IT IS WITH SINCERE THANKS that I express our appreciation to you, our team members, our valued customers, our suppliers, and our friends for the support you have given in helping us to achieve this golden jubilee – 50 years. It has been my pleasure to have led this company over the past five years, and particularly so considering the prevailing econonic climate in recent history, both locally and internationally. It has also been an honour to represent an institution that predates this country’s Independence, and which has grown with the community around it. The transition of Courts (Barbados) Ltd. to Unicomer (Barbados) Ltd. has redounded to the benefit of our corporate stakeholders not the least of which are our team members, customers, suppliers, and shareholders. An enviable and vibrant Corporate Social Responsibility Programme has supported the development of Barbadian institutions and infrastructure. It has also contributed to the development of team members as the company strives to be an employer of choice. The brand Courts has been synonymous with retail innovation over the past 50 years. The company quickly captured a dominant market share after incorporation with its heavy investment in marketing and communication that has brought the message of excitement, relevance, affordability and flexibility to each generation of retail patrons over the years. The attractive communication of flexible hire purchase terms and conditions was followed by other retail innovations such as the introduction of first world merchandising standards, an online store and the expansion into the optical industry. The company has also transitioned into revolving credit with the launch of its store card and the offer of cash loans to its loyal customers. Another accomplishment which has not been publicised is the recent launch of the Unicomer Corporate University, formerly the Unicomer Institute of Learning, which boasts of certified curriculum in various retail management constructs. Unicomer (Barbados) has not been immune to the ravages of trading in a weakened economic space and has had to re-engineer its retail footprint over the past decade. The closure of the Oistins and Cave Shepherd locations were indicative of the measures necessary to restructure the company’s capital base and to more appropriately position its productivity and

Over the past 50 years, Barbadian taste in furniture, appliances and electronics has changed and exposure through foreign cultural penetration especially in modern-day media has fuelled an appetite for leading-edge technology. Unicomer is committed to maintaining the balance between “first-to-market” technology and innovation and the support of local manufacturing, particularly the furniture sector. We will continue to do so while remaining true to the philosophy of market relevance at all times and customer demand. We are compelled to creatively capture the imagination and aspirations of our customers and to offer a superior experience when satisfying these aspirations. Fifty years later, the retail space in which the company trades knows no borders. When then Premier Errol Walton Barrow cut the ribbon to open our flagship Bridgetown store on November 21, 1965, the world of retail was limited to a ‘bricks-andmortar’ (B&M) existence. Trading across geographical borders on virtual stores with extensive distribution capabilities has given consumers unimaginable power of choice internationally, and has given rise to a new profile and generation of retailers in their own right. The concept of “showrooming” where customers use physical locations to view products which they ultimately purchase from online competitors has presented untold challenges in the international retail industry and has revolutionised the relationship between the retailer and consumer. In Barbados and the Caribbean, the phenomenon of online trading is growing steadily as consumers demand seamless integration between B&M, online and social media. With all the changes and developments over this half-century, the Courts brand remains a household name in its traditional segments and embraces the new generation of millennial consumers who will redefine the brand over the next 50 years. Once again, we accept the challenge, and take this opportunity to thank our loyal customers who not only helped to build our brand but our country. Cheers!

PETER ELLIS, Commercial Director PETER ELLIS is the first commercial director for Unicomer (Barbados) Limited, leading both the purchasing and marketing portfolios of the business since April 2013. He is a highly trained and experienced professional with experience in sales, marketing and purchasing management in the retail sector. Peter attended the Caribbean Union College in Trinidad, an offcampus of Andrews University (Michigan, United States), where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in business administration. He later completed an MBA at Cave Hill School of Business, University of the West Indies. Utilising his extensive background, Peter brings a truly diverse sensibility to his work. He leads the marketing and purchasing function and develops new business initiatives while strategising and implementing the company’s business development plans. Peter is passionate about serving others, personal development and enterprise success, so it is natural for him to pursue the goal of developing his team to increase their business knowledge and functional capacity. He acknowledges that there is never a dull moment on the job. The role requires a high level of responsiveness as every day presents new opportunities to become better, more efficient, and more effective. He sees Courts expanding its legacy of leadership in retail operations on the island, birthing new profit centres and expanding current ones through the growth of revenue streams. CHRISTOPHER LINTON, Director of Finance CHRISTOPHER LINTON is the newest member of the executive team, having joined the business in December 2014. As the head of finance, Christopher contributes to the development of strategic, operating plans and budgets, and the financial evaluation of business initiatives. He also influences business decision-making through the interpretation and analysis of financial information. Christopher directs financial control, probity and reporting. He ensures that risk is managed and appropriate controls exist within financial systems. The timeliness and accuracy of reporting key business information is critical to all functions within the organisation and is a major role in the finance team. Christopher also directs the internal audit support and information technology teams. He is a Chartered Accountant bringing over 17 years of experience to Unicomer. He possesses demonstrated skills in financial analysis, complex financial reporting, budgeting and business administration. He is a university graduate with a Bachelor’s in accounting and spent his formative years providing audit services at a major accounting firm. Christopher believes there will always be a need and desire for furnishings, appliances and electrical products to satisfy basic needs and lifestyle choices. “The challenges and opportunities for the company will rest with our ability to keep pace and stay ahead of those needs and desires while mastering the channels that deliver these products to customers.”

KYREL ROACH, Director of Human Resources KYREL ROACH brings decades of experience to the role of director of human resources and leverages her experience in seeing the company transition through many changes. The first such change occurred shortly after she joined the organisation in 1998, where the then personnel department was restructured and expanded

to meet the growing needs of the organisation. At the time Kyrel assumed the role of human resources manager. In 2007, she was promoted to the role of director of human resources and has used her experience and expertise to develop employee recruitment, training, performance management, career and

talent development. Kyrel is charged with keeping employee engagement at its peak and fostering positive attitudes amongst the team. This is achieved through strong employee relations, benefits, and rewards. She is a University of the West Indies graduate and holds a degree in public sector management and has

STEVE ALLEYNE, Director of Sales WHEN IT COMES to Courts, Steve Alleyne is a veteran in the business, contributing over 28 years of service. He moved up the ranks from sales representative to store manager, service manager, director of logistics and technical service, and has assumed the role of director of sales since April 2013. Steve completed studies in management at the University of the West Indies (UWI) and also holds certification in administrative corporate secretarial studies from UWI. He successfully completed management and business studies at the Harvard School of Business. Steve’s fondest memory is being awarded Manager of Operations in 2000 and Employee Of The Year in 2004, the latter earning him the coveted prize of a new Suzuki Ignis. Steve sees a more competitive market ahead thus making the ride into the future one of opportunistic challenges. Steve wishes to extend congratulations to the leadership of Courts over the years and expresses thanks to the current team and leader who have been steadfast in their pursuit of excellence at all levels in these difficult times. Personally, he is proud to have made many contributions and to have grown with the company. Steve is the father of Makayla and Ayden and is married to Sherry.

PATRICK ROACH, Director of Consumer Finance/Regional Credit Manager PATRICK ROACH joined Unicomer in 2008 as regional credit manager. In addition to this responsibility, he ably supports the Barbados team as director of consumer finance. Prior to joining Unicomer, Patrick served the financial services sector for over 25 years. In his current role, he leads the consumer finance team and manages the portfolio which includes hire purchase, cash loans and the store card products. Patrick holds a Bachelor’s degree in management studies and has also participated in several professional training programmes. One of his fondest memories as an employee of this prestigious organisation is the launch of the Courts store card and cash loans as he sees these important functions as the expansion of the retail service to providing additional financial services to its valued customers. Patrick is very technologically savvy so it is not surprising that he envisions a business moving forward in this rapidly evolving world of technology. He believes increased technology with an emphasis on the mobile platform will be introduced for sales transactions, underwriting applications, payments and customer enquiries in the future. Patrick is an avid automotive and motor sports enthusiast and enjoys photography.

COLIN R. CORBIN, Director, Logistics, Technical Services & Loss Prevention COLIN CORBIN has decades of experience in the fields of accounting and management. As director of logistics, technical services and loss prevention his responsibilities are vast and he seeks to provide strategic oversight and leadership with respect to the distribution system, after-sales service, and facilities and loss prevention systems of the company. Over the course of his career, Colin has been an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and a member of the Project Management Institute. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of the West Indies and completed his MBA at Heriot Watt University in Britain. Colin sees the that business is evolving as the market is becoming more demanding and complex. There is no doubt that such changes will have direct implications for the areas under his control especially in the area of technology. He has had the privilege of travelling and gaining knowledge from his regional and international colleagues, including the study and examination of more sophisticated warehousing and logistics structures. Colin is proud to be a part not only of a local team that is truly committed to serving its customers increasingly and in more ways in the future, but also to be a part of an international company which has the shared vision of excellence in all that it does. He is particularly thankful for the investment the company makes in its team members by assisting in both professional and personal growth and development. ONE CAN SELDOM mention finance and Courts without the names Glenroy Eastmond, Judith Layne, and Angela Wiltshire coming to mind. These seasoned finance experts have contributed decades of service to the business and have seen many transitions in their roles especially with the evolution of technology through the implementation of sophisticated accounting programmes like Oracle. Glenroy Eastmond first joined Courts in 1987 and has worked in the area of finance from the inception. Glenroy is a Chartered Professional Accountant (Canada) and manages the finance team, which he has led for over two decades. Glenroy’s contribution to Courts is merited in his ability to accurately present financial data for analysis and to assist in decision-making. He is a very hard-working individual and is highly respected in the organisation and known for his calm temperament Judith Layne, assistant accountant (payable), has served the business for 39 years. She started in the role of office clerk and held the post of cashier at a time where NCR machines were used and manually keying of account numbers and customer cards was the norm. Judith laughed as she reminisced

about what she referred to as the “dinosaur days”. Judith later held the post of head cashier, and after a period of study was promoted to the then accounts department. Judith is responsible for paying local creditors, staff members, statutory deductions, weekly suppliers, and monthly creditors to name a few. She has seen many physical changes in the business and has gained a wealth of experience since walking through the doors on December 1, 1976. She credits God for His guidance and direction through the years. Angela Wiltshire joined the company in January 1983 as office clerk. She is currently assistant accountant, (cash) and manages the fixed asset register and banking reconciliations. Angela recalled the days where there was one computer in the office area which was used for data entry, as many other tasks were done manually. No matter the name, the task of receiving, storing and the distribution of goods to customers rests in the heart of this team. Courts’ Distribution Centre boasts of hosting one of the most important human assets in the organisation, Oscar Moore. A stellar employee with an impeccable history of commitment, dedication and hard work, Oscar took time recently to pose for our cover photo, but reminded those present of his need to be released to return to his pending duties at the distribution centre. Such is the character of Oscar. So you may wonder why Oscar is so special. He is the only employee in the organisation who has served Courts for the 50 years of its existence.Still maintaining his youthful looks and energy, Oscar is a supervisor at the DC, and is pleased to have demonstrated his commitment to the organisation in this manner. We all salute you, Oscar, on your stellar performance.

UNICOMER BARBADOS (COURTS) LTD has always been committed to providing viable and innovative solutions for consumers in today’s complex and ever-changing marketplace. In recent times, electricity costs in Barbados have risen to some of the highest rates in the world. These high energy costs force consumers to use a significant percentage of their expenses in electricity consumption and reduce usage of electricity. To address this issue, the national consensus is that the residential sector should aim to conserve electricity and become more energy efficient. The overall aim is for the residential sector to conserve electricity and so reduce energy consumption. This can partly be achieved through the use of energy smart products which afford consumers energy and income savings, and through access to energy-efficient and energy renewable products at affordable monthly prices with Courts Ready Finance. Consumer products such as lighting, refrigeration, water heaters, and air conditioners compose more than 60 per cent of a home’s energy consumption. The key highlights of Smart Energy Solutions by Courts include a list of initiatives and new solutions including the following. • Photovoltaic (PV) system installation: Recently, Unicomer Barbados Ltd completed its installation of a 75 kWp PV system in its distribution center. The commitment to renewable energy will expand with the rollout into the Bridgetown store. Unicomer has become a member of the Barbados Renewable Energy Association (BREA) in order to commit itself to reducing its consumption of energy and carbon footprint. • Launching of LED lighting: In partnering with Caribbean LED, Courts now offers the best and most reliable LED bulbs manufactured locally for the customer segment. Courts is one of the first retailers to offer complete retrofits for homes with hire purchase financing making it affordable and cost neutral for customers to

The team is led by Anne Martelly, Samantha Harding and Brenda Taylor, all experienced in store management. Anne, the senior manager, has been in the business since November 1990 and has led the team since 2000. With major changes in renovations, the Courts Bridgetown store now includes an Ashley Furniture gallery, an interactive media centre where customers can explore the latest in technology from the world’s top brands such as Samsung and Apple. These additions to the ground floor, including the television blue wall displaying a full range of smart televisions and LED technology, create an ambience of energy that stimulates any customer passing through the store. Not to be left out is the Courts Optical store, where the latest in eyewear can be accessed at the most affordable prices on the island. If you have not been into the Courts main store lately, the large appliance department on the first floor now includes a fully functioning KitchenAid kitchen which often sees the likes of Barbados celebrity chefs, including Peter Edey and Craig Greenidge, creating sumptuous meals using the latest appliances and utensils from KitchenAid. It is also the hub for Smart Energy Solutions, where customers can easily identify the most energy-efficient appliances aimed at reducing power consumption. Over 90 per cent of the products displayed in the bedding department on the top floor are produced locally and met international standards in style and comfort. In addition, Unicomer Barbados (Courts) Ltd will provide consumers with Smart Energy Solutions labels on all energy-efficient products that will display average cost savings as per ENERGY STAR guidelines giving consumers more information and thus control over their energy consumption decisions. • Social responsibility: Unicomer is also committed to various endeavours in social responsibility by giving back to the local community and thus is looking at partnering to help sponsor and launch a programmes to promote energy efficiency and Conservation awareness in schools.

Credit team a beacon in the region IT’S ONE of the largest teams in the company and is challenged to motivate and encourage excellent customer credit ratings and generally good payment habits; it’s the credit team. The members of the Courts credit team are pleased to be recognised

across the regional group as the leading team in their area of expertise consistently delivering upon expectations and leading the Caribbean on regional benchmarks. They are the recipients of several regional awards and it is for this effort and the commitment to our

loyal customers that Courts’ credit portfolio remains in good standing. The team is supervised by Sherry-Ann Alleyne, who oversees the collections arm, while Rhonica Hinds functions as senior sanctioner, authorising new customer credit approvals.

The Unicomer University launched THE UNICOMER GROUP officially launched the Unicomer Corporate University with the objective of providing an enhancement to traditional internal training. This approach is designed to align the training arm of the company with the organisation’s vision and strategy. The opening of our corporate university has strengthened the focus on learning and challenged our team members to think about how learning can affect the organisation, improve their personal growth and enhance their interaction with each other as well as the customers we serve. The Unicomer Corporate University comprises three academies, a retail academy, providing training for all store personnel; a leadership and management academy, delivering training in leadership and management competencies; and a functional academy, providing training in core functional competencies across all functions. A number of programmes have already been developed. A major focus has been on the programmes listed under the retail academy. These development opportunities are available to all countries in the group and are accessible to team members.

Living a legacy SOME SAY there’s no need to dwell on the past; what matters is the future. When the history of an organisation does come up, it is usually in connection with some anniversary and in this case, it’s the 50th year of Courts’ trading in Barbados. A sophisticated understanding of the past is one of the most powerful tools we can have for shaping the future of the organisation. It was on November 21, 1965, that the then Premier of Barbados, the late Errol Walton Barrow, cut the ribbon to signal the official opening of Courts in Barbados. The brand already existed in the European market and in the neighbouring island of Jamaica some five years before. Courts through the years and Courts today demonstrate a commitment to creating quality products for its customers; Courts through the years and Courts today value its employees; Courts through the years and Courts today both believe in giving back to the community it serves. In addition to the story of the founders, the memories of team members and those of our customers, one thing remains certain, that the Courts brand has a special and unique meaning to us all. From the robust promotional campaigns, the unique communication strategies, the bright yellow buildings, the winner surprises and even the innovation to lead in its sector, Courts of yesteryear lives

Optical options open COURTS OFFICIALLY launched its Optical store in Bridgetown (pictured right) in December, 2013. Under the tag line of “Value You Can See”, this signified the launch by Courts of what was soon to be known as a leader in optical services and fashion eyewear products. The store carries a wide selection of eye wear including glasses, shades and contact lenses from top brands including Nike, Ray Ban, Jones New York and others. The second optical store was opened in Sheraton Mall in January 2014.

Courts hall of fame IN EVERY ORGANISATION there are always unsung heroes and so it is a great honour to take some time out to reflect on the outstanding contributions of a few people who have given selflessly of their time and expertise and are very much a part of this historic journey to our 50th year. Steve Marshall is the longest serving managing director of Courts, serving the organisation from 1982 to 2002 when he retired. Those who know Mr Marshall well would remember his passion for success and his constant interaction with the customers he served. Today, we wish to salute Mr Steve Marshall for his sterling contribution in leading Courts and for passing the baton to his successors. Maureen Greene and Sylvian Hall served Courts for over 30 years before retirement. Both women have mentored many of our current team members and have made many sacrifices to ensure that customers were satisfied and that office management was at its peak, Maureen and Sylvian, we salute you, and thank you for your contribution over the years. Last but by no means least, Oscar Moore, faithful to the 50th. Oscar treasures Courts and credits the company for giving him the opportunity to serve for his entire working career thus far. It is the commitment and dedication of these individuals, as well as countless others, that have paved the way for the Courts we know today, and it is our honour to publicly thank them for their contributions.

Spotlight – Cash Manager Dolores Nurse DOLORES NURSE has served Courts for 39 years starting as an office clerk and now holds the title of cash manager. As cash manager, she is responsible for all cashiers in collaboration with each store’s management team. Dolores, affectionately known in the past and to some newer colleagues as mama Dolores or mom, has been an inspiration to many junior team members offering guidance and encouragement in their roles throughout the years. Keeping ahead of the changes in technology over the years was enjoyable for Dolores as she fully supports change and development. She has moved from a system of paper management and filing to more complex software applications, including those developed specifically for the company’s financial management and customer transaction systems.
