MEASUREMENT – Measuring Lengths When we want to know how long, how tall, how short or how far away something or someone is we use linear measure. (Pronounce it as lin-e-ar) Know the correct unit to use when measuring the length of an item.

The kilometre, the metre, the centimetre and the millimetre are all used for measuring lengths. 1. The metre is the main unit for measuring length. It is used

to measure fairly short lengths like your table or your height.

A shorter way for writing the word metre is m.

2. The kilometre is used to measure long distances. The kilometre is used to measure the distance between places that are very far apart. For example, the distance from St. James to St. Philip.

The kilometre is written as km for short. NATION WORKBOOK

Read the following passage carefully:

Trap-Door Spiders

This spider is found on both the north and south coasts of the island of Jamaica. It seems to

prefer woodlands but also live in more open places.

This jet black spider has a robust body of 2.5 centimetres in length with fairly short legs. It is

seldom seen for it is a night creature and hardly leaves its burrow. It lurks inside near the top, ready to ambush passing insects. The Trap-Door spider gets its name from the lid it makes to cover its burrow. It digs the burrow straight into the ground, turning only to avoid large stones or tree roots. The spider may dig as

deep as 15 centimetres. It digs with fangs and carries the earth to the surface where it leaves it some distance from the entrance. The spider then smooths the walls of the burrow and makes them waterproof with a paste made of earth and

saliva. Then it lines them with silk. The burrow maybe as much as 2.5 centimetres wide but this varies with the age of the spider. Younger spiders dig narrower burrows which are not as deep. Now that you have read the above extract, carefully answer the questions which follow. 1.

Read the following passage carefully. It was Saturday, finally summer was officially here and I was excited

about the cricket match that afternoon with the guys. It always rained when

the West Indies cricket team played a match at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados but whatever happened I knew I would be out there supporting my team. After that summer, I would be a first former at The Grantley Adams Memorial School. Since I had got to my first choice school I would be accompanying my dad and my ‘guy’ cousins on their ‘guys-day out’ at the cricket match. For weeks the upcoming match had been discussed by Bajans in schools, shops, stores, street corners and van stands. Of all the games played in the Caribbean (basket ball, road tennis, table tennis, netball, football), cricket always generates the greatest interest. Finally, the time everyone was waiting for had arrived. As I stood outside waiting to leave, I saw people on their way to Kensington Oval. Vans and buses carried many people from the out parishes. We were finally there and it seemed once we got in, all the stands were packed with both West Indies and English supporters. People were waving banners, while others were talking excited with their friends. The brightly coloured outfits of the supporters gave the stands around the oval a psychedelic appearance.

The green on the field looked lovely in the sunshine. The umpires came out followed by the West Indies team and the two batsmen from the English team. Although the West Indies team lost this match to England that Saturday evening, the guys, along with everyone at the match still jumped up to support all the players and this day will be an amazing, fun-filled day that I will never forget. PRONOUNS

Look at these sentences. My brother and sister voted for the first time. They voted for the first time.

In the second sentence the word “they” replaces the words “my brother and sister”. A word used in place of a noun is called a pronoun. Read the following: Tanisha received two hundred dollars from her father. Tanisha went to town. Tanisha bought a pair of shoes and a blouse with the money. Tanisha told her mother what she had bought with the money. Would you write like this? Now read this: Tanisha received two hundred dollars from her father. She went to town and bought a pair of shoes and a blouse with the money. She told her mother what she had bought with it. The word she was used to replace Tanisha and the word it was used to replace money. In this way we do not have to use the nouns repeatedly. Each pronoun used above refers to or stands for a particular person or thing. When a pronoun replaces a particular person or thing or group, it is called a personal pronoun. The personal pronoun stands for a) b) or

c)

the person speaking or 1st Person (I, we, me, us),

the person spoken to or 2nd person ( you)

the person or thing spoken about or 3rd person (he, she, it, they, him, her, them).

Each personal pronoun agrees in person, gender, number, and case with the noun it replaces

When a personal pronoun is used as subject of a sentence, it is called a subject pronoun or nominative pronoun. When it is used as the object of a sentence it is called an object pronoun or objective pronoun.

DECIMALS (cont’d) -

Comparing Decimals

Decimals are compared in exactly the same way as other numbers, that is, by comparing the different place values from left to right.

The signs ( >

<

and = ) are also used when comparing decimals. It helps to write the two numbers into

the place value tables above each other and then compare the different place values in the two numbers, starting from the largest place.

Tip: It is easier to compare if the numbers have the same number of decimals places. You can tag a zero (or zeros) to the end of the number with fewer decimals. NATION WORKBOOK

Rounding Decimals Decimal place is the position of a digit to the right of the decimal point in a number which is written in decimal notation. Decimal place may be abbreviated as d.p.

A number can be rounded to a certain number of decimal places. If a number is rounded to 1 decimal place, it is rounded to tenths, since the tenth column is the first place after the decimal point. Similarly, if a number is rounded to 2 decimal places, it is rounded to hundredth since the hundredth column is the second place after the decimal point and if it is rounded to three decimal places, it is rounded to thousandth. The same rules for rounding apply: (i) Circle the number to which we are rounding (ii) Underline he digit immediately following that number (iii) If the underline digit is 5 or more, add 1 to the circled digit (iiv) If it is 4 or less, it stays as it is
