subconscious messages about our values. Feng shui clothing stylists believe the five elements of nature—wood, fire, earth, metal and water—connect in an unending cycle of harmony that keeps the world in balance. Following an authentic and harmonious lifestyle connects us with this cycle and the environment in a more natural balance of human motion and planetary sustainability. As pioneering stylist Evana Maggiore observed in Fashion Feng Shui: The Power of Dressing with Intention, “I came to the conclusion that clothing is your body’s most intimate environment and energetically influences your life in the same way that your home and business décors do. Body coloring and shape, style, personality, lifestyle, goals and clothing design can align perfectly with the colors, shapes, substances and en- Gail Condrick is an archetypal consultant and Nia Techergies of feng shui’s five elements. igital infrared thermal imaging (DITI) and breast health are topics of interest as we learn about the challenges the medical community is facing with X-ray-based mammogram issues of radiation damage, false positives and effectiveness in catching problems early enough. DITI was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1982 as a valuable adjunct to mammograms and does not subject the patient to any discomfort or harmful radiation. Cancer needs oxygen to grow, meaning it needs more blood supply. Cancerous cells emit a protein to stimulate angiogenesis, or new capillary growth. The increased blood flow raises the temperature around the cancer, which is detected by a thermal camera. The initial images serve as a benchmark for comparison over time, just as a mammogram does, but there is zero exposure to ionizing radiation and no risk of compression that may cause cancer cells to spread. These images are then read and analyzed by highly trained and certified reading doctors that prepare a detailed report for the patient and the patient’s primary care doctor. to?” pushed Teague to take a leap of faith—close her psychotherapy practice and enroll in a filmmaking class. Teague recognizes that a deeper wisdom activated her response. She observes, “The individuals I was counseling about their restless desire for something better mirrored my own discontent, and my restlessness was an emotional response to what was emerging. “Today, I no longer concern myself with making the right decision. I trust that whatever the circumstances are, I need to listen, observe and reflect, because ‘now’ contains information for my next step,” she advises. Amanda Owen, counselor, coach and author of Born to Receive: 7 Powerful Steps Women Can Take Today to Reclaim Their Half of the Universe, has studied the state of receptivity that Teague references. Owen explains, “Receiving is a dynamic and productive state. When the body is relaxed and the mind and nervous system are calm, we become receptive and can feel and intuit subtle information contained in the energy received from external and internal environments.

Trust Your Intuition Listen to that Still, Small Voice and Let it Lead You by Linda Sechrist

What if you could consistently tap into answers to life’s problems when you need them, knowing deep down that you are on the right track and that the decisions and choices you are making are the correct ones?

O

ur body is a wellspring of priceless wisdom. Yet heeding our innate voice seems constantly tested as society distracts us with the busy acquisition of external knowledge and rewards more visible work. Those used to focusing outwardly over-stimulate their five senses and so tend to disconnect from their body’s deep innate intelligence—our sixth sense, also known as intuition. The resulting joylessness, discontent, isolation, depression and illness have sent millions in search of a real solution that discerning experts believe already exists within. Our ultimate guide to the fountain of personal health and happiness, they believe, could well be our own intuition.

Changing Directions

For years, Katie Teague, producer of the documentary film, Money & Life, lived with the consequence of sublimating her intuitive impulse. “I felt a restless itch in my soul,” relates Teague, who intuited that life was prompting her to change careers so she could use her talents in a more meaningful way. The vision of her 94-year-old self lying on her deathbed and faced with the question, “What are you not saying yes 32

“Our parasympathetic nervous system is engaged when we’re in this listening state. In contrast, rushing through the day engages our ‘fight-or-flight’ sympathetic nervous system. Busyness and mind chatter drowns out the valuable information that intuition provides,” Owen notes. An intuitive energy therapist, Marilyn Eppolite strongly relies on intuitive guidance in her southern New Jersey practice, believing it emanates from her body’s intelligence. “I listen and it’s always present,” she says. Eppolite shares an example of a time she received a clear image and perceived the bodily sensations of a grieving small child from a female client that a psychotherapist had referred. “When I described what I was sensing, her tears flowed and she also connected to the feeling,” she says. “It provided the needed breakthrough she needed to access her feelings and move forward in therapy.” Eppolite is keenly aware when roadblocks—busyness, willfulness and a fearful, restless mind—create interference. “These feed each other and can rarely be separated. I can’t hear or feel my intuition when my energy and attention are willfully directed outward,” she observes. Abandoning the drive for personal control and surrendering to stillness is how Eppolite signals her body’s intelligence that she’s ready for whispers of guidance. “I sense that surrender as strength and trust that the information received is for my greatest good, even if I don’t fully understand it,” she remarks. “Discernment is necessary because deep wisdom frequently comes in segments that I must piece together and put into action before more of it

bubbles up from within.” The teachings of Yogeshwari Kamini Desai, Ph.D., combine Western psychology and Eastern philosophy. As the director of education and lead teacher of the Amrit Method of Yoga, at the facility in Silver Springs, Florida, Desai instructs on listening to the voice of intuition identified as prana in yogic tradition, which she characterizes as “the energy that enlivens and carries out all balancing and life-giving processes in nature. “It speaks through the body as sensations, impulses and urges,” she says. “This ‘inner divining rod’ informs us what feelings, thoughts and actions are moving us into alignment with our source and what is moving us out of alignment.” Quieting the mind and strengthening the directives of prana through meditation, yoga and being in nature moves us away from what we tell ourselves and back to directly responding to its promptings. “Absorbed in the present moment and bodily sensations, we connect with inner guidance,” explains Desai. “With practice, our mind becomes a servant to inner intelligence. It can both direct our lives and make us sensitive to early symptoms suggesting oncoming illness,” she adds. “There is growing interest in energy medicine and developing a deeper connection to the body’s intelligence through yoga and energy practices like qigong and tai chi because people are tired of taking medications that don’t heal the root cause of health problems,”

INTUITION UNLEASHED Spend time with your feelings: Write down how you feel about your job, relationships, house, health and what’s going on in the world. Build and strengthen feeling receptors: Choose one feeling and spend the day with it. Notice every time you see that feeling expressed in yourself or someone else. Don’t judge it or form an opinion about it; just notice. Receive everything: Pay attention to what you are feeling. Don’t worry about what you will do with what you feel or your thoughts about those feelings. Just receive them. You can decide later what you want to do with them. Maintain a flexible “thermostat”: When you want to freak out or shut down, check in with your feelings instead. Be present, engaged and genuine. The feeling and associated intuition need your attention and the present is the time to attend to them. Source: Adapted from Born to Receive, by Amanda Owen natural awakenings

comments Dr. Sue Morter, founder of Morter Health Center, near Indianapolis, Indiana, and the healing phenomenon she terms Energy Codes. A regular practice of any one of these disciplines expands sensory function to encompass internal recognition and referencing of subtle information. Morter teaches how to awaken gut feelings, personal power and self-love to restore wholeness left behind in pursuit of external sources of happiness. “Participants learn to trust their gut more than the opinions of others, which turns up the volume on the whispers of intuition,” she explains. After Pat Hall, a therapeutic bodyworker in Augusta, Georgia, read Jill Bolte Taylor’s My Stroke of Insight, she was certain a habit of listening to mental chatter interfered with feeling and interpreting her body’s helpful promptings. “Jill’s experience of her body as energy and her mind as silent when the left lobe of her brain shut down due to a stroke was my ‘Aha!’ moment,” says Hall. For her, heeding inner guidance took practice and a commitment to dismantling reactive thought patterns and habits, plus discerning between intuition and distracting chatter. “Mind chatter generally creates fear, negativity and pressure to do something,” she explains. “Intuitive guidance is gentle, expansive and undemanding.” Hall believes in the Buddhist concept that mindfulness of the body allows us to love fully. She finds, “It brings healing, wisdom and freedom.” She relates how she is led to direct a client’s attention to their own body’s intuition, which works best when she is following her instincts, rather than thinking. “After one session, my client, who had been silently experiencing numerous feelings in her stomach, asked me why I had touched her abdomen. I was just intuitively led to that part of her body.” Dr. Mona Lisa Schulz, also a Ph.D., medical intuitive and co-author of All is Well, notes that everyone has a connection to intuition. “We get a gut feeling and sadness in our heart from our inner intelligence that we don’t know what to do with. While some individuals consult a practitioner, others listen to their body’s intuitive language and reflect on their insights and dreams— the language of soul,” says Schulz. “Intuition can speak softly through symptoms,” she observes. “Eventually, when disregarded, it can become a full-blown illness.” Biochemist and author of Secrets of Our Cells: Discovering Your Body’s Inner Intelligence, Sondra Barrett, Ph.D., is awed by the body’s cellular intelligence. “Our cells are invisible, so we don’t think of ourselves as cellular beings. However, a deeper understanding of our constitution and that our cells speak to each other and collaborate harmoniously could inspire us to befriend our body’s intelligence for life,” she says. “We might shift from wanting to fix an ache or pain to understanding that our cells are warning us of something.” Sonia Choquette, a global consultant who recommends we rely on our sixth sense as our first sense, has authored several books on intuition. Funny Tummy?

Probiotic Foods Can Fix a Troubled Gut by Kathleen Barnes

Gas, bloating, stomach cramps, diarrhea and constipation—each of these digestive issues indicates an imbalance of “good” and “bad” intestinal bacteria.

C

hronic digestive discomfort is distressingly common. More than 60 million Americans suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), notes Dr. Mark Pimentel, director of the Gastrointestinal Motility Program at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, in Los Angeles, and author of A New IBS Solution. Many are too embarrassed to mention it to their doctor, so they suffer silently and learn to live with it.

Multiple Culprits

While digestive distress can visit most of us occasionally, regular bouts have increased due to high-stress lifestyles and unhealthy diets, according to Dr. Dustin James, a St. Louis, Missouri, gastroenterologist and author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Digestive Health. “Getting home late after a stressful day, eating a

36

NaturalAZ.com

high-fat meal and then going to bed is a recipe for problems,” he says. James advises a food-free interlude of four to six hours before bedtime and notes that prescription and over-the-counter heartburn medications can actually worsen the problem over time. Pimentel, citing his own research, also suggests that even a minor case of food poisoning may unbalance digestive bacteria enough to cause problems for years. “We think food poisoning leads to bacterial overgrowth,” says Pimentel. In his clinical experience, James says about 10 percent of IBS cases can be connected to the food poisoning theory. Although such cases are typically treated with an antibiotic, rifaximin, many experts ironically at-

tribute bacterial overgrowth to the use of antibiotics. All antibiotics, taken for any reason, indiscriminately kill both good and bad intestinal bacteria, ultimately creating unbalanced bacteria colonies in the digestive tract, says James. “There can be bad long-term effects,” he advises. James’ antibiotics theory is affirmed by a major Australian review of current research on the links between antibiotics and intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Sugar is another culprit as are antibiotics in dairy products and meats, which can also aggravate digestive

problems. Sugar feeds the growth of unfriendly bacteria and yeast and antibiotics kill friendly bacteria, contributing to imbalances. The U.S. obesity epidemic has even been linked to digestive problems. In a study published in the journal Frontiers of Public Health, researchers at the University of California-Berkeley warn against longterm exposure to antibiotics through their widespread use in the dairy and meat industries. One animal study from Washington University, in St. Louis, showed that intestinal bacteria tend to extract more nutrients—and more calories—from the same foods when eaten by obese animals than when ingested by thinner ones. This helps explain why obese people tend to stay obese without heroic measures.

Good Food Solutions

There is considerable agreement that probiotics—live bacteria such as those contained in fermented foods like quality yogurt—help rebalance beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract and ease ailments that include IBS. Due to U.S. food regulations, yogurt

is routinely pasteurized, which kills its probiotic benefits; conscientious suppliers then add active digestive microorganisms, like Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, back into their products. “Check yogurt labels for specific names of the species and a certification that it contains live cultures,” counsels Maria Marco, Ph.D., an assistant professor of food science at the University of California-Davis. Coconut yogurt may be preferred by those with dairy-free diets. Dairy is acid-forming and can be difficult to digest. Many fermented foods can provide the same probiotics to ease digestive woes and restore a healthy balance of the right bacteria. Sauerkraut, rich in Lactobacillus and other strains of healthy bacteria, is at the top of the list. It’s easy to make super-healthy sauerkraut at home with shredded organic cabbage and salt. Other fermented foods to put high on a natural probiotic list include: miso, kefir, tempeh, soft cheese, kimchi, sour pickles and sourdough bread.

James recommends two daily servings of high-quality yogurt or other fermented foods to obtain the 2 to 5 billion live bacteria needed to restore gut health. “Every human is unique; try different products in search of what works,” he says. Probiotic supplements may be more effective for people with serious digestive distress that need higher bacterial counts and the product label may provide specifics of the bacteria and strains. “For example, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG is a strain that has been proven to be effective against antibiotic-induced diarrhea,” Marco explains. High-quality probiotics usually require refrigeration to keep the bacteria alive. In addition, there are many nonfermented foods, including certain juices, candies and energy bars, with specific strains of bacteria added that have probiotic effects. key factor in achieving optimum wellness and health is a properly functioning gastrointestinal (GI) or digestive system. Any program or attempt to maintain optimum health can be completely undermined by a poorly functioning GI tract. Improper digestion leads to poor absorption of nutrients and constant irritation of the GI lining, which can result in nutritional deficiencies that may or may not be expressed by outward symptoms for years until significant illness and disease are present. Hidden subclinical GI tract problems can interfere with proper digestion. Gluten, found in grains like wheat, rye, barley and hops, causes inflammation, and that is why it has had much so publicity. Other common foods that can cause sensitivity reactions include dairy, eggs, tomatoes and corn. Inflammatory reactions from ingesting these foods in someone that is intolerant may cause joint pain, arthritic conditions, skin problems, bloating, swelling, gas and indigestion. Our stomach utilizes two substances for breaking food down: enzymes and acid. With the intake of poor food choices such as processed, packaged foods, trans fats, fried and fast foods, our ability to produce digestive enzymes decreases significantly. Low enzyme and low acid production provide the opportunity for harmful organisms like yeast, parasites and bad bacteria to proliferate. Dr. Jim Handzel focuses on chiropractic care and functional medicine at Mind, Body and Flow, in Chandler. See ad on page 36.

Why Quinoa Qualifies as a Superfood by Kelly Moran

Q

uinoa [KEEN-wah] is an ancient grain known as a pseudo-cereal, from the Andean region of Ecuador, Columbia, Peru and Bolivia and is now grown in small crops around the United States. From ancient to modern times, quinoa has served a variety of uses such as hot cereal, flour, animal feed, medicinal purposes, worship rituals and industrial applications. Quinoa has rightfully developed a reputation as a superfood, supplying significant quantities of essential vitamins and minerals, including manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, folate and copper. A cup of cooked quinoa also contains eight grams of complete protein and five grams of fiber. Quinoa is gluten-free, easy to prepare and extremely versatile. One cup of quinoa is 220 calories, which makes it a light, low-calorie dish eaten by itself or added to a meal. Quinoa also contains the phytonutrients quercitin and kaempferol, phytonutrients that aid in tissue repair, as well as fight off disease and infection. Quinoa has 2.75 mg of iron per cup and is recommended for people that suffer from anemia or eat vegetarian and vegan diets. Quinoa has a large amount of calcium in comparison to most grains. For example, quinoa has twice the amount of calcium as whole wheat, ounce-for-ounce. In the embryo of the quinoa seed there is a high concentration of protein: up to 45 percent. Quinoa contains twice as much fiber as almost every other grain, which helps lower cholesterol, won’t raise blood sugar and can help diabetics lose weight. Quinoa is a great source of B vitamins that help with energy production for brain and muscle cells. Quinoa can be added to any type of salad, casserole or cereal. To cook quinoa, add one part

of the grain to two parts liquid in a saucepan. After the mixture is brought to a boil, reduce the heat to simmer and cover. One cup of quinoa cooked in this method usually takes 15 minutes to prepare. When cooking is complete, the grains become translucent and the white germ will have partially detached itself, appearing like a white-spiraled tail. For the quinoa to have a nuttier flavor, dry roast it before cooking by placing it in a skillet over medium-low heat and stirring constantly for five minutes. Quinoa is a perfect food to

include on a gluten-free diet, because it not only lacks gluten, but doesn’t belong to the same plant family as wheat, oats, barley or rye. Some studies also show quinoa flour to have higher digestibility than gluten grains. While it is possible to make baked goods and pastas out of 100 percent quinoa flour, most companies combine quinoa flour with tapioca flour, rice flour or oatmeal to produce a lighter texture. Products made with 100 percent quinoa flour typically have a heavy, dense texture, sometimes referred to as “truffle-like”. For industrial use, quinoa starch has excellent stability in freeze/thaw conditions. Quinoa starch could provide a great substitute to other chemically modified starches because of the small size of its grain; for example, in aerosol production, pulps, copy paper, dessert foods, excipients in the plastics industry, talcs and anti-offset powders. There is currently a need for highquality foods in starving countries, and quinoa is a great source to help undernourished children and pregnant women; adding quinoa to their dishes supplements their nutritional protein needs. In 2013, the United Nations declared the “International Year of Quinoa.” Kelly Moran is a native to Arizona majoring in nutrition communication at Arizona State University.

Save energy. Live healthier. Reduce expenses. Those are the goals of our special advertising section, Your Green Home Guide, appearing in the next few issues. Natural Awakenings is proud to share information from leading local resources dedicated to helping you integrate sustainability and healthy living into your home.

Stop Wasting Energy and Start Saving Today! by Kirsten Shaw

T

he cheapest, most abundant and most reliable source of new energy available is tapping into the energy we waste every day. Most of us pay attention to some of the ways energy gets wasted in our homes. We remind our children to turn off the lights and our husbands to close the doors. We wash our clothes in cold water and turn up the thermostat a degree or two in the summer. How we live in our homes impacts the energy we use, as well as the comfort and health of our homes. But there are features of our homes that can be wasting energy no matter how 40

careful we are. There are several steps to take to make your home energy efficient; some steps are baby steps and then there are a few giant steps that also provide giant returns in comfort, health and energy efficiency. One of the first baby steps to take is to replace any incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent lights or LED lights. This not only reduces wasted energy for light, but also reduces air conditioning costs. Incandescent lights get very hot. Remember the Easy-Bake oven in which you baked your first cake? It used an incandescent light bulb to heat the “oven.” You can take lighting to the next level and install occupancy sensors that turn lights on when a room is entered and off when the room has been empty for several minutes. Also, you can use the lighting dimmers when your light switches have that feature. Next, replace showerheads with high-efficiency ones. If you change a two-gallon per minute showerhead with a one-gallon per minute one, you will save energy two different ways. You save hot water, and you save cold water! When you save any water you are saving energy. It takes a lot of energy to treat and transport the water before it gets to your home. Keep equipment that uses power clean and in good repair. Vacuum the coils of your refrigerator. The dust buildup keeps the coils from releasing heat removed from the refrigerator. Get your heating and air conditioning system serviced and maintained every year. If the compressor for your AC is on the ground in your yard, keep it free of leaves, toys and tools. It needs free moving air around it to work properly. A bigger step to take if you have a pool is to replace the single speed pool pump with a variable speed pump.

A pool cover will reduce water loss to evaporation, too. The first giant step in making your home energy efficient, healthy and comfortable is to get a comprehensive home energy assessment, sometimes called an energy audit. A certified and experienced energy auditor uses diagnostic testing to measure how leaky your home is and where the biggest leaks are. Ducts are also tested for leaks, as well as for static pressure. The insulation in your attic is carefully evaluated to determine if it is installed correctly, and if there are sufficient levels. Your water heater and appliances are inspected, and if any are combustion appliances, then combustion safety tests are also performed. Even a small leak from the attic can be a big energy waster. One of the most common holes from an attic into a home is recessed can lights. Many can lights are vented so that the light housing does not overheat and cause a fire. But the vents allow hot, dusty attic air to infiltrate into the kitchen, family room or bedroom, wherever the light is. Another serious energy waster is a leaky duct. One sign of leaky ducts is a build-up of dust around a supply register, or inside the return duct where the filter is placed.

In addition to stopping air flow from leaks, stopping heat flow with properly installed insulation is a critical step to energy efficiency. A common insulation problem found during energy audits is fiberglass batt insulation suspended between rafters instead of down on the ceiling. The insulation needs to be in full contact with the drywall ceiling to work properly. Insulation draped over the rafter is as effective as putting your sleeping bag on top of your tent when you want to stay warm camping. When the testing and inspections are completed, then the certified energy auditor uses the data in energy modeling software to determine what will be the most costeffective improvements for your home. But a quality energy consultant also looks for ways to improve the indoor air and comfort, not just reduce your monthly utility bill. The experienced, certified professionals at Advanced Energy Efficiency & Environmental Quality help you stay on track when you are ready to take those giant steps making your home energy efficient. Getting a Handle on Home Toxicity by Valerie Tourangeau

H

omes can be measured in many ways—square footage, number of bedrooms and energy efficiency, yet one important factor that is rarely considered is health. Most products are tested for toxicity, not the ability to create a healthy environment. Though the green movement does address indoor air quality, there are still steps to be taken to make green truly healthy for everyone. As green homes begin to entice buyers, we need to consider how healthy many green products are. Here are a few examples of when green may not be healthy. Artificial turf is gaining popularity in Arizona because it is considered green. It saves water and is made from recyclable materials. Unfortunately there are health concerns such as: • The hazardous chemicals used during manufacturing contribute to environmental health concerns. • The padding, crumb rubber, can contain volatile organic compounds (VOC) and may release chemicals like arsenic, cadmium, lead and nickel as it deteriorates. • Children playing on the field may be exposed to lead dust from worn turf fibers that get onto their hands or toys.

46

Phoenix

NaturalAZ.com

• Natural grass filters air and water pollutants; artificial turf does not. • Real grass provides a cooling surface, whereas artificial turf heats up and may be a breeding ground for bacteria. The concentrations that leach out are not believed to be significant risks to the environment, but data is lacking and there are gaps in the science. There are “healthier” artificial turf products available, but there is little knowledge about the new chemicals used in these products. Other examples include: • CFL lights, which contain mercury, can be highly toxic if not cleaned up properly when broken. Burnedout lights must be disposed of at a toxic waste facility not available in many small cities.

• Triclosan found its way into many green products such as flooring and paint to name a few, in products named Microban. Triclosan is being phased out due to health and environmental concerns. Microban may be unnecessary, as it is erroneously thought to protect the user, when it is actually intended to protect the product. • Nanotechnology is the new kid on the green building block. Environmental and health concerns have plagued the nanotechnology industry though; with no labeling laws governing its use, it is difficult to tell where it is being used. Some LED lights are using this technology already. Is there anything we can do to safeguard our families? As a nation, we are getting sicker—asthma, cancer rates and other disease are on the rise. The one place we should feel safe is in our own homes. Research products, demand full disclosure and ask questions about the entire process, from manufacturing to installation. Only the consumer can reverse this toxic trend. If you want a healthy home, you must demand healthy products. Valerie Tourangeau is a certified EcoBroker Realtor with Keller Williams East Valley with a background in permaculture and building biology. and my family?” We don’t give enough credit to having great girlfriends. I don’t mean people you go to lunch with—I mean real allies. People that give you good advice and are strong for you, that will take your kids and you’ll take theirs. I think that is an underutilized tool. I always encourage women to approach life with a strategy and use each other to help navigate it, because that makes it a little easier.

Volleying Life Gabrielle Reece on Her Balancing Act

Which role is most important to you and where does selfcare fit in?

by Christine MacDonald

G

abrielle Reece has been called one of the world’s most influential women in sports and one of its most beautiful athletes. In her 20s, she built a career as both a fiercely competitive pro volleyball player and a fashion model. Since then, she’s written books and become an expert on women’s peak fitness and overall well-being, all while raising three daughters with her husband, Hawaiian surfer Laird Hamilton. Plus, she volunteers for environmental organizations such as the National Resources Defense Council and RainCatcher, a nonprofit bringing safe drinking water to people in need.

How do you find time for and balance all the roles you play in life—athlete, spouse, parent, businesswoman and volunteer?

Juggling life is hard for everyone. Living day-to-day, taking care of kids and paying bills is a challenge. There are ways to make it all more manageable, but for me, there is a level of discomfort, challenge and difficulty, as well as moments of joy. I think women are sometimes thrown offbalance by some difficulty, instead of saying, “OK, how am I going to strategize and make it all work for me

At this time in my life, being a mother is the most important. When my girls are older and more independent, then their demands on my time will lessen. But I don’t think I’d ever blindly put one role over the other, because they are all connected. I just approach them with different parts of my personality. My work is intellectual, while being a mom is instinctual. Being in a relationship is a whole other ball of wax that I approach with the same diligence. Taking care of myself is at the center because I wouldn’t be able to do anything successfully if I am not well myself.

With your busy schedule, how do you find time to work out and stay in shape?

I think it’s been about momentum. I had the good fortune of training and eating well since I went off to play volleyball in college. That sort of steam made it easier as I added work, a partner and children. I think it’s more difficult for women that don’t have that experience. When they enter “the real world” and add a big career or long hours, a partner or family, it becomes difficult to establish that grounding in healthy practices. You have to create the environment in which you are going to succeed. That takes years. At some point, you have to be honest with yourself. For me, I know I won’t get exercise or anything else done if I stay home. There are some things I can go to a gym to do that I can also do at home but know I won’t, so it’s about creating an environment that activates good intentions.

How do you choose to expend your volunteer efforts? Laird and I are usually quick to be on board with anything that involves the environment and people. These causes are near and dear to everybody, but make special sense for us, given the amount of time we have lived and worked outside.

As a mother, do you feel a special concern for being a good environmental steward? I felt this way even before I had children because I had the luxury of playing beach volleyball. I grew up in the Caribbean and have always tried to be a benefactor of the beautiful outdoors. It adds another layer of motivation when you start thinking about your kids and the opportunities they will or will not have in their future. In Hawaii, the Polynesians traditionally didn’t believe in ownership, but in being stewards of an area. That’s how I feel about the place where we live now. The ultimate for me would be to leave it better than I found it. Christine MacDonald is a freelance journalist in Washington, D.C., whose specialties include health and science. Women’s Wellness

Often Misunderstood by Dr. Linda Khoshaba

W

hen it comes to women’s wellness, self-care is a crucial topic to discuss. Women play many roles, including mothers, sisters, wives and daughters. No matter what part they play, it can be demanding and taxing to their mental, physical and spiritual well-being. Women have a natural motherly and nurturing

50

Phoenix

disposition, and these characteristics can make them susceptible to neglect self-care because they are preoccupied with taking caring of others. Self-care means taking time to meditate, sing, dance and laugh, physical care such as getting a manicure or pedicure, getting in tune with their inner self and pursuing preventative

health. These practices are essential for a healthy overall well-being, even though they may seem impossible to fit into a daily routine or schedule. Just starting with baby steps and incorporating small aspects of self-care into daily life can have dramatic impacts on wellness. If women make themselves a priority, they can enhance their relationships with others, improve the quality of their careers and strengthen their abilities to deal with stress. Here are three easy steps that can start enhancing self-care: Make a list of things you enjoy: It is always nice to remind ourself of what makes us happy in life. Journaling is a great way to collect thoughts and ideas, and the process of putting these words on paper can begin to make them reality. This exercise can help us focus on what makes us smile and can facilitate self-care to become a regular practice. For example, if we love to sing, we should write down how singing makes us feel and visualize ourself doing it. Our emotions are powerful motivators that can help us achieve our self-care goals. Take action: Now that we have visualized what makes us happy, reflect on what small choices we can make on a daily basis that will allow us to practice some form of self-care. Perhaps we can choose to take a walk after dinner every night, use five minutes to engage in a breathing exercise

or sing on the way to work. Whatever we decide, we need to keep ourselves accountable, and this will help us succeed. We can download mobile applications that remind us to check in with ourself or set alarms to begin taking action. We can also reach out to friends or family members to help us stay accountable. We needn’t be afraid to ask for help. Minimize distractions: Women are often multitasking and feel they must do everything on their own. This can lead them to become distracted, because they are attending to the needs of someone else. It is OK to say no to certain projects, appointments and expectations. We can focus on making ourself a priority. Why not? Go ahead and schedule a ladies night out with friends and remember to laugh, it’s great medicine. In the last 100 years, women’s roles have changed significantly. There are more pressures for women to act as loving partners, mothers and household providers, so self-care could not be more critical than any other time in history. Dr. Linda Khoshaba received a doctorate from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. Her main areas of focus include women’s health, pediatric medicine, diabetes management and prolotherapy. Maximize Your Fertility Hormone Balance by Dr. Marianne Marchese

T

rouble conceiving can put strain on a relationship and become the source of heartache, stress and unexpected medical expense. Infertility is a rising problem. It is estimated that greater than one in six couples in the U.S. have impaired fertility. Problems can be linked to men’s hormones and sperm abnormalities, as well as female health concerns. Couples should start early to maximize their fertility by seeing a doctor and evaluating hormones, checking for systemic conditions such as hypothyroidism and screening for exposure to environmental chemicals. Stress management is important for both men and women, because stress has a negative effect on hormones and fertility. Many factors account for fertility problems in couples; 35 to 40 percent are due to male factor problems, 35 to 40 percent are due to female factors and 20 to 30 percent are due to a combination of male and female factors. Some problems with fertility are unexplained.

52

Phoenix

NaturalAZ.com

Female Pelvic factors include infection: pelvic inflammatory disease, STIs, endometritis; prior surgery: D&C, appendicitis, fibroids, endometriosis, adnexal surgery; contraception and pregnancy history: hormones, DES exposure, miscarriage; and menstrual cycle issues: metorrhagia, menorrhagia, endometriosis, pelvic pain. Ovulatory factors include secondary amenorrhea; abnormal uterine bleeding; luteal phase defect; premature ovarian failure; polycystic ovarian syndrome; elevated prolactin; hypothyroidism; and prior use of anti-estrogens (Lupron, Depo-Provera). Systemic factors include delayed childbearing; overweight or underweight; insulin resistance; kidney and liver disease; substance use (alcohol, marijuana, caffeine, tobacco); and malabsorption (celiac, IBD). Unexplained factors include environmental chemicals. Male Factors include low testosterone; low sperm count; primary hypogonadism; androgen insensitivity; cryptorchidism; medications; orchitis, including mumps orchitis; systemic disorder; thyroid disorder; testicular trauma/radiation; varicocele; chromosome defect; altered sperm transport; absent vas deferens or obstruction; epididymal absence or obstruction; erectile dysfunction; secondary hypogonadism; androgen excess state; and unexplained. Environmental factors account for most unexplained infertility and many of the health conditions listed above, including PCOS, endometriosis and hypthyroidism. Women and men are exposed to chemicals through food, water, air, cosmetics, lotions, plastic bottles and food storage containers. The most common chemicals linked to fertility problems in both men and women include cigarette smoke, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenols (PCB), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFO) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), fish consumption and mercury, bisphenol-a (BPA) and phthalates. Daily low-dose exposure to chemicals can build up in the body over a few days, weeks, months and years. Not

only do these chemicals affect men and women’s fertility, but if a couple conceives, these chemicals are passed in utero to the fetus, which studies have linked to autism, ADD, hyperactivity, cognitive and behavior problems. A couple should start preparing for pregnancy at least one year before beginning to conceive. Preconceptive counseling includes education on how to avoid hormone disrupting chemicals. Both men and women should complete an eight-week detoxification plan to remove chemicals from the body to balance hormones and minimize exposure to the fetus. There are many naturopathic treatment options available to maximize fertility and treat both male and female factor infertility. Botanical medicine, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and homeopathy can improve all factors of fertility. Stress management, detoxification, exercise, lifestyle changes and nutrition should be incorporated into a plan, as well. It’s never too early or too late to incorporate naturopathic medicine into our life and balance our hormones. Dr. Marianne Marchese, author of 8 Weeks to Women’s Wellness, maintains a private practice in Phoenix and teaches gynecology at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. She was named Phoenix magazine’s Top Doctor in Naturopathic Medicine for 2014. For more information, visit DrMarchese.com. See ad on page 25.

omen are awakening to their natural connection to Mother Earth and all of her healing plants. In the past, women honored their unique intuition and were intimately connected with those subtle energies. Women have much to celebrate, including the ability to give life and nourish it. We are the caregivers of the Earth, as well as are all of her inhabitants, be it human, animal, plant or elements. The medicinal herbs of our Earth are simply part of who we are, who we have always been and who we will always be. Women are again beginning to feel this and coming en masse to reconnect with the art of herbal healing. The spirits of the plants have lain dormant deep in the recesses of our hearts, like a tiny ember at the bottom of a campfire, waiting for the winds of awakening to fan them to life once again. It is the time. Mother Earth hears our hearts and we are hearing hers. Listen to her and she will help return us to our true nature of radiant, feminine health. Let her guide us as we use the gifts of her simple herbs with honor and gratitude. Herbs are living medicines. Rich in rejuvenating nutrients, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and free radical scavengers, they work to rebalance our bodies, minds and spirits. Whole plant herbs are foods, and our bodies receive them as such. The completely absorbable nutrients are assimilated and metabolized and the waste eliminated just as with any food. These plants are true healing miracles. The endocrine (hormonal) system is one of the areas women are now working to rebalance, and of course the Earth has everything we need to do just that. Most of these herbs are simple, inexpensive and readily available to all of us, so let’s take a gentle walk on the Earth and meet a couple of our herbal allies. Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) – This amazing plant is a favorite among women throughout their lives. It works to calm the emotional

heart. If we are stressed, suffering from grief, panic or anxiety attacks or any other emotional imbalance, motherwort is there to help us move through it. Young women love motherwort to help bring on a delayed menstrual cycle and for PMS symptoms. Women in menopause use motherwort to help regulate mood swings and/or depression, ease hot flashes, calm heart palpations and balance hormones. Motherwort is also a gentle heart tonic that helps strengthen the organ and her bitter principles make her a great ally for digestive disorders. Because motherwort is so bitter, most women choose to use her in a liquid extract form (tincture). Traditional dosage is 15 to 20 drops twice a day or as needed. Chaste tree berries (Vitex agnus-castus) – A beautiful and ancient plant, chaste tree berries have a long history of balancing the ratio of the hormones estrogen and progesterone and helping the whole endocrine system to operate more efficiently. They are used in formulas for PMS, fibroids (ovaries and uterus), in the treatment of endometriosis and for irregular periods. For the post-menopausal woman, chaste tree berries are a wonder to help quell hot flashes. In addition, they promote abundant milk supply in a lactating mother. The traditional dosage of liquid extract (tincture) is one-half dropper full twice a day. These are just two of the thousands of healing plants waiting for us to hear their song again. Qigong Teachings on Fitness and Food Reaching Your Highest Energetic Potential in One Lifetime (Part 1 of 2) by Qigong Practitioner Jeff Primack

Q

igong is the art of harnessing qi (life force or vital energy) which directly affects blood flow and is an exercise that makes your blood pulse. This pulsing occurs by moving qi using specific breathing techniques along with postures and slow, graceful movements. Qigong also encompasses the use of healing foods, herbs, acupressure, and yogic stretches, all of which energize the body, increase vitality and accelerate metabolism. Qigong is circulation; the term “blood flow” is synonymous to “moving Qi”. Many studies confirm practicing Qigong reduces drug withdrawal in heroin addicts by 50 percent. Several Qigong instructors we’ve certified are teaching with huge success at Florida drug rehab clinics. Studies also reveal that Qigong boosts the immune system and is beneficial for those fighting cancer. Dr. Oz was quoted as saying 56

Phoenix

NaturalAZ.com

that if you want to live to be 100, do Qigong. These techniques originated over 3000 years ago with mountain wanderers, people who were activated by qi. Most acupuncturists are strong believers in Qigong, and some prescribe exercises to their patients for use in between treatments.

Qigong is different from yoga primarily because it requires slower, more gracious movements to harness your electromagnetic field. Some Qigong exercises build muscle or speed, but most are a pulsation of qi through the body. Qigong is the “sensation of energy” and is highly tangible. A few advanced systems of yoga, like Kriya Yoga, have striking similarities to Qigong. However, compared to most systems of yoga, Qigong has a much greater emphasis on precise breathing techniques. Qigong deals with smaller movements of the abdomen to circulate qi, and more precise movements of the hands, rooting into the earth and opening up pathways of energy. Yoga works with energy, but to a lesser degree, and although we practice and love yoga, Qigong does what yoga cannot. We train many thousands of yoga teachers and they are always blown away by the tangibility of qi experienced. Within 10 minutes of qi breathing, many feel electricity in their hands. “The Buzz”, as it is called in the Qigong family, is a reaction caused by increased levels of oxygen and ions, which I believe accelerates the vibration of our mitochondria. Many describe the inner buzzing or vibrational feeling as a natural high, and it has the obvious effect of stimulating endorphins. Many people describe “perma-grin” where the gratitude is so overwhelming and the joy so potent

— Advertisment —

that they can’t stop smiling for a short time. One Qigong student taking Xanax bars from his doctor several times a day to stay functional reported that after the Breath Empowerment he was more relaxed than any time in his life. This man later used his God-given breath and willpower to wean off Xanax and back into his natural state.

“Food & Fitness Revolution” Qigong Practitioner Jeff Primack and 100 instructors from around the USA will be present to assist. Phoenix Convention Center June 14-17 • 800-298-8970 QiGong.com. See ad Page 5.

Qigong is best in the morning as a practice to extend life and beauty. For days when time is short I recommend cleansing your body with oxygen and energy first thing in the morning. My practice is to wake up, brush my teeth and hair, drink some hot tea outside, and do the 9-Breath Method five times, absorbing/retaining large amounts of oxygen in my bloodstream. Gentle power breathing awakens the cellular vibration and stimulates metabolism. As I wake up slowly for 10 minutes each morning, my senses become heightened and I watch the birds in my garden. This is a quick and powerful method which we spend hours thoroughly teaching at the Qi Revolution Conference.

Qigong uses food, herbs and mushrooms to reverse many types of illness. A big part of what we teach is how “specific foods REVERSE specific diseases.” Many foods like kiwi have helped hundreds of our Qigong students reverse asthma. Our food protocols laid out in the book Conquering Any Disease have been tested with tens of thousands of real live people all over the country. I have seen dozens of people with cancer reverse it within a few months following strict dietary and Qigong practice guidelines. Adding the avocado seed to a delicious fruit and vegetable smoothie is a great way to maximize your phytochemical intake along with blending the seeds and skins of the apple. Sunlight, breathing techniques and high vibration foods are God’s natural medicine. Jeff Primack has studied with many Qigong masters from all over the world and has trained 50,000 people in live Qigong seminars since 2003. (Part 2 of this article appears next month)

The Two Faces of Estrogen The Two

Faces of Estrogen by Dr. Alisa Cooper

by Dr. Alisa Coop

er

T

he hormone estrogen can promote health or facilitate disease. From a health standpoint, estrogen stimulates female development and maturation, but it can also fuel reproductive cancers in genetically susceptible individuals. The body creates hormones to achieve an immediate, specific purpose. Once the desired effect or action is achieved, the body quickly breaks down those hormones and eliminates them. While the kidneys and intestines do most of the eliminating, it is the liver’s job to first transform the hormones into compounds that can be safely removed. If the liver is taxed to its limit by dietary insults,

58

Phoenix

NaturalAZ.com

environmental toxins or excessive alcohol or drug ingestion, it can become sluggish, overworked and inefficient. In that case, hormones, including estrogen, are not adequately metabolized or removed, accumulate and cause problems. How our bodies metabolize estrogen depends upon factors that include diet, lifestyle choices and genetic makeup. There is a select group of foods that have a favorable effect on estrogen metabolism, and those are the cruciferous vegetables, which includes broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. These vegetables are known to have a protective effect that wards off the

development of breast, cervical and other hormone-dependent cancers. Cruciferous vegetables contain two compounds responsible for cancer prevention: diindolemethane (DIM) and indole-3-carbinol (I3C), both available in supplement form. We would have to consume a couple of pounds of raw cruciferous veggies a day to get what we receive from the supplement, and that is neither practical nor desirable for most people. Raw cruciferous vegetables are hard for many people to digest, and they can also cause enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter) in some individuals. DIM, on the other hand, can actually inhibit the growth of goiters while providing its anti-cancer benefits. For protection against estrogen-dependent cancers, or if someone is receiving traditional hormone replacement at menopause or bio-identical hormones, taking a daily DIM supplement is advised. While there are no guarantees that estrogen will be a friend, taking DIM can go a long way toward preventing it from turning into an enemy.
