Happy Earth Day! This is the time of the year when the general public gets a glimpse of what the readers of this magazine practice all year-round: honoring Mother Earth and the importance of reducing our carbon footprint. It’s all about choices, and even the tiniest of decisions can have a big impact over a lifetime. Our cover story this month, “Live Green, Save Big,” identifies major areas where we can not only make an impactful contribution, but illustrates how these pivotal life decisions can be affordable, as well. Think about that; embracing sustainability and ecofriendly choices for housing, vehicles and food can actually save us money, too! For most of us, there’s no greater investment than in our home. In this issue, we are launching a special promotional section, “Your Green Home Guide,” running for the next few issues to provide valuable information and resources from local businesses on how to integrate greater sustainability within our homes. I hope you will take a look at each issue and reach out to these leading organizations to see how they can assist you in your goals. Being more “Earth-friendly” is indeed about the conscious choices we make every day. Here at Natural Awakenings magazine, we embrace this paradigm by only using recycled newsprint in our publication, because it’s the gentlest option for the environment. We only work with print companies in the communities we serve, supporting local businesses and keeping economic capital right here in Arizona. Yes, we could save money by using out-of-state printers, but freighting in tons of paper across the country each month is certainly not green. If you like our publication, I hope you will share a copy with a family member, friend or colleague and help us spread the word about living a healthier, greener lifestyle. Today, you can find Natural Awakenings at any CVS Pharmacy, AJ’s Fine Foods, Whole Foods and Fry’s Foods location across the Valley. Thank you for your continued support!

New Hope for Sufferers of Vocal Injury

B

eth Lawrence, an award-winning Phoenix singer and composer, is helping business professionals and older adults recover from vocal injury with holistic therapies she developed after facing nodules that threatened her own singing career. She says, “People don’t have to live with vocal problems. Voices can heal. You can have a strong, healthy, powerful voice, no matter what your age.” According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, approximately 7.5 million people in the United States have trouble using their voices. Lawrence’s company, All About Voice, provides private consultations, as well as online group classes, for individuals suffering from a variety of vocal issues. Her therapies were developed after she learned about the methods of 92-year-old Los Angeles instructor Maestro Giuseppe Balestrieri. Much of her vocal rehabilitation therapy includes expansive breathing techniques, placing the voice in the “core” of the body, and helping individuals learn how to use their bodies when speaking, instead of straining with the throat.

All About Voice is based in Phoenix. Consultations and online classes are offered internationally. For more information, call 800-567-1718, email Info@ AllAboutVoice.com or visit AllAboutVoice.com. 10

he Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits, Arizona Grantmakers Forum and FirstBank are promoting Arizona Gives Day 2014 on April 9. The 24-hour online giving initiative encourages Arizonans to recognize and financially support the efforts of nonprofits from across the state. In addition to fundraising, Arizona Gives Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of the state’s nonprofit sector and educate communities on the benefits of online giving. Arizonans can go online at AzGives.org and pledge their financial support to the nonprofit of their choice. Donors will select the recipient of their online donation and the donation will go directly to their chosen organization. Guidelines and registration information are available at the website. “After seeing the success of this event last year, we are excited to have this event return in Arizona, and raise more than before,” says Patrick McWhortor, president and CEO of the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits. “We hope to have as many as 10,000 Arizonans support our nonprofit community that day, raising much-needed dollars for these worthwhile organizations.”

Get Started with Beneficial Salt Therapy

T

he Salt Chalet of Arizona is offering two specials for new clients: the Dead Sea Therapeutic Salt Room at $45 for three sessions ($165 value) or two sessions free with the purchase of an eight-, 12-, or 15-session package. Salt Chalet Arizona is a unique microclimate that mimics the therapeutic nature of a salt mine. Halotherapy (treatment in a simulated salt environment) is widely acclaimed and has been used since the 19th century in Europe. A series of 10 to 12 sessions has been shown to make an enormous difference in patients’ lives. The effect on children is particularly dramatic. The air is permeated with negative ions that clear breathing passages and lungs and has a host of other effects that, according to studies, dramatically improve ailments such as asthma, bronchitis, chronic ear/nose/throat illnesses, eczema, psoriasis and insomnia. Recent medical studies in Europe and Canada have shown that salt rooms can also benefit other conditions such as snoring, colds, allergies, wheezing, smoker’s cough, influenza and chest tightness. Ventilation and Cleaning Hinder Indoor Pollutants

Side Effects Counter P Benefits of Medications

D

rugs are powerful chemicals with many effects on the body, and while some of the effects are potentially beneficial, others can be unwanted and harmful—they are known as “side effects”. Many people don’t feel they have any other option than to remain on high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar medicines or anti-anxiety and antidepressant drugs. However, that’s not always the case. The human body has an amazing innate ability to heal and return to a state of homeostasis (balance), and many symptoms of illness are actually the first signs that this natural process is being hindered. Rather than using toxic drugs to suppress symptoms, natural therapies such as acupuncture, nutrition and symptom-selective supplementation, herbal medicine, homeopathy, vitamin/mineral therapy, chelation IV therapy or ozone therapy are far safer and extremely effective alternatives. Not only do they support the healing process, they also help to detoxify the body of many accumulated toxins, including those from prescription medications. roperly ventilating and frequently cleaning our homes and offices are both important to our health, concludes a new European study published in the Journal of Environmental Science and Health. Researchers analyzed bacterial and fungal counts and suspended particulate matter in indoor air samples of 40 homes and offices. They determined that 45 percent had indoor pollution levels greater than that recommended by the current European Concerted Action Report on air quality standards. An analysis of a Canadian government Health Measures Survey discovered 47 different indoor volatile organic compounds (VOC) among more than half of the 3,857 households surveyed throughout Canada. Most of the VOCs identified there have also been present in separate European and U.S. studies. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), VOCs are carbon chemical compounds that can evaporate under normal indoor atmospheric conditions. The concern with indoor VOCs is their potential to react with indoor ozone to produce harmful byproducts that may be associated with adverse health effects in sensitive populations. Benzene, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene and xylene top the list of common VOCs inside U.S. households, according to an EPA report. Typical sources comprise common household chemicals, furnishings and décor, as well as indoor activities such as unventilated cooking, heating and smoking.

Calm Restless Legs Naturally

R

estless Legs Syndrome (RLS) can wake both sufferers and their partners at night, and more people suffer than realize it. Even when both continue to doze through a bout of restlessness, it hampers the quality of sleep and can cause them to begin the day fatigued. Some people only notice that a problem exists by its absence―when a vacation or business trip prompts sleeping in separate beds, the calmer partner will enjoy deeper, more restful sleep. Other problems can follow if the syndrome is left untreated. A 2011 study by the Interdisciplinary Pain Centre at University Medical Centre, in Freiburg, Germany, reported that untreated RLS patients exhibited depression, anxiety, compulsivity and other impaired behaviors. With topical application of appropriate herbs, oversensitive nerves in legs can be settled and the muscles can be made less responsive to such stimulation. Cramp bark, St. John’s wort and wild yam have been used for centuries to relax oversensitive nerves and relieve residual tension in skeletal muscles. Sage also has a history of medicinal use, including modern-day application as an antispasmodic. Rosemary, another essential herb, is used to increase circulation and help flush toxins built up in stagnant muscle fibers. The journal International Clinical Psychopharmacology also recently reported that peppermint and lavender work to naturally relax the body. Combining all of these plants can prove an advantageous herbal treatment for RLS. Place one tablespoon of each herb in a cup of hot (not boiling) water to produce a decoction that can be spread or rolled on the legs. The liquid will be absorbed into the skin within a few minutes and leg restlessness will subside and motion will cease.

ir conditioning does more than keep us cool. A study of 300 adults and homes concludes that central air conditioning removes significant levels of volatile organic compounds and pollution particulates from indoor air. The research, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, finds that using air conditioning with windows closed reduced indoor air pollution the most. One caveat, however, is that the research was conducted in Taipei, China—notable for its extreme outdoor pollution. Another recent study published in Environmental Science confirms the general premise. A research team in Zhejiang, China, found that air conditioning reduced the presence of potent atmospheric pollutants known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAC) by 23 percent. PACs contain compounds that are carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic (damaging to fetuses).

Pick-Me-Up Books

Mailbox Libraries Gain Worldwide

A new publication, Trade and Environment Review: Wake Up Before it is Too Late, from the United Nations Commission on Trade and Development, declares that transformative changes are needed in current food, agriculture and trade systems to increase diversity on farms, reduce use of fertilizer and other inputs, support small-scale farmers and create strong local food systems. Key indicators of needed transformation in agriculture include increased soil carbon content and better integration between crop and livestock production; more incorporation of agroforestry and wild vegetation; reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of livestock production; reduction of GHG through sustainable peatland, forest and grassland management; optimization of organic and inorganic fertilizer use; reduction of waste throughout the food chains; changing dietary patterns toward climate-friendly food consumption; and reform of the international trade regime for food and agriculture. The report includes contributions from more than 60 international experts, including a commentary from the Institute of Agriculture and Trade Policy.

Alice Mills smiles as she looks at the box that sits on her lawn in Hutchinson, Kansas, an act of kindness for neighbors and the community. Inside the box is a miniature library. Books sit on two shelves; the bottom with short stories for children and the top with novels for adults. After her children grew up and moved away from home, they took the books they wanted with them. The rest sat on a bookshelf collecting dust. “If they’re here, they’re not being read,” Mills says. The concept for the Little Free Library began in 2009 to promote literacy and the love of reading, as well as to build a sense of community, according to LittleFreeLibrary.org. They are now popping up around the world in the United States, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Pakistan, Spain, Turkey and the Congo. A recent Pew Internet & American Life Project survey shows that Americans strongly value the role of public libraries in their communities, both for providing access to materials and resources and for promoting literacy and improving the overall quality of life. More than half used a public library in a one-year period, and 72 percent say they live in a “library household”. Most Americans say they have only had positive experiences at public libraries and value a range of library resources and services. National Library Week begins April 13.

Trees are Trying Forests Have Limited Powers to Save Us

Forests have a finite capacity to soak up atmospheric carbon dioxide, according to a recent study from Northern Arizona University. Results published in the online journal New Phytologist illustrate how today’s rising atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) might alter the carbon and nitrogen content of ecosystems. In contrast to expectations, research over an 11-year period showed that ecosystem carbon uptake was not significantly increased by high CO2. While plants did contain more carbon in the presence of higher CO2 levels, the soil lost carbon content due to microbial decomposition. These factors essentially canceled each other out, signifying that nature cannot entirely self-correct against climate change.

Harnessing the Ocean’s Power Potential

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is investing $16 million on 17 tidal and wave projects to sustainably and efficiently capture energy from waves, tides and currents. The projects will also help gather crucial data on how these devices interact with the surrounding environment. The DOE will also spend $13.5 million on eight projects to help U.S. companies build durable, efficient wave and tidal devices that reduce overall costs and maximize the amount of energy captured. Specifically, the projects will focus on developing new components and software that predicts ocean conditions and adjusts device settings accordingly to optimize power production.

Remember the three things you control. In a way, the economy is just a vague and sometimes ambiguous idea. It refers in a general way to trillions of dollars of goods, services and products by billions of people across the planet. When you face a financial challenge, is it the vast, impersonal economy at work? Or is it your personal economy, which you can directly control?

Finding Opportunities in Any Economy by Jack Canfield

Y

our own beliefs and behaviors are greater predictors of your success than any fluctuation in the marketplace. Even when the newspapers splash the word “recession” across the front page, you can write your own success story. Start by becoming an “inverse paranoid”. Believe that every event in your life is the seed for your greater good; something meant to enrich you, empower you or advance your cause. Imagine how much easier it would be to succeed in life if you were constantly expecting the world to support you and bring you opportunity. You can easily verify this belief for yourself. Just think about the last time that a terrible event turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

22

Phoenix

What opportunity exists here? Take the fast track to inspiration by constantly asking yourself: What’s the opportunity here? Make this a habit, and you’ll stay calm and centered during any event that seems like a setback. The beauty of this question is that it triggers your mind to respond with positive suggestions. Compare these to the useless information you get by asking yourself the questions such as: Why did this happen to me? or Who’s to blame for this mess? If you get passed over for a promotion or your retirement account takes a hit in the stock market, remember to ask: What’s the opportunity here? or one of its inspiring variations: What can I learn from this event? What will I do differently from now on? Who can I turn to as a mentor or coach? What’s my next action?

You can’t always count on the economy, but you can always rely on yourself. Remember, you have absolute control over three things in your life: The thoughts you think The images you visualize The actions you take (including what you say to others) Your life experience is simply the sum total of the choices you make in these three areas. And you can attract new results at any time by making new choices. Use these ideas and exercises to do just that. With less space to furnish, heat, cool, light, clean and maintain, we can enjoy greater financial freedom, less stress and more time for fun.

very pivotal life decision, from choosing where we live to eating healthier, can support our best interests environmentally, as well. The good news is that it is possible to afford a sustainable way of life. Eco-friendly choices for housing, vehicles and food—generally perceived as expensive for the average individual or family— often are not only attainable when pursued in a thoughtful way, but can actually save us money compared to maintaining the status quo.

1. Buying a Home

When considering a move to a new place, we often find out how much house we can manage and then proceed to invest to the hilt. But if hitting our spending limit will leave a deficit in the amount of green and healthy home features and furnishings 26

we can achieve, we could end up with a residence that makes neither financial nor ecological sense, and isn’t good for our health. A solution is to scale back on costly square footage. Spending 25 to 40 percent less than we think we can on a smaller home provides more possibilities when planning the renovation budget, enabling us to create a home that is more deeply satisfying. Nicole Alvarez, an architectural designer with Ellen Cassilly Architect, in Durham, North Carolina, who blogs at IntentionallySmall.com, says that if we value quality over quantity, place over space and living more intentionally in every aspect of our lives, we are ready for a small home. Occupying less space has profoundly influenced her daily life and happiness. Alvarez has found, “When space is limited, everything has a function

Urban, suburban or rural, where we live incurs long-term repercussions on the natural environment. Choosing an established community within or close to an urban center tends to be more protective of air, water and land quality than living in a distant, cardependent suburb, yet many families feel either drawn to or resigned to the suburbs for the lower housing prices. But as Ilana Preuss, vice president at Washington, D.C.-based Smart Growth America, explains, “There is more to housing affordability than how much rent or mortgage we pay. Transportation costs are the secondbiggest budget item for most families. In locations with access to few transportation choices, the combined cost of housing and transportation can be more than 60 percent of the total household budget. For families with access to a range of transportation choices, the combined cost can be less than 40 percent.” In most suburbs, where the only practical transportation choice is a personal vehicle, dependency on a car takes a toll on us financially and physically. Driving a personal vehicle 15,000 miles a year can cost about $9,122 annually in ownership and op-

A subcompact that averages 32 miles per gallon (mpg) and has a sticker price below $15,000 can save us so much money compared with a top-selling compact SUV—upwards of $16,000 over five years, according to Edmunds. com—that if we need a larger vehicle on occasion, we can more easily afford to rent one. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), both small and midsized, can be an even better choice, averaging 41 mpg. Cost comparisons show that an HEV can save a heavily travelling city driver nearly $1,000 in fuel costs annually versus a comparably sized conventional gasoline-powered car. Although a 2014 midsized HEV has an average suggested retail price of $28,431, the category has been around long enough to create a market in previously owned vehicles. A used hybrid that is just two years old can cost up to 25 percent less than a new one.

is a leading detriment to the nation’s collective wellness, according to the federal agency Healthy People. Sustainable cities provide many transportation options, including public buses and trains, car-sharing services and all forms of ride sharing; and perhaps most importantly, they are bike- and pedestrian-friendly. Choosing communities that make it possible to reduce driving and even go car-free much of the time can save us money, reduce stress and improve our health.

3. Choosing a Car

We know two primary facts about cars: They are expensive and those with internal combustion engines pollute during operation. Still, many of us need one. Reducing the total impact and burden of owning a car can be as simple as prioritizing fuel efficiency. It helps that fuel-sippers now come in more sizes than just small, yet small subcompacts remain a good place to start our research because of their budget-friendly prices and high fuel economy.

Green Housing Yields Social and Security Benefits n Large-home inhabitants may go all day without seeing one another and communication and togetherness can suffer. Family members living in small homes can more easily cultivate strong communications and cohesion. n Dense neighborhoods encourage interaction and cooperation among neighbors, nurturing a cohesive community that can reward us with social connections, collective responsibility and assistance when needed. n Urban homes give vandals and thieves fewer opportunities because neighbors are close by and passersby may be more readily noticed. n Small homes can encourage disconnecting from technology and getting outside. When the TV can be heard throughout the house, parents are more likely to urge outdoor playtime for kids. n The footprint of a small dwelling uses a fraction of the buildable lot, leaving more outdoor space for planting gardens that can nourish bodies and souls. The good news is that buying American doesn’t mean only buying American made. We back the U.S. economy and jobs when we purchase used items that have been renewed or repurposed by enterprising citizens. Creative reuse supports new and existing businesses that collect, clean, sort, recondition, refurbish, remanufacture, update, refinish, reupholster, repair, tailor, distribute and sell used parts, materials and finished goods. Sarah Baird, director of outreach and communications of the Center for a New American Dream, an organization working to shift consumption away from wasteful trends, loves the history of used items. She says, “An item that has already lived one life has a story to tell, and is infinitely more interesting than anything newly manufactured.” Another reward is the big savings afforded by previously owned durable goods; not even America’s big-box discount retailers can beat these genuine bargains. Of course, not everything is available in the used marketplace, but when it makes sense, we can proudly know that our purchases support American ingenuity and workers.

able ways. In addition to driving less, banning toxic products from our household cupboards and dinner plates is another solid place to start on the road to improved well-being for ourselves and the planet. Toxic consumer products pollute the planet, from manufacture through use and disposal. They aren’t doing us any favors. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that the average human body now contains an estimated 700 industrial compounds, pollutants and other chemicals due to exposure to toxic consumer products and industrial chemicals. After researching proper local disposal of such hazards, replace them on future shopping forays with safer choices. It’s an investment in our health that can save untold pain and money and pay off big time in avoiding health problems ranging from cancer, asthma and chronic diseases to impaired fertility, birth defects and learning disabilities according to the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families Coalition. To reduce exposure to the toxins

that are commonly sprayed on conventional crops, select sustainable and organic versions of foods to prepare at home whenever possible. Such choices help keep both our bodies and the environment healthy and can be surprisingly affordable compared with eating out and consuming prepackaged convenience foods. By substituting whole foods for prepared foods, cooking more meals at home and practicing good eating habits—like eating less meat and downsizing portions—the average person can enjoy high-quality food for $7 to $11 per day. This matches or falls below what the average American daily spends on food, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Considering that diet-related diseases can cost afflicted families thousands of dollars a year, better food choices can make us not only healthier, but wealthier, too. Your Green Home Guide Real Estate • Energy Efficiency • Solar • Home Products/Services

Save energy. Live healthier. Reduce expenses. Those are the goals of our special advertising section, Your Green Home Guide, appearing in the next few issues. Natural Awakenings is proud to share information from leading local resources dedicated to helping you integrate sustainability and healthy living into your home.

Choosing Green Homes Increases Sustainability by C. R. Herro

W

ith the public’s increasing focus on green living, homebuilders are taking note and offering greener options. In addition to the feel-good benefit of doing the right thing for the environment, many of the greener options now offered translate into direct benefits in improving occupants’ health, saving money and improving the impact we have on our environment. By making better choices in the homes we purchase and the products we fill them with, people can improve their overall health. For example, many green-minded homebuyers are demanding that their homebuilder avoid the use of harmful chemicals such as high volatile organic compounds (VOC), which are commonly found in conventional paints, carpeting and cleaning products. Not only are these chemicals associated with increased asthma, allergies and cancer risks, but they also pollute the natural environment. Alternative options to products containing VOCs are readily available by choosing green-labeled materials for building and remodels. In addition, ensuring that a home is built with proper exhaust ventilation and high-performance 30

air filtration greatly reduces contaminants from pollen, mold spores and dust. This benefit also directly impacts the health of the occupants, particularly those that suffer from allergies. Another way to reduce indoor air pollutants is home sealing, which involves caulking windows, weather stripping and penetration sealing—anything that reduces air infiltration into the home. Sealing also retains conditioned air, which greatly reduces the cost to heat and cool a home. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has consumer product labeling and detailed information available through its Indoor airPLUS program. Greener homes also save money. In 1992, the EPA introduced ENERGY STAR to identify and promote more efficient products. Consumers saved more than $24 billion in 2012 by simply choosing ENERGY STAR certified products. Examples include appliances, windows and lighting, and even whole homes can be certified to meet ENERGY STAR standards. The reduction of unnecessarily wasted electricity and water translates into significant savings to the homeowner in utility bills. Also, homes that include advanced energy-efficient features are now being appraised as more

valuable as a result of changes in national appraisal standards, so homeowners that chose greener home options are now capturing increased value upon resale. Homebuyers can also save money on utility bills by choosing solar options. In the past, the cost of solar installation often exceeded the financial benefit of reduced utility bills. It was a constructive option without a lot of financial benefit to the homeowner. Now, because of significant reductions in installation costs, the average homebuyer can enjoy significant savings above the cost of selecting this option, making solar both a financially sound and more socially responsible renewable energy option. Solar is a key in transforming our carbon-based society into a more sustainable solar-powered economy.

Whether choosing a new home or remodeling an existing home, today’s homebuyers have advanced choices that can both significantly improve the quality of their lives and contribute to a more green society. One program is the Home Energy Rating System (HERS), which quantifies the cumulative impact of all the energy efficient features made to a home (resnet.us/hers-index). When building a home, buyers can insist that their homebuilder utilize some of these new sustainable options. In addition, Realtors are now seeking advanced green training to assist buyers that demand better, greener lives and can assist their clients in navigating these options. Even if someone is simply updating an existing home, these options can be incorporated to improve the home’s health and reduce its operating costs. In fact, local utility providers have gotten on board with the green movement by offering resources and discounts to allow homeowners to cost-effectively upgrade their homes to greener standards. C.R. Herro is vice president of environmental affairs for Meritage Homes, with a Ph.D. in environmental engineering. He leads their energy and innovation program, which combines design, energy efficiency, water management, sustainability and new technologies to establish a new standard in home building that provides better comfort and healthier air, as well as less cost to own and operate. n business for 32 years, EcoClean president and founder Gerard Windstein states, “Indoor pollutants such as dust, allergens, toxic residues (from cleansers, for example), fumes and gases emitted by plastic and petrochemicalbased products and other irritants, are largely transparent in our daily lives. These pollutants are virtually invisible. They damage our bodies over time, and sometimes we find out about the danger after it’s too late.” Thirty-two years ago, Mr. Windstein started EcoClean carpet cleaning and after 10 years, he developed severe sensitivities to the chemicals he was using. Faced with the choice of leaving the industry or finding a safer product, he searched for a solution to his dilemma. Through research and study, Mr. Windstein discovered many factors which contribute to poor indoor air quality and was further amazed to find out how many people have been affected by poor indoor air quality, especially those with allergies and asthma. Using this knowledge, he expanded the business to include a retail store with safe alternatives to all the toxic products we bring into our homes. Organic Living, the home of EcoClean, provides a large showroom of green and healthy home products such as organic mattresses/bedding, organic personal care, organic baby clothes, organic and natural cleaning products, 100 percent natural carpet, natural linoleum flooring, cork and bamboo flooring, and zero-VOC paints and sealers. Visitors can try out more than 15 organic mattresses on display, the largest offering available in the Phoenix-metro area. Work with a ‘Green’ Real Estate Agent by Jan Green

W

e all know that real estate agents offer services when homeowners need to buy or sell a home. But what are the advantages of enlisting the services of a “green” agent? There are many advantages to using an agent that has undertaken the course of study to either become an EcoBroker, like myself, or a NAR (National Association of Realtors) Green agent. A “green” agent is trained to recognize green, sustainable and energyefficient features. Defining these to buyers and sellers helps them to make educated decisions as to cost savings on utility bills and assisting consumers with health-related features by comparing one home to another. A green

agent is also trained to work to gain the most value for a home with these features during the sales process. During an initial interview with a buyer, questions are asked as to health-related issues, chemical sensitivity and interest in homes with energy-efficient features. During this session, it’s critically important to uncover what kinds of homes are of interest. Typically, energy saving is of concern, according to a National Association of Realtors Study in 2011. During the purchase process, and specifically the inspection period, energy audits are discussed. If a home buyer is curious as to the efficiency of

the home’s systems and components, an energy audit may be requested of the seller. Home sellers can order an energy audit at a reduced cost and be reimbursed by the buyer for this information. This will lead to a full disclosure of nearly every aspect of the home, much more than a normal home inspection. Selling a home with green and energy-efficient features requires unique knowledge and marketing to convey these features to the public. Homes with solar panels require a specific process in order to gain any value for them at the point of sale. Utility bills before and after solar, solar leases and any green features are uploaded onto the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) for buyers and the appraiser to view. If a home has a leased solar system, the buyer must qualify for that lease with a 680 FICO score or better. It’s critically important for a green agent to discuss the home with the appraiser before they arrive at the home, asking if they’ve appraised homes with green features. If not, ask the lender to request another appraiser. Once the appraiser arrives at the home, provide a feature list, utility bills, contract, comparable sales, copy of the contract and the Green & Energy Efficient Addendum to record the features and attach to the appraisal. Armed with this data, an appraiser can work to gain as much value for the home as possible. Providing value-added service for homes with green and energy efficient features requires skill and knowledge that is above and beyond the normal real estate agent’s scope, unless that agent has a construction background. It’s been rewarding providing value-added service, and clients appreciate it. Jan Green is a certified EcoBroker with RE/MAX Excalibur Realty. Contact her at 602-620-2699 or GotGreen.info. This is our Brain on Mercury by Dr. Alan Christianson

E

xposure to mercury is something we face every day. Even though we may only be exposed to small amounts at a time, the threat is real because they accumulate over time in the body. Ill effects come from the toxic burden of a lifetime of exposure. For those that suffer from hypothyroidism, memory loss, fibromyalgia, painful feet or hands, irritability, muscle weakness, episodes of confusion or disorientation, food intolerances, frequent infections or skin rashes, mercury poisoning could be the source of symptoms. If untreated, mercury raises long-term risks of Alzheimer’s disease, heart attacks, diabetes and several types of cancer. The main sources of exposure are dental amalgam, seafood, high

36

Phoenix

NaturalAZ.com

fructose corn syrup and medications. Dental amalgams are silver-colored fillings. They are made of 40 to 50 percent mercury. Amalgams gradually degrade and continually leach mercury into the body. Amalgams are so toxic the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has written elaborate procedures that dental labs must follow when disposing of any unused material. Seafood contains a type of mercury that is especially prone to end up in our brains. Even small amounts have been shown to impair our ability to select words or process new information and worsen hand/eye coordination. The EPA was alarmed enough about this to issue a report to Congress in 1997 in which they stated

that at least 8 percent of American women ages 16 to 49 carried dangerous levels of mercury in their bodies derived from seafood. Types of seafood with the most mercury include mackerel, shark, swordfish and tilefish. Although tuna is not the highest source of mercury, it is a type of fish that many of us eat on a regular basis. The Environmental Working Group advises consuming no more than four ounces of tuna per week for most adults. Lower mercury types of seafood include herring, pollock, salmon, sardines, shrimp and tilapia. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a sweetener widely used by food manufacturers. Many have argued that it is more dangerous than sugar. The increased use of HFCS over the last few decades has paralleled the rise in obesity over the same timeframe. It is now so common in our foods that the average American eats a quarter-tohalf-cup of it every day. A 2009 study showed that mercury was present in half of the foods containing HFCS. Many factories that produce HFCS do still use outdated, low-cost, mercurycell technologies. Many medications use mercury as a preservative, especially in vaccines. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration maintains a list of more than 130 prescription and over-the-counter medications that contain mercury that includes eye drops, nasal sprays, skin creams and hemorrhoid ointments. Mercury is readily absorbed into the body from any of these sources. Now that it is apparent that we are all exposed daily, what can we do about it? Even if we do not have symptoms of mercury poisoning, be aware

of the sources and avoid as many as possible. This lowers the risk of harm and also lowers the global burden of mercury, by supporting greener manufacturers. Other steps to take include replacing any old or unstable dental amalgams with newer, non-mercury alternatives; avoiding intake of highmercury seafood and focusing on low-mercury types for regular use; and avoiding HFCS in our diet (this will also help lower body fat). Ask a doctor about the mercury free vaccines that are now available and check with a pharmacist about mercury content in eye drops, nasal and topical products, because mercury-free alternatives do exist. If there have been past exposures to mercury sources or symptoms that may be related, consider getting tested. Mercury can be tested via blood, urine, hair and stool. Some tests show only recent exposure, while others can show our total body burden. Talk to a doctor trained in environmental medicine to determine the best options. If it is present, mercury can safely be removed from our brain and the rest of our body. Improvements after detoxification include better mental focus, weight loss, easier word selection and healthier-looking skin. Alan Christianson, NMD, focuses on optimal diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease. For more information, visit MyIntegrativeHealth. com. See ad on this page.

Sustainability Careers Challenging Yet Rewarding by Kena Fedorschak

ustainability degree programs are increasing in prominence nationwide. The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) recognizes 417 institutions offering undergraduate programs in sustainability, the majority of which have been established in the last decade. The Arizona State University (ASU) School of Sustainability, the first school in the United States dedicated to providing a collegiate education in sustainability, has remained at the forefront of the movement since its establishment in 2008. Prescott College, San Diego State University and Colorado Mountain College also offer degree programs in sustainability. While ASU and other academic institutions have recognized the need to plan appropriately to ensure future prosperity for our children and grandchildren, graduates can experience difficulty finding work in their chosen field. Organizations generally find it unnecessary to hire individuals whose sole job is to identify and implement sustainable practices; a dearth of jobs exist that require only an understanding of sustainable principles, and graduates often must obtain additional skills to find meaningful employment. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, green jobs represented 2.6 percent of the labor force in 2011. The private sector employs 2.5 million individuals in green jobs; 38

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, green jobs represented 2.6 percent of the labor force in 2011. the public sector employs 880,000 people. In the private sector, green jobs reside in mature segments that cover a wide swath of activities, including manufacturing (development of pollution mitigation equipment), construction (retrofitting homes to increase efficiency), transportation (implementation of commuter rail systems) and trade (recyclable material merchant wholesalers). In addition, startup companies, primarily in clean technology-related industries, have grown rapidly in recent years (smart grid and solar photovoltaic companies). In the public sector, green jobs exist at the local, state and federal levels, and are primarily focused on regulatory code compliance, administration of environmental programs and transportation. Graduates of the ASU School of Sustainability understand the importance of evaluating complex problems

by examining their social, economic and environmental impacts. Determined graduates typically use their unique perspective to land green jobs, while others continue their education or find employment elsewhere. Several recent graduates are profiled here. Devin Reginato graduated in May 2012 from the School of Sustainability. He is currently the director of sustainability at Eco PACT, a Phoenix company that manufactures sustainable products for the packaging, storage, shipping, distribution and manufacturing industries. Reginato conducts research to ensure that the products remain competitive, supports marketing and lead generation efforts, and works to maintain the company’s strategic partnerships. Jaleila Brumand graduated in May 2013 from the School of Sustainability. She is currently pursuing an MSc in energy and the environment at Lancaster University, in England. Brumand’s dissertation, which examines sustainable messaging in media programming, involves a partnership between Small World Consulting and the British Broadcasting Company. Her eventual aim is to leverage her education to positively impact emissions trends and influence climate change policy. Natalie Fleming graduated from the School of Sustainability in May 2012. After graduation, she worked as a district manager for Ecoscraps, a Utahbased startup that collects food waste and composts it to create organic gardening products from garden soil to plant food. She currently works as a corporate partnerships specialist with

Hampton Creek Foods, a San Francisco-based startup that is developing plant-based replacements for egg products that are healthy, affordable and tasty. Maxwell Scott graduated from the School of Sustainability in May 2012. He subsequently attended the London School of Economics, where he received a MSc in international relations. While in London, Scott worked as a management strategy consultant for Cognoscere, LLC, where he helped develop reports in conjunction with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature. Additionally, he was an intern at the U.S. Embassy in London, where he supported efforts to gather and disseminate intelligence for policymakers and diplomats regarding U.S.-UK trade relations. Scott intends to use his experience to promote sustainable trade as a diplomat. Fedorschak co-founded the Honor Society for Sustainability at Arizona State University. He believes sustainable management practices can be implemented without negatively impacting the bottom line. Contact him at kfedorschak@gmail.com.

Culinary Mushroom Magic by Case Adams

oday, fungi cuisine in the West is typically limited to Agaracus bisporus—the relatively mild button mushroom, which matures into the acclaimed portobello. But digging deeper into available options reveals chanterelle (Cantharellus sp.), oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus), morel (Morchella sp.) and shiitake (Lentinula edodes) species. These culinary mushrooms, provide a virtuosity of delicate flavors harboring nutritional and medicinal benefits according to those that study them. University of California-Berkeley research scientist and Mycologist Christopher Hobbs, Ph.D., explains that shiitake and oyster mushrooms follow the button as the most widely cultivated around the world. “They come in many colors, varieties and species and are typically the most easily digested and utilized of all mushrooms,” he notes. “Mushrooms are an amazing health food,” says Hobbs. “Most edible fungi are high in fiber, good-quality protein, key vitamins, micronutrients, phosphorous and potassium, and low in fat and calories. It’s one of nature’s perfect diet foods.” As protein powerhouses, portobello and other button mushrooms, shiitake and oyster varieties all deliver between 30 and 35 percent protein by weight. The fiber content can range from 20 grams per 100 grams (about 3.5 ounces) in the case of portobello to a lofty 48 grams per 100 grams in the Phoenix oyster mushroom. Mushrooms also supply potent B vitamins. One hundred grams (about 3.5 ounces) of portobello contains more than four milligrams (mg) of riboflavin (B2), 69 mg niacin (B3) and 12 mg pantothenic acid (B5). Shiitake’s comparable numbers are three, 106 and 17 while pink oyster delivers 2.45, 66 and 33 mg of the three nu40

trients. Thus, they deliver significantly more than recommended daily allowances (RDA)—for example, niacin’s adult RDA ranges from 14 to 16 mg and riboflavin’s is just 1.1 to 1.3 mg. Mushrooms also present one of the few food sources of vitamin D— primarily D2—but some also contain small amounts of vitamin D3, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture research. Also, their D2 levels spike dramatically when sun-dried sporeside-up, confirmed in research by internationally recognized Mycologist Paul Stamets. Mushrooms contain important minerals, too. Portobello contains 4,500 mg, oyster 4,500 mg and shiitake 2,700 mg of potassium per 100 grams, all with low sodium levels. Plus, they deliver usable amounts of copper, zinc and selenium. Beyond the nutrient numbers lies mushrooms’ bonus round: They contain special complex polysaccharides—long-chain molecules within cell walls—that have been the subject of intense research at leading institutions around the world, including Harvard, Yale and the University of California. Mushrooms’ (1-3)-beta-glucan complexes have been shown to inhibit many cancers and suggest potential solutions for diabetes, heart disease and immune-related conditions. Stamets explains that mushrooms also contain sterols, shown to benefit

Traditional and Alternative Cancer Treatment of Lymphoma by Dr. Paul Stallone

L

ymph nodes are invaluable when it comes to the body’s ability to fight disease. These little glands are part of an intricate system that is found throughout the body, a system that has many components and functions. However, overall function of the lymphatic system is to rid the body of certain biological waste. The body desperately needs healthy lymph nodes as part of a functioning immune system. Lymphoma is cancer of the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, blood or other organs that make up the lymphatic system. These cancers are divided into two types: Hodgkin’s lymphoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The difference between the two can sometimes only be detected on a microscopic level, as both can produce similar symptoms and develop in the same places. There are five sub-types of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and 30 of non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, and successful treatment depends on an accurate diagnosis.

42

Treatment with conventional medicine can consist of chemotherapy, radiation and/or surgery. Treatment will depend on factors like type of cancer, cancer stage, age, health status, previous cancer treatment and lifestyle. Conventional treatment of lymphoma has advanced with time and can be successful, but some still consider it primitive. Chemotherapy for example, uses potent chemicals that disrupt the cell division process. Problems arise because chemotherapy is not selective, meaning it targets all cells (even healthy ones) that divide rapidly. One of the few positives of chemotherapy is the fact that it travels throughout the body; this is beneficial when cancer has metastasized. One of the many negatives of chemotherapy are the side effects: hair loss, weight loss, nausea, fatigue, vomiting and a likely contributor to future cancer. Radiation works similarly to chemotherapy in that it triggers cells to commit suicide. Radiation is also nondiscriminatory when it comes to the cells it targets, and

can kill non-cancerous cells. While advancements in radiation therapy also have come a long way, treatment is not always effective and can still produce serious side effects. Radiation can be applied from a machine outside the body or from radioactive material placed in the body near tumor sites. Systemic radiation therapy uses radioactive substances like radioactive iodine that travel in the blood to kill cancer cells. Surgery can be used to either biopsy a lymph node or to remove them. The risk of surgery can be compared to sticking a needle in a water balloon. The balloon doesn’t burst completely, but a leaking hole results. Unfortunately, it’s not water that seeps out, but cancer cells, which may then travel to additional sites throughout the body. Fortunately, patients with lymphoma have other options when it comes to their treatment. Alternative/integrative medicine, along with lifestyle changes, has proven to be quite successful with lymphomas. Unlike many conventional treatments, alternative therapies do not cause adverse reactions or create cancer later in life. High-dose vitamin C intravenous (IV) therapy has been used for decades to treat many types of cancer. “We now have a better understanding of vitamin C’s anti-cancer action, plus a clear safety profile and biological and clinical plausibility with a firm foundation to proceed,” says researcher Dr. Jeanne Drisko, director of the integrative medicine program at University of Kansas Medical Center. “Taken together, our data provide strong evidence to justify larger and robust clinical trials to definitively examine the benefit of adding vitamin C to conventional chemotherapy.” Naturopathic physicians have been using these IVs and others for years with much success. Hopefully, as more patients advocate for alternative treatments, additional studies will be given importance and the general population will put more trust in these natural cancer therapies. Paul Stallone, NMD, founded the Arizona Integrative Medical Center, located at 8144 E. Cactus Rd., Ste. 820, in Scottsdale. He combines natural/alternative/conventional treatments to best fit and benefit each individual patient’s needs. For more information, call 480-214-3922 or visit DrStallone. com. A Lifestyle Approach to Allergies by Dr. Jonathan Psenka

F

or most people, the arrival of springtime in Arizona is also the time of year when they experience allergy symptoms that include itchy eyes, runny nose and sneezing. Some people only develop fairly mild symptoms, while others have symptoms that are nearly debilitating. More and more people are finding that their allergy symptoms are lasting longer than usual, and some people are finding that they are suffering from allergies almost all year long. For those lucky individuals that are only slightly bothered by allergies,

44

Phoenix

NaturalAZ.com

a naturally-based antihistamine, like quercetin, may provide ample support. Those with more severe or persistent symptoms may find that using antihistamines doesn’t provide enough relief. For those people, a lifestyle approach to allergies may help to reduce their symptoms and improve their overall quality of life. A lifestyle approach to controlling allergies aims to reduce any risk factors that may increase the severity of allergies or to eliminate things that may make someone progressively more allergic. One of the first things

to consider when using lifestyle to reduce respiratory allergic symptoms is the relationship between eating some types of foods and allergy symptoms. Those foods have the potential to aggravate allergic symptoms, and some can even predispose a person to the development of environmental allergies. Certain foods, namely corn, dairy, soy and wheat, may cause increased allergic symptoms in people that have a sensitivity to them. Other foods to which a person may have an allergy or sensitivity increase inflammation levels and aggravate respiratory allergic symptoms. Eating an antiinflammatory diet rich in antioxidantcontaining foods can be very helpful for many allergy sufferers. Avoidance is another factor to consider with seasonal allergies. It certainly makes sense to try and avoid exposure to known allergens, but what has been discovered is that it is also very important to avoid pollution. A recent study found that exposure to diesel exhaust particulate increased a person’s allergic response to a common airborne allergen (ragweed) by 16 times. Diesel exhaust emissions are a major contributor to Arizona’s air pollution, but they are not the only type of pollution, nor are they the only type likely to exhibit allergy-enhancing effects. It is a great idea to have a highquality air filter in our homes that can

remove both chemical and particulate matter from the air. This is especially important if we live in a metropolitan area or if we have children. It’s probably safe to say that most people associate the use of probiotics, the beneficial bacteria that live symbiotically on and in us, with gastrointestinal health. Many people might not realize that having a healthy population of probiotics in the gastrointestinal system can protect us from allergic disease. An overgrowth of the non-beneficial types of bacteria in the gut, often referred to as a dysbiosis, has been shown to precede the development of allergic disease. While research is still trying to determine the full impact of probiotics on allergies, it seems that taking a high-quality probiotic or incorporating probioticcontaining foods into the diet is a worthwhile endeavor. Any lifestyle-based program would be remiss not to include the importance of the mind-body connection. An interesting study done in 2012 tried to determine what factors could predict whether a person would respond to treatment. The researchers collected data on people with an established diagnosis of asthma and concluded people that demonstrated the ability to accept their condition, while maintaining a sense of control over their choices or an attitude of “change as challenge” or a “willingness to fight,” were more likely to respond to treatment. Those that approached their condition with uncertainty and anxiety were less likely to respond to treatment. This study highlights the importance of maintaining a positive attitude towards healing and believing in the efforts we make towards optimal health. ecotip Healthy Food at the Front Door A growing trend is the ringing of a doorbell heralding the arrival of healthy food. In addition to the convenience and time savings, having a grocery delivery van make roundtrips to and from multiple customers’ doorsteps generates far less emissions than traditional shopping. Home deliveries of local and organic fresh fruits and vegetables have customers clamoring for more. After serving most of the New York metro area for more than a decade, online grocer FreshDirect (FreshDirect.com) began delivering in the Philadelphia metro area in October 2012 and expanded to other parts of Pennsylvania, plus New Jersey and Delaware, last fall. “Our hyper-local, farm-to-fork food systems result in healthy relationships between consumers, food and farmers,” says David McInerney, co-founder of FreshDirect. The company also supports hunger organizations and provides nutritional counseling. Planet Organics (PlanetOrganics.com) serves the San Francisco Bay area. Beginning last fall, Instacart partnered with Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Costco to begin delivering food to homes in 13 neighborhoods in Chicago. Beginning in Colorado, where it’s based, Door to Door Organics (DoorToDoorOrganics.com) now provides its service in Michigan, plus metro areas of Kansas City, Chicago and New York. Green BEAN Delivery (GreenBeanDelivery.com), based in Indianapolis, now also delivers organic and sustainable foods in Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton, Ohio; Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky; and most recently, St. Louis, Missouri. Irv & Shelly’s Fresh Picks (FreshPicks.com) taps into 100-plus farmers within a day’s drive of its Niles, Illinois, center, to serve the Chicago and Milwaukee metro areas. “We’re able to concentrate on reaching people of all incomes and get deep into the communities,” says co-owner Shelly Herman. The eight-year-old company also partners with community groups, food pantries and schools. Going a step further, other companies are delivering prepared healthy meals. In one example, Power Supply (MyPowerSupply.com) recently partnered with Mindful Chef to foster this connection with 50 yoga and other fitness facilities, as well as other businesses in the Washington, D.C., metro area. natural awakenings
