COMPREHENSION

Read this passage carefully. We cannot see the air around us because it is made up of invisible gases. People must have air to live or they will die. We breathe in a gas called oxygen. It fills our lungs and keeps us alive. When the air around us moves we call it wind or a breeze. Moving air pushes sail boats across the ocean, moves windmills, keeps our kites in the air and dries our clothes. When there is no wind, it means that the air is still. But when air is too strong it destroys things like houses, cars and it also uproots trees. This can happen when there is a strong wind called a gale. Sometimes the air is so strong we call it a storm or hurricane. Now write answers to these questions. Use complete sentences. 1. What do we call moving air? _______________________________________________________________________________________ 2. According to the passage how does air help us at home? ________________________________________________________________________________________ 3. What does the word “invisible” in line 1 mean? ________________________________________________________________________________________ 4. What happens when air becomes strong? ________________________________________________________________________________________ 5. What would happen if we had no air to breathe? ________________________________________________________________________________________ 6. Put these in order with the strongest first. ( i) what do I know (ii) what do I want to find out?

What do I know? - the height of one brother - some information about the second brother’s height (He is 12cm shorter) What do you need to find out? The brothers’ heights put together. Do you know the height of both brothers? No What must be done first? Find the height of the second brother.

George’s height = 125 cm Paul is shorter than George by 12cm Paul’s height

= George’s height - 12cm (Subtract because his height is less) = 125 cm – 12 cm

= 113 cm

COMPREHENSION

Read the following passage carefully. During a storm, lightning can be very dangerous. If you are outside when a thunderstorm begins, look for shelter in a building. If you are in the woods, look for a cave. If you are in an open field, lie down in a hole. If there is no hole, lie flat on the ground.

Standing in an open field, your body is like a lightning rod. Never look for shelter under a tree during a thunderstorm.

Lightning is more likely to strike you there! You and the tree are lightning rods standing together!

Water is also a good conductor of electricity. You must never go into the water when a storm is brewing. The air becomes charged and attracts lightning. The lightning has to go somewhere and it may go into the water. That is why lifeguards order everyone out of the pool even before a storm comes. If a thunderstorm comes up when you are boating, get to shore fast. Do not hold fishing rods or other metal objects. They attract lightning. A car is a good safe place to be in a thunderstorm. The rubber tyres “ground” the car’s metal body and remove its charge. This means that electricity cannot go through the car. Lightning does not strike cars.
