FORMING NOUNS A. Some nouns are formed by adding

-or, or -er to the end of a verb.

-er and –or are the most common ways of ending a word which names someone or something carrying out an action: For example:

sing + er = singer

act + or = actor

B. For those words ending in e, take off the e and add –er or -or. For example: mine + er = miner

C.

create + or = creator

If the word ends with a short vowel followed by a consonant, double the consonant and add –er or -or For example :

If there is a remainder when a number is divided by 2 or into 2, that number is an odd number. An easy way to tell if a number is an odd number or even number is to look at the digit in the ones column. In a whole number, if the digit in the ones column is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8, then it is an even number. But if the digit in the ones column is 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9, then the number is an odd number. GENDER: Common, Neuter Nouns are not only classified as masculine or feminine, but they are also categorized as common and neuter. Examine the sentence below: The teacher sits at the desk. This sentence contains two nouns, teacher and desk.

Is the teacher male or female? One cannot tell. The word teacher is therefore said to be of common gender because it can refer to either a male or a female. TYPES OF NUMBERS

Consecutive numbers: Consecutive numbers are those numbers which are arranged to follow each other at equal points Example: 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 are consecutive even numbers. COMPREHENSION

Read the following passage carefully. Obesity has been identified as a social problem in most of our public schools. Many prominent persons have agreed and steps have been taken, with little success, to reduce and further erase this unwanted guest from our society. Obesity results from an imbalance between energy intake, through food and drink, and energy expenditure in the form of irregular sustainable physical exercises. In other words, where energy intake exceeds energy expenditure over a sustained period of time, people (adults and children) will become overweight and obese. Some of the causes of obesity are: regular intake of foods with a high fat content; large consumption of sugary sodas or drinks; high usage of salty preserved snacks and other “junky” foods ; lack of sustained physical exercise. Pupils are now less mobile than before because technology has brought knowledge and other activities closer to the students. This has erased the need for them to travel to the libraries or on field trips to do research and collect data. Additionally, gaming activities can be had at one stop - the internet. Every verb must have a subject or doer of the action. Many verbs tell what the subject does. A word which tells what the subject does is called an action verb. Adjua washes the car. (an action verb) There are some verbs that express no action at all. Instead, they express a state of being; they connect the verb to additional information about the subject. A word that connects or links the subject of the sentence to information about that subject is called a linking verb. Stephen is a good long jumper. (linking verb)

The verb is connects the subject Stephen to the information about him. It is not an action which Stephen can do. A linking verb must be followed by a word that refers to the subject. That means that it must name or describe it. Many forms of the verb to be are used as linking verbs.

The last word in each verb above is the main verb while the other words help to complete the form and meaning of the main verb. A verb which helps to complete the form and meaning of the main verb is called a helping verb or an auxiliary verb. EXERCISE
