Punctuation

- The comma

The comma is used in sentences to make the meaning clear. It tells when to make a short pause while we are reading. Here are three of the times when we use the comma: 1.

To separate three or more items in a list

For example: In the bag were some sugar, milk, jam and bread.

To separate the date and the year.

For example: Barbados became independent on 30th November, 1966.

3.

To separate the parish and country or state and country. For example: She lives in St. Philip, Barbados.

VERBS- Identifying verbs Every sentence needs a verb to make complete sense. Read the following group of words: Jane the flowers.

In this statement, we see a relationship between Jane and the flowers. She does something to them, she picks them. Rounding Numbers To The Nearest 100 Let’s look at rounding numbers to the nearest hundred (100). Example 1: There were 375 persons attending a concert. Round this number to the nearest hundred. The number 375 comes between the hundred numbers 300 and 400. Look at the number line. NATION WORKBOOK

Read the passage again. Have you ever been bitten by someone? I am sure that you will agree that a bite can be very painful. Scientists have made an instrument (a bite force transducer) to measure the power of a bite. The transducer measures the amount of pounds per square inch (psi) exerted when a bite is made. To help you understand, consider a human biting into a piece of steak. He will use between 150/200 psi. The most ferocious dogs have a bite force of about 600 psi. Lions and tigers generate about 1000psi. Their bite force is expectedly high since these carnivores use their powerful bites to rip prey apart. For many years the world thought that the most powerful bite force came from the Great White Shark. This belief was proven wrong, when bite tests were carried out using the force transducer. The shark exerted a bite force up to 1 000

psi. However, the crocodile’s bite force was at a stunning 5 000 psi. Scientists explain that sharks have razor sharp teeth and hence their bite force will not be as powerful as crocodile since they will be able to rip through flesh easily. Next time you visit the zoo, or see a crocodile, keep your distance. If your hand or foot gets in his mouth, it will be impossible to open his mouth to get it out. Remember his bite is almost ten times more powerful than the most ferocious pit bull. THE CONTINUOUS TENSES

When we want to show a continuing action, we use the continuous tense of the verb. This form is also referred to as the Progressive form.

This tense gives the idea that the action is occurring at a particular time. The action can a. start before another action. b. be in progress during another action. c. continue after another action or time. The continuous form of the verb is used when referring to an action happening over a period of time and which is incomplete in some way. The continuous or progressive form of the verb uses the present participle form of the verb, that is, the form of the verb which ends with -ing.

The Present Continuous Tense

The Past Continuous Tense

The past continuous tense is used to refer to an uninterrupted past action over a period of time. It is formed by using the past tense of the verb to be (was, were) and the present participle of the main verb. For example:
