Read the following passage.
Comprehension
Does 400 gallons of water sound like a lot to you? That is how much water the average
family in some countries uses each day. That is enough water for about ten baths! There are many ways we can save water. Trying to save something or not wasting it is called conservation.
But why do we need to conserve our water? We do not have an ever-ending supply so we must use it wisely and not waste it. Less than one per cent of all the water on earth is drinkable. The rest of the water is either salt water or frozen solid in glaciers. So as the population of the earth grows, we have to be more careful about how much water we use. How can we save water? There are many simple things you can do. Just by turning the tap off while brushing your teeth,
you can save up to 200 gallons of water a month. You can save the same amount by fixing a leaking toilet. Or take a shower instead of a bath - that saves around 50 gallons of water. When washing a car, fill a bucket instead of using the hose. Using the hose can waste six gallons of water a minute if it is left running.
Since each of us depends on water for life, it is our responsibility to learn more about water conservation and how we can help keep our water pure and safe.

Comprehension Read the following passage carefully. The coconut palm grows mostly near the sea shore or other damp places. The stem is long and often curved. Coconut palms which grow near the shore seem to lean towards the sea as if to meet the force of the wind and enjoy the breeze. The leaves are all found at the top and they look like a bunch of large feathers. When they fall off they leave rings on the stem of the tree.
The nuts on the tree are covered with a hard, smooth rind which is green at first but
becomes brown as the nuts ripen. Inside the rind there is a thick layer which is white and tough when the nut is young but which becomes dry and fibrous when the nuts are ripened. Inside this fibrous covering is the true nut or seed of the tree. The fibrous covering is used for making mats or course twine. When the nuts are ripe they are broken open for the sake of the white meat, or kernel, which they contain. The water they contain is drunk. The meat is sometimes grated and used in bread or sugar-cake and the milk which can be squeezed from the grated meat is used in drinks or food. The kernel is sometimes dried and is called copra. From it we get oil for cooking or frying. It can also be used for making soap or candles and much is used for making margarine.

Comprehension Read the following passage carefully.
Like adults, children need exercise. Usually, after a long day at school many children may not want to participate
in physical activity. Today, we live in a “couch potato” era where both adults and children spend hours in front of the television and computer. This is especially true during the current pandemic as students are receiving instructions online while many adults are working from home. This inactive lifestyle is leading to an increasing number of obese (overweight) children and adults. Being overweight
increases the risk of heart diseases, diabetes and even premature death. Food gives your body fuel in the form of calories. A calorie is a unit of energy. Food contains calories which your body needs to function. However, if you eat more calories than your body needs, the extra calories are stored as fat. Exercise helps you to burn (get rid of) these extra calories and helps you to maintain your weight, so you would not be overweight. When adults think about exercise, they imagine working out in a gym. Children, however, exercise without even thinking of it. They exercise by just being active. Playing during recess, riding bikes, climbing trees or monkey bars in the park; exercise for children equals fun. Exercise has many benefits for children. They develop stronger muscles and bones, are less likely to be obese and their risk of developing diseases such as diabetes is reduced. Children who exercise regularly also sleep better. Exercise also helps children to be more alert and better able to focus on study. Parents should ensure that their children get at least one hour of exercise daily. They can do this by limiting the time their children spend on recreational television watching, video games and computer games. Parents can also set a good example by being active themselves. Exercising together can be fun for everyone.
